WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... BIG TURNOUT AT NETWORK EVENT HOSTED IN BANK OF IRELAND I was delighted recently to have been approached by the (New!) branch manager in Bank of Ireland , Castle Street , Gerry Enright (a Listowel man !) to act as MC to their Networking event which was held during the week in their Branch . Headed up by BOI Sales Manager , Pat Carmody (another Listowel man !), the night had a fantastic turnout with well over 100 local business people in attendance . It ran pretty much like clockwork kicking off with the reception and registration from 6pm .(Lovely tasties from Der O Sullivan Deli.)This was very important as one of the Guest contributors , Heather O Sullivan from John Ross Jewellers , had put up a fantastic door prize of a Citizens watch , later won by John Edwards of Wild Water Adventures ... so you had to

register ! Needless to say , as MC on the night , I didn’t ! or rather Gerry told me I wasnt allowed to !...Think he had his eye on it ! A very interesting Q & A Session took place after a lovely presentation by a local community project ‘Inspired ,’

The contributors on the night were Seamus O Sullivan , Master Butcher and the main force behind a new loyalty program called B Local , Brid Mc Elligott , Vice President Research , Development & External affairs of Tralee ITT and Heather O Sullivan , from John Ross Jewellers . A lovely touch by Heather was John Ross goody bags ...again the early bird got the worm here as they were valuable currency later that evening . Then Pat Carmody pushed everyone a little out of their comfort zone with his active networking session, again taken like ducks to water here by canny Tralee business people .Finally an excellent Attending the Bank of Ireland Tralee In Business Digital insights Flash Networking Event in The Bank of Ireland Castle,Tralee on Wednesday evening, l-r: l-r: Kieran presentation Rutthledge (Chamber Alliance),James Kelleher ,Tim into the potential of Kelliher (Kellihers Toyota)and Tom Moore(BoI) Social Media

STACK STEPS AWAY FROM STACKS ! The refrain “Stephen Stack & the Rockie Boys are on our way to Glory “ has been sung with fervour and ardent belief by all Austin Stacks supporters since the Listowel native darkened our Connolly Park doors in 2013. The Senior Team’s exploits in the intervening years have cemented what will be an indelible and lifelong link based on friendship and admiration between all Rockies and the man from Fealeside. Reaching 13 competition finals since he became manager of our senior football team and winning 9 (including county and provincial honours), bears fervent testimony to his 16

coaching, man management and team building capabilities (amongst others). Such success has provided the club with a very firm bedrock upon which to develop many new facilities and best in class off –the-field structures and all on Rock St will remain forever indebted to Stephen for this. Imbued with a great leadership abilities, tremendous attention to detail and excellent assessment of people and situations, Stephen has brought tremendous qualities to our club and all players , supporters and administrators have reaped the rewards from working with , listening to and knowing him. Many people, whether players Friday 2nd December 2016

or managers, flash across the life of a club for a year or two and never stop to understand its ethos or culture. Stephen is the rare exception who expressed a genuine desire from the very first meeting to get involved, support and truly immerse himself in our club and that is why he will always be part of the Austin Stacks GAA Club’s history & folklore. Everyone at Austin Stacks GAA Club wish Stephen the very best in everything he does in the future and I , for one, am confident that many teams and businesses , far greater than our own, will benefit from his capabilities in years to come.

The 2017 Austin Stacks Senior Football management team will be put in place in the coming weeks. Liam Lynch Chairman Austin Stacks Hurling and Football Club

ANAM CARA KERRY PARENT EVENING Anam Cara, the organisation that supports bereaved parents, is hosting its monthly meeting for bereaved parents on Tuesday 13th of December from 19:30 to 21:00 in Recovery Haven, 5 Haig Terrace, Killerisk, Tralee, Co. Kerry.

The meeting offers parents a safe and comfortable setting where they can connect with other bereaved parents who will understand the depth of their loss and grief. A bereaved mother speaking about the benefits of Anam Cara meetings said: “Nothing is normal after the death of a child and it never will be again. Anam Cara helps. People may say that after, for example, two years you should just be able to pull up your socks and get on with it, but life is not like that when you lose a child. There is no timeline for getting over grief, it’s a continuous, daily thing. I would encourage any bereaved parents to come along. I know that anything that is unknown is often really scary, however, it’s important people know there is no pressure or onus on anyone to talk at the meetings, just being there can help.” Anam Cara CEO Sharon Vard stressed that this event is open to all bereaved parents “regardless of the age your child died, the circumstances of their death or whether the death was recent or not.” Anam Cara have also produced an Information Pack for bereaved parents containing seven booklets on topics such as A Dad’s Grief, Coping with Sudden Death and Supporting My Family. Likewise, a series of short videos with testimonies from bereaved parents who attend the Anam Cara groups can be viewed at anamcara.ie/videos. For more information or to order a free copy of the Information Pack, you can email info@anamcara.ie or ring their Information Line on 085 2888 888. 20

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... IT SYSTEM DEVELOPED BY TRALEE MAN’S IT CHARITY SAVES €50K PER ANNUM A new evaluation has shown that the eCASS client care and staff management system – developed by Irish IT charity Enclude, led by Kerryman Eamon Stack, in partnership with fellow charity Quality Matters – is generating savings in staff and management time for drug addiction services worth almost €50,000 per year on average or 285 working days per year. Together with average savings on top quality software licences of up to €18,000 per organisation, the evaluation shows that over €4.5 million annually in additional resourcing can be used on frontline addiction services. The findings of the evaluation – undertaken this summer amongst 45 addiction services – were presented by Enclude CEO, Eamon Stack (a native of Tralee), at an event to mark its 10th Anniversary. The event was also addressed by Senator Joan Freeman (founder of Pieta House), Dr Suzi Lyons (Health Research Board) and Ruairi McKiernan (Member of Council of State and Award-Winning Social Entrepreneur).

Enclude is a specialist awardwinning Irish technology charity – the largest of its kind in Europe – that works to bring technology donations and customised solutions to fellow Irish charities so that they can reduce what they are spending on IT and concentrate on maximising their impact. Mr Stack said that in addition to the time and cost savings, eCASS contributed significant improvements in terms of the quality of data available to manage interactions with clients as well as that available to meet funders’ reporting requirements. “eCASS has brought huge benefits as a way to record and report on actual contact time, outcomes and progression of clients from a service perspective feeding into a larger statistical gathering exercise providing timely and relevant information to funders and policy makers.” Other sectors are using similar customised case and staff management systems

developed by Enclude to improve their work. Miriam McKenna from Rural Transport provider, Flexibus Local link, explains how Enclude’s systems have significantly helped their work. “Our service has been transformed by the system Enclude developed for us. Flexibus can now reach more old people living alone in Louth, Meath and Fingal who have no car and no access to public transport or a lift from family or neighbours. We offer

a weekly transport to town, collect them from their door, help them in with the shopping and if they don’t answer the door when we call Enclude’s systems enable us to easily contact their next of kin.” At 10th Anniversary Event for IT charity Enclude founded by Kerryman, Eamon Stack were from left: Sylvester Murphy, Co-Founder and Deputy CEO Enclude and Eamon Stack, Co-Founder and CEO, Enclude.

MUNSTER CHAMPIONS DR CROKES 10/3 TO WIN 2ND ALL IRELAND TITLE Following their win over St Brigids in the Connacht Club SFC Final, Galway side Corofin are now 6/4 from 2/1 to win back the Andy Merrigan Cup and win a third All Ireland Club title. 2013/14 champions St Vincents, who defeated Longford champions Mullinalaghta in the Leinster Club SFC semi-finals, booked their place in the final against Offaly’s Rhode and are currently the 15/8 second favourites to go all the way. Munster champions Dr Crokes swept to a fourth Munster Senior Club title in six years after they defeated The Nire by 3-15 to 0-06 and are next in the betting at 10/3 to win a second All Ireland Club SFC title. 28

Derry side Slaughtneil landed the Ulster Club SFC title also on Sunday and are now 13/2 from 9/1 to lift the Andy Merrigan Cup for the first time. Offaly’s Rhode are 33/1 to go all the way. Liam Glynn, BoyleSports spokesperson said “Corofin have hardened into 6/4 after they won another Connacht Club SFC title on Sunday. However at present it’s Dr Crokes that remain the worst result in the book having been supported down from 6/1 since early October.” He added “St Vincents remain on course to win a seventh Leinster Club SFC and equal the record of seven titles held by Portlaoise. The Marino side have now only Offaly side Friday 2nd December 2016

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... “KEEP THE WOLVES FROM THE DOOR THIS CHRISTMAS” With Christmas being just around the corner, an exciting and wonderful time for families, but for many it can be a time of stress and financial strain. Chapter 23 Kerry Credit Unions has teamed up with independent financial advisory organisation MABS (Money Advice and Budgeting Service) to produce their “Keep the Wolves from the Door” a Christmas Survival Guide. Speaking to Chapter 23 Credit Unions Marketing Committee spokesperson Suzanne Ennis “Our keep the wolves from the door Christmas survival guide offers top tips for Christmas shopping from setting price limits on presents or Kris Kringle, to setting a realistic Christmas budget. It highlights the different source of credit available from moneylenders, personal loans, credit card debt and high interest store credit. In particular the guide shows the very high rates of interest

being charged by Moneylenders (Doorstep Credit). The guide shows exactly what savings can be made with a credit union loan versus a loan from a moneylender where you can pay up to €120/€140 less on a €500 loan with your credit union”. Suzanne added “As most credit unions accept social welfare, access to credit union loans is open to everyone so there is no reason for anyone to be paying moneylenders high interest rates. A lot of credit unions have signed up to the “It makes sense loan” scheme directly to combat moneylenders in their area and access credit union loans as an alternative source of credit with loan repayments coming from Social Welfare either directly or through the An Post Household Budget Scheme Speaking to Jerry Doyle Kerry MABS Co-Ordinator “MABS is delighted to be working with credit unions in Kerry on this

MABS is a government funded service but operate independently of government departments, the HSE, credit unions, banks, etc. This is a very important as we offer a free, independent and confidential service to those who approach us seeking financial and budgeting advice. Bexblah Beauty

This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens HELLO MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS! I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A FANTASTIC WEEK!

This week is ALL about nails, and if I’m talking about nails then I absolutely have to talk about House Of Glamour in Tralee. House Of Glamour is one of Tralee’s newest Salons and they do everything from hair to eyebrows and most importantly… NAILS. I’m a complete nail junkie, I feel there is nothing better than having your nails done. It just makes me feel more complete and put together. The girls at House Of Glamour are complete professionals and do absolutely amazing nails from plain colours to insane designs. I have been getting my nails done by one of the girls there for over three years now. As you probably know, I’m living in Dublin now… and you would think it would be absolutely no problem for me to find a good nail salon right? Well….. In September after my holiday I knew I wouldn’t be getting down to Tralee for a while so I booked an appointment in a salon right in the middle of Dublin that is VERY well known and I’ve seen a few Bloggers and Social Media people rave about this particular girl, with one of them going to her nearly every week! So I went, and was sat at a very tiny uncomfortable nail table and told the girl what I wanted… nothing crazy just black coffin shaped nails. First I was told she wouldn’t do coffin because that shape wouldn’t suit my hand(it’s also more time consuming). She did a full set of gels in 30 minutes. 30! I mean, anything amazing takes a bit of time and care right. So she flew threw the nails and yeah they were ok, some of the shapes were not exactly the same and they were a little lumpy but they were grand. Within a week one chipped and another broke and I never went back there again. They weren’t cheap either. In House Of Glamour the nail techs are SO precise. Making sure every nail is the same shape and size and that they

don’t look fake or lumpy. I have never seen such perfectionism or care taken anywhere else I have gotten nails done, they always have the newest colours and styles to choose from like chrome or foil or glass nails. They also last so long, my current set has been on three weeks and there isn’t one chip or sign of a nail coming loose and I go the the gym, work and do everything with my hands. And also, the salon is absolutely fab! All white and siler interior with comfortable chairs to wait in and sit in while you’re getting your nails/hair/brows whatever it may be, done. The salon truly lives up to its name. The salon also holds nail courses where you yourself can learn how to do nails from the best in the business! The owner has won awards and competitions and it’s easy to see why, she is absolutely unreal at her job. If you want your nails done for the Christmas season, I 100% recommend absolutely anyone to go to House Of Glamour. You can call 066 71-85488 to book an appointment or call in to the salon on Lower Castle Street to book an appointment, have a look at the salon or even buy a voucher for a fabulous Christmas present. Of course, like everything in life, there are lots of Salons and nail technicians to choose from and Tralee is no different. This is just the salon that I love to go to and that from my own personal experiences I 100% would recommend to EVERYONE. My credibility is very important to me so I would NEVER recommend a product or service that I don’t 100% believe in, EVER.

That’s it for this week! I hope you found this little list of tips helpful! If anyone wants to get in contact with me email me at ‘BexblahBeauty@gmail.com’ or message my Facebook page ‘Bexblah Beauty.

FITNESS!

HELLO EVERYONE! HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK, IT’S NOW DECEMBER… AND WE ALL KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS… CHRISTMAS!!!!

Yes, it’s Christmas Season. Yes, you might have 7 different nights out with 50 different people you haven’t seen in years, and yes you might have one(or 4) too many. It’s December it happens. What is very important, is that you have some sort of fitness balance and you don’t go into, “feck it I’ll start in January” mode from the first of December onwards. Here are my top tips to ensure that doesn’t happen… Plan your “big nights”: It’s Christmas afterall. You know you’re going to be going hard and do every single one of those 12 pubs, and Jesus, John is feckin home from Oz after two years next Tuesday so we’ll have to hit the pub then, and we all know it’s just plain rude not to go out St Stephen’s night. So, pick your “big nights”, and stick to them. During the day before them stay hydrated, eat a good breakfast and monitor what you have during the day better(1 pack of taytos instead of 10), and try to get some form of a workout in, 20 mins HIIT cardio, a walk with the dog, ANYTHING. Stay active: Do not, I repeat, Do NOT, walk out of the gym(leave behind your exercise regime) because “Feck it, it’s December now” and return on the second of JANUARY… well you can but 1) The gym will be packed the second of January and 2) You will not thank yourself, trust me. We all know it’s Christmas, and yes you don’t have to go to the gym for 2 hours everyday, no one is asking you to, BUT, that doesn’t mean you can lie on the couch with a can of roses for 4 weeks, get out, walk the dog, do a few squats, a workout video on YouTube, go ice skating, anything to keep active at least 3 times a

week. It’s not much and you will thank yourself in January when everyone is starting their new stupid lettuce diets and freaking out that bikini season(lol Ireland) is only a few months away!

HYDRATE: WATER WATER WATER. The least

you can do in between the 12 pubs and mulled wine is drink AT LEAST 2 litres of water a day. It will help your body, skin, and energy levels. Dehydration is pretty on nobody.

Don’t wait ‘til January: ‘Ah

too much one day, balance it out by watching what you eat the next day, it’s all about moderation. I hope you enjoyed my light hearted tips on how to not completely lose the run of yourself this December, but if you do… You better have a kick ass plan for January, next summer is going to be ALL about the fit toned gym bodies with amazing bums, just remember that before you eat that third helping of Christmas pudding!

sure Mary it’s the December now, too late anyway to start sure it’s practically January we’ll start then”... NO MARY. If you have that mindset you will 1) Eat yourself into a food baby, 2) Put off starting in January ‘til February(Sure isn’t it Women’s Christmas the 11th), 3) Put on lots on unwanted weight. I’m not saying you should skip out on Christmas dinner, but you can make on conscious effort to not eat a 20 pack box of cheese and onion taytos whilst dreaming of the tin of celebrations for dessert after downing a good two bottles of wine since yesterday. And I know it’s Christmas and I know it’s a time for fun, but that doesn’t mean you’ve to let yourself go like kid in a candy store. If you have a little

CHRISTMAS RECIPES The Christmas Ham!! Where would Christmas be without the glazed ham , a tradition here for ...(well basically forever) and why not it is a joy to behold !!!The smell as the glaze cooks, is for me one of the smells of Christmas , all the Christmas tips and recipes are on the blog www.traleeculinarygangsters.com Rich, dark and spicy sweet, this is a ham which should carry on bringing festive cheer long after the big day is over. Serves 8 • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 boneless gammon joint, about 2kg 3 tbsp molasses or black treacle 1 tsp cloves Pinch of mace 1 bay leaf 1 tsp allspice 1 tbsp black peppercorns Peel of ½ an orange, cut into thin strips Handful of cloves For the glaze: 5 tbsp dark brown sugar, plus extra to sprinkle 1½ tbsp mustard powder Finely grated zest of ½ orange 20ml ginger wine

1. Put the ham in a large stock pot, and cover with cold water. Add the molasses, spices and orange peel and bring slowly to a simmer, skimming off any scum. Simmer very gently for about an hour and a half, until the internal temperature of the ham reaches 68C. 2. Heat the oven to 220C. Lift the ham out of the liquid (which can be used to make delicious baked beans), allow to cool slightly, then carefully cut off the skin, leaving as much fat beneath as possible. Score this in a diamond pattern, and stud the intersections with cloves. Put the ham in a foil-lined roasting tray. 3. Mix together the glaze ingredients into a thick paste, and brush this all over the fat. Put into the hot oven for about 25 minutes, basting twice during this time, and adding a sprinkle more sugar as you go, until the glaze is caramelised and bubbling. Allow to cool completely before serving. If you follow the tradition of cooking a Christmas ham, how do you do yours? Is there any better way of using up the leftovers than a doorstop sandwich with a good dollop of mustard – and if you don’t do ham, tell us, what does keep you going until real life resumes in January Recipes by

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! THREE WOMEN DIE TOGETHER IN AN ACCIDENT AND GO TO HEAVEN...... When they get there, St. Peter says, “We only have one rule here in heaven: don’t step on the ducks!”

So they enter heaven, and sure enough, there are ducks all over the place. It is almost impossible not to step on a duck, and although they try their best to avoid them, the first woman accidentally steps on one. Along comes St. Peter with the ugliest man she ever saw. St. Peter chains them together and says, “Your punishment for stepping on a duck is to spend eternity chained to this ugly man!” The next day, the second woman accidentally steps on a duck and along comes St. Peter, who doesn’t miss a thing. With him is another extremely ugly man. He chains them together with the same admonishment as for the first woman. The third woman has observed all this and, not wanting to be chained for all eternity to an ugly man, is very, VERY careful where she steps. She manages to go months without stepping on any ducks, but one day St. Peter comes up to her with the most handsome man she has ever laid eyes on ... very tall, long eyelashes, muscular, and thin. St. Peter chains them together without saying a word. The happy woman says, “I wonder what I did to deserve being chained to you for all of eternity?” The guy says, “I don’t know about you, but I stepped on a duck!”

THERE ARE 3 SPIES THAT GET CAPTURED.

One spy is French, one is German and the other is Italian. Their captors come into the cell and grab the French spy and tie his hands behind a chair in the next room. They torture him for 2 hours before he answers all questions and gives up all of his secrets. The captors throw the French spy back into the cell and grab the German spy. They tie his hands behind the chair as well and torture him for 4 hours before he tells them what they want to know. They throw him back

into the cell and grab the Italian spy. They tie his hands behind the chair and begin torturing. 4 hours go by and the spy isn’t talking then 8 hours, then 16 and after 24 hours they give up and throw him back into the cell. The German and French spy are impressed and ask him how he managed to not talk. The Italian spy responds, “ I wanted to!, but I couldn’t move my hands!”.

MY WIFE HASN’T SAID A WORD TO ME IN 6 DAYS.

What’s even better is, she thinks it’s punishment

A ENGLISHMAN, A FRENCHMAN, A SPANIARD AND A GERMAN ARE ALL STANDING WATCHING A STREET PERFORMER JUGGLE. The juggler notices the four gentlemen have a very poor view, so he stands on a large wooden box and calls out “can you see me now?” “Yes” “Oui” “Si” “Ja”

THE FISHERMAN It was raining hard and a big puddle had formed in front of a pub. An old man stood beside the puddle holding a stick with a string on the end and jiggled it up and down in the water. A curious gentleman asked what he was doing. ‘Fishing,’ replied the old man. ‘Poor old fool’ thought the gentleman, so he invited the old man to have a drink in the pub. Feeling he should start some conversation while they were sipping their whisky, the gentleman asked, “And how many have you caught?’ ‘You’re the eighth’.

TORQUING CARS! TOYOTA EXPECT NEW C-HR CROSSOVER TO BE A BIG HIT !

It is a sign of just how many people are buying compact crossovers these days that Toyota are prepared to predict they will sell 3,000 of their new C-HR next year. That’s a lot of cars. It is a further sign of who is buying these motors that they expect such a broad spectrum of people - those downsizing, young couples, singles and families - to drive one off the forecourt in the course of 2017. Prices start at €26,895 for the entry level 1.2T Luna petrol C-HR and from €29,350 for the 1.8 hybrid. Some details on the powertains: 1.2T petrol, 116bhp, 5.9l/100km 135g/km (€280 tax); 1.8 Hybrid, 122bhp, 3.8 l/100km, 86g/km (€180 tax). And the prices are: 1.2T Luna €26,895, Luna Sport €29,950, Sol €30,950; 1.8 hybrid Luna €29,350, Luna Sport €31,950, Sol €32,950. The car looks compact but, at 4.35m, it is longer than the Nissan Juke (4.14m) and just short of the Qashqai’s 4.38mm. There is a 377 litre boot. Standard spec includes adaptive cruise control, dual auto air con, Toyota Safety Sense, 17ins alloys, 4.2ins TFT multi-info display, Toyota Touch 2 with rear view monitor, fog lamps, rain sensors. Luna Sport adds: 18ins alloys, bi-tone roof, seat heater, auto retractable mirrors. Sol adds: partial leather trim, S-IPA, Navi.(Indo Motoring)

LAMBORGHINI WORTH £200,000 SEIZED BY POLICE AFTER DRIVER CAUGHT USING MOBILE PHONE

A Lamborghini worth around £200,000 has been seized from a driver after he was allegedly caught using his mobile phone behind the wheel. Met Police officers stopped the 42-year-old man as he drove the luxury Italian sports car, which had German number plates, along Queens Road in central Hendon, north London. The driver was unable to produce any proof of holding a full driving licence or any documentation in relation to the right-hand drive supercar or its insurance. The driver said he did not hold a UK driving licence, but had a German licence back in Germany, said police. Officers from the Met’s Roads and Transporting Policing Command spotted the high-performance Lamborghini on Wednesday afternoon. They were on patrol as part of the National Police Chief’s Council (NPCC) weeklong crackdown on drivers illegally using mobile phones. Police seized the supercar and the driver was reported for the offences of driving while using a mobile phone, driving not in accordance with a licence and driving with no insurance.

JAGUAR’S FIRST EVER I-PACE ELECTRIC CAR WILL GET YOU FROM LONDON TO MANCHESTER ON A SINGLE CHARGE

Jaguar has unveiled the I-Pace, its first ever electric car with a claimed range of about 220-miles on a single charge. The I-Pace was revealed at the LA Motor show, and is the follow-up to Jaguar’s popular first SUV, the F-Pace . Jaguar plans to put the concept car into production next year, before hitting the roads in 2018. Despite the I-Pace’s size, comfort and all-wheel drive, the all-electric SUV will have a claimed range of about 220-miles - which means it should get you from London to Manchester on a single charge his, Jaguar claims, should mean the average commuting driver only needs to charge it once a week with a 90-minute boost giving 80% battery, or 100% in around two hours. Its 700Nm of instant torque means it’s also powerful, going from 0-60mph in around four seconds. The car features “All Surface Progress Control and Adaptive Surface Response” for ultimate grip - so no matter the weather you just put your foot down and the car should take care of the rest. For in-car information, there’s a full-colour head-up display, as well as a 12-inch touchscreen, a secondary 5.5-inch screen controlled by physical dials, and a 12-inch HD virtual instruments cluster behind the wheel. Despite all that information Jaguar says its “human machine interface” will make interactions a doddle. Thanks to front and rear motors pushing out 400PS without taking up the room of a fuel-powered engine, the five-seater SUV is more spacious than similar sized non-electric SUVs, says Jaguar. Pricing and the exact release dates have not been announced yet, but with the Jaguar F-Pace starting at around £35,000 there is a chance the I-Pace may actually be affordable too - for a Jag. We’ll just have to wait until 2018 to drive one on the roads. 54

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR AN RIOCHT’S SHONA AND LAURA CLASS IN CROSS COUNTRY: The National Sports Campus in Abbotstown is fast becoming the centre of sport in Ireland. The latest big event to be held there was the Irish Life Health National Cross-Country Championships on the purpose built 8000m course. And what a race it proved to be for Tralee’s An Riocht club with its athletes taking 1st and 4th. Shona Heaslip carries a name probably better known in Tralee for singing but the athlete has been making a big name for herself over the last few years. And at the weekend all her hard work clicked into place as she took gold in 28.13 ahead of Irish Olympians Kerry O’Flaherty (Newcastle) and Ciara Mageean from UCD who was tipped to win the race. Laura Crowe is another Kerry athlete that has been making waves on the national and international stage and she took 4th to help An Riocht to a team bronze. Iveragh AC’s Grace Lynch and Maria McCarthy of Farranfore Maine Valley were the others on the team. And to make it even sweeter for all involved Heaslip and Crowe both have now made the Irish team for the European Cross-Country Championships in Italy later this month. TRALEE BOXING CLUB PUNCHES AT ITS WEIGHTS AND ABOVE: Like the many other sports clubs in the town the Tralee Boxing Club is doing great work with its underage and senior members. It gives those with a love of the ‘noble art’ a place to learn, train and enjoy their sport. The club has big plans over the coming year or two to develop a state of the art club and should get all the support possible to do that. Last weekend a big crowd turned out to see boxers from all over Munster came to Tralee for an 18 bout multi-club tournament. The host clubs Mike McCarthy from the host club being named Boxer of the Tournament as he defeated Matus Karanavicius of Kanturk in the B4 44kg category. Coach at the club Donie Griffin said the club was delighted the way the night went. “We got great support from clubs like Our Lady of Lourdes and Corpus Christi as well as our fellow Kerry clubs. We are thankful to all the boxers, coaches and referees who travelled from Limerick, Cork and from all over the county. This tournament is a great indicator for the Munster Championships next February and our boxers are looking forward to a great New Year.” Other winners from Tralee included Ellen Burke and Mary McDonagh, both boxing in the Girls 10 year’s 33kg fights. John Murray, Christopher Mangan, Jonathan McCarthy and Patrick McCarthy of Tralee were also winners as were Ballyduff Boxing Clubs Jordan Goggin and Barry O’Connor. Cashenvale’s BC’s winners on the night were Donnacha Sayers and Michael Downey. The Trojan Boxing club had 3 boxers in action.

Dylan Uljee was making his debut in the ring and put up a good performance against a taller opponent with a longer reach and went down on a split decision. John Ward fight was tight until the end against Mike Carmody from Corpus Christi and the Cork fighter won on a split decision. Ray Collins was their third boxer in action and he took on Tralee’s Richard McCarthy. All 3 rounds were close with Ray winning the 1st round, losing the 2nd but he came back hard in the third to take the fight. Sliabh Luachra’s Kieran Quinlan took the Senior Heavyweight fight beating Cashenvale’s Kevin Cronin. For boxing fans who want to see more action Trojan Boxing Club are hosting a show in Tomasins, Lisselton on Saturday December 10th with the doors opening at 7pm and the first fight in the ring at 7.30pm with 15 to 20 bouts taking place on the night. TWO NIGHTS RACING THIS WEEKEND: There will be two nights racing this weekend at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium with the first races off just before 7pm. On Friday night there is a top class programme with a fundraiser for Boherbue National School with their A7 525 yards buster final their feature race. Also on during a busy night are the final of the Red Mills unraced bitch stake, the semi-finals of the Greyhound and Pet World A2 525 yards and the first rounds of the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium Supporters Club Kingdom Derby. On Saturday night the highlights are the semi-finals of the County Kerry Coursing A6 Buster Stake. LIMERIK’S COURSING CUP COME TO BALLYDUFF: At the Rathkeale Coursing meeting the Limerick Cup was won by Tellmemorelies for trainer James Allen in Ballyduff. Russmur Event won the Oaks Trial Stake while the Derby Trial Stake went to Blades of Fire. Moat Matilda collected the points in the All Age Bitch Stake and Slippy Leo was the winner of the Mike Meehan Stake. The O’Carroll Cup /O’Connor Cup are the features as the action heads to Lixnaw this weekend with the meeting getting underway at 11am this Friday, December 2nd. COOPERS HAT-TRICK: Not Colm Cooper or anything to do with the Crokes!! This is Bryan Cooper who put his recent injury bad luck behind him with a hat trick of winners at Navan on Sunday. The three winners were part of a Gordon Elliott six-timer with two of the other winners ridden by Dingle’s Jack Kennedy, also back in the winning enclosure after injury. If you were following Elliott and backed his 6 winners you would have made e41,276 for e1 – dreams are made of this!! WARRIORS IN 1ST CLASS WIN OVER UCD: TRALEE WARRIORS 79-74 UCD MARIAN: Tralee coach Mark Bernsen said that this was

Friday 2nd December 2016

his sides biggest win of year as they saw one of the sides that they hope to be challenging for honours with at the end of the season. But for long periods it looked touch and go as to whether the Warriors could keep their unbeaten home record. They scored the first basket of the game but didn’t lead again until the last 3 minutes of the third quarter. At various stages the home side found themselves 5, 6, 8 and 10 points behind. However one of the many qualities Bernsen has instilled in this squad is to battle hard in times of adversity and they certainly stood up at both ends. Warriors had given up 20 points in the first quarter and were 5 behind. By half time it was 30-38 but by the end of the third quarter the gap was down to 3 points 49-52. Pantovic, Bogdanovic, Donaghy, Leonard and Pemberton were working hard as were the players like Darren and Fergal O’Sullivan off the bench and some big steals, three pointers and dunks got the sell -out crowd on their on their feet and in reality were the 6th man. In the 4th quarter once the Warriors got in front they quickly opened a gap saw off a tough challenge to take a very good win. There only disappointing thing from the Warriors point of view was their poor percentage from the free throw line. But they are proving that while they might the new boys in the SuperLeague they are certainly in it to win it. Top Scorers for Warriors: Trae Pemberton 28, Goran Pantovic 11, Ryan Leonard 11, Kieran Donaghy 10. Warriors are away to Griffith Swords Thunder, second in the table to Warriors 4th, on Sunday at 3pm. ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL CLUB: In the Ladies Division 2 of the County League St Brendan’s won 47-39 away at St Bridget’s. The Tralee side started the brightest and were 4 points up at the end of the opening quarter. However things tightened up in the second period and at the break there was only a point between the sides 23-22. St Brendan’s upped the intensity at both end and led by 6 going into the final quarter and holding on to win. Top scorers: Linda Raymond 20pts, Claire O’Sullivan 11pts, Katie Costello 5pts, Laura Griffin 5pts, Roisin O’Shea 4pts, Elaine Bailey 2pts, Aoife Daly, Jillian Kerins, Ariane Finnegan, Eimear Quaid. In other results the Boys u14’s were beaten in Division 3 going down 41-23 to TK Vixens. KERRY TEAMS OUT: There was no luck for St Brendan’s Tralee who lost out in the Hula Hoops Men’s National Intermediate Cup going down 36-69 to Ballincollig. In the Men’s u18 National Cup Tralee Imperials went down 81-48 to BFG Neptune. OFF SIDE – SOCCER NEWS: KDL Transfer Window: The winter transfer window is now open until January 31st with official transfer forms needing to be used which are on the FAI website. Also any players who played with the Kerry u17 side in the SSE Airtricity League and are returning to clubs are reminded that they are cup-tied from the FAI Junior Cup, Munster Junior Cup and Munster Youths Cup. These players cannot play in these competitions this season. Kerry win well in the Oscar Traynor 1-0: That probably seems like a confusing headline but in fact Kerry’s 1-0 win over the Desmond League could and probably have been much easier. The only goal came in the 28th minute when Wayne Sparling latched onto a goalkeeping mistake and rolled the ball into an empty net. But in truth both goal keepers were the heroes with Kerry’s David Hennessy making a number of very good saves including a vital double save from Declan Nash in the last minute. At the other end the

SPONSORED BY RON CONSTRUCTION, BUILDING & CARPENTRY SERVICES Desmond League’s Sean Lynch was also inspired bar the one mistake to make this an exciting game. However 1-0 was enough for Kerry and it sets them up for an away game to West Cork where at least a point will see Kerry progress to the knockout stages. The Kerry Youth put in a good performance away to Limerick DL despite going down 1-0. However the Youths is a 3 team group with 2 to qualify and if Kerry can beat Clare at Mounthawk Park in the New Year they will go through. And with the players form the u17’s available things are looking good for Kerry. Greyhound Bar Cup First Round Draw: The most coveted Cup in Kerry soccer is the Greyhound Bar with Aidan O’Connor being one of the League’s longest sponsors. The first round draw took place in the Greyhound Bar this week and for the town’s clubs Tralee Celtic are away to Ballyhar, Strand Road are at home to Mastergeeha and Windmill United go to Camp and CSKA Tralee travel to CS Abbeydorney while Mitchels Avenue are at QPR. The KDL Premier Division teams come in at a later round. DAMIEN LOCKS DOWN YOUTHS JOB: Tralee’s Damien Locke will be one of the youngest managers in the League of Ireland next season as he has been named manager of Wexford Youths. The former Tralee Celtic and Dynamos player has been building up some very valuable experience as video analyst for the Irish team and as coach to the u18 men’s and u19’s women’s squads as well as working in Carlow IT and with Wexford. All Kerry soccer fans wish him well and we will all be keeping an eye on Wexford Youths results next season. ST BRENDAN’S PARK NEWS: There was great joy in the club when the 12’s team qualified for the Last 32 of the National Cup and also for the inaugural Regional Finals. The boys had to do it the hard way winning away at Aisling Annacotty in Limerick and coming from a goal down. Dara Cunnane got both the Park’s goals either side of half time. Club merchandise is now available in the Club Shop. The shop is open every Saturday from 10.30am until 2pm and there are some nice ideas for Christmas presents. TRALEE BOYS SECURE KERRY WIN: The Kerry u15’s side made it two wins from two in the Subway Inter League Championship defeating Clare 2-1. The Park’s Sean McGrath scored the first and Tralee Dynamos Leo Gaxha scored a cracking late winner. Team of the Week: Congratulations to Jack Twamley, St Brendan’s Park and Sean Doolan Tralee Dynamos who were selected on the Kerry Schoolboys Girls Team of the Week. AWARDS TIME AT THE IT: This is the time of for Awards and the IT Tralee presented a number of its students with awards for their prowess in their chosen sports. Monika Dukarsa, Fionan Mackessy, David Clifford and Shauna Kelly all had great years in their chosen fields. IT President Dr. Oliver Murphy made the presentations at the Rose Hotel to Kerry minor footballers David Clifford and Fionan Mackessy and rowers Monika and Shanuna. The college said they were acknowledging their students, who ranged from First Years to Masters for their

high level of achievements in the sporting world. THREE TRALEE TRIATHLON CLUB MEMBERS HONOURED: The Tralee Triathlon club is going from strength to strength and this was acknowledged on the national stage when three of its members were honoured at the Triathlon Ireland Awards. Joanne Allman from Ballymac, the race director for the Tri Kingdom Come Triathlon, won the Volunteer of the Year Award which were presented at the Marker Hotel in Dublin. Cillian Tierney won two awards on the night for his success during the season. The 18 year old took second place in the Super Series 2016 and third in the National Championships Standard Distance. To complete a very good season Tierney was second in the National Duathlon Championships. Seamus Hoare was the third triathlete honoured and his win in his age category in the National Series sees him qualify for the World Championships in Rotterdam next year. IN THE SQUARE – THE GAA NEWS: The big news this week was the appointment of Maurice Fitzgerald as the new Kerry selector. He was ratified at the Kerry County Committee Meeting replacing Diarmuid Murphy. He is the ideal candidate and his experience in training and in the dressing room will certainly be a big addition to Kerry and to Eamonn Fitzmaurice. Also at the meeting tributes were paid to County Board Chairperson Patrick O’Sullivan who was stepping down after 18 years of service which has seen him serve a number of different functions. His fundraising work and his spearheading of the development of the new facilities were highly praises. Somehow I don’t think this is Patrick last involvement in GAA boardroom activities. STACKS STORIES: The youngest players in the club, the under 6’s, 8’s and 10’s are all set for their Awards Presentation on Sunday next December 11th in the clubhouse. This will also be the day when the 2017 Club Calendar is launched. The u12’s are continue their winter workouts on the basketball court. All are welcome at the Moyderwell Gym on Thursdays from 6pm. Tralee CBS went down to St Brendan’s Killarney in the newly renamed Brother Taft Cup. In the Corn Ui Mhuiri Group 1 Tralee CBS drew with St Francis College Rochestown 1-16 to 3-10 while Mercy Mounthawk went down to Colaiste Chriost Ri. Scor na nOg: Best wishes to all the Kerry competitors who are performing in the Munster semi-final of Scor na nOg in Cashel next Sunday, December 11th. PARNELLS NEWS: Tralee Park Run and Junior Run: Parnells are encouraging all their members to take part in the weekly Tralee run. The inaugural Junior Park Run takes place on Sunday December 4th at 9.30am in the Tralee Town Park. This is a 2k run for children aged 4 to 14 and those registered for the Saturday’s Park Run don’t need to register again.

night in O’Dwyer’s Bar. Two for the Show: There are still some tickets left for tonight’s fundraising ‘Two for the Show’ show with Mark Leen and Shaun O’Dowd in Ballingarry House. Support the Rock Street Post Office: This is obviously a busy time for those using Post Offices and all members are asked to support the Rock Street Post Office as much as possible. Juvenile AGM: The Juvenile AGM has been rescheduled for the weekend of December 9th. This is where the New Year’s activities are planned so all interested parties are invited to attend. Senior AGM: The Senior AGM is on December 11th at 3pm in the Community Rooms and nominations can be given to Conor Culloo. CAMOGIE AGM: The Kerry Camogie County Board AGM will take place this Sunday, December 4th in Kerin’s O’Rahillys Clubhouse at 7.30pm. All nominations are due in by this Friday night. New members are as always welcome. THE OVAL BALL: In Munster J-Division 2 Tralee’s woes continued as they went down to Presentation. Jack Quliter and Sean Downing touched down for Tralee, while Darragh O’Neill had a good day kicking two conversations and a penalty but it was not enough to get them any points. Tralee welcome Ballincollig in their next game – which are all becoming must win games now. RALLY TO KILLARNEY: Rally competitors and fans will be heading to Killarney this weekend for the 20th KDMC Historic Rally. There is a ceremonial start at 7pm on Main Street on Friday night with the real action getting underway at Molls Gap at 8pm. WALK THE LINE PART 5: That sounds like a Johnny Cash song and possibly someone will sing it this Sunday, December 4th. This is when the Walk the Line walk of the Tralee to Fenit Greenway takes place- or at least as much of it as can be walked. The meeting place is St Brendan’s Church at 2.15pm for a 2.30pm start. Please come along and support this initiative to get the Greenway developed from Mounthawk to Fenit. ON THE GREENS: Waterville completed the double over Tralee Golf Club in the Kingdom Challenge Shield Intermediate final. The South Kerry club had built up a big lead in the first leg and could not be caught. At the Tralee club Paddy O’Donoghue was the winner of the Sunday competition followed by Denis Reen and David Nolan Tighe in third. In the Ladies section the Christmas Hamper Round 3 went to Emma Morrissey with Angela Deenihan taking 2nd.

ST PAT’S NOTES: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 6,15,20 and 24 and the next jackpot will be e2,700 with the draw this Sunday
