TRAFFORD COLLEGE PROSPECTUS 2024/25 ENTRY

FROM PRINCIPAL JAMES SCOTT

TRAFFORD COLLEGE PROSPECTUS 2024/25 ENTRY

We have a long-standing heritage within our local community and a strong track record of continued success. Our purpose is to unlock the potential and foster the success of the students, employers and communities that we so proudly serve. Ultimately, we exist to change lives for the better. Our aim is two-fold – to provide an inclusive educational offer that serves the needs of our local community and to provide a career focused curriculum that meets the skills needs of businesses across the region, enabling individuals to further their employment prospects. We work with hundreds of employers, locally and regionally, to ensure that the education and training we deliver meets the skills needs of now and the future. In short, we are here to ensure our students develop the skills, attitudes and behaviours required for success in life and work. Our greatest strength is our amazing colleagues who continuously strive to provide an excellent educational experience to all our students. Our teaching staff have a wealth of industry and academic expertise, our educational support staff are highly skilled and responsive to student need, and our business support staff enable us to deliver a quality customer experience.

We pride ourselves on the quality of the student experience. Whilst undertaking a qualification(s) is a main motivation for our students, we also provide a whole range of extra-curricular activities and opportunities that enrich college life. From student societies, volunteering, engagement in climate change and sustainability, student democracy, sports and active leisure – there is almost an endless menu of ways to get involved in the wider college community. The world of further education can seem quite complex. There are many options for you to choose from. We are very well placed to guide you on these important next steps, and our amazing advice and guidance teams including Careers, Employer Partnerships and School Liaison can provide you with the information you need. For young people leaving school we provide technical education (including the new T levels), academic education (including A Levels) and apprenticeships. We also have a range of options available if you are not quite ready for one of those three pathways. So, whatever your interest, do take the opportunity to look through this prospectus and also our website which has further details on all the courses and support that we offer. Come and visit on one of our open days, speak to our colleagues, meet current students, and have a look around our facilities. We will make your experience an incredibly welcome one, and we will provide you with all the information you need to make those all-important decisions on the next steps in your education and career journey.

It’s quite challenging but it’s an exciting experience. You get to achieve things you probably thought you never would, and it gives you a great sense of selfaccomplishment.

From my experience I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to meet new people and being able to take part in all the different activities and groups available. I would definitely recommend it to any new students joining the college who want to see what the college has to offer them in addition to their course.

TRAFFORD COLLEGE PROSPECTUS 2024/25 ENTRY

You must remember that studying isn’t everything and sometimes you just need a break. Going to the clubs and college groups you will learn something new but it’s also a place where you can just relax and be yourself.

Definitely get involved with any of the groups. I think it’s such a massive chance that other colleges don’t provide but it’s something that is going to make you stand out on your personal statement and your CV. It’s also about joining in with the community and having a voice.

WHAT DO OUR STUDENTS THINK?

Take risks and do something that might push you out of your comfort zone because you’ll find things out about yourself that will help you to achieve new things.

An apprenticeship is a real job where the student, who is called an apprentice, learns specific skills and understanding, gains experience and gets paid. An apprentice is an employee with a contract of employment and holiday leave. By the end of an apprenticeship, the successful apprentice will have the right skills and knowledge needed for their chosen career. It can take between one and six years to complete an apprenticeship depending on which programme is chosen, what level it is and the apprentice’s previous experience. Each apprenticeship has a defined contents and structure which is referred to as the ‘standard’. The ‘standard’ ensures that all apprenticeships offered by different providers have the same outcome.

WHAT SUBJECT CAN I STUDY? The Trafford & Stockport College Group offers over 50 standards. An apprentice will have training provided by expert staff, as well as being mentored and supported by their employer. The employer and the college will work together to ensure that the training package meets the needs of both the employer and the apprentice. In turn, this will support the apprentice to become occupationally competent in their chosen career.

A LEVELS A Levels are studied over two years and you will generally choose three subjects to study. Some A Levels have coursework but are mostly graded through exams. A Levels are a great option if you want to find more out about subjects you’re interested in, in a greater depth, but don’t want to specialise in a particular subject yet. Studying A Levels can lead to university, training, further study, degree apprenticeships or employment.

VOCATIONAL Vocational courses help you to develop real-world knowledge, experience and skills. These courses are a great choice if you already have an idea of your future career and will give you a head start when applying to university or looking for employment after you finish with us. Vocational courses may have some examined elements but are mostly assessed by coursework.

T LEVELS

Looking to start work now? Then an apprenticeship could be for you. You’ll learn on the job and pick up a recognised industry standard apprenticeship qualification. You will earn a salary and spend 20% of your apprenticeship completing necessary training and courses to support you in your role.

T Levels are a relatively new qualification and are a high level, technical alternative to A Levels. Like A Levels, they are studied over two years, but they combine the careerfocused elements of vocational courses with the theory and study of A Levels. A key feature of T levels is their extended industry placement where you will spend at least 45 days with a local employer, relevant to your chosen area of study. Find out more about what’s involved in studying a T Level at trafford.ac.uk/t-levels

WHAT SHOULD I STUDY?

Our Altrincham Campus has a variety of different study routes available. Take a look at the information below to get an idea of how the routes are different and which one you might prefer. You can also chat to one of our School Liaison Officers who are out visiting schools or our Careers Team at one of our Open Events if you have any questions about the right route for you.

TRAFFORD COLLEGE PROSPECTUS 2024/25 ENTRY

On our academic programme you will choose to study three subjects over two years. This could be a choice of three A Levels or a combination of A Levels with Applied subjects to make up your three choices. Combinations are subject to timetabling. EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION (EPQ) In addition to your main qualification, we also offer the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). The EPQ is an A Level standalone qualification designed to extend and develop your abilities beyond your syllabus and further prepare you for university or the world of work. If you would like to find out more about the EPQ, simply have a chat with a course tutor when you come and see us at one of our open events.
