STUDENT LEAH MCDERMOTT IS PURSUING A DEGREE IN PSYCHOLOGY AFTER HER EXPERIENCE AT THE COLLEGE ALLOWED HER TO ACHIEVE A* GRADES

The last few years have been a challenging time for those in education and with the pandemic still lingering, students across the world are still coming to terms and coping with the disruptions caused to their learning.

The Cheadle College student, Leah McDermott, felt this first hand like so many others. Initially the impact was seen at secondary school. Lockdown meant that her GCSE examinations were severely affected, and many pupils felt that they didn’t have the same adjustment period from high school to college which would have made the move feel more natural, and less of a daunting prospect.

Leah chose to study Sociology, Criminology and Applied Psychology with us as the college stood out to her above other colleges when attending open days. She said, ‘The Cheadle College showed that they care deeply about supporting their students’ – a value that was extremely important in the circumstances. “It was made clear that the college ensures all students receive the support they require to achieve the best they can, which includes advise on what pathway would benefit them most in their college experience”.

Leah continued, “A Levels are obviously expected to be difficult, but whenever I was struggling I found support in the college. This made my time at college easier to deal with and more enjoyable.”

Lockdown also affected Leah in her first year at college, but thanks to the passion and dedication of her teachers, she never felt that remote learning was having an adverse effect on her education and it hasn’t stopped Leah getting the grades she needed to go on to study at university, saying “I have chosen to study Psychology as I feel my teachers have provided me with the support and information required to pursue this at degree level”.

We wish Leah all the best in her future studies and we’re sure she’ll thrive at university and in her chosen career.

STUDENTFOCUS

CREATIVE MEDIA STUDENTS RAISE OVER £4,000 FOR CHARITY

Year 13 Level 3 Creative Media students at Cheadle College have raised over £4,000 for charities across Greater Manchester.

As well as the project helping to form part of the students’ coursework and ultimately go towards their grades, the money raised will significantly help the countless people and animals that these charities support. In total, 21 students managed to raise £4296.75 for 19 different chosen charities.

“Working to a new Specification, this was the first year I had devised and set this brief, our students really seized the initiative with this project and it went way beyond my original expectations! I am staggered that just 21 students working in our classrooms selflessly managed to raise this incredible amount of money for people and animals in need, this is a great thing they can add to their CVs for the future. This project has proven how the media skills our students have been taught can be used effectively to influence people from around the world to donate to their causes. One student, Bobby Elley, singlehandedly managed to donate £1575

to The Seashell Trust, a Cheadle-based charity which supports disabled children & young people with complex learning difficulties.

Bobby, along with his 82 year-old Grandad, Stanley, tackled a 10km walk through Sale and Chorlton Water Park to raise funds for Seashell. This incredible amount smashed his original target of £800, which itself was ambitious.

Seashell is especially important to Bobby, as he attended CADS with his twin brother. CADS is Seashell’s inclusive sports programme, which provides opportunities for children and young people to participate in unique and inclusive physical activities together with health and wellbeing options.

“I have a long personal history of benefiting from Seashell. I learnt to swim there, used the inclusive gym, and met lots of new friends at one of their inclusive holiday clubs. My disabled twin brother goes for respite at Seashell, and I feel it is only right to support them with my utmost gratitude.” - Bobby Elley

COMMUNITY COLLEGE KITCHEN

We are well aware, as an organisation, of the challenges our students and their families face each day.

In responding to that we have developed a co-operative in partnership with our community partners, to help remove the everyday barriers to a successful student experience.

We are proud to be able to offer a “just ask” service, which our students can access discreetly from their student SharePoint, where they can request everyday items which may have created a barrier to their focus on education. Items include, food staples, personal hygiene products, hot meal vouchers and any other essentials.

This cooperative way of working means our students can access the support they need and in addition, have the opportunity to support their community by volunteering.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is the world’s leading youth engagement award. You can take part in volunteering, physical and skilled activities as well as an expedition that will transform your life. The award can be done alongside your study programme with just a small amount of weekly input and big rewards. In a recent survey of universities and employers, the Duke of Edinburgh Award ranked highest in a list of extracurricular activities that they would like to see on someone’s personal statement or C.V.!

NEWCAMPUS

The Cheadle College gets government approval for £27 Million redevelopment

Cheadle, along with Marple Sixth Form College joined The Trafford College Group last year to sit alongside Stockport College and Trafford College, with the combined group now serving over 11,000 students across the two boroughs of Stockport and Trafford.

The investment at Cheadle will deliver a purpose-built facility replacing the existing estate, most of which dates to the 1950s. The redevelopment will enable the college to provide high-quality, enhanced facilities for the entire offer including A Levels, provision for students with high needs and technical education. The provision for adult learners will be significantly upgraded through the project, including new facilities for highly popular and successful Horticulture and Arts courses. There will also be new facilities to support the student experience including learning resource centre, student services and dedicated social spaces.

With government approval, the project is expected to complete at the end of 2024 and now moves to the appointment of a construction partner following the initial appointment of the IBI Group as architects and educational specialists, Abacus as the project management team. The proposed redevelopment follows similar levels of investment seen at Stockport College over the last few years where the final stage of its £23m redevelopment is due to conclude at the end of this year.

Our ambition is to provide our students with an educational environment that can support and inspire them in their studies and to provide a platform for their success in the future.

As a college group we are enormously proud to have the ability to invest college and government funds in two educational institutions in Stockport in such a short space of time.

Every course will also have a programme of guest speakers from industry who will visit your classes to share with you their professional experiences and what is important in making yourself a success.

We offer volunteering opportunities for you to gain new experiences, develop teamwork and communication skills, support your community, and build your CV. We also support an annual charity which is chosen by staff and students at the college where you can be involved in fundraising activities and build your skills.

All full-time students will have a minimum entitlement of 36 hours of work-related learning per year, and for many of our students this is far greater.

We offer a wide range of courses from Entry Level through to University Level, which means that there is a course available for you at an appropriate level. We are committed to ensuring that no matter what your qualifications, you can still progress and achieve your career goals at The Cheadle College.

Entry requirements are a guide to which level of course will be right for you. In order to be accepted on your chosen course, you must meet the minimum requirements for that level of study.

No formal entry requirement or qualifications are required to enrol on an Entry/Level 1 course, however, we expect all of our students to demonstrate a willingness to learn and work and the behaviours and attitudes that will support their progression and success.

WHAT SHOULD I STUDY?

The Cheadle College has a variety of different study routes available and if you’re not sure which one would suit you best, take a look at the information below to get an idea of how the routes are different and which one you might prefer. You can also chat to one of our School Liaison Officers who are out visiting schools or our Careers Team at one of our Open Events if you have any questions about the right route for you.

A LEVELS

A Levels are studied over two years and you will generally choose three subjects to study. Some A Levels have coursework but are mostly graded through exams. A Levels are a great option if you want to find more out about subjects you’re interested in, in a greater depth, but don’t want to specialise in a particular subject yet. Studying A Levels can lead to university, training, further study, degree apprenticeships or employment.

T LEVELS VOCATIONALCOURSES

T Levels are a relatively new qualification and are a high level, technical alternative to A Levels. Like A Levels, they are studied over two years, but they combine the career-focused elements of vocational courses with the theory and study of A Levels. A key feature of T levels is their extended industry placement where you will spend at least 45 days with a local employer, relevant to your chosen area of study.

Vocational courses help you to develop real-world, knowledge, experience and skills. These courses are a great choice if you already have an idea of your future career and will give you a head start when applying to university or looking for employment after you finish with us. Vocational courses may have some examined elements but are mostly assessed by coursework.

WJEC APPLIED

CRIMINOLOGY

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Equivalent to 1 A Level, Applied Criminology looks at the types of crime that take place within our society and examines how we decide what behaviour is deemed ‘criminal’. It also looks at the roles of the personnel involved when a crime is detected.

During the first year you will look at different types of crime, influences on perceptions of crime and why some crimes are unreported and in year 2, you will start by gaining a deeper understanding of the criminal justice system, from crime scene to courtroom. You’ll also look at the different processes and personnel involved from the moment a crime has been identified, all the way through to the verdict. Great subjects to consider studying alongside this qualification include Sociology, Psychology and English.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER THE COURSE?

This course has been designed to prepare students for University study in Criminology and similar fields. If you have aspirations to work in the Police Force, legal profession or forensic sciences, or have a keen interest in crime and criminal behaviour, then this course could be for you.

ASSESSMENT: 50% internally assessed exams and 50% externally assessed exams. 100% Exam-based

A LEVEL

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Biology is a tremendously varied and enjoyable subject, enabling you to develop valuable knowledge and skills. The course is designed to provide a grounding and real-life contextualisation of all aspects of Biology including Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Animal and Plant Physiology, Ecology, Molecular Biology and Genetics. You will develop your biological knowledge through a variety of means: interactive tasks, independent learning, group work and laboratory practicals. Your practical skills will develop through a range of core practical’s gaining the ‘Practical Skills Endorsement’ at the end of the second year as you begin to develop your own methods to perform practical’s. You will work individually and with your peers in a variety of activities including practical’s, discussions, fieldwork and modelling theories. We also have a dedicated work placement team to help you secure a placement in your chosen field including medicine and working with animals.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER THE COURSE?

Biology is an essential qualification for a number of health-related courses. It also develops valuable practical and problem-solving skills that are useful for employment and university. Students have progressed from here to study Biology related degrees at many top universities including Oxford and Cambridge.

ASSESSMENT: Three exams in the summer term of the second year, each two hours long

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Business is an exciting and topical course which students can relate to. You will study topics such as marketing, finance, human resources and operations management and analyse how they influence the way in which a business performs.

The course also looks at the impact that external factors have on business activity such as interest rates, environmental issues and globalisation. You will develop an array of skills such as analysing data and critical thinking on the Business course which will be invaluable in later life whether you work in a Business or decide to run a Business of your own.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER THE COURSE?

You will develop advanced skills of application, analysis, and evaluation. These skills are transferable and will help you build a solid foundation for higher study. Experience of studying business and management should contribute positively to your future employment and promotional prospects. After this course you can go on to study at university or look for an apprenticeship or employment.

CHEMISTRY A LEVEL

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

A Level Chemistry is a rigorous, challenging and ultimately rewarding course that develops your scientific skills and knowledge.

In the first year, you will explore the fundamental principles that form the basis of chemistry and apply this to how chemistry is used in the modern world. Wherever possible, you will carry out experimental work to illustrate the theoretical principles they study. The second year explores the big ideas further and allows you to develop a more sophisticated and comprehensive understanding of chemistry. We study the AQA specification as it provides a comprehensive insight into different fields in chemistry, including particles, energetics, organic chemistry, kinetics and analysis. We will build on the core principles you have learned at GCSE and develop and extend your skills and knowledge of this fascinating subject.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER THE COURSE?

A Level Chemistry is highly valued by universities and employers as it enables you to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Popular courses at university for A Level Chemistry students include medicine, dentistry, forensic science, veterinary science, and courses related to the pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Studying the English language is not only fascinating but also enables you to develop a wide range of writing skills which are invaluable for both further study and future employment.

Accent, dialect, how language is changing and how we first learn language are only part of the subject. You also have the opportunity to write creatively and to investigate topics of personal interest such as gender, technology, and power. The very good results achieved by our students enable them to progress onto a wide range of university courses and careers. Developing understanding of and the ability to use the English language creates versatile individuals and broadens career horizons.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER THE COURSE?

Once you’ve completed the English Language course, you’ll have picked up a range of useful skills including the ability to analyse, debate, create a strong argument and communicate effectively. These skills will prove highly useful when you continue with the subject at university and in employment. This specification is a good building block for higher education courses and careers in journalism, marketing, publishing, drama, academia, linguistics, and new media.

ENGLISHLITERATURE A LEVEL

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The English Literature course includes a broad range of styles and genres, from the established canon to contemporary writing. You will develop knowledge and understanding of the writer’s craft and how language, form and structure are used to create meaning.

English Literature enables you to develop critical and analytical skills; these are highly valued by employers and universities. The course complements all arts, humanities and sciences. Our staff are passionate about the subject and eager to share their love of learning with our students. The classroom environment is engaging and stimulating.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER THE COURSE?

Once you’ve finished English Literature you will have acquired a range of useful skills including the ability to analyse and evaluate literature. You will be able to articulate independent opinions and judgements and express these effectively. These skills will be useful if you decide to study English Literature, or any other subject, at university and for careers in journalism, marketing, publishing, drama, academia, linguistics, and new media.

HISTORY A LEVEL

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

To make sense of the world we live in it is essential to understand key events, individuals, movements, and conflicts that have shaped history. History’s importance goes beyond the subject’s intrinsic interest and appeal. Every aspect of our lives, from our beliefs, culture, institutions, language, and way of life are all shaped by the past. The course follows the theme of ‘revolutions’ in modern and early modern Europe.

You will study a variety of early modern and modern topics by expert staff who have authored textbooks and are experienced examiners. You will carry out independent investigative research that equips you with skills required at university. Visits include St Petersburg, Parliament, castles, battlefields, and other historic sites.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER THE COURSE?

Once you’ve finished, you’ll have a range of useful skills including the ability to analyse, debate, create a strong argument and communicate effectively. These will be a really big help to you at university and in employment. Employers rate the skills of a historian very highly and history students find employment in a wide range of jobs including research, journalism and the media, management, and public relations.

LAW A LEVEL

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Law is the subject for you if you have a genuine interest in the Law or the English Legal System if you enjoy an intellectual challenge or if you are interested in becoming a barrister or solicitor.

Law essentially involves the study of the English Legal System and the system of Law Making in England and Wales along with a detailed look at key aspects of Criminal Law, the Law of Tort and Human Rights. You will learn about the nature of law with regards to the differences between criminal law and civil law. You will learn about who works in the English Legal System, the civil and criminal court structure and how the law is made. You will consider in detail the criminal offences of murder and manslaughter, property offences, attempts and general defences. The law on tort including the different types of negligence as well as Human Rights Law. You will develop analytical skills, the skill of critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Once you’ve finished your Law A Level, you will have picked up a range of useful skills including the ability to analyse, debate, use cases to provide evidence and communicate effectively. These will be a really big help when you continue with your studies at university and in employment.

MATHEMATICS A LEVEL

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

You will study both Pure and Applied Mathematics. Pure Mathematics develops the ideas introduced at GCSE, such as Algebra, Graphs and Trigonometry. The Applied Mathematics content is drawn from Statistics and Mechanics. Studying Mathematics gives you techniques for understanding and solving problems and it encourages the development of a logical and enquiring mind.

We spend huge parts of our life consuming media. It surrounds us all the time and we use it for all kinds of different and varied reasons.

Media Studies teaches you to develop critical perspectives on what you watch, read, listen to, or play every day. The Travel and Tourism industry is one of the most vibrant industries in the world. This course gives students a lively and varied introduction to the travel industry. The course is equivalent to three A levels after two years.

The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport launched Visit Britain’s long-term tourism growth strategy for Britain. Progression Curriculum Independent Living

Our specialist provision supports students with special educational needs to achieve Entry 1 and Entry 2 qualifications in a secure discrete environment. The qualifications are current and support individuals to achieve a positive outcome at a low level, the course offers flexibility to respond to individual needs and circumstances of learners.

The curriculum is based on preparation for adulthood, with outcomes including employment, independent living, community partnership and health.

Maths and English delivery is contextualised within the course content, bespoke to each learners needs and level.

Progression Curriculum Independent Living

Designed to re-engage students in learning, with a clear focus on personal, social, emotional and skills for independence.

ENTRY 3 & LEVEL 1

Progression Curriculum Pathways

Broad based vocational pathways allow learners to experience different sectors, alongside improving maths and English skills. Part of the course is delivered in industry standard facilities by specialist teachers. Based at our Altrincham, Stockport and Stretford campus.

At our Cheadle site learners explore different sectors alongside work experience within a chosen occupation.

LEVEL 1

Progression Curriculum Supported Internship

In partnership with Pure Innovations offers learners a pre-employment programme. A unique opportunity for learners with learning disabilities or difficulties to enhance their employment skills in a real working environment. Based at Trafford General Hospital and Stepping Hill Hospital.

STUDY PROGRAMMES:

• Are individualised and have a person centred approach supporting each learner to identify and explore realistic career options.

• Provide effective career guidance that ensures all learners, whatever their needs, backgrounds and ambitions, know the options that are available, supporting them to maximise their individual potential.

• Include opportunities to develop essential transferable and social skills

• Encourage independence and support learners to self-advocate and make informed decisions

• Provide access to job tasters, work experience, social enterprise, mentoring and inspirational guest speakers.

INCLUSIVE OFFER INCLUDES:

• Independent Advice and Guidance from our curriculum / inclusion team

• Diverse range of courses from Entry Level 1 to Level 1 supporting an appropriate starting point within the department

• Contribute to the initial, baseline and continuing assessment of learners and their progress including transition

• Additional support needs bespoke to the individual requirements

• Provide pastoral support for learners with a wide range of learning difficulties, disabilities, emotional behavioural issues and other more complex needs.

• 1-1 support and group support as identified.

GCSE FULL-TIME

WHAT COURSES ARE AVAILABLE?

Our GCSE programme is a one-year exam-based package where you will study the core elements of English language, maths, chemistry and business.

WHO IS IT FOR?

The general programme is most suitable for students who have narrowly missed their GCSE 4/5 grades in some subjects and need these to progress. Students who have not had the opportunity to take their GCSE qualifications for a range of reasons, including ESOL learners, will be able to take an aptitude assessment and have an interview to assess their suitability for this programme.

The GCSE full-time programme requires a mixture of GCSE grades at 3 and 4, or a successful assessment and interview.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

Once you have completed this course you will be able to move on to one of our further education courses with the potential to progress to university afterwards.
