Sophie is starting the 1st year of her degree in September and wishes to get a part time job to help with finances.

So let’s take a look at some of her rights in the workplace.

The minimum wage at present is €9.25 per hour. This does not mean that everyone is automatically entitled to receive this, it is for an experienced ( 2 years) Adult worker over 18. if you are under 18 you are only guaranteed up to 70% of the national minimum wage - €6.48 per hour. If you are in first year of employment over 18 it is €7.40 per hour and if the 2nd year €8.33 per hour.

All employees are entitled by law to a payslip. A pay slip is essentially a statement in writing from the employer to the employee that outlines the total pay before tax and all details of any deductions from pay.

If Sophie takes up a job in a bar or restaurant, which is popular amongst student due to the evening hours she should note that there is nothing in law to state she is automatically entitled to tips/gratuity the customers may leave. However, the law does not require her to hand these tips to her employer either! At the end of the day it is down to the custom of the establishment, but note that if tips are collected by management and paid to staff through the payroll, then these tips are subject to tax in the normal way.

She may find that those hours do not suit her so when leaving a job where you have been for a short time her employer is entitled to at least one week’s notice if she has been there 13 weeks or more. If she has been working for her employer for less than 13 weeks and has no contractual obligation to give notice then the she is not obliged to give notice. It should be noted too that an employer is under no legal obligation to provide a written or oral reference when an employee leaves so she should check this out beforehand.

If Sophie is on unpaid sick leave or leaves her job then her tax liability may be reduced and she may be entitled to some tax back. For PAYE workers your tax liability is spread out evenly over the year. To ensure that this is achieved, your tax liability is normally calculated on a cumulative basis. This means that when an employer calculates your tax liability, they actually calculate the total tax due from 1 January to the date which your most recent wages are paid. This means if your income is reduced, you will have unused tax credits and may be due a tax refund. It is always better to check this out straight away when leaving employment at the local tax office.

Gorgeous Scallops, the King of Shellfish!

Shellfish are often overlooked or shied away from...

But really there is no need...They are easy to cook and wonderfully tasty. One of my favourites and one that is very popular in our restaurant, Croi is scallops, the king of shellfish. Here are two recipes you should definitely try.

SCALLOPS WITH WARM TOMATO-BASIL DRESSING INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • •

1 teaspoon coriander seed 1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 2 tomatoes—peeled, seeded and diced 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh fennel 1 tablespoon chopped chervil or tarragon 1 tablespoon finely shredded basil, plus baby leaves for garnish Salt and freshly ground pepper 16 sea scallops

METHOD In a saucepan, toast the coriander and fennel seeds over moderate heat until fragrant, about 2 minutes; transfer to a mortar and let cool. Pound until coarsely ground. Warm the 1/4 cup of oil in the same saucepan. Add the spices along with the lemon juice and let stand for 1 minute. Add the tomatoes, chopped fennel, chervil and shredded basil; season with salt and pepper. Light a grill or preheat a grill pan. Brush the scallops with oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill the scallops over high heat, turning once, until browned and just firm, about 4 minutes. Transfer the scallops to plates and spoon the warm tomato dressing on top. Garnish with basil leaves and serve.

SCALLOPS WITH BRUSSELS SPROUTS INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • •

1/4 cup crème fraîche 1/4 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon snipped chives 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Salt and freshly ground pepper 6 jumbo scallops (about 3/4 pound) 6 thin slices pancetta (about 2 ounces) 1/2 pound brussels sprouts, thinly sliced 1 shallot, thinly sliced 1 tablespoon butter 1 garlic clove, minced

METHOD

In a small bowl, whisk the crème fraîche with the finely grated lemon zest, fresh lemon juice, snipped chives and 1 tablespoon of the olive oil. Season the lemon-chive crème fraîche with salt and pepper.In a medium pan, heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil until shimmering. Generously season the scallops with salt and pepper and add them to the pan. Cook the scallops over moderately high heat, turning once, until they are golden and just cooked through, about 5 minutes. Transfer the scallops to a plate; tent with aluminum foil to keep warm.Meanwhile, in another medium pan, cook the pancetta over moderately high heat, turning once, until browned and crisp, about 4 minutes. Add the brussels sprouts and shallot and cook, stirring, until the brussels sprouts are softened but still bright green, about 2 minutes. Off the heat, stir in the butter and garlic and season with Recipes by salt and pepper; transfer to plates and top with the scallops. Serve with the lemon-chive crème fraîche.

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK! So… it’s 12 weeks until Christmas. WHAT?!

What has this got to do with fitness you ask?

Well, I’m using it as my motivation to get properly and fully back into consistency.

The past few weeks have I been training, yes.

Have I been eating good foods, yes. Have I been consistent, HELL NO. Now there’s nothing wrong with being a bit more relaxed when it comes to all things health and fitness related, I’ve come to realise that being 100% on track 100% of the time for me personally, is not living. BUT. For the next 12 weeks I want to be consistent AF and see what results I can achieve.

Am I waiting until Monday to become consistent, NO. Because if I have decided today then why put it on the backburner again? That makes no sense. It’s like ‘I want to start being consistent but sure I’ll wait til Monday’ no, it’s Thursday and I’m starting today.

Maybe you have some area of your life where you’re putting in some of the work sometimes, so you’re not reaching your full potential because you’re not consistent. This is your sign,

be consistent, put in the work you know needs to be put in.

Yeah I love balance, but I also love routine and schedule and pushing myself. And I’ve had a Summer(and September) of balance and fun and not being in routine, so I’m actually excited to become consistent.

For the first 4 weeks, from 21st September until 19th October I will be following one of my previous Recalibrated Bodies online plans and see how my body reacts to that. In that I have a specific meal and training plan which I will follow to get me refocused, then, according to how my body reacts, I will either go back tracking macros and making my own meals, or i may get another plan from Recalibrated Bodies.

I’m currently training in The Brandon Gym and I absolutely love it! They offer SO many classes, the newest is their Spin Sanity class - which is a Spin class but under lights and with music so the energy is absolutely insane. I’m going to do my first Spin Sanity class on Monday at 6:30pm, the classes are every Monday and Wednesday!

“KNEE CRACKING”!!!

Knee crepitations can cause a lot of worry and may eventually lead to movement avoiding behavior as negative beliefs are associated with crepitations. This can put people in a downward spiral of abnormal movement fueled by negative emotions. It is time for some reassurance!

No research to date has definitively linked crepitation noise and active pathology. 99% of a cohort of subjects with no pain had knee joint crepitation. If pain occurs with joint crepitations you should contact a health professional for assessment and advice.

Crepitations may result from tendons snapping over bony prominence’s on the surface of the joint for example in tendonitis. Inside the joint the displacement of the joint surfaces can create a vacuum which leads to the creation of gas bubbles within the joint. Collapse of these bubbles leads to the characteristic pop. Interestingly habitual knuckle cracking over years has not revealed osteoarthritis on examination.

The clunk on knee movement can be explained by the slip stick phenomenon. The movement of the knee cap and thigh bone are jerking and produce signals on vibration testing. These vibrations are reduced in osteoarthritis and almost lost in advanced osteoarthritis and most likely due to loss of joint lubrication.

Therefore joints which are revealed with most degenerative change are least likely to produce crepitus. What about the fine grating that is also normal as fluid flows through slightly rough surface behind the kneecap patella.

Did you know that the antelope uses knee crepitus to display dominance, so maybe we should see crepitus not as a sign of pathology but as a positive sign because our joints are mobile and well lubricated. Keep positive! You no longer need to see knee crepitus as a worrying sign just keep moving!!

LONGER FOOD TRAIL, TASTIER BITES, REFRESHING CRAFT BEER TRAIL This weekend’s Tralee Food Festival in association with Taste Kerry (Friday 22 to Sunday 24 September) will be the most important food event in the county capital this year as the town strives to promote local producers and restaurants to an appreciative and rapidly growing market.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: SMALL CLAIMS PROCEDURE Question I am not happy with work that a builder did on my house and will have to pay for someone else to finish the job properly. What can I do to recoup the additional expense?

Answer If your original builder is unwilling to compensate you, you may be able to pursue a claim against the builder through the Small Claims Procedure. The aim of this procedure is to provide an inexpensive, fast and easy way for consumers to resolve disputes without needing to employ a solicitor. The maximum amount you can claim is €2,000. The small claims service is provided through local District Court offices.

Anyone who has purchased goods or services for private use from someone selling them in the course of business may submit a claim using the Small Claims Procedure. You can make claims for faulty goods or bad workmanship, for minor damage to property, and for the non-return of rent deposits for certain kinds of rented properties, for example, a holiday home. Businesses involved in disputes with other businesses can also use the Small Claims Procedure.

To make a claim, you complete an application form which you can download from the Small Claims Procedure section of courts.ie or get from the Small Claims Registrar at the District Court office. Make sure you use the correct name and address of the person or company you want to make the claim against. The completed form and a fee of €25 should be lodged with the Small Claims Registrar. You can also apply online at the Courts Service Online website, csol.ie.

The Registrar sends a copy of your application to the person you are making the claim against. If the other party does not reply within 15 days of receiving your application, your claim will be automatically treated as undisputed and you can apply for a court order in your favour. If your claim is disputed, the Registrar will contact you and let you have a copy of the reasons why the other party is disputing your claim. TORQUING CARS! PAY-AS-YOU-GO CAR INSURANCE – HOW BRITISH(AND IRISH?) DRIVERS COULD SAVE THOUSANDS EVERY YEAR The traditional system of car insurance is complex and often results in drivers paying a higher premium, based on generalised claim patterns rather than their personal driving record.

From the actuaries, to the brokers and adjusters, there are between five and nine degrees of separation between the insurance underwriter and the customer. As each agent layers his fee on to the transaction, the eventual cost to drivers inevitably rises.

However, thanks to developments in cloud-based data collection and processing technologies, it doesn’t have to be this way. There is now an opportunity to not only reduce the middlemen, but also introduce “hyperflexible” insurance, both more affordable and more personalised than ever.

Launched in 2016, Cuvva combines usage-based insurance with hyperflexibility.

Its first product, Cuvva For Sharers, allows drivers to buy hourly insurance via a smartphone app. Of course, short-term insurance is nothing new. Comparison site Tempcover, insurer DayInsure and even heavyweights such as Admiral give drivers a range of prices for daily and hourly car insurance. The newcomer seems competitive on paper, but is it price alone that makes it so appealing?The three-minute registration process saves driver and payment card information.

To protect against fraud, you snap a photo of yourself and your licence initially, then the vehicle each time you use Cuvva. I found it’s a quick and easy way of accessing fully comprehensive cover for activities such as test driving a vehicle you’re looking to purchase, infrequent use of a friend’s car or even an emergency.

In April, Cuvva had launched its second product, For Owners, with claims of saving some drivers about 70 per cent on their annual policies.

ONE IN A MILLION - ICONIC PORSCHE 911

The one-millionth Porsche 911 rolled off the production line this week - more than half-a-century after the first was built.

Porsche’s rear-engined 911 is one of the world’s most iconic sports cars, having made its debut at the 1963 International Motor Show in Germany.

Back then it was fitted with a 2-litre engine, which developed 130bhp and was capable of a top speed of 131mph.

The one-millionth model, unveiled this week in Stuttgart, Germany, is based on the 911 Carrera S and boasts 450bhp along with a top speed of 193mph.

It has been painted in ‘Irish Green’, which is reminiscent of Ferry Porsche’s first official 911, and has a numerous decals to acknowledge the landmark number.

Dr Wolfgang Porsche, chairman of the Supervisory Board at Porsche AG, has been a part of the development of the 911 since day one.

He said: “54 years ago, I was able to take my first trips over the Grossglockner High Alpine Road with my father (Ferry).

“The feeling of being in a 911 is just as enjoyable now as it was then.

“That’s because the 911 has ensured that the core values of our brand are as visionary today as they were in the first Porsche 356/1 from 1948.”

Despite being more than 50 years old, car fans continue to line up to buy a Porsche 911 - with more than 32,000 sold around the world last year.

And Porsche estimates more than 70 per cent of all 911s remain on the road.

There are no plans to sell the one-millionth 911. It will go on a world tour which will include visits to the Nurburgring, USA, China and Scottish Highlands before ending up in the Porsche Museum.

JAGUAR E-TYPE AT PIPPA MIDDLETON’S WEDDING IS WORLD’S OLDEST E-TYPE.

The Jaguar E-type in which Pippa Middleton and her husband James Matthews departed the nuptials is the oldest surviving Series 1 Roadster, built in February 1961 and registered as 77 RW on the 24th of that month.

It is the two-seater open version of what has been described as the most beautiful car in the world, with a 3.8-litre straight-six under the bonnet developing 265bhp. It was also available as a fixed-head coupé (FHC).

According to the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust, 77 RW is owned by Mr Michael Kilgannon and is on permanent loan to the Trust

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR TO BET OR NOT TO BET: Over the last few weeks you will be aware of the betting stories that have come to light surrounding the SSE Airtricity League. Two Athlone United players have been suspended for 12 months but this is under appeal by the players union the PFAI. Having followed the story is seems there is no evidence that they or any other player benefited financially from the bets that were placed on the game against Longford Town. The only thing that seems to have led to them being found guilty is very poor play on the night. And the conundrum is that while these investigations are on-going all bad play or mistakes by players will be suspect and that is not a good place to be for any sport.

The latest story involves Premier League Bray Wanderers who were at home to Division 1’s Waterford with the visitors winning 5-0. The FAI has placed this in the hands of the Gardai so we don’t know yet what irregular betting patterns triggered the interest of the FAI and the authorities. We should remember that Waterford are going for promotion so this friendly was very important to their fringe players while Bray’s players are really only hoping that the season ends and they stay out of the relegation dog fight. So we need to wait and see what happens in this case.

But on a wider point there is no doubt that betting in sport is certainly becoming a major issue and if people think it is confined to soccer then that is certainly not the case.

Look at the email sent out by a betting company after the Kerry minor win. David Clifford is odds on at 2/7 to start for the Kerry seniors before he joins an AFL team, which is 9/4 to happen first. There are other prices quoted and one can say that these are only fun bets and they are for the vast majority of us. But for those with a gambling problem there is no such thing as a fun bet.

And there is no doubt that young sportspersons at risk, if not at more risk, of becoming addicted. They have time on their hand and if in a full time sports position then probably lots of money.

But the temptation can be more for amateur players who might be

trying to hold down a job or are out of a job. Odds being offered on local games or games that in reality don’t mean a lot in the grand scheme of things have the probability to be ‘influenced’.

I can’t speak of other sports as I would not have as much insight as I have into soccer. There is lots of anecdotal evidence of local games in Leagues – not in Kerry let me add – attracting bets that can lead to things not going as they should.

Having a bet on your team that are in a big game and it is being quoted by betting companies is not the issue. Lots of us do that and there is no harm in that. Just as there is no harm in have a bet.

But we now live in an age were so many games of all levels are either being streamed live or have people working for Sports Data companies and are sending them stats in real time – first corner, first yellow card, number of passes made and it goes on and on. And as I said this is just in soccer. I am sure rugby and the GAA games are under the same scrutiny.

The games might seem inconsequential – like a friendly between Bray and Waterford but if a betting syndicate somewhere thinks it can make big money on it then the game becomes very important but not in the sporting manner that it should be.

In an ideal world no player in any sport could be ‘got at’ but we don’t live in Utopia. If you are struggling financially and somehow you get contacted to ‘miss a free / penalty, get a booking or sent off etc etc then who would say that they would not be tempted.

Are the governing bodies doing enough in this new era of instant gambling – not at the moment but they are beginning to catch up fast. And if by chance anyone is reading this and is in the throes of a gambling problem then please speak to someone. It is the only way you will win in the end.

THE DEATH OF A LEGEND: There are very few items covered in this column outside of Tralee sport but every so often something occurs that deserves inclusion.

And this week as I was putting this column together on Wednesday the death of Jimmy Magee was announced.

us unforgettable commentaries on a multitude of sports over a lifetimes work. He covered every Olympic Games since 1968 and every World Cup from 1966 on.

Amazingly he had to go to the UTV to commentate on an All Ireland final as Michael O’Hehir had that seat sown up in RTE. Jimmy was also known as the Memory Man for his encyclopaedic knowledge of sport. But it is as a commentator he will forever be remembered.

MINOR’S QUADRUPLE SUCCESS: There is no need to go back over the Kerry minors win last Sunday over Derry. Suffice to say it was an almost flawless performance.

And while David Clifford stole the show knowing him he will be the first to say that it was a team win.

From defence forward Kerry were in a different class and deserve all the plaudits they have been getting all week as do Peter Keane and his management and back room staff.

The question now is how many of these players can make the step up to senior football or through the u20’s for some of them. Bringing them through must be done properly. It would also be worth looking at as to how many of the players that were on the first of the four-in-a-row wins in 2013 have made the transition?

All the GAA clubs with notes in this column also send their congratulations to the Kerry Minors.

WALLACE OFF TO OFFALY: We send our best wishes to Stephen Wallace on his appointment as Offaly senior manager. Stephen has a very impressive CV including success with Ardfert and the Kerry Juniors.

So it is only right he takes the chance to move up to the top level.

PARNELL’S NEWS: Big Win for the 15’s: The Parnells 15’s camogie team enjoyed a good win in the Avondhu North Cork Divisional League defeating Kilworth. Kilworth is a very well organised club and their new hurling wall was enjoyed by the Tralee girls. These are the facilities that Parnells aspire to. It was a high scoring game with Parnells winning 6-07 to 5-02. The club is looking forward to the reverse fixtutre.

Under 16s into Final: North Kerry Under 16 B Championship

result: Tralee Parnells 4 - 11 Kilmoyley 1-13. Parnell’s now meet Abbeydorney in the Final. On the way to the decider Abbeydorney have defeated both Causeway and Kilmoyley, so a cracking final looks to be in store on next Saturday the 23rd.

Parnells Mention in Hurling Media: The club has a link on its Facebook page to an article by Anthony Daly where he has a number of things to say about the future prospects of Kerry hurling.

STACKS NEWS: The u6/8/10’s enjoyed their Sunday morning outing and another ‘football breakfast’ is planned for this Sunday while they will train as usual on Thursday evenings. The u8’s and u10’s are also in the John Mitchels Tournament this Saturday, September 23rd while the u9’s head to Cork on Sunday for the Canty Cup Competition at the St Finbarr’s Club.

UNDER 10 JOHN LYNCH TOURNAMENT: The John Lynch UNDER 10 Football Tournament will take place (ó 10am go 2.30pm) in Connolly Park on Sunday October 29th.

UNDER 12: On Sunday next, our U12 boys will travel to Dublin to take part in the Templeogue/Synge St Club UNDER 12 Tournament.

The Under 13 boys were unlucky v Ardfert in the Town League while the u16 B’s lost narrowly to John Mitchels. The club wishes the Tralee District u16 team all the best for this Saturday’s County semi-final.

The juveniles will be out in force to cheer on the seniors as they face West Kerry in the County Senior Championship quarter final on Saturday at 5.45pm at Austin Stack Park.

CAMOGIE NEWS: U11 Tralee Parnells: The older girls are looking forward to taking part in an U11 Munster blitz in Mallow on Sat Sep 23, and everyone will be out in Kilmoyley on Sat Sep 30.

Pairnealaigh Abu! U13 Tralee Parnells Camogie team have accepted an invitation to play in a Cork U13 Camogie blitz in Mallow on Saturday 30th September.

Cillard Camogie Club are hosting an U8& U10 blitz Saturday morning 30th September Venue Kilmoyley Gaa pitch at 11am.

The u12 A and B League finals are down for decision this weekend with Cillard taking on Causeway on Saturday in Ballyheigue at 12.30 while on Sunday the B Final sees Parnells facing Killarney in Firies at 6pm.

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER Lotto Winner: There was one winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 1,4,7 and 28. Pat McDonnell took the win of the e2800 jackpot. The next jackpot will be e1500.

There was a big win for Ballymac in the Senior Town League defeating John Mitchels 2-16 to 0-07.

The u14 Ladies returned to Division 3 of the North Kerry League going down narrowly to Moyvane but bounced back with wins over Dingle and Churchill.

The Blue team resumed competitive action last Tuesday evening away to Kerins O Rahillys in the Tralee Town league. The girls played some great football winning on a score line of 6-9 to 2-7. They then defeated Austin Stacks A in the Town League Division 1.

The Gold Team played 2 games in the Town League going down to St Pat’s and Austin Stacks B in the final where 2 goals were too much for the girls to come back from despite a great effort by all involved.

In the underage boys the u16’s went down to Churchill while the u14’s are in the Castleisland District A final this week against Knock/Brosna/Duagh. The u12 Blue and Gold teams are in their finals set for Friday night while the under-age academies continue as normal.

Ballymac GAA Golf Classic: The Gold Classic is on in Beaufort on October 7th with teams costing e160 per team and all support will be greatly appreciated.

KERINS O’RAHILLY’S NEWS: The club was eliminated from the Cahill Cup going down to Skelling Rangers on Friday night at the quarter final stage 4-14 to 1-03.

All attention now turns to the County Championship quarter final against East Kerry this Saturday in Austin Stacks Park at 4pm.

The u16’s defeated Blennerville 3-16 to 1-11and face Austin Stacks this Sunday. The underage training continues this week at the usual times.

Ladies Section: The u12 girls defeated Mitchels in the Town League Round 4 in gale force conditions. The u14’s are playing back games in the North Kerry and Town Leagues. The Minor Ladies continue training while there will also be u11 and u13 Development squad training.

Lotto: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 18,20, 24 and 30 with the next jackpot being e9,300.

ST PAT’S STORIES: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 3,7,27 and 28. The next jackpot will be e4,000.

The u8’s and 10’s will be competing in the annual John Mitchels Blitz which takes place this Saturday, the 23rd at 10.15 am. Teams are advised to be there for 10am. We wish our U8’s and 10’s the best of luck on Saturday.

The u12 Mixed team went down 3-10 to 5-16 to Na Gaeil while training for the u12’s, u14’s and u16’s goes ahead at the usual times this week.

FOUR WILL BECOME TWO: The four teams left in the Garvey’s County Senior Hurling championship will be reduced to two after this Sunday’s double header.

Up first at 2pm in Austin Stacks Park is the clash of Lixnaw and St Brendan’s with the former just about fancied to book their place in the decider. Three in a row chasing Kilmoyley will take on Ballyduff in the second game at 3.45pm and there will be few backing against them to reach another final.

KINGDOM WHEELBLASTERS HEAD TO THE DOGS: The Kingdom Wheelbalsters, the multi wheelchair sports club that trains in John Mitchels are heading to the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium on Saturday October 7th for a fundraising evening. The club is catering for ever increasing numbers and is now putting together a senior wheelchair basketball team. They will be delighted with any support you can give them. If you were planning a night at the dogs then why not go on October 7th and support this very good club.

ELAINE’S THE FIRST LADY: Elaine Burrows Dillane has become the first lady to swim the 16km Fenit /Blennerville / Fenit course in a time of 4 hours and 10 minutes. The swim was even more impressive as it was under marathon swimming rules – no wet suit (in water of 13c) and one cap and goggles.

The final round of the World Series Swim, the Gerald Walsh Memorial Swim was due to take place this week and following this the picture in the Swimmer of the Year competition will become clearer.

MCCARTHY WINS IN THE INTERNATIONAL RING: Young Tralee boxer Patrick McCarthy will have taken on Ukranian Pavlo Kovalenko or Russia’s Mukhammed Vakhaev on Thursday, September 21st for a place in the Last 4 of the European Junior Championships in Bulgaria.

On Tuesday he defeated Scotland’s Owen Paton to reach the last 8.

He has made his name in the Irish ring over the last few years and has two All Ireland titles to his name.

He is the National Champion and National Cadet Champion at 48kg’s and is just back from a week’s training with Irish coach Zaur Antia and has now moved onto the International stage.

Tralee Boxing Club’s Donie Jack Griffin said the whole club was delighted for Patrick. “This guy deserves his successes as his work ethic is second to none. We normally take August off but we kept the club open for him as he trained twice a day. He is a growing

lad and struggles to make the 48kg weight. In the run up to Tuesdays fight he had to lose a couple of kilos in a short time eating only a boiled egg and a slice of toast for the day and we were worried that it might affect his strength. But we should not have worried as he once again proved his talent and class and now is just one fight away from a European medal”.

15’S WIN AGAIN BUT 17’S GO DOWN: The Kerry u15 League of Ireland side clocked up their second win in a row and first on the road when the defeated Cobh Ramblers in St Coleman’s Park. Leo Gaxha increased his goal tally to 8 with a hat trick and is the League’s top scorer. Sean Kennedy scored his first goal since returning from injury while Sean McGrath was again on the score sheet to wrap up the win. They face the same opposition at Mouthawk Park this Saturday at 3.30pm.

The 17’s lost their last home game of their League campaign 3-0 to Bray and are away to Cork in Bishopstown at 2pm on Sunday.

They have drawn Limerick at home in the post League season Shield competition.

In the VIT HIT Kerry Schoolboys Girls League it was even age National Cup opening weekend.

Tralee Dynamos 12’s won 1-0 away in Murroe while the Park’s 12’s defeated Pallas at Christy League Park. The Park 14’s were too strong for Birdhill while in the 16’s the Park also progressed.

In the League there were wins for the Park 12 Premier side but narrow defeats for Dynamos in the 12 B and 14 Premier.

PARK LIFE: St Brendan’s Park Fc are excited to announce that we are looking to start up a GIRLS U12 team for the coming 2017/18 season. Girls born in 2007 2006 2005 would be eligible to play in this age group.

As we are a volunteer run club we would ask the parents of players to be heavily involved with a least one female coach. Any person who would have an interest in getting involved would also need to be Garda Vetted under the Children First Act (2015).

U-12 National Cup: Murroe 0 - 1 Dynamos. Pride of place this week goes to Billy Stacks charges who advanced to Rd 2 of the National Cup. Adam Evans was the scorer in a very tight and tense affair in a game played in very wet conditions.

Players to impress were Darragh Corridan, Shayne Stack and keeper Emmanuel Brankovic.

Dynamos now play away to Rathkeale in Rd 2.

WARRIORS GO DOWN TO DEMONS: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors lost out by just one basket away to UCC Demons on the opening weekend of the Men’s Basketball SuperLeague. Garvey’s had a nightmare second quarter and were down by 18 at the break but pulled it back to level only to lost out by 2 points in the end 79-77. Dusan Bogdanovic was the top scorer on 19 with Trae Pemberton on 14 and Goran Pantovic on 14. Warriors are at home to Dublin KUBS this Saturday night.

ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: The Éamonn McCarthy Memorial U16 Boys Tournament takes place on Saturday next the 23rd September. The tournament will be played at two venues. Group One will play in Moyderwell Primary School Gym and Group Two will play in Presentation Secondary School Gym. All Semi Finals, Plate Final and Cup Final will be played in Moyderwell. There will be shops at both venues where tea, coffee, sandwiches and refreshments will be available. All proceeds from the shop will go to St. Brendan’s chosen charity. There is a €2 charge at the door for everyone including players and team officials.

Group 1 at Moyderwell -St. Brendan’s, TK Bobcats, Maree and St Paul’s with Group 2 being St. Brendan’s 2, Tralee Imperials, St Mary’s and Cougars.

The Bruddy Burrows Memorial U12 Tournament will take place at Moyderwell on Saturday 30th September.
