THE ALTERNATIVE ACADEMY

Are you……… • Aged between 15 and 18? • Interested in climbing, skateboarding, BMXing or other sports? • Want to improve your employability and life skills? • Want to gain some qualifications? • Interested in being part of something unique and fun? Then Transition Extreme’s Alternative Academy programme might be for you!


What is the Alternative Academy programme? This is a 12 week sport-based voluntary training programme in which you will increase your confidence, motivation and life skills. During the programme you will gain skills in one of the sports we offer here at Transition Extreme (climbing, skateboarding, BMX). You will also be given the opportunity to develop your personal and employability skills, meet new people and tackle new and exciting challenges. You will be able to gain qualifications such as a Youth Achievement Award and the John Muir Award, which are well respected by potential employers.

Who is the Alternative Academy programme for? The Alternative Academy is a voluntary programme for young people who may not want to pursue traditional education, such as school or college. It is for young people who want to improve their skills and gain qualifications in a unique and exciting environment so as to move on to further training or employment. The programme is open to anyone aged between 15 and 18. If you have an interest in sport and want to gain qualifications and experiences to help you move on to the next step in your life then this programme might be for you!


What will I be doing? There are 4 modules that make up the programme: In Sport 1 you will choose one of the sports we offer here at Transition Extreme, and be given training in all the different aspects of that sport. In Sport 2 you will try out different sports at various venues throughout the city. This is designed to encourage you to try new things, but also for you to explore the impact that sport has on different communities. In the My Future module you will be given the chance to develop your life and employability skills, as well as learn about various health and wellbeing topics. You will learn about CVs, interviews, and job applications. In the Make It Happen module you will be given the opportunity to organise your own events. This could be anything from a climbing or skateboard competition to a live gig. You will also be given the chance to help organise your own graduation ceremony!

You will have access to a range of qualifications that you can gain during the programme, including a Youth Achievement Award, a John Muir Award, a First Aid Certificate, a Sports Leader Award, and a NICAS climbing certificate amongst others.

When does it start? The Alternative Academy programme starts on Monday 2nd September 2013, running 5 days per week (Mon-Fri), 10am to 3pm, for 12 weeks, with a 2 week break for the October holidays.


How do I apply? Before applying, you might like to come along to our taster day, from 10am to 3pm on Thursday 29th August at Transition Extreme. At the taster day you can come along and find out more information about the Alternative Academy programme. You can chat to staff members, hear from current participants, and find out more about the activities you will can take part in throughout the programme. You will also have the chance to try out the sports, and ask as many questions as you want. You need to complete an application form for the programme which should have come with this prospectus. If you are successful in your application you will then be invited to attend an interview. The deadline for applications is 5pm on Thursday 29th August.

Places on the taster day are limited so get in touch as soon as possible!

Interviews will be held on Tuesday 3rd September at Transition Extreme and we will contact successful applicants on Wednesday 4th September by telephone.
