ECCN Number: Meaning, Structure And How To Find It ECCN is an acronym for Export Control Classification Number and is used explicitly to identify products or goods subject to export control rules of a country. Apart from ECCN, the other commercially traded goods have an EAR99 rating, which means that the goods are not being shipped to a sanctioned country. They are also not shipped to a denied party, prohibited entity, or a sanctioned country end-user. More or less, the exporters do not require a specific license for those products. On the other hand, all those products with an ECCN issued fall in the former category. The exporter needs to take thorough precautions while looking at the rules and regulations and get the relevant license before going ahead with the export. Now that we know What is an ECCN number, let us find out about its format. Structure Of ECCN An ECCN is a five-character alpha-numeric code. A typical example of an ECCN could be 1C002. Let us now understand what each character means: 1. The starting digit denotes the CCL category into which the product falls. Overall, there are ten such categories from which you can choose according to the product. Therefore, an ECCN starting with digit one would be chemicals, whereas the ECCN beginning with three would be for electronic equipment and components. 2. Followed by the first digit, we see an alphabet, which represents the product group. Again, there are five different product categories. For example, there are various character codes for systems, software, materials, etc. Following are the five product groups, each represented by a different English alphabet: a. Systems, equipment, and components b. Tests, inspections, and production equipment c. Material d. Software e. Technology 3.
