Our Autumn collection showcases timeless, consciously-made pieces and traditionally grown food to fill your home with meaning, and feed your body with hope. Choose mindful pieces which express you. Be bold with colour-clashing.

MEET OUR PRODUCERS

Ngwenya Glass This unique story unfolded in 1979. A glass blowing factory called Ngwenya Glass was set up as a Swedish Aid Project, employing and training eSwatinis in the age-old art of glass blowing.

IN MY PREVIOUS LIFE I WAS A JAM JAR

These days, Ngwenya Glass employs over 60 skilled glass blowers to create original pieces of art and train apprentices. Ngwenya Glass isn’t only an inspiring success story – it’s an environmentalist’s dream.

The products are all crafted from 100% recycled glass. Waste glass is collected by gogos (South African term for grandmother), cleaned and separated into colours. Then it’s ground, melted, blown, cooled, cut, polished, quality checked and packaged. It takes up to 13 people to make just one wine glass.

‘Glass can be recycled over and over again without compromising quality.’

Not satisfied with recycling glass, Ngwenya have implemented more green practices like making bricks from recycled newspaper and sand from ground glass. Oil is recycled to fire the furnaces and rain water is collected and used to wash and clean the products.

‘The blower has only a few minutes to work the glass. It takes over a year to become a skilful glass blower.’

MEET OUR PRODUCERS

Gone Rural

Since its beginnings in the 1970s, Gone Rural has blossomed from a local women’s empowerment project to a global leader in handicraft and design, using creativity and innovation to ignite social change. Gone Rural now engages over 780 women artisans, who each play an equal part in changing the world through fair trade, and continuing the craft traditions of eSwatini (formally known as Swaziland).

These women weave their innovative homewares from their homes.

RAW

Lutindzi grass is an indigenous wild mountain grass. Every year, it’s harvested sustainably by over 400 rural women, who ensure they pick above the root so the grass will grow back naturally.

CLEANED & DYED

S U S TA I N A B L E I N C O M E C R E A T E S S O C I A L C H A N G E They are talented artisans, breadwinners, and businesswomen. The Gone Rural organisation provides a fair and sustainable income to weavers in 13 groups and 52 communities throughout eSwatini. Many of the groups are multi-generational, with intricate weaving skills passed down from grandmother to mother, mother to daughter.

This one-of-a-kind sunburst wall mirror is handcrafted by traditional metal-workers in Moradabad, India, a region made famous by its long tradition of brass and metalworking. Indian artisans have been crafting with metal since 3000 BC. This wall mirror is designed to shine like gold when mounted on a wall. Lean in close to see the surface glisten. Phoenician Glass

These pieces of mouth blown glass are handmade with recycled glass by artisans at one of only two remaining glass-blowing workshops left in Hebron, Palestine.

The creation of Hebron glass dates back to the 14th century. It’s a tradition that’s been passed down for generations along the West Bank, with glassworkers learning the art of Phoenician glass from revered master craftsmen.

Each piece has its own personality, marble pattern, and unique seascape of swirling blues or rolling mists. It’s taken this team of artisans over 30 years to perfect these colour combinations, how incredible is that?

From collaborating with small-scale farmers to capture authentic tea flavours with an innovative new process – our new range is the result of over 30 years of fair trade tea-making.

WHO GROWS OUR TEA? Our fair trade tea is picked by hand by traditional small-scale farmers such as Sukambizi, a Fairtrade certified group on the slopes of Mount Mulanje in Malawi.

The growers hand-pick only the youngest two leaves and a bud, whereas cheaper teas elsewhere often include dried stalks and old leaves too.

WHERE IN THE WORLD? Traidcraft have established meaningful relationships with producers and suppliers from all around the world, some of which we’ve been working with since the very beginning, almost 40 years ago! We’ve also formed relationships with new suppliers and producers over the years, bringing an ever-increasing range of products to homes around the UK. This is a list of the fair trade suppliers we’ve collaborated with to curate our range of handcrafted collectables and incredible edibles this season.

BANGLADESH AARONG Aarong is a fair trade organisation created a few decades ago by BRAC (NGO) to focus on providing market access and business mentoring for disadvantaged artisans in Bangladesh.

CORR - THE JUTE WORKS

Prokritee is a fair trade organisation in Bangladesh, supporting over 1,500 artisans and women from disadvantaged rural areas to craft beautiful things from entirely natural or recycled materials.

SAIDPUR ENTERPRISES This fair trade enterprise creates ethical and eco-friendly products that support women and their families in rural communities in Saidpur, Bangladesh, where there are few opportunities for widows or women household leaders to earn a livelihood.

Many thousands of families in Bangladesh rely on jute for a steady income. CORR — The Jute Works was set up in 1973 as a charitable trust, providing women weavers with the training and skills needed to make locally-grown jute products in the safety and comfort of their own homes.

Swajan Crafts works with over 850 artisans specialising in traditional Bangladeshi craft techniques such as appliqué, paper craft, embroidery, and mirror work. Workshops are located in rural and semi-rural areas, and the majority of artisans are women, who often provide the primary source of income for their family.

CALYPSO Calypso is a micro-enterprise run from the founder’s home in Chile, and employs artisans from over 30 local families to craft pieces of original glass artwork. The artists get a fair wage and the opportunity to have their own share of a vibrant and dynamic studio.

Swazi Candles began in an old cowshed in the mountains of eSwatini in 1981, set up by two South African art graduates and a designer. All artisans are involved in decision-making, the profit is shared, and employees benefit from health care, pension funds, transport allowance, educational loans, and access to eSwatini Fair Trade training programmes.

GONE RURAL

Zoggs is now a close-knit team of 13 Swazi women based in the south of eSwatini. Each woman supports her family with her income, and as a group have perfected their own unique papier-mâché technique.

During the 1970s, Gone Rural’s founder Jenny Thorne began setting up small income-generation projects with local women, and it wasn’t long before her eyes wandered up to the eSwatini mountains, where women were already weaving with the beautiful Lutindzi grass growing there.

EZWATINI (Sauces) NGWENYA GLASS In 1979, a glassblowing factory called Swazi Glass Craft (trading as Ngwenya Glass) was set up as a Swedish Aid Project, employing and training locals in the age-old art of glassblowing.

These days, Ngwenya employs over 60 skilled glassblowers to create original art from recycled glass.

Set up in 1979, Aravali currently supports the work of close to 150 artisans, most of which are men working in block-printing studios around Jaipur. Aravali take great care to build lasting, stable relationships with craftspeople, and have nurtured many such partnerships for over 10 years .

ASHA HANDICRAFTS Asha is split into two divisions; one which promotes traditional handicrafts, and the other which develops local welfare and learning programmes for artisans based in small workshops throughout India.

They live by the premise that ‘a single action is worth more than a thousand intentions’.

CO-OPTEX INTERNATIONAL Co-optex was established in 1935, and holds close to its heart a long and rich tradition in handloom history, stretching back at least 80 years in Tamil Nadu.

CRAFT RESOURCE CENTRE (CRC) Craft Resource Center (CRC Exports Private Limited) helps informal artisan groups to grow into self-sustaining businesses, providing raw materials, production support, and additional training.

EQUITABLE MARKETING ORGANISATION (EMA) Based in Kolkata, EMA supports a wide range of traditional craftspeople, offering free healthy meals during the working day, free travel costs, and textbooks for the artisans’ children.

FTAK (Cashews, Coconut Oil & Spices) MANJEEN HANDICRAFTS Manjeen Handicrafts guarantees that marginalised artisans in India receive fair pay for their craft, and a brighter and better future for their families.

INDONESIA PEKERTI Formed in Jakarta in 1975, Pekerti provides over 50 artisan groups across the archipelago with marketing support for their handicrafts.

Pekerti is also a social development organisation, offering training to artisans and investing funds in local community projects.

Amongst the rich metal-working and handmade heritage of Moradabad, Noah’s Ark was set up in 2000 to advocate the value of India’s skilled artisans, from paper-crafters and painters to wood-carvers and brass-workers.

ST MARY’S St. Mary’s Mahila Shikshan Kendra, is a non-profit Women’s Handicraft Organization. Set up in Ahmedabad in 1970 and run by Dominican Sisters committed to the development of the economically and socially marginalised women in the Gomtipur slum area of Ahmedabad. Using their indigenous craftsmanship, the women produce high quality mirror work embroidery in traditional designs and colours.

TARA PROJECTS In the early 1970s, in the hustle-bustle of Delhi, Tara Projects was set up to support isolated home-based artisans and promote their crafts around the world. Today, Tara supports artisan communities with vocational training, affordable healthcare, medical insurance, and education centres, in addition to running environmental protection initiatives.

PA R A G U A Y MANDUVIRA (Sugar) OTISA (Sugar) KTS is a fair trade organisation established in 1983 which works with a cast of untouchable people (street sweepers) that have limited access to education and employment opportunities in Nepalese society.

In addition to the income generation activities around handmade carpets, knitwear and furniture; KTS provides scholarships to the artisan children, vocational training and a children day care center.

MAHAGUTHI Mahaguthi is a non-profit fair trade organisation that markets the handicrafts of more than 1,000 Nepali artisans based in over 150 workshops. Most of the artisans are from remote and mountainous areas, and around 85% are women who practise crafts in their own home.

SALAY HANDMADE PRODUCTS INDUSTRIES INC (SHAPII) Behold the battle cry of Salay – ‘Yes, the Filipino Can!’ Salay was set up in 1987 and works to conserve Filipino crafts, put the artisans first, training young people, and live by fair trade principles.

RWANDA In 1986, a gathering of likeminded Peruvians were moved by the traditional skills they saw demonstrated by the skilled hands of those in poor communities. They set up ALLPA to give direct support to artisans and become an ambassador of the fair trade movement.

Around 20 years ago, Simon Hawthorne and Paul Morley visited Uttar Pradesh, and decided to show the world that the Dalit people have huge potential for creativity. Ever since, the organisation has provided a stable income for Dalit people, and worked in partnership with Life Association to build schools and children’s homes in Dalit communities across India.

Mai Handicrafts began as a way to share training and ideas with women, religious and ethnic minorities in Southern Vietnam, and since then it’s become the main source of empowerment and self-reliance to disadvantaged (and extremely skilled) local women.
