Another newsletter addition, and more fantastic updates and celebrations I honestly don’t know where this year is going, how can we be in the middle of July! I hope you have all managed to have some kind of break as we approach the halfway point of the year and that you are making the most of your time off when it happens. I am pleased to advise for the first time in our newsletter that we are officially a ‘Real Living Wage Employer’, I am always proud of our people, what we have achieved and what we continue to strive for but taking this step is a significant achievement and I am so proud of us being able to do this. Talking of achievements, a massive thank you and well done for our financial year end results for 22/23. As you will see from the update in the newsletter, you were part of the result that saw us overachieve our budget by £670K!! We know that this wasn’t easy on people at times, with vacancy levels last year around 30% - this result is fantastic and helped support the step in becoming Real Living Wage this year. A few key updates from me are as follows...
The investment plans are progressing well, and you would have seen last month that Trafford Council have formerly appointed Kier as the construction company for move Altrincham. Rest assured, work has been busily taking place at Altrincham since it closed in December, the building has been stripped out, testing and assessments taking place that can only be done once closed and infrastructure being put in place specifically on the roof to aid the investment going in to de-carbonise the centre. Milestone 3 on our Altrincham Road Map is a good read if you haven’t already digested: https://twmove.co.uk/move-altrincham-staff-updates/
move Stretford continues to excite Fran and I, and the team working on this centre design and plan. The centre will accommodate an English Cricket Board Urban Cricket centre and UA92 will be an integral partner post refurb and having the chance to re-think design in breakout areas, café space sporting facilities, equipment, and training requirements for all three organisations is great to do so early in this stage. If you’re not quite sure what an Urban Cricket centre is, have a look at this link highlighting the Leyton Centre https://www.skysports.com/cricket/news/12123/11750644/urban-cricket-centre-opens-in-leyton-as-part-of-ecbs-south-asian-action-plan
Next key milestone for Stretford, is an exec report and key decision in October on final business plan which if approved will mean no further approvals required ahead of construction starting – which would be when Altrincham reopens!!
Talking of UA92 I also went to the launch of their new performance centre at UA92 last month, and we have also entered into a unique partnership for the next 12 months which will see UA92 design our fitness customers first 12-week journey with Trafford Leisure.
Partington consultation is now complete and being reviewed to formalise the brief for the refurbished leisure centre that will need to be completed at some point before the end of 2025! Thanks to great work by the local school Broadoak we have a strong voice coming through from young people which is particularly great.
People
Trafford Leisure are currently recruiting for an IT Manager, and this is a significant step for us in our continued digital and IT Journey. Not only is it a desirable for us to be digitally enabled, our customers and staff are driving the change and with that comes increasing expectations around how simple and easy to use our IT systems are. The scale of IT and Digital in the business means we are at the natural point to take this step in bringing in this expertise and added resource and over the coming months I look forward to sharing more with you on both the individual appointed and the role itself.
Once this position is in place, we will also be recruiting a systems trainer. Our business is open for 14 hours per day and 7 days per week and we know that we need more support and resource to help you and everyone with the systems we have installed in recent years. We want every centre to have the access they need and “super users /champions” for systems at each site, we don’t want our customers to be redirected from centre or from the customer hub and we can’t achieve this without investment in people. We are hearing you loud and clear on some of the systems we have in place and lack of training / support to help you be the best version of yourself in front or with customers. Trafford Leisure wants to provide on the job training and support for where it is needed with Gladstone 360, Office 365 and other tools that should make your life easier but can’t until we invest more in supporting our people with training and useful “how to guides”.
Our first DIGITAL BOT
Thanks to the leadership, dedication and on the job learning that was needed from Carly Heselwood, our Health and Wellbeing Manager, Trafford Leisure has our very first BOT in place and first in GM Active! To those who ask “what is a BOT” - a bot is an automated software application that performs repetitive tasks over a network. So instead of our health and fitness colleagues having to manually input information from one system to another via an e-mail, (which no-one enjoyed or wanted to do) our first BOT imitates the human behaviour, it is faster and more accurate and runs independently without human intervention. It is very very early days, and I’ll ask Carly to share more on this and the referral programme in our next addition. We also need a name for our first BOT – one for you Carly!
Pedal power – (see page 18)
Well done to those who took part on the first challenge, the team finished 40th out of 265 in the UK. The next challenge is September, I am going to get my bike out and I am calling on others to do the same. Can we improve on our position?
SAVE the DATE – only next week now!
So, finally I hope to see as many of you as possible for our family BBQ at the end of the month – Saturday 29th July. Please do make sure you confirm your place, use the QR code – so we can ensure we have the right amount of food for everyone.
Trafford Council has appointed construction company Kier to transform the Oakfield Road centre into a state-of-the-art leisure facility for the community. Extensive work has taken place since the centre closed at Christmas to prepare the site for the main construction and to install solar panels and air sourced heat pumps, part of the council’s bid to make the centre more eco-friendly.
Trafford and Kier have now signed a contract to complete the main works which include a 25-metre swimming pool, a 20-metre learner pool, a pool pod to improve accessibility, a combined lobby area with pool viewing and café, wet side change areas, an inclusive toilet and a health and wellbeing spa facility.
There will also be a wellness assessment room, an enlarged fitness suite, fitness changing and dry change areas, two flexible studio spaces, an immersive indoor cycle studio, a four-court sports hall, a gymnastics hub and staff rooms and offices.
Cllr Cath Hynes, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Leisure, Arts, Culture & Heritage, said: “The health and wellbeing of residents in our communities is extremely important to us and I am delighted that we are completely transforming Altrincham Leisure Centre into an amazing 21st century facility for everyone to enjoy. This is not just a lick of paint – we will be totally transforming this centre – like we did at move Urmston and the results will be just as impressive. We are investing millions of pounds into this project as we believe that is the right thing to do to ensure residents are given top-class facilities to help them improve their health, fitness and wellbeing.”
Jo Cherrett, CEO of Trafford Leisure, added: “We are delighted that Trafford Council have appointed Kier to deliver move Altrincham. Kier has a proven track record in technical excellence and innovative and sustainable redevelopments.
“The appointment is the first step in our new leisure facility becoming a reality for the people of Altrincham.”
Sean Fenner, Managing Director at Kier North and Scotland, added: “We are looking forward to working with the Trafford Council to create the new Altrincham Leisure Centre. Not only will the building deliver first-class wellness and fitness facilities, but it will also provide significant environmental benefits that include decarbonisation.”
Exciting times ahead!

Staff at Stretford Sports Village had to channel their inner warrior when they were part of an interview turned yoga session, testing out a new yoga instructors’ skills; a practical and fun way to interview for new staff.
Jameson Minto is leaving us to take on the next step in his career. He has been a vital part of the teams at Altrincham & Stretford and we wish him all the best for the future ahead! Good luck, Jameson.
Members of the team at the Support Office gathered for a surprise birthday celebration for Emma Shackleton, Finance Director, at Goose Green in Altrincham. We hope you guys had a wonderful time, singing your hearts out! A big happy birthday from us all, Emma.
Morgan, Graphic Designer & Content Creator, recently ran the Great Manchester Half Marathon in support of Mind mental health charity. Raising £1,100 and coming in at a time of 1 hour 39 minutes, it was a very successful day!
The quarterly Employee of the Month for the Support Office has been awarded to Annette Cannon for her fantastic efforts on numerous projects over the past few months. Well done and thanks for all your hard work, Annette!
Vanessa, Louise & Helena formed the dream team at the most recent careers fair at Manchester United FC. It was a really positive day, receiving lots of interest and engagement, let’s hope we can translate that into growing our teams across the business!
Our Customer Hub has gone mobile! A brilliant initiative brought to life, the hub team will now be working from sites on select days throughout the year. This gives them a chance to provide help to our customers with that added physical presence, making it easier in some situations to resolve a customer’s needs. The first session took place at move Urmston, followed by Stretford Sports Village, with more sessions in the diary! It’s something different for our hub team to undertake so a big well done to all involved for putting it all together!
The Customer Hub Employee of the Month has been awarded to the one and only Brenda McCann. Always working with a smile and bringing a positive attitude, this is thoroughly deserved for all of her hard work lately. Well done, Brenda!
Take a look at an insightful update from the Finance Team for June, including the year end financial results from April, which our Finance team have worked incredibly hard to complete over the past few months. Job well done guys, and here’s to the next financial year.
A new finance dashboard allows the team to clearly illustrate the month to month figures. Each graph tells us something different about the last financial month. They’ve been shared by the Finance team so we can all have a better understanding of how our business’ financials work.

Our previous financial year saw a surge in our customers coming back into our leisure centres after the pandemic. We budgeted for a much slower return to business as usual and we can see from the positive variance to budget that we were over cautious in our expectations. The Swimwell programme in particular did very well and we saw a return to above the bench mark average expected of a 76% recovery of this programme to a full recovery. Our move Urmston site provided us with a fitness membership uptake that not only came in above budget but also above the original business plan model supporting the refurbishment investment. We kept tight control of our costs over the financial period and this combined with the excellent work and service provided out at all of our sites resulted in an over performance to budget of £670K. Well done Trafford Leisure!

As we know, all of our staff undergo constant training to upskill themselves and for the better of the business, gaining qualifications throughout the year. We wanted to shine a light on some of these achievements each time our staff newsletter comes around. In June’s Newsletter, we focus on members of the Physical Activity Referral team and their recent achievements:

Sale hosted another pool party with a water gun theme, and it’s safe to say it was a great success for the customers, not to mention our staff also having a little bit of fun as you can see! With the summer holidays approaching, there will be plenty more pool parties to come at Sale; nice job, team!
The Hub and Golf Course team are pictured taking part in a fire drill rehearsal - good practice people!
Yet another improvement made by our commendable Greenkeeping team at Altrincham Golf Course; a new sand mixture for the bunkers was delivered, then distributed around the course by our greenkeepers in time for the summer seasons. They received great feedback from this on socials, so here’s to future upgrades and improvements!
COULD YOU BE ANY MORE GREEN?
