Friends, The start of June 2022 can only mean one thing… it’s the Jubilee Bank Holiday! A four day stretch of celebrations; street parties, fetes, afternoon teas and garden soirees. This really is a moment in time, that we’ll look back on over our lives, remembering where we were, who we were with and how we celebrated.
If you’re lucky enough to be seeing friends and family this Bank Holiday weekend, why not bake them a special fair trade Jubilee cake (see page 10 for recipe)? We assure you that this will be gratefully received by friends and family, especially when you tell them about the impact the fair trade ingredients have on farmers and producers around the world.

Spotlight on Traidcraft Dark Chocolate Climate change is real, and it’s happening now. Smallholder farmers in Tunisia are among those who are suffering most with the effects of climate change, but who contribute least to its acceleration. For these Tunisian farmers, climate change means long periods of drought; the fruits of their date palms are becoming increasingly dry. To minimize waste and adapt to the effects of the climate crisis, smallholder farmers of Beni Ghreb in Tunisia, are grinding their dates into a sweet powder – which has been used to naturally sweeten this chocolate bar!

Traidcraft Rice As part of our commitment to the environment, we’re always looking for ways to lower our carbon output as a company. A recent switch in packaging has seen a huge reduction in the plastic used in our packaging; for example, a switch to longer, thinner bags to house our rice reduces the amount of plastic in each bag by 75%. Make sure to let your customers know how much plastic they’re saving!

A transparent update: You will notice that our charge for additional catalogues has gone up from 10p, to 50p. In true, 100% transparent Traidcraft style, we wanted to let you know why this is. In recent months, the costs for producing, printing and mailing our catalogue have shot up. Now, each single catalogue works out at 83p to print and mail. This is just the print cost. By the time we've added mail mark, machine set up, inkjet, the name and address on, bagged for mail, and added the delivery charge, the true cost is £1.45 each.

Fair Trade Jubilee Cake
YOU WILL NEED
Perfect for special occasions, this fair trade Jubilee fruit cake promises to be royally well-received!
INGREDIENTS •
1 1/2 cups Tropical Wholefoods Traditional Mixed Dried Fruit
•
2 cups self-raising flour
•
3 oz butter
•
1 egg, locally sourced if possible
•
3/4 cup Traidcraft Golden Caster Sugar
•
1 cup boiling water
•
Orange rind, grated
HOW TO MAKE
Traidcraft Golden Caster Sugar
No time to make your own Jubilee cake? Why not decorate one of our iced fruit cakes with all things red, white and blue?
Add your mixed fruit, sugar and butter into a bowl. Add your boiling water and stir until mixed evenly. Set aside to cool. Once cooled, add your egg (well beaten) and the orange rind. Stir in, then add the flour and mix until combined.

Cook in a medium loaf tin in a moderate, 180c, oven for 45-50 minutes. Allow to cool and decorate with all things Jubilee-themed. We’d love to see photos of your creations once you’re done!
