FROM THE

OF YOUR PRESIDENT

Anthony J. Delmonte, Jr.

A couple of quick announcements:

I would like to congratulate our golf professional Jonathan Decker for being named merchandiser of the Year by the PGA of WNY. This honor was voted on by his peers. This is a reflection of the work he, and his team, put into the pro-shop this year.

At the board meeting in September, we elected our new officers for the 2022/2023 operating year. They are as follows: President, Marco Benedetti, First Vice President, Geoff Burker, Second Vice President, Jim Pohlman, Treasurer, Maggie Shotwell, and Secretary David Hawker. Please join me in congratulating our fellow members on their new role.

I would also like to thank all of the candidates that ran for the Board of Governors in this year’s election. It was another year where we had an excellent slate of candidates. We appreciate the support for those that accepted nomination. It will forever be imperative that we have good, qualified candidates for both Board of Governors and committee positions, so we thank those that showed fortitude in running.

The elected slate to this year’s Board of Governors are Omar Abdallah, Keith Belote, and Chris Finley. These governors will be sworn in at the Board of Governors integration dinner on October 27 and begin their threeyear term November 1st . We look forward to another exciting year at Transit Valley. I would also like to extend congratulations to the newly appointed Women’s Committee members – Jill Belote, Carolyn Nerber, and Beth Vullo who will be also serving three-year terms.

In thinking about this month’s message, it became clear that the theme should be one of appreciation. This past year our club grew in many ways. Membership grew by 4%, attendance at our events was as robust as ever and our new members became TVCC family with rapidity. To just say I am grateful would undervalue the amount of work our staff put in this year. So, this message is dedicated to them.

Throughout the year, our golf course was in the best condition in quite some time. Adam, and his team, took our course to the next level, and I am excited for what is to come. The clubhouse staff performed admirably this year, at times under very difficult staffing circumstances. There were several nights when EVERYONE on the staff was washing dishes and doing laundry. Brandon, Joe, De’Ann and Chef Dan; thank you for your leadership through these times to ensure our membership has the best experience.

Of course, none of the aforementioned is possible without overall leadership. Tina performed masterfully over the past three years. I cannot imagine what the past three years would have been like without her. She lives, breathes, and sleeps our club. Tina is an important part of our family.

I want to thank you, the membership, for your support throughout the year. You made my experience as President gratifying. I appreciate all your feedback and insights on how we can continue to improve. Feedback is a gift because it comes from a good place where you want what is best for our club. We are lucky to have members that care enough about our club to share their thoughts with us for the betterment of our membership experience.

I would like to thank my fellow board members; Jonathan Sinatra, Maggie Shotwell, Jim Pohlman, Dave Hawker, Geoff Burker, Derek Zgoda, Ravi Sinha, and Marco Benedetti. I appreciate your passion and vigorous representation for doing what is best for our membership. Thank you for constantly challenging the status quo and demanding the best of all of us. It has been a sincere honor to serve with you.

Finally thank you to my family. Sheila, I appreciate your patience with me; between work and Presidential duties I was away more than expected. To Abbi and Dom, I missed more than a few dinners at home and time is fleeting so I look forward to a more regular schedule.

Tina Gutekunst

Well... this is it! This will be my final message as General Manager and as you can imagine, my emotions are running pretty high. Thinking back over the past three years, I have a lot to be grateful for and there are times that I truly can’t believe what an amazing experience it has been. Yes, there have been challenges, but a positive mindset brings positive things.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our entire staff for all your support, hard work, dedication, and willingness to provide excellent service to our members. And please remember, “let your unique awesomeness and positive energy inspire confidence in others! Special thanks to Brandon, Chef, Adam, De’Ann, Nancy, Joe Lee, Jonathan, Krista, Hiram, Joe Wilkie, Matt, Angela, Lee and Bruce for always having my back and putting up with my earlier morning emails and texts! I am very proud of all of you, and it has been a pleasure to work alongside you, each and every day!

I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to all the board members and women’s committee who gave unconditional support during the past three years. Most of all thanks for believing in me.

I would be remise if I did not mention some very special people – Tony and Sheila Delmonte, Pat Clabeaux, Maggie Shotwell, Ned Gian Jr, Eric Balsom, Craig McIntyre, John Militello (who talked me of the ledge a number of times during the construction project), Cheryl Carr, Marianne Glover, Jim Bokor (for keeping my husband busy) and finally, Jonathan Sinatra. Mr. Sinatra you helped me through some very difficult times, you were the first person I called when my dad passed away, and I cannot thank you enough for being there for me, all I can say is “it’s been a great ride.”!

Thank you to all the members for your patience, understanding and loyalty, you will always have a special place in my heart. And finally, to all the kids, thanks for always making me smile and for the sunshine you bring into my life! Looking forward to the next journey and I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with Chris Myslow our new GM/COO!

It has been a wonderful year!

A Message from the Women’s Committee

Patricia Clabeaux President

It is hard to believe that my three-year term on the Women’s Committee and president this past year has come to an end. I can say without hesitation that it has been a very rewarding experience. I feel much more connected to the club and have met friends that I most likely would not have met if I were not on the Women’s Committee. I would like to thank Andrea Rubino and Cindy Fohrd who have also fulfilled their three-year term; and, Fran Palermo, Karen Dobos, Julie Swiatkowski, Kelly Longo, Annette Mills who will continue on the committee. A very special thank you to Paula Orlowski who has been a tremendous support to me this past year, and who will be taking over as president. I would also like to welcome Jill Belote, Carolyn Nerber, and Beth Vullo as new members of the committee. What a great group of women. I look forward to all the exciting things planned for next year. Finally, I would encourage all ladies of the club to consider serving on the women’s committee. I promise you will find it as rewarding as I did.

On behalf of the Women’s Committee, I would like to welcome Chris Myslow as our new General Manager. After an extensive search, I am very confident that his member-centric philosophy will be a great fit to TVCC.

In closing my final message, I would like to thank the staff, ladies, and members of TVCC for allowing me the privilege of being the Women’s Committee president this past year. It truly has been an honor.

A Message from The Golf

Professional

Jonathan Decker, PGA Head Golf Professional

October is here and there is so much to be excited for, even for the golfers in Buffalo. Aerification is healing nicely, with the course ready to be in prime shape by October 1st or sooner. While the bulk of the competitive season is complete, we have the Men’s Snowbird as well as The Last Gasp taking place this month. If you are interested in participating, please register on ForeTees today. Our activity level at the club continues to be strong, with event participation reflecting the increased interest in the game throughout the entire 2022 season. As the year starts to wind down, the Golf Committee and I will be reviewing golfrelated club policies, preparing the 2023 event calendar, and discussing ways to further enhance the golf experience for those at Transit Valley.

mercHaNdiser OF tHe year

On Sunday, October 9th I will be honored as the Western New York PGA’s Merchandiser of the Year for Private Facilities. This is truly a team honor, and I would like to thank my entire staff as well as the supportive members at the club who frequent the golf shop. We have recently received several reports of golf balls landing in the backyards of homes behind the driving range, with one incident putting small children in danger. While the taller nets that were installed in August have helped reduce the number of golf balls leaving the range, there are still players with the ability to hit over the barrier and put our neighbors at risk.

We ask that all members and guests be mindful of the distance they can hit their shots and abide by all posted signage on the range. Members are encouraged to politely remind those that may not be following this rule or seek the assistant of the Golf Shop. Offending individuals may have their use of the range and practice facilities revoked.

If the issue continues, we may be forced to restrict range use to irons only or switch to a limited flight golf ball. Neither option is preferred, so please be considerate of the situation.

GHiN

The last day to post scores for rounds played in Western New York is Monday, October 31st . Please continue to post scores played in areas that are “in-season” such as Florida, the Carolinas, or any place where golf is played year-round. If you have not yet done so, please consider downloading the free GHIN App. This allows you to post hole-by-hole scores for rounds played at almost any golf course in the country as well as abroad. The app also features stat tracking as well as a GPS component for an additional fee.

A Message from the Greens Superintendent Adam Mis

The secret is out, Transit Valley is back! We have heard all season from everyone who has played all the courses in Western NY, that Transit Valley was the best conditioned course. It is extremely exciting that in twenty months we have made huge strides in making Transit Valley the best option in Western NY for club membership. It wasn’t easy, and we have a long way to go in my assessment, but I can’t thank the leadership team at the club and my staff enough for getting us back up to one of the best clubs in Western NY. We will continue to keep making substantial upgrades to the property in a positive direction for years to come.

We are currently working on the forward tees. Transit Valley, according to the data from Trackman, is one of the longest courses in Western NY from the forward tees. The architect realized that after his first visit and has put together his master plan to address this by making the forward tees more challenging for those with lower handicaps while also making the course shorter distance for the higher handicappers. I believe once the tees are in play, you will see how they will make the course more appealing and enjoyable to all player levels.

One item from our survey results was the fence around the property. It was an eye sore, but also people didn’t want to have it removed because of security issues. So, we came to a compromise to address both issues and we will begin to plant the fence in October. This way, over time, the plant material will hide the hideousness fence with vegetation during the summer months while still providing the security deterrent of people coming onto the course.

The irrigation parts are starting to arrive for the spring installation. Upon arrival, we will be staging pipe in two locations. The 2” coils will be located at the grounds department. The 50 ft lengths of larger mainline pipe will be placed in the triangle between holes #9 and #18. This will provide a large enough area to not only stage all the pipe, but also provide a large enough area to fuse the pipe and access the entire property. We still don’t have an exact arrival time, but it should be before the end of the year. We have had a big loss to our staff with my Assistant Renee leaving to become an Erie County Sheriff. We wish her the absolute best and she will be tough to replace. We hope to fill this position soon with a viable candidate.

Soon the leaves will start falling and our fall maintenance will begin. It’s a wonderful time of the year so get out and enjoy the course!

Country Club appropriate denim is defined as properly sized, in excellent condition, and dark in color(white or black denim is also acceptable). Country Club appropriate denim does not include holes or rips, fading or stonewash look, frayed material, denim shorts, jackets, skirts, dresses, work type denim shirts, or jeans that are worn extremely low cut. Tasteful and appropriate shirts and shoes must be worn. For men, denim must be paired with any tucked-in and collared shirt, sport coat or sweater.

Country Club Attire is also deemed appropriate which is defined as: Bermuda length shorts, sundresses, collared shirts for men and appropriate women’s attire.

1921 Room (Previously the Formal Dining Room) & Ballroom

Country Club Attire will be acceptable consisting of collared shirts for men and appropriate women’s attire. Sport coats are optional but encouraged. The intent is to not allow denim. However, denim will be permissible if the Grill Room has reached its maximum capacity.

Club/Special Events

Dress codes will be defined for all Club/Special Events and will be communicated in the newsletter

Members are encouraged to consider common sense when making casual-attire decisions. We prefer our members dress-up rather than dress-down when visiting the Club. While we expect that members will use good taste and judgment, the Board has directed Club Management to discreetly review any inappropriate casual attire decisions directly with the member to ensure that the Club maintains a casual environment that is enjoyable for everyone.

Unacceptable Clubhouse Attire: Yoga pants, leggings,t-shirts, shorts, and athletic attire
