From receiving the Lord so long ago Where he answered that call and beck To the Rosary clenched in his dying hand Brown scapular round his neck His eye lids lifting one last time To see Dominic by his side And taking the hand of his Mother pure Crosses o’er to paradise Ten thousand sermons left his tongue, A million sins he heard, Abide with me sings heavenly host, In choirs of song conferred Each Mass celebrated and evening prayer Glowing now before his face The Holy Souls he remembered are Now Seeking his embrace. Thaddeus Moriarty behold at once, He too is standing there Amazing grace how sweet the sound Some Ninety years of prayer. Tralee be still for sombre march As Placid takes his leave The crowds they strain to hear once more The faith he bade us believe Oh Marbled altar silent now without his blessed voice The Saints, The Prayers, The meaning of, the counsel of the wise. The truth he spoke would feed our souls In gentle tones but stern The light above his confessional door No longer brightly burns In remembering him As he taught on sin I oft felt stirred inside, He fought the good fight And stayed the true course For which Jesus lived and died. I forgot the passcode for my iPhone! How can I remove it? Billy says: If you enter the wrong passcode in your iPhone more than six times it will be disabled. The only way to get it up and running is to erase the phone. So, I always recommend you back it to the iCloud and always have Find my iPhone enabled.

Method 1 From another device, go to icloud.com/find. If prompted, sign in with your Apple ID .Click All Devices at the top of your browser window. Select the device you want to erase. Click Erase [device] to erase your device and its passcode .Now you can either restore from a backup or set up as new Method 2 Connect your iOS device to your computer and open iTunes. While your device is connected, force restart it On an iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad, or iPod touch: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. Don't release when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding both buttons until you see the recovery mode screen. On an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Volume Down buttons at the same time. Don't release when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding both buttons until you see the recovery mode screen.

Whats the best 'Free to Air " (FTA) receiver to watch the TV Channels on

Billy says: There are two different types of free to air receivers on is a standard Free to Air which will give all the FTA Channels but it will not update automatically and there is no 7 Day guide. The other choice is called a freesat box which is more expensive but it has a 7day guide and updates automatically and if a new channel comes on out you will get it. You can also record with it using a usb stick or external hard drive. It has only a single tuner so you can only record one program at a time

CAHILL CALLS ON MINISTER TO HONOR ST.MARY OF THE ANGELS AGREEMENT

Councillor Michael Cahill has again called on Minister Finian McGrath to honor the agreement and wonderful gesture of the Doyle family, Beaufort who gave their lands free of charge for the care of children with a disability, by reopening St. Mary of the Angels, Beaufort to new admissions.” Councillor Cahill who has worked closely with the Parents and Relatives Association, made the call again this week ahead of the Minister’s visit on Wednesday. The Fianna Fail Councillor said “it would be an absolute scandal if there was to be any change of use to this amazing facility in Beaufort.” “ I will be requesting the Minister to reopen St. Mary of the Angels, to new admissions.” “That was always the intended use and more importantly that is what the Doyle family wanted” stated the Local Councillor. “Notice of Motion” “That Kerry County Council call on St.John of God’s, the Minister with responsibility for People with a Disability, Finian McGrath TD and the Government, to honor the wonderful gesture of the Doyle family, Beaufort who gave their lands free of charge for the care of children with a disability,by reopening St. Mary of the Angels, Beaufort to new admissions.”

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... MINISTER MCGRATH OPENS NEW PREMISES OF THE KERRY BRANCH OF DOWN SYNDROME IRELAND IN TRALEE The Minister of State with special responsibility for Disabilities, Finian McGrath TD, this week officially opened the new premises of the Kerry Branch of Down Syndrome Ireland in Tralee. The Minister said, “Through dedication of its committee, the Kerry Branch of Down Syndrome Ireland is a vibrant organisation which provides support to over 260 members and their families throughout Kerry, providing vital services such as speech and language therapy and occupational therapy to all service users in various locations throughout the county”. The new premises will enable Down Syndrome Ireland to provide group courses, meetings, parent and toddler groups and youth groups and will become the hub for administration throughout the whole of Kerry. The Minister said that “associations such as Down Syndrome Ireland work tirelessly to support people with a disability to realise their full potential, enabling them to fulfil their hopes and ambitions”. The Minister said that the Government will continue to improve services and increase supports for people with disabilities and pointed out that “innovative community projects such as the one in Tralee allow people with a disability to live independent lives, exercise greater independence in accessing the services they choose, and enhance their ability to meet their needs and plan their lives”. “The great work put in by the Kerry Branch of Down Syndrome Ireland in opening their new premises,”the Minister said, “is an example of our shared vision that people with disabilities are supported in maximising their potential, and that barriers to their access to services, education, employment or healthcare are removed.”

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: THE HOUSING ASSISTANCE PAYMENT Question: How does the Housing Assistance Payment work? Answer: The Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) is a form of social housing support for people with a long-term housing need. It is administered by local authorities and will eventually replace long-term Rent Supplement. You must be on the local authority’s housing list (which means that you qualify for social housing support) to be eligible for HAP. HAP is being introduced in phases. From March 2017 the final phase will bring it fully into operation in the last three local authority areas – all in Dublin. Under the HAP scheme, you find your own private rented accommodation. Although the local authority administers HAP, you will not be a local authority tenant. The rental agreement will be between yourself and the landlord. This means that you will have certain rights and obligations, as will your landlord. The rent must be within the HAP rent limits, which are based on your household size and the rental market in your area. Additional flexibility is provided where a household cannot find suitable accommodation within the HAP rent limits. The Homeless HAP Pilot in Dublin offers further flexibility for homeless people. The local authority will pay your landlord directly and you will pay a differential rent to the local authority. This means that the amount of rent is based on your income and your ability to pay. If you are getting a social welfare payment at a post office, you must pay the local authority through the Household Budget Scheme. If you take up a job or increase your working hours, you will still be eligible for HAP, provided that you meet the other conditions of the scheme. People who are on the housing list and currently getting Rent Supplement will be transferred to HAP on a phased basis. If you are on the housing list, living in a HAP area and getting Rent Supplement, you can now apply for HAP. Detailed booklets and other information about HAP are available on housing.gov.ie.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... COUPLES ..FALL BACK IN LOVE FOR VALENTINES WITH THE SNORING COACH! Snoringcoach.com are launching their online stop snoring program next Monday the 16th of January 2017. This is an online program by Eoin Burns, of breathingcoach. ie based in Tralee. It will run for 28 days so you can resolve your snoring

problem by Valentine’s Day. Many people just put up in despair at sleeping in a spareroom, being in the doghouse the whole time or sleeping on the couch. “its hugely disruptive on normal relationships as people get tired and irritated with being kept awake at night - little wonder that sleep deprivation is a form of torture!” said Eoin. Most people find the program relatively easy to implement, its about noticing your breathing during the day, some posture changes and tips around what to do directly

before bed. You can’t control your breathing at night so you need to breathe more quietly by day so you quieten at night. I find that while some people luckily stop snoring overnight, most people reduced their snoring noise by 70% in 14 days. That’s usually enough of a reduction to be tolerable to other people. When you work more on it then you stop permanently - then you might be complaining about their snoring! The trick is to make it your new habit so the 4 week program should have you well on the way to a new habit.

There is a discount code of €30 available until the 16th of January “newyearnewyou”(new year new you) and you can sign up at snoringcoach.com/workwith-me.

COBH RAMBLERS SIGN FORMER TRALEE DYNAMOS PLAYER SHANE LOWTH FROM FIRST DIVISION CHAMPIONS LIMERICK FC Shane Lowth joined Limerick in 2014 as part of the club’s under 19 squad before graduating to the first team squad. Lowth made a couple of appearances as Limerick were crowned First Division champions in 2016. Lowth, who can play at right-back or on the right side of midfield has also played for his hometown club Tralee Dynamos and is the son of Paul Lowth who runs the popular sports bar , The Huddle , in Strand road , Tralee. Stephen Henderson brought Lowth in to train with the Rams in late 2016 and was impressed with what he saw.“Shane is an exciting young player with a huge amount of promise. He brings a lot of options and versatility into our squad. I watched him a lot when he trained with us and he improved as each session progressed. He has pace and aggression going forward, something that I like to see in a player. Shane is another great addition to the squad.”

The arrival of Lowth brings Stephen Henderson’s squad to 18 players heading into 2017.

HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A FANTASTIC WEEK

It’s no secret I love makeup. I love full glam, lashes, highlight that you can see from space and eyeshadow blended to perfection. But between working as a Makeup Artist on a beauty counter and the Christmas festivities I literally wore makeup for a month straight. Every. Single. Day.

I always cleanse my skin twice a day and make sure my skin is completely clean going to bed but I still felt my skin needed a break. So as this week is my week off, I haven’t put a scrap of makeup on and my skin feels amazing. So this week I’m going to share my top tips on My Makeup Detox. 1. STILL CLEANSE - Even when you’re not wearing

makeup, you still need to cleanse tone and moisturise your skin every morning and night. There is dirt everywhere and that dirt will build up on your skin if you don’t clean it. 2. WATER WATER WATER - Staying hydrated is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your skin. You could use the most expensive products in the world but if you’re not drinking enough water your skin will look dull and dehydrated. 3. FACEMASK IT UP There’s no better feeling than my skin after a facemask. Although I would like to say I do

one once a week, I don’t. So this week I’m making a conscious effort to do at least two face masks. When choosing a facemask, make sure to choose one that will suit your skin type. If you have dry skin, choose a hydrating mask such as the Glam Glow Thirstymud. If you have acne prone skin, choose a clarifying mask such as the Origins Clear Improvement Mask. If you want luminous skin choose the Lancôme Advanced Genifique mask. My tried and trusted facemask brands include, GlamGlow, Lancôme, Clarins, Trilogy and Origins, yes there are no “drugstore” brands in there simply because in my line of work we’re taught to take good care of our skin so I feel you get what you pay for in most cases. Not saying I spend a fortune on skincare but I definitely

spend that bit extra. Obviously some of the cheaper priced brands are decent, but just make sure to do a bit of research before using them. Your skin will thank you. 4. GET A FACIAL - I know it’s January and it’s a long wait til payday but January is also the time where almost every Skincare Salon has the best offers on facials. If you’ve never had a facial and are looking to treat yourself, I would highly recommend it. Personally I have made a deal with myself that i’ll get one facial every 12 weeks for 2017, simply because it has been over a year since I’ve gotten one. Also if you have no idea about products or what skin type you have it’s great to get a facial as the person doing it will tell you everything you need to know about your skin.

PRODUCT OF THE WEEK

Since we’re focusing on skincare this week, my product of the week is definitely the Lancôme Advanced Genifique Mask. And yes, I work for Lancôme but no, I am in no way biased or getting in any way paid for this. I got one mask as a sample at work and then bought a pack myself. This sheet mask will literally make you feel like you have a new face. Your skin will be GLOWING! You get six masks in a pack for €73, I use it once every two weeks just to get length out of them. If you don’t believe my rave on how amazing this mask is, both Jaclyn Hill(YouTube Queen) and James Kavanagh(Irish Snapchat King) have gave it their stamp of approval. In each mask there’s half a bottle of the Advanced Genifique Serum. The texture adheres to the contours of your face, almost like a second skin, for an intensely hydrating, spa-like treatment. Immediately after use, see instant radiance, plumping, and smoothness. This serum-soaked face mask works to reveal more rested, supple skin, leaving a cushiony soft and refreshed feeling. If you’re feeling like treating yourself, buy one and thank me later. And hey, it’s a cheaper option than a facial!

That’s it for this week! I hope you found this little list of tips helpful! If anyone wants to get in contact with me email me at ‘BexblahBeauty@gmail.com’ or message my Facebook page ‘Bexblah Beauty.

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS. I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING AN ABSOLUTELY AMAZING WEEK I’m finally properly back on track after Christmas/ New Years and it feels amaaaazing. But before I move any big forward in 2017 I must reflect on 2016. If you remember, in my last fitness page of 2016 I wrote all about what I achieved fitness wise. I lost roughly 4 stone, and fell in love with the gym. Here’s a little before comparison picture of me in Christmas 2015 vs 2016… Clearly, the right is 2015 and the left is 2016. It’s not the best transformation picture, because I was wearing all black in the before picture and also covering up as much as possible. But you can really notice a difference in my face! This time of year can be really tough for some people who want to lose weight just because everyone and their mother talk about “weightloss”, “the newest diet”, “cutting carbs” and lots of other topics. The problem is that every single person is different and cookie cutter diets can only work so much until they can’t, because your body and is completely unique and you need a meal plan/exercise plan

18

TRALEE ADVERTISER

specific to you and your goals! I cannot emphasise enough how important it is for you to go to an informed professional and learn from them what is right and best for you. I tried the “one size fits all” diets, the endless chicken broccoli and rice, the counting points, the no carb/low carb and none of these worked half as good as getting a personal trainer who knew what they were talking about and had my best interest at heart. Yeah it might take a little longer and a lot more hard work, but it’s 100% worth it. If you are wondering what I did, I worked with two different online coaches different parts of last year. Rob Lipsett from April - July and Recalibrated bodies from October - December. Both I would highly recommend.

For 2017?

At the end of January I’m going to get another plan with Recalibrated Bodies. I’m not where I want to be yet and I still need to work hard to get there. I’m going to work hard, eat right and have a balance in my life! It works… trust me!

HEALTHY RECIPES

TRALEE ADVERTISER

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2017 I define myself as a “porketarian,” I can’t get enough of the meat. For this luscious chili, I uses incredibly flavorful and succulent pork cheeks - an unusual cut worth seeking out. If pork cheeks aren’t available, pork shoulder (cut into 2-inch pieces) can be substituted, this dish is a bit of work but great for a family or crowd and very worth it

PORK CHEEK AND BLACK-EYED PEA CHILI INGREDIENTS

• 1 tablespoon ground coriander • 1 tablespoon sweet smoked paprika • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 5 pounds cleaned and trimmed pork cheeks • Salt and freshly ground pepper • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 1 pound slab bacon, cut into 1/2-inch dice • 1 onion, finely chopped • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 2 jalapeños, seeded and very finely chopped • 2 red bell peppers, finely diced • One 12-ounce bottle amber ale or porter • 2 cups chicken stock or low-sodium broth • 2 cups canned whole Italian tomatoes, crushed • 2 canned chipotles in adobo, seeded and minced • 1 pound dried black-eyed peas, picked over and rinsed • 1 small cinnamon stick • Shredded smoked cheddar cheese, cilantro leaves and crème fraîche, for serving

METHOD

1. In a large enameled cast-iron casserole, heat 2 tablespoons of the oil. Add half of the pork and cook over moderately high heat, turning once, until browned, about 8 minutes. Transfer the pork to a plate. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil and brown the remaining pork over moderate heat. Transfer the pork to the plate. 2. Add the bacon to the casserole and cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until browned and slightly crisp, about 7 minutes. Add the onion, garlic, jalapeños and bell peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes. 3. Return the pork cheeks to the casserole along with any accumulated juices. Add the ale, chicken stock, tomatoes, chipotles, black-eyed peas and cinnamon stick and bring to a boil. Cover and cook over very low heat until the meat and beans are tender, about 2 1/2 hours. Season the chili with salt and pepper. Spoon off the fat from the surface and discard the cinnamon stick. Serve the chili in bowls. Pass the smoked cheddar, cilantro and creme fraiche at the table. Recipes by

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE...

KERRY ATHLETES BOUND FOR LITHUANIA Tralee/Kerry will once again participate at this year’s International Children’s Games and Cultural Festival, which will be held in the city of Kaunas, Lithuania from July 04-09. In total 18 athletes from Kerry will participate in what is the thirteenth consecutive year of participation of Tralee ICG at the Games.

the excitement and joys of participation at this level on the faces of our young boys and girls at the event. “We are the first to admit that this would not be possible without the co-operation of the athlete’s parents and members of the public who are ever supportive of our fund raising efforts.

Tralee will be represented in boys’ soccer, girls’ basketball, Judo and track and field athletics. The host venue Kaunas, and competition among between 1300-1500 athletes from all around the world, combine to provide an exciting mix of culture, sport, education and social interaction for these young Kerry stars.

We are also appreciative of the support of local businesses and indeed of Kerry County Council, whom we represent at the Games”. Teams have been selected to represent Tralee ICG in Judo, Athletics and Ladies 3v3 basketball. The remaining 8 soccer players will be finalised on Sunday evening after the completion of further trials. The ball is truly up and rolling now for the Kaunas Games and athletes and parents are looking forward to making the necessary arrangements for travel and accommodation and helping with the necessary fundraising activities in the months ahead.

“We have been participating and successfully competing at these Games in many disciplines for 12 years now and this year’s event in Kaunas, Lithuania is likely to provide our athletes with fantastic colour and excitement, new experiences of culture in the Baltic states and superb sporting competition” according to Tralee ICG secretary, Mike Culloty.

this year’s event will mean that over 300 Tralee and Kerry athletes will have attended the Games since 2005 in cities all over the world in Europe, Asia and North America. The Games provide a fantastic, never to be forgotten experience of international sporting competition, and the opportunity of a lifetime for these young sport stars to pit themselves against their peers from around the world in their chosen sport disciplines. Tralee, at the present time, remains the only Irish representatives at what is the world’s largest annual multisport youth event, which is recognized by the International

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... STUDENTS... LIVE, LEARN & DISCOVER AT I.T. TRALEE Every January, 6th year secondary students all over Ireland begin to weigh up their options, looking towards their futures and the opportunities they can target in the coming year. As the CAO deadline of Wednesday 1st of February is fast approaching it can be overwhelming attempting to choose which path they should follow. Choosing which college to put as a first choice is a big decision for both the students and their families. IT Tralee has always been a popular choice for students from the greater Munster region and all over Ireland and with such a wide range of perks, from the academic to social, it is no wonder it retains this status. Prospective college students look for a variety of courses, the standard and quality of lecturing staff and facilities, as well as looking towards their future career and graduation opportunities. IT Tralee, with courses ranging from Business and Computing to Agricultural Engineering, Health and Leisure, Nursing and Pharmaceutical Science ticks all of these boxes plus more. Speaking about the upcoming CAO deadline, President of IT Tralee, Dr Oliver Murphy

commented: “Students across Ireland have come to a major junction in their lives and are faced with a big decision on what path to take. Every year we look forward to welcoming a new group of students who choose to come on their exciting journey with us. With 41 high-quality internationally recognised and accredited courses through the CAO to choose from, we have something to suit everyone. Our staff are a huge asset and with one of the best student to staff ratios in the country you are not just a number, you are part of a concise, tightknit, world-class community that values independent thinking and fosters academic scholarship, along with diversity and a fulfilling student experience. We are all familiar with the well-known saying ‘college, the best years of your life’, and this is not all attributed to the academic perks of college but also the fun student lifestyle. College is an opportunity to try different things, experience the new and exciting, while making memories and a network of friends for life. There are over 70 clubs and societies to join and for those

AIB BACK KERRY SPORTS ACADEMY AT I.T. TRALEE

looking to train their body as well as their brain, there is a state-of-the-art €15m sports academy opening in 2018. While college is an exciting time, it can also be stressful and worrying for parents and students faced with funding this adventure into further education. “Parents and students will be glad to hear that the cost of living in Tralee is significantly lower than Dublin (50% less) and Limerick or Cork (25% less). There is a whole host of affordable, high quality student accommodations available here, all within walking distance of the IT Tralee campuses and the many amenities that the Tralee area has to offer. This is surely an important factor when weighing up options,” added President Murphy.

One-to-one assistance will be available to Students on Friday 13th January at 2pm at the Business and IT Building at the IT Tralee North Campus and again those interested can find out more information at www.ittralee.ie/caoinformation. For more information on the perks and opportunities that studying at IT Tralee has to offer and for queries from students or parents interested

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! A MAN SEES AN ATTRACTIVE GIRL SITTING ALONE

At a restaurant, a man sees an attractive girl sitting alone at the next table. Suddenly, she sneezes, and a glass eye comes flying out of her eye socket. It hurls by the man, and he snatches it from the air and hands it back to her. “This is so embarrassing,” the girl says, and she pops her eye back in place. “I’m sorry to have disturbed you. Let me buy a drink to make it up to you. May I join you?” He agrees. The girls is good at keeping conversation, stunningly pretty, and the man finds they have a lot in common. He asks her phone number and then he compliments her: “You are the most charming girl I’ve ever encountered. Are you this nice to every guy you meet?” “No”, she replies. “You just happened to catch my eye.”

A MAN AND A WOMAN FIND THEMSELVES SHARING A SLEEPING CAR ON A TRAIN.

In the middle of the night, the woman wakes the man up and says “Hey! Will you go get me another blanket? I’m freezing!” The man smiles and says, “I have a better idea. Why don’t you and I, just for tonight, pretend we’re married?” The woman thinks about it, and with a devlish grin, she agrees. The man then says, “Get your own damn blanket! I’m trying to sleep”

At the ConorPass , Gerry looks down at the 1000 foot drop and says, ‘Dis looks like a grand place…’ He takes two birds out of the box, puts one on each shoulder and jumps off the cliff. A STORE THAT SELLS NEW HUSBANDS HAS OPENED IN LONDON

A store that sells new husbands has opened in London, where a woman may go to choose a husband. Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates: You may visit this store ONLY ONCE! There are six floors and the value of the products increase as the shopper ascends the flights. The shopper may choose any item from a particular floor, or may choose to go up to the next floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building! So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband. On the first floor the sign on the door reads: Floor 1 - These men Have Jobs She is intrigued, but continues to the second floor, where the sign reads: Floor 2 - These men Have Jobs and Love Kids. ‘That’s nice,’ she thinks, ‘but I want more.’ So she continues upward. The third floor sign reads: Floor 3 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, and are Extremely Good Looking. ‘Wow,’ she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going. She goes to the fourth floor and the sign reads: Floor 4 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Dropdead Good Looking and Help With Housework. ‘Oh, mercy me!’ she exclaims, ‘I can hardly stand it!’ Still, she goes to the fifth floor and the sign reads: Floor 5 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Dropdead Gorgeous, Help with Housework, and Have a Strong Romantic Streak. She is so tempted to stay, but she goes to the sixth floor, where the sign reads: Floor 6 - You are visitor 31,456,012 to this floor. There are no men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please. Thank you for shopping at the Husband Store.

TORQUING CARS! RUSTY 1956 ROVER CAR PARKED IN SAME SPOT ON STREET FOR SO LONG IT HAS BECOME A LOCAL LANDMARK

A rusty car has been parked in the same parking spot for at least a decade. The Rover 90 dating back to 1956 has become something of a local landmark in the Cardiff street The car once belonged to Dennis Desmond, a gold miner who lived in Wales but who travelled to South Africa regularly for work. He would leave the prized possession behind for years at a time.Andrew Barnes, 51, who now owns the car, said the car was now parked across the road from where he lives on Cornwall Street in Grangetown. He said it had been there for at least a decade.“My uncle bought it in the 1970s and he used it on and off. He worked in South Africa and he’d go for two or three years at a time,” he told Wales Online .“He’d then come home for six weeks and build it back up and then unbuild it and put it on blocks and so on.When he got fed up he left it to my mum who gave it to me. I’ve now owned the car for donkey’s years.”The car, which is taxed and insured, has been gathering rust for a long time – but is still in working condition.Andrew says he wants to restore the car to its former glory, but hasn’t got anywhere to work on it.“I want to do a complete restoration job. I’m still thinking about it. If I can find a place to do it, I will.”The car has become a local icon for the area because of the amount of time it’s been there. That doesn’t faze Andrew. He said: “I think everyone in Cardiff knows about it.And Dennis, the car’s original owner, doesn’t show signs of slowing down either. Now in his 70s, Dennis has been ordering cement for building work on his bungalow in Rhiwbina.Andrew said: “He doesn’t stop.”

THE FUTURE OF WORK? NISSAN UNVEILS ‘WORLD’S FIRST’ ELECTRIC MOBILE OFFICE IN A VAN - AND IT’S AMAZING

The number of people working from home has soared in the past ten years, thanks to improved internet connectivity and broader adoption of flexible working practices. But why restrict yourself to your living room or kitchen when you can travel the country in your very own mobile office? Electric car maker Nissan has unveiled the e-NV200 WORKSPACe, a professional office environment on wheels, offering a glimpse of what desk-based employment could look like in the future. The office features an integrated fold-out desk, touchscreen computer, wireless internet, smartphone-controlled LED lights, wireless phone charging, Bluetooth audio system, mini fridge and barista-quality coffee machine. It can be rapid-charged from empty to 80% power in just 30 minutes, and there’s even an internal mount for a folding Brompton Bike, allowing users to make short trips around the city or complete the “last mile” of any journey. Nissan collaborated with UK-based design workshop Studio Hardie to transform its zero-emission e-NV200 van into the one-off e-NV200 WORKSPACe concept. The average UK commuter spends £358 on travelling to work each month, with London office space fetching £1,619 per square metre annually, according to the TUC. With electric vehicles costing as little as £0.02 per mile to run, Nissan claims the e-NV200 WORKSPACe offers a cost-effective desk space solution.

WATCH OUT - ONE IN NINE CARS SOLD STILL HAVE FINANCE OUTSTANDING !

The number of cars being sold with repayments still owed has risen dramatically in just six months. SHARE According to new figures obtained by the Irish Independent, the proportion of ‘indebted’ vehicles being offered for sale went from 9.5pc in June to 11.5pc in December. That spells danger for unsuspecting buyers because if you buy a car with money still owed, the lending institution can legally seize it and leave you at the total loss of what you paid for it. Such losses can range to tens of thousands of euro. Buying an average 2013-reg car that is subsequently seized could mean losing upwards of €10,000. The significant increase in ‘finance-owed’ cars on sale is pinpointed in an analysis by car-history check company Cartell.ie. It said nearly 30pc of cars registered in the past three years are being put up for sale with finance outstanding. On the face of it that suggests a lot of people cannot meet their repayments, and have over-stretched in the rush to get into a new car. But there is also the strong likelihood that many people who have Personal Contract Plan (PCP) lease deals are testing the market for the value of their vehicle before entering a new contract. Experts say some may be trying to see how much they can get over and above the Guaranteed Future Minimum Value (GMFV) agreed when they took out the PCP originally. The more they can get above the GMFV the more equity they will have in the car at the end of the PCP deal. That could mean having to come up with less money to begin a new plan, or having cash to spare. But there is a growing concern too that the number of cars for sale with finance owed reflects an inability to meet monthly repayments.(Indo Motoring ) 34

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR TIME FOR THE SOCCER PUBLIC TO BACK THE KDL: After a very positive meeting of the Kerry District League the correct decision was taken to enter a team into the Eirtircity U17 League for a second year. League Chairman Sean O’Keeffe and Secretary John Regan both gave comprehensive overviews of last season with particular emphasis to the amount of work it takes off the field. The Kerry District League pride themselves on the way they do things and they made sure every visiting team got food after the game – something sadly not reciprocated by other teams when the Kerry team travelled to their home venues. The logistics needed to give the team the best possible preparation meant a large addition to the workload of the volunteers who run the Kerry District League and additional help will be sought this season. While the cost of running a team over a 22 game League, plus a Cup game, was a factor it was said that certain cutbacks can reduce the budget for the team in the season while additional finances will need to be raised. However all these issues can be overcome and the overwhelming feeling at the meeting was that it would be a huge setback in providing the pathway to the highest level for our elite players. While the team won ‘only 3 games and drew 1’ last season the development of the players was obvious to see. It must not be forgotten that Kerry were invited late into the League and were playing catch up to sides that were involved in the inaugural short season. It must also be remembered that around 9 of the players from last season are underage again this season and will bring that experience with them. The KDL Committee will now work on putting its management team in place and will hold trials for this season’s squad. However one of the negatives that was mentioned was the lack of support from the wider soccer community. It is hard to see players putting in such an effort without getting the crowds they deserve in the stands. While everyone’s circumstances are different surely many parents and family members can spare the two hours to come along and see their sons in action. Also clubs should consider bringing some of their underage teams to the games to allow the players of the future to see the standard required to compete at League of Ireland level. And I would call on anyone who supports soccer to get away from the televised games on a Sunday and come along to Mounthawk Park and support this Kerry side that are competing at the highest level. Finally I would call on all our public representatives to pencil in at least one game to see these fantastic young role models in action. Maybe there can be some ‘small’ forms of funding found to support League of Ireland football in Kerry!! These are exciting times in the soccer world. The 17’s League is now established and coming on stream this August will be an u15 League. Applications are being worked through at the moment with the Kerry Schoolboys League having expressed it initial interest. This will obviously change the landscape of underage football but what an opportunity it will be for our elite young players

36

to play on the national stage week in week out. But that’s for a few months down the line. The work on getting the u17’s right has started and if anyone out there is interested in coming on board then please contact John Regan at Mounthawk Park. And let’s all get behind the team when the season kicks off in the coming weeks. KERRY’S STILL IN LINE FOR OSCAR: Kerry got the 2-2 draw they needed against West Cork to progress to the knock out stages of the Oscar Traynor Competition, the Junior Inter League competition. Kerry went ahead twice through Jonathan Downey and Ritchie Hurley but West Cork pulled it back twice. David Hennessy had to make a number of good saves to keep Kerry in the game but they also had chances so a draw, on a tough pitch, was a fair result. Kerry now wait to see who their opponents will be with a place in Last 8 the prize. Kerry Youths know that a win against Clare on Sunday week will also see them progress to the Last 12. They will face the runners up in the Galway/Clare/ Combined Counties group for a place in their quarter final. GREYHOUND BAR KO CUP ROUND 2 DRAW: The 2nd round draw for the major Cup in Kerry, the Greyhound Bar was made this week. There are a number of Tralee teams involved: Dingle Bay Rovers v St Brendans Park FC, Windmill United or Camp United v Ballyheigue Athletic . Castleisland A v Tralee Dynamos, Strand Road or Mastergeeha v Rattoo Rovers . QPR or Mitchels Avenue v Ballymac Galaxy or Classic FC, CK Killarney v CSKA Tralee . Byes: Tralee Celtic get a bye if they beat Ballyhar Dynamos. KERRY AND THE OLD ENEMY GO TO BATTLE AGAIN:

By now there is no need to go over the big win by Kerry, represented by the u21’s, over Tipperary but suffice to say it was an impressive performance. And one that will really stand to the u21’s as well when their Munster Championship begins in March. This year Kerry, under Jack O’Connor, are hoping to end the poor run of the u21’s and bring the Munster crown back to the Kingdom. With the success of

Friday 13th January 2016

the minors, going for an amazing 4 in a row of All Ireland titles, and the seniors always going to be in the Last 4 at least, the u21 title is the missing one from the full set. Back to the Seniors and there McGrath Cup Group game throws in against Cork in Mallow at 2pm on Sunday. In mid-week Cork will have faced Tipperary and if they win as expected then Kerry will know what they need to do. But Tipperary will be smarting after the heavy loss to Kerry so a backlash is expected and anything is possible in these early season games. It will also be interesting to see how strong the Kerry squad is on Sunday. With many regulars not available some of the u21’s could be drafted in. Eamonn Fitzmaurice has said he is hoping to reach the McGrath Cup final to give his side another very competitive game before the League begins so once again a Kerry and Cork game is an important one. HURLERS HOPE TO LOWER THE BANNER: The Kerry hurlers and their new management team were relatively happy with their performance against Cork last Sunday. While they went down 1-28 to 0-18 they were well in the game for 40 minutes which was a decent display. The Kerry players have been training away while their management situation was being sorted out and this performance bodes well for the season ahead. This Sunday they face Clare in their first home game of the Co-Op Superstores Munster Hurling League. The Banner will be making their seasonal debut but have a huge number of top quality players at their disposal so they will pose a big challenge to Kerry. PARNELLS NEWS: Senior Sessions: Last weekend the Seniors started their sessions for the New Year. Everyone involved is looking forward to the new season. Members are asked to check out the Facebook page for an interesting article featuring an interview with Micheal O’Hehir in Gaelic Park in 1965. Marchers Wanted: While Christmas has just passed thoughts of clubs are turning to St Patrick’s Day. Parnells are looking for volunteers to march on Thursday, March 17th. More details to follow. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 1, 4, 5, 23. The Jackpot this Sunday will be e3,300 with the draw taking placed in O’Dwyers. Academy Back: The u6’s to u10’s are back in training in the Presentation Hall with the 6’s and 8’S ON AT 11am and the older ages training from 11am. Everyone is welcome to come along this Sunday. The Juvenile AGM was held this week with tributes paid to the outgoing Chairman Seamus Murphy and Secretary Mary Wallace. Jason Sinnott takes over in the Chair with Brenda Doody as the Secretary. A full committee has been appointed to run the Juvenile section for year ahead. The club continues to look for new parents and coaches to help the running of the Juvenile section. Jason Duffy Memorial Cycle 2017: Well done to the 130 cyclists who took part in the Jimmy Duffy Memorial Cycle. All the proceeds will be going to the Red Cross. AUSTIN STACKS NEWS: The u6/8/10’s are back in training this Sunday in Mouthawk Gym. The u6’s commence at 10am. The juvenile club held a very successful AGM with the committee ready for the year ahead. The club congratulates its u16 members who were on The Green CBS and Mercy Mounthawk teams who were in Frewen Cup action. Best wishes to the players in Munster Colleges this week. SCOR: The County finals of Senior Scor will take place on the 18th of February in Castleisland so those thinking of taking part should get in touch with your clubs now. The quiz will take place on the same date at 6pm with the other competitions starting at 8pm. Scor na bPaisti for primary school pupils will hold their North Kerry semi-

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER final on March 11th while the quiz teams go straight to the County Final on March 26th. Well done to the Na Gaeil Leiru /Sketch group who put on a great performance at the Munster Scor na nOg finals. They were the only Tralee representative at this stage. Sadly their performance was not enough to see them through with Kerry’s only winner being the Spa Killarney set dancers.

ends of the court. Paul McMahon also made a notable impact when he came off the bench as Goran Pantovic picked up a 5th foul after a huge nights work. Pemberton top scored for the Warriors on 32 followed by Pantovic and Leonard on 11 and Donaghy on 10. Garvey’s Tralee Warriors are at home this Sunday night when they face KUBS at 8pm hoping that great run continues into 2017.

KERRY ATHLETES BOUND FOR LITHUANIA: Tralee/Kerry will once again participate at this year’s International Children’s Games and Cultural Festival, which will be held in the city of Kaunas, Lithuania from July 04-09. In total 18 athletes from Kerry will participate in what is the thirteenth consecutive year of participation of Tralee ICG at the Games. “We are the first to admit that this would not be possible without the co-operation of the athlete’s parents and members of the public who are ever supportive of our fund raising efforts. We are also appreciative of the support of local businesses and indeed of Kerry County Council, whom we represent at the Games”. Teams have been selected to represent Tralee ICG in Judo, Athletics and Ladies 3v3 basketball. The remaining 8 soccer players will be selected after the completion of further trials. Tralee ICG’s participation at this year’s event will mean that over 300 Tralee and Kerry athletes will have attended the Games since 2005 in cities all over the world in Europe, Asia and North America. Tralee, at the present time, remains the only Irish representatives at what is the world’s largest annual multi-sport youth event, which is recognized by the International Olympic Committee. The travelling squads are: Basketball: 3v3 Rachel Kilgallon , Aoife Dillane, Mary O Connell, Rebecca Conway Judo: Chris Palmer, Sean Murphy, Marco Antonio Kauric Athletics: Mervyn Shalamba, Basit Oyejambi, Sean Pollmen-Daamen Soccer: To be finalised.

ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL RESULTS AND FIXTURES: In the Academy Boys game Rathmore just got the better of St Brendans 28-23 while the u14 Division 3 side narrowly lost to St Paul’s 30-35. This Friday night, January 13th the u14 Division 2 side play St Paul’s in the Aura in Killarney while on Sunday January 15th St Brendan’s u14 Division 3 side are at home to St Anne’s in Moyderwell at 1pm. Next Tuesday the u12 Division 2 side take on St Paul’s in Killarney’s Aura from 6pm.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS CONTINUES FOR WARRIORS: Tralee Warriors made the long trip to Belfast a winning one defeating Star 70-64 in a vital win as the chase for play-off places intensifies. The win continues a great Festive period for Garvey’s Tralee Warriors who defeated Neptune in the SuperLeague and won the Castleisland Blitz. Playing without Dusan Bogdanovic at the weekend Warriors showed impressive levels of skill, resilience and character to continue an impressive run of wins. On the night Warriors were hot from the 3 point line with Trae Pemberton, Darragh O’Hanlon and Ryan Leonard draining 8 between them while Kieran Donaghy was again impressive at both

PJ COSTELLO LEADS THE CHARGE IN FENIT ON HIS 65TH CONSECUTIVE CHRISTMAS DAY DIP! Because last week’s column was a one-off we did not have room for this piece on the Christmas Day Swim in Fenit. Enjoy thinking back to the big day which is only 40 plus weeks away from coming around again. Gale force winds, heavy rain and strong waves failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the adventurous cohort, who braved the elements for the traditional Christmas Day swim at Locke’s Beach, Fenit. This was the 65th consecutive swim in Fenit where a wonderful tradition was inaugurated in 1952. Thankfully, the strong winds and heavy rain had eased considerably by the time the crowds began to gather in the village. Although the wet and windy weather ended any hopes of a white Christmas, a huge turn-out of swimmers made light of the conditions to enjoy a seasonal dip as a large crowd looked on. All the regular Christmas Day swimmers were present to take part in a well-established and popular swim. The buzz of excitement and giddy anticipation was tangible as people gathering in the car park were met by lively seasonal music. Members of RNLI Fenit served up a variety of seasonal refreshments while the gathering numbers were entertained with songs and revelry. The rain had reduced to a drizzle as the swimmers lined up on the beach at 11.55am for a lively rendition of Jingle Bells. Even the dying sting of Storm Conor was in benevolent mood and had moved on before the traditional charge to the sea at noon. The honour of leading the charge this year fell to the indomitable PJ Costello, who has faithfully participated in every Christmas swim since 1952. As there was a full high tide in Tralee bay this year, there was little sandy beach available to the swimmers as they raced into the choppy sea and the inrushing strong waves. The majority of swimmers did the customary three charges into the sea. All the swimmers behaved sensibly and got in, got down, got out and got warm. A special feature of the day was the presence of many people home for Christmas. A substantial cohort of first timers and young swimmers also took the plunge into the cold sea. The sizable collection went to RNLI Fenit, whose members were in position with their collection boxes from 11am and were generously supported by the festive crowd. The RNLI also provided piping hot soup, tea and coffee for one and all throughout the day. The warm refreshments went down a treat after the swim. Then it was time to head home for a warm shower before tucking-in to the turkey and ham. The appetite for the traditional fare had been nicely whetted by another unforgettable Christmas Day swim. Long may the tradition continue! GOOD START TO THE NEW YEAR FOR HARRIERS:

The opening athletic event of 2017 took place at the Nenagh Arena and it proved to be a good meet for Tralee Harriers. The club won 3 gold medals on the first day with Eoin O’Carroll winning in the 60m and the Long Jump while Cathal Fitzgibbon won the Junior Men’s 1500m. On Sunday Cillian Griffin was the winner of the Boys Pentathlon with Jordan Kissane taking silver in the u15 section. Aoibheann O’Brien in the Junior Women’s 60m and long jump won silver and she was also part of the 4x200 Junior Women’s Relay team along with Orla O’Reilly, Rachel Bowler and Aoife O’Carroll. St Brendan’s also did well with 4 athletes winning medals in various age groups of the Pentahlons. In the Munster Star Awards Darragh Courtney (St Brendan’s) and Aoibheann O’Brien (Tralee Harriers) were honoured while in the Club Awards section the Best Junior/Senior Indoor Club went to the Harriers. WHO WILL FOLLOW ESCAPISM? The 2017 Gallivan Murphy Hooper Dolan Juvenile Classic was launched this week. This race is now regarded as the leading unraced event with the 2015 winner Sidarian Vega and finalist Ballymac Matt going onto win the 2015 Boylesports Race Of Champions and the 2015 Greyhound Derby. Escapism was successful in 2016 and he also won the Derby. The launch was attended by representatives of the sponsors GMHD.ie and Declan Dowling, the Sales and Operations Manager at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium. Entries for the event which starts on Friday, February 10th are now being taken for January 2015 whelps or later. Any owners or trainers who wish to trail their dogs in Tralee from here to close of entries on Tuesday, February 7th should call the racing office on 061 448057. TRALEE GO TO ENNIS FOR VITAL RUGBY CLASH: Tralee Rugby Club have struggled all season in the Munster J2, having lost all seven of their League games and are in danger of relegation. Considering they were one of the main teams in J1 just a few seasons ago this would be a tough blow for the club. Tralee travels to second from bottom club Ennis this weekend with 6 games remaining so a victory is vital. TRALEE GOLF CLUB IN COUNTRIES TOP 10: Take them seriously or not lists of the Top 100 are widely read. Golf Digest Ireland has released its 2017 list of the Top 100 courses in the country and Tralee is joined by Warterville and Ballybunion in the Top 10. Those involved in the Barrow Course will be delighted that they have leap frogged over Ballybunion into 6th.

RESULTS: In the Scotch Foursome the winners were Bob Dillon and Kevin Rolls. Second were Peter Nolan and Mike Galvin. In the Ladies 9 Hole Re-Entry the winner was Catherine McCarthy with Fionnuala Mann second. Fionnuala completed a good weekend by winning the New Year Hamper Round 2. Second here was Ber Walsh.
