Year In Review

1. The Transylvania men’s soccer team earned its second consecutive HCAC Tournament Championship with a win at Hanover College on penalty kicks to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. 2. The Transylvania women’s basketball team produced its best season in program history with a 27-3 record. The Pioneers went 15-1 in HCAC regular season play on the way to winning the conference regular season and tournament titles before advancing all the way to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament. 3. The Transylvania men’s golf team won its 13th straight HCAC Conference Crown in qualifying for its 13th consecutive NCAA Championship berth. Transylvania University hosted the D-III Men’s Golf National Championships in May 2019 at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky. 4. The Transylvania women’s golf team won its second consecutive conference tournament championship in Fall 2018 behind HCAC Most Valuable Player Rachel Fine to clinch its second straight NCAA Tournament berth. The Pioneers tied their program best with a 15th-place finish at the National Championships 5. The Transylvania volleyball team, under first-year head coach Amy Barmore, won its first outright HCAC regular-season title with an 8-1 record. Junior Jordan Horne was named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year. 6. Senior Abby Blackburn of the Transylvania eventing team earned the USEA Intercollegiate Novice Champion title in becoming the top rider in the country at the Novice level, beating out all other university teams across Division I, II, and III college eventing. Blackburn was named the Pioneer Female Athlete of the Year at sesaon’s end. 7. Senior Graham Smith finished his career on a high note, becoming the first male All-American in Transylvania track and field history by finishing as the national runner-up in the men’s javelin at the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. 8. The Transylvania softball team qualified for its third straight NCAA Tournament, a program record by winning the 2019 HCAC Softball Tournament. 9. The Transylvania women’s lacrosse team won the HCLC regular season and tournament championship for the second-consecutive year to clinch their second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. 10. The Transylvania men’s lacrosse team won its fifth straight conference tournament championship to clinch its third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Transylvania’s athletic training staff strives to provide the highest quality healthcare to its student-athletes. The Certified Athletic Trainers are highly qualified and trained medical professionals with diverse educational backgrounds and experiences.

Transylvania has two athletic training rooms for its student-athletes. The main athletic training room is on the performance floor of the Beck Center with the secondary training room located in the field house at the Athletics Complex and both are open daily. Each training room is equipped with state-of-the-art injury prevention and rehabilitation equipment.

KYLE SUTTON ASST. ATHLETIC TRAINER

Kyle Sutton joined the Transylvania Athletics Sports Medicine Staff as Assistant Athletic Trainer in 2016. Sutton brings nine years of experience in athletic training to his role at Transylvania. Sutton has previously worked at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington as Head Athletic Trainer from 2015-16 and as Head Athletic Trainer at Westerville Central High School from 2008-15. Sutton received a Master of Science in Applied Exercise Science from Oklahoma State University in 2008 and a Bachelor of Science in Allied Medical Professions from The Ohio State University in 2006.

Transylvania partners with Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine Center to provide our student-athlete healthcare. Lexington Clinic orthopedic surgeons David Dome, Peter Hester, Ben Kibler and William Grantham serve as team doctors for the university and make weekly campus visits, eliminating the need to travel off-campus.

Nick Reuss begins his ninth year with the Transylvania sports medcine staff and his fourth as the Director of Sports Medicine for 2019-20.. Reuss joined the Transylvania sports medicine staff in 2011. He holds a Master of Science in recreation and sport sciences from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Ohio University. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and is certified by the Kinesio Taping Association as a Kinesio Taping Practitioner.

The sports medicine staff is fully accredited by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The staff specializes in the prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of injuries to our student-athletes. Athletic trainers have been recognized by the American Medical Association as allied healthcare professionals since 1990.

NICK REUSS DIRECTOR OF SPORTS MEDICINE

Christa Hendley joined the Transylvania Athletics Sports Medicine Staff as an Assistant Athletic Trainer in November 2017. Hendley carries over five years of experience in the athletic training realm to Transylvania. Prior to her time at Transy, Hendley served as the Head Athletic Trainer at the University of the Cumberlands from 2014 through 2017, overseeing men’s and women’s soccer, basketball, cheerleading, softball, track and field, and dance during her tenure at Cumberlands. Previous stints for Hendley include working at Lemak Sports Medicine and Orthopedics as a Head Athletic Trainer and at Chowan University.

also served as an assistant at Transylvania under his college coach and father Don Lane in 1990-91 while completing his Masters of Arts in Education at Eastern Kentucky University. Since becoming fully eligible for NCAA postseason play in 2004, Lane has compiled a 210-126 (.625) record overall and an impressive 138-75 (.647) record in HCAC play. Transylvania has won four regular season championships and three HCAC Tournament titles in the past ten years.

Lane has established Transylvania as one of the top NCAA programs in the country since arriving on campus. The Lexington native returned to his alma mater in 2001, following a 10-year stint as an assistant coach for multiple teams at the NCAA Division I level. Lane is the only coach in conference history to win HCAC Coach of the Year four times since taking over at Transylvania. He was also named the Midwest Region Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Glenn Robinson NCAA National Coach of the Year award in 2012. Lane has led the Pioneers to 20 or more wins five times and qualified for the NCAA National Tournament five times. In 2006, Lane led the Pioneers to their best postseason finish in school history as the Pioneers reached the NCAA Elite 8 round while posting a 27-5 record.

Lane became just the second coach in Transylvania men’s basketball program history to reach the 250win mark on January 4, 2017 in an 86-62 victory over Earlham. Lane reached the 200 career win mark on January 2, 2013 against Franklin College. Lane is the fastest coach to 200 wins in Transylvania history. Since his arrival, the Pioneers have twice produced the HCAC Player of the Year, 20 All-HCAC selections, one HCAC Freshman of the Year, two NABC All-Americans and 11 1,000-point club members. Lane’s Pioneers made a return trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2012-13, earning its second consecutive at-large bid after posting a 20-7 regular season record. Transylvania defeated four nationally ranked opponents, ascending to a national ranking of 16th in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll. At the conclusion of that season, Ethan Spurlin became the first Pioneer to be invited to participate in the NCAA Division III Reese’s All-star Game during the Final Four championship weekend in Virginia.

The youthful Pioneers won 18 of 27 games in 201011, finishing fourth in the HCAC race. Transy advanced to the semifinal round of the HCAC tourney.

The Pioneers were 16-11 in 2007-08, finishing second in the HCAC regular season race with a mark of 10-6, giving Transy its sixth straight season of a third place or better conference showing. Transy was 19-9 in 2006-07, finishing second in the regular season race and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championships. It was the second year in a row the tournament included Lane’s Pioneers. Overall, Transy has participated in 11 NCAA tournaments in the program’s history. In 2005-06, Transy tied a school record by winning 27 games, finishing 27-5 overall and 12-2 in HCAC play. That was good enough for a second successive HCAC regular season crown and when the Pioneers went on to win the HCAC tournament for the first time, the program had its first berth in the NCAA Division III national tournament since joining the NCAA ranks in 2001-02. Transy advanced all the way to the Elite Eight and

In 2003-04, Transy finished third in the HCAC with a 9-5 record. The Pioneers were 16-10 overall and qualified for the NAIA Independent’s Tournament, where they lost to top-ranked Mountain State in the school’s final NAIA post-season appearance. In 2002-03, Transy rebounded from its first losing season in 21 years to post a 13-11 mark, including a 6-8 mark conference play, finishing fifth. Lane played at Transy from 1986-90, scoring 1,286 points. During his four years, he received numerous awards, including Pioneer Athlete of the Year in 1990. He was a three-year starter at guard, a co-captain, and an NAIA Scholar-Athlete.

In 2008-09, Transy posted a record of 21-6, winning 20 or more games in a season for the third time during Lane’s tenure. The Pioneers won their third HCAC championships with a mark of 13-3, their second-best conference record under Lane. Transy advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the third time in his eight seasons, earning Lane his third HCAC Coach of the Year selection.

In 2004-05, Transy tied Hanover for its first HCAC regular season championship with an 11-3 record and 20-6 overall. During the season, Transy was nationally ranked for the first time since becoming an active member of the NCAA’s Division III. That performance earned Lane his first All-HCAC Coach of the Year honor.

Transylvania posted an 85-33 record during Brian Lane’s four years as a player, including a 26-4 mark during his sophomore year that included an appearance in the NAIA national tournament when the Pioneers advanced to the Sweet 16. Lane graduated from Transylvania with a degree in business management and teaching physical education in 1990 and received his master’s degree in education from Eastern Kentucky in 1991. After coaching at Transy for one year, he moved to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he was an assistant for a 23-9 team that won a Metro Conference championship and played in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. 11

Mike Stone

Assistant Coach

Mike Stone joins the Transylvania men’s basketball staff for his first season as assistant coach with the team for the 2019-2020 season. A former standout for the Pioneers from 2008 through 2012, Stone returns to Broadway and 4th in a coaching capacity after a multifaceted professional playing career and a coaching resume which has evolved in the Bluegrass following his playing days.

Stone comes to the Pioneers from Lexington Catholic High School where he has served as an assistant coach over the past six seasons. “I am thrilled that Mike is returning to Transylvania as our full time assistant basketball coach,” says coach Lane of Stone’s homecoming. “He was one of the hardest workers in the history of our program when he was a Transylvania student-athlete and that has carried over into his coaching career. The training and personal instruction that he has done with high school, college and professional basketball players will be a huge asset to our players individual improvement and development. Mike’s professional playing experience both in the United States and overseas will be a huge plus for us. “I am looking forward to joining Coach Lane’s staff at one of the premier small college programs in the country,” Stone adds. “I believe this year’s team has the talent to compete at a high level and am excited to get to work and help carry on the tradition of Transylvania men’s basketball.” As an assistant with Lexington Catholic, Stone specialized in player development for the school’s middle school and high school teams. While Stone was with the storied program under Brandon Salsman, Lexington Catholic captured the 11th Region championship in 2014-2015. Stone also independently runs the Stone Basketball Training where he specializes as a basketball skills trainer, working with players at all levels spanning elite high school, collegiate, and overseas professional basketball players. The Transylvania Class of 2012 graduate draws upon his time as an overseas professional basketball player and his collegiate playing experience at Transy in forming his coaching laurels. Prior to beginning his coaching career, Stone played for the Bowling Green Hornets of the Central Basketball Association in 2013-2014. The following year, Stone played abroad with the Suncoast Clippers of the Queensland Basketball League in Australia. Stone’s professional experiences followed a winning career at Transylvania where he played under Lane, leading the Pioneers to two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2009 and 2012 and two Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season titles. Stone served as a team co-captain as a senior at Transylvania and won the Lee Rose team award in 2011. The Lexington native graduated from Transylvania with a double major in Economics and Business Administration. 12

“I am beyond blessed to have this opportunity to be a part of the men’s basketball program at Transylvania University,” says Hamilton. “I am so grateful to head coach Brian Lane for giving me this opportunity. I am looking forward to joining this winning culture and to help this program improve every day.”

Prior to his time at Midway, Hamilton served as an assistant coach at Division III Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport, Louisiana for the 2017-2018 season under his former collegiate coach, Chris Dorsey. Along with Dorsey, Hamilton helped the Gents finish as the regular season runner-up in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and a runner-up in the SCAC Tournament. With Hamilton on the staff, Centenary led the conference in scoring defense and second in the conference in both field goal and three-point field goal defense. While at Centenary, Hamilton spearheaded the process of creating and managing an online national recruiting database for the men’s basketball program. Hamilton began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Central Community College in Columbus Nebraska, where he helped guide the Raiders to an 18-14 record in 2016-17. In addition to his collegiate coaching stints, Hamilton has been involved with a number of other leadership and coaching endeavors intersecting with the game of basketball. From 2015 through 2017, Hamilton was a Director of Operations Intern and Youth Mentor with The Young Vets, mentoring student-athletes and directing player development. Over the past two years, Hamilton has also worked as a basketball camp counselor at the University of Kentucky and Valparaiso University. As a student-athlete, Hamilton competed at Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, Vermont from 2014 through 2016. At Lyndon State, Hamilton played under Dorsey, whom he would later join with again for his coaching duties at Centenary. Hamilton graduated from Lyndon State in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. 13

At Midway, Hamilton assisted in all facets of the men’s basketball program; two players under Hamilton’s guidance earned All-Conference honors. In Hamilton’s tenure at Midway, the Eagles saw a 10-game improvement from two years prior.

A former Division III basketball player with an array of coaching experience, Hamilton comes to the Pioneers most recently from Midway University in Midway, Kentucky, where he spent the 2018-19 season as an assistant coach for their men’s basketball program.
