Digging for Victory!

A few weeks before the virus really struck home in the UK and we were all dragged into the world of lock-down and furloughing (why does this sound so horticultural?), I finally realized that, after years of avoiding the issue, I needed to join the ranks of the allotmenteers. What really swung it was a dog walk through the local allotment patch. I looked at the plethora of little plots with ramshackle sheds and homemade greenhouses; the enterprise and creativity on show was incredible - I just had to have one! I tracked down the Allotmenteer-in-Chief and virtually begged to be allowed into this venerable club. A few weeks later my wish came true and we had been ‘allotted’ our very own piece of England.

To be fair this, wasn’t my first encounter with the world of allotments. During my degree I did my final dissertation on what was gloriously entitled “The Nature and Future of Urban Allotment Systems.” For an entire summer I became an allotment groupie – hanging around with old blokes in flat caps while being regaled by stories of their monster cucumbers and the best homing pigeons in Rotherham.

Amazingly, my dissertation did draw some useful conclusions – one of the most interesting being that not everyone had a flat cap and quite a few were middle-class “lifestyle” practitioners. Some of these people even had proper jobs and were bringing new methods and crops to the ranks of cabbages and carrots. Beehives, bantams and exotic fruit and vegetables were starting to infiltrate the site, much to the amusement of the old boys – and some even had the audacity to ignore vegetables altogether and cultivate flowers instead!

So, decades after submitting my academic masterpiece, I now find myself the proud owner of a real-life allotment – and the story doesn’t stop there. As of a few days ago we were miraculously upgraded to be the proud custodians of a king-sized plot that had been abandoned for some years. Clearly this had been a much-loved project and featured no less than two sheds, a lovely greenhouse, a huge pile of pallets (every allotmenteer’s dream) and a walk-in chicken run.

My flabber was gasted at the possibilities of this veritable smallholding and I couldn’t believe my luck at taking on this challenge at a time when the gods of weather, lockdown and furloughing had all come together in my favour! Ever since my partner and I

got the green light, we’ve spent at least three hours every day digging, chopping, shifting, incinerating, weeding, daydreaming and getting to know all our brilliant neighbours.

However, the most important lesson so far has been re-purposing. Nothing gets thrown away on an allotment and it’s probably fair to say that most allotmenteers are by nature skinflints. We haven’t spent a penny on our plot so far and it seems that there is a fertile allotment grapevine - if we need the odd plant pot or spare tomato plant, I’m sure it will miraculously appear. Likewise, I’ve already rehomed some of our inherited pallet mountain and I’m well on the way to passing my allotmenteering initiation!

So, what do you do with a magnificent allotment once you’ve finally cleared out the pesky weeds and clutter? Remarkably, over the years I’ve spent a fortune on all sorts of flowers and shrubs but have never spent anything on edible plants. Until now that is. Like the rest of the world, I’ve been desperate to get my hands on as many scrummy vegetables as I can – and finally a box full of seeds arrived yesterday. Now they are spread out on the dining table and we are planning the next stage on our journey to Dig for Victory over Coronavirus.

Don’t Fence Me In

I’m feeling quite chipper right now - Mrs Alisa Losif has just emailed explaining that “My heart has chosen to bless you.”

Obviously, she is a lady of great timing in life, as I have just returned from my newly acquired allotment feeling particularly chuffed with my most excellent veg plots. I’m now two months into my allotmenteering venture and I can honestly say that this has been the most fortunate and well-timed horticultural project I have ever been involved in.

I’m struggling to remember the last garden that ever filled me with the same satisfaction that I’m getting out of this weedinfested plot, and I have to keep reminding myself that this isn’t actually my property, but rather a small slice of a larger community garden. Sadly, I’ll have to hand it back at some point in the future. The reality is that “Mrs” Losif’s felicitations were probably dispatched by some chancer sat in an internet café in deepest Nigeria looking for a cut of my hard-earned furlough pay - but I’ll gladly take his or her blessings!

This does the job perfectly and also looks pretty good, all things considered, but it’s not the sort of boundary that you would be aiming for in your own garden to provide the security and privacy that we all strive to achieve. The fact that we’re an island nation that has been invaded over the centuries by Vikings, Romans, Germans (only a small corner), Tesco’s and the Grey Squirrel means that we take the privacy and integrity of our property very seriously - an Englishman’s home is most definitely his castle.

One of the first jobs I tackled on the plot was to take down what was left of the dilapidated boundary fence – constructed many moons ago with great love and attention out of dismantled pallets. This wasn’t done to keep out my neighbours on the plot (who I hadn’t actually met at that stage) but more to keep Ripley the dog from going to visit them.

So we had the mother of all bonfires to get rid of all the rotting remains (well, we had quite a few to be honest!) and replaced it with a wire mesh job, conjured

Although I’ve yet to plan a moat and drawbridge when designing a garden, I do spend an inordinate amount of time ensuring that the extremities are not only pleasing to the eye but also make effective boundaries, as there’s little point in designing and building a fantastic garden if you can’t enjoy it without feeling secure. The truth is that there are no garden boundaries that would keep out a determined intruder and, as there could be extensive areas to demarcate, then it’s really important that you

choose something that is as cost-effective and practical as possible. For those with time on their hands or who want to do something positive for nature, you cannot go wrong with a beautiful hedge. A really well grown Copper Beech is probably my favourite – but you can mix and match with standard Green Beech to give a stunning soft boundary that needs minimum maintenance. A more obvious solution is fencing panels but whatever route you take, it is worth having a chat with your neighbours first. You never know - you may be able to share costs but, in any case, it would be a smart diplomatic move, particularly when boundary ownerships are slightly grey.

Whatever boundary you decide to put up - please don’t forget your neighbours on the other side. My new wire netting allotment fence is the perfect solution for keeping Ripley at bay whilst still allowing us to have many convivial chats with our new allotment friends. The perfectly friendly boundary solution I wish we all could enjoy!

Is Facebook Eavesdropping on Your Conversations?

This must be one of the most widespread conspiracy theories of our time. People chat about something, maybe a holiday destination, a type of makeup or a film that’s just been released… it could be anything really. They don’t talk on their phones and they don’t do any kind of online search or visit any websites related to whatever it is they are chatting about. Even so, the next day they see an advert for the subject of the conversation on their Facebook feed. How can this be?

The conclusion that many people jump to is that Facebook must be listening to their conversations through the microphone on their smartphones, identifying various keywords and then using those keywords to target adverts at them. This belief is so pervasive that when Mark Zuckerberg gave evidence to Congress in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, he was twice asked if Facebook listened in on private conversations via people’s smartphones. In both cases his answer was an emphatic no.

The Facebook app does in fact have a feature that accesses the feed from your phone’s mic; it was included when Facebook started to offer a function that identifies songs by listening to a snatch of music, in the same way that Siri and Alexa do.

The default setting is for the microphone to be on, although you can turn it off in your phone’s privacy settings. If you decide to do this, make sure you disable the mic for Instagram and WhatsApp too, as these are also Facebook platforms and the three are becoming increasingly integrated.

So, is Facebook listening in on our conversations?

I’m inclined to say no just as emphatically as Mark Zuckerberg did. For starters, recording people’s conversations without implicit consent is illegal in many countries, including the UK. The privacy scandals that have engulfed Facebook in the last few years have done immense damage. I don’t believe they would risk further, perhaps terminal, damage to the company simply to make a slight improvement to advert targeting. Secondly, and more importantly, they simply don’t need to resort to listening in on private conversations.

Facebook users happily provide a colossal amount of information about their demographic profiles,

lifestyles and preferences every single day. The AI programmes that Facebook uses to analyse all this data are uncannily good at deriving insight into people’s behaviour and choices. Research has shown that Facebook can do a better job of identifying character traits in one of its users than even their best friend can. Why pick through billions of hours of conversation trying to derive insight that you already possess.

If you think about it, Facebook’s remarkable efficiency in targeting its advertising is no bad thing. Most people accept that being exposed to advertising is a reasonable price to pay for the undoubted benefits that social media offers. If that advertising is for things that people are genuinely interested in, so much the better.

However, there is an important caveat here.

Using behavioural insight from social media to sell holidays or makeup or cinema tickets is one thing; using it to influence which political party people vote for or which way they vote in a referendum is completely another. This is particularly true if the data used to derive that insight was illegally obtained, as was the case with Cambridge Analytica. At what stage does political advertising become propaganda?

If you still don’t trust Facebook not to eavesdrop on you, disable the microphone in your phone’s privacy settings and see if it makes a difference.

Or if you really don’t want Mark Zuckerberg to know everything about you, try spending less time on social media and more time chatting to your friends, watching films, going on holiday or even putting on makeup. Facebook doesn’t have to own your life.

Creating a feature wall is a simple and generally inexpensive way of adding impact to a room.

By giving the room a focus, it instantly makes it more interesting and inviting. Feature walls can also be used as an optical illusion; for instance, they can make a long narrow room appear shorter and wider.

Chimney breasts are a gift when it comes to creating a feature wall.

An ornate fireplace gives instant focus to the room. If the fireplace has been bricked up, consider reinstating it with an insert and mantlepiece that complements the décor of the room. (Make sure you get the flue checked by a professional if you are planning on using the fire). When

using a contrasting wallpaper or paint, you can just apply it to the chimney breast itself, rather than the whole wall.

Contrast is key. Use light neutral colours for the rest of the room and then go to town on the feature wall. Emerald greens, burgundy reds, rich greys and vivid turquoise all work well. If you’re using wallpaper, be brave.

You can get away with big, bold, bright patterns – florals are particularly popular right now.

You don’t have to rely on colour or a fireplace to create a feature wall.

Shelving can be flexible, practical and attractive – use it to cover all or part of the wall, for example in the alcoves at the side of the chimney breast. Try varying the

September 23rd 1459 (Part 17) National events had very little relevance to the common folk of Forsbrook and surrounding villages at any time, for the intrigues and conspiracies of their superiors could not reach to this part of the world…or so they thought! Beyond the daily toil that filled their lives, what happened beyond their borders had little consequence or import other than meeting their annual rent for land, providing a roof over their head and food in their bellies.

What the Lord did or did not do played no part in their daily routine.

There were of course occasional times of respite during the religious Holy days that offered some relief from the annual tedium in the fields… and the onset of harvest during mid-summer of the year 1459 presented a time of hard work followed by rejoicing and plenty. Thus when the village moot was called together at short notice by the stream that trickled gently through the meadow field, the men instinctively knew that something unusual had caused a commotion to break the harvest ingathering.

Their feeling of curiosity that something good was about to happen was sadly to be short lived and quickly turned to concern.

For Ralph Carnwell, the village blacksmith, looked extremely grim faced as he strode earnestly into the middle of the gathering.

He was a squat man who had surpassed his fortieth year and was showered with long straight dark hair that reached to his shoulders. Standing quietly for a moment before commencing, he allowed the muttering to stop

before he began his speech.

Never slow to anger, nor hide his feelings, his eyes demanded attention… for the deep bronzed furrows on his brow made it clearly obvious to all that something of great concern was to be announced.

He declared that six men were to be selected to represent the village and join the militia being raised by their Lord of Caverswall, William Venables. There was no choice but to comply.

The Lord was offering 4 pennies for a bowyer and 2 pennies for men with a polearm….considered a good day rate of pay, the request was met with more than enough ‘volunteers’ who wished to escape the labour on the campus.

‘The women and children would have to do more to gather in the hay and offset the labour shortfall’ Ralph exclaimed. He could provide no further explanation regarding what had caused this emergency, what the men would be doing or even where they would be going. He was lost for answers!

Those selected would leave immediately and report with him to the castle. They were to collect their longbow along with at least forty arrows each plus wear any personal mail and iron helm they may have in their possession.

All must feed themselves for at least two days!

The men mustered by the ford within the hour and marched towards Caverswall with as much haste as they could manage.

There they found the Lord’s Sargeant John de Greene and a gaggle of other ‘soldiers’ by the

stocks in the square.

With two hours of daylight left in the day, the little army continued westward towards the setting sun.

As they settled down for the night by the large, stone church in Stoke, Ralph discovered the reason for their service had been called by Sir James Touchet, the Lord of Audley to fend off a small band of Yorkshiremen who were heading south through Cheshire.

They represented the despised Duke of York and Audley had been given the task to stop them at whatever the cost by King Henry VI himself.

Trying to fully explain the reasons to his companions was never going to be an easy task because he didn’t completely understand it all himself. He simply outlined that they should have no worries, for the band of renegades against the King would be small and they should let their arrows do the talking.

The new day dawned with a mist as the band of peasant warriors continued their trek over the immediate hills, forever moving south-westward. Many thought with some nervousness that they might be heading towards the dreaded Waelesmen who fought in the mountains far beyond.

However shortly after mid-day as they passed through a thick wood and having completed some twelve footsore miles following an ancient road, the emerging line of men saw the tops of numerous coloured tents about six furlongs distant across the wide open plain.

They were not the enemy, only

Food was plentiful and easily gathered from the supply train that spread across the campsite which was known as Blore Heath. The number of men who had mobilised from across the whole area of Cheshire and parts of Staffordshire and Shropshire could not be counted but some suggested as many as fifteen to twenty thousand were camped across the nearby fields.

An uneasy night was spent under the great hedge by the men from Forsbrook with sleep often broken by steady rainfall that ceased just as the first rays of light broke from the east. Stretching tired limbs and warming stiff bodies against their small single fire was interrupted by a clarion of trumpets that echoed throughout the encampment.

‘Alarm’ went up followed by the cry to ‘fall in!’ shouted Ralph and John Greene. Gathering their discarded belongings, the men of Caverswall, Forsbrook, Draycott and Dilhorne made up a small detachment of around thirty two men divided into two ranks.

Those with bows and those with bill hooks.

Within a few minutes the body of men joined with others and thereafter each man was given a blood red ribbon of woollen cloth to tie around their left forearm.

What was it for they asked and were told ‘to tell friend from foe… what else you clod bumpkin!’ came the reply. And so they waited and waited.

The sun rose ever higher and climbed towards mid-day until finally the order was given to move beyond the hedge row.

Only then did they see the full array of Audley’s army stretching across the brow of a broad ridge overlooking a shallow stream which ran between them and the

enemy. It was a majestic site with knights on their destriers, bearing the red and yellow household colours of Audley, topped by their master dressed in complete harness.

A fine and comforting sight indeed…. For the enemy had arrived.

Emerging from the same wood that Ralph and his men had passed through during the early afternoon before, the so called ‘small band’ turned out to be much larger than they expected… yet still far fewer than their own numbers. The glinting of polished blued steel gave away this was not a crowd of conscripted peasants but trained professional veterans that faced them but four hundred paces away.

Audley took the earliest opportunity to attack with his cavalry force from the left and charged down into the shallow valley denying his own archers to test the distance first. It was a foolish move for a volley of arrows decimated the assault as they tried to cross the stream.

The far side was steep and horses struggled to climb the bank to press home the attack.

The Forsbrook contingent led

by John Green edged forward with the long line of archers to support the retreating men on horseback. Before they even achieved a shootable distance another shower of arrows landed amongst them. The Yorshiremen had the advantage of a following wind which gave them an unconquerable edge.

Men fell, including Ralph with an arrow which pierced the mail coif that surrounded his neck. As his lifeless body fell backwards the men from Forsbrook stopped their forward momentum and shot a volley in return. It was useless against the strengthening wind and fell harmless in the space between the opposing forces.

Even before a further shaft could be nocked on the string yet another deluge of arrows caught them once again. Some pole men stood firm whilst others mainly archers turned and started backwards.

Audley recognising the events unfolding to his front urged yet another cavalry charge only to receive a fatal blow as his charger was brought down by a multitude of arrows. Falling heavily onto the field already strewn by the dead and dying, the surviving few witnessed the last moments of Audley’s life for an enemy soldier dispatched him with a poleaxe with two blows to the head.

Immediately and without orders the enemy charged ‘en masse’ and although outnumbered they achieved the unthinkable, completing the Lancastrian rout in less than one hour. Many turned and tried to run, whilst some threw away their red arm braids, changed sides and fell upon their one time comrades.

John Green was said to have fought to the last, until he too was overpowered along with all his local retinue which fell around him.

Over two thousand local men perished that day, along with many of the wounded who simply crawled away unattended from the battlefield to die alone and in agony. With the victors pillaging and looting the dead, only a single survivor claimed to have returned to his home in Dilhorne to tell the tale.

Always viewed with some suspicion and disbelief, his exploits on the battlefield would occupy any listener who would dare to enquire about what had happened at Blore Heath on that day for many years to come.

How to Save a Life I am living in a surreal world.

In glorious sunshine, I take the dogs out for a walk on streets that are devoid of cars and through parks that are empty of people. It’s like a scene from Zombie Apocalypse, except there aren’t even any zombies.

The only people I do see, and there are lots of them, are runners and cyclists. It’s not just the usual suspects either – MAMILs on £2000 carbon fibre bikes and lycra clad runners who are perpetually in training for a half marathon – there are elderly types who look like they haven’t broken a sweat in 20 years and red faced portly people struggling to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Loads of people are taking advantage of the lockdown to try to get in shape.

When I get home, instead of trying to catch the various sports results, I tune in for the daily deaths update, along with millions of other people. This is not because I am morbidly obsessed with how many people are going to die of Coronavirus; it is because I am desperately searching for a sign, any sign, that we over the peak and on the downward slope of the mountain. It is an unwritten rule that whoever announces the daily deaths must insert the word “sadly” before the word “died” and emphasise that every death is a personal tragedy for the family and loved ones of the deceased. This is tru, of course, but it has always been true – you still mourn the death of a loved one whatever they died of.

As time has gone on, I have become adept at delving down into the statistics that lie behind that horrific number.

For instance, the daily deaths isn’t the number of people who died the previous day; some of them might have passed away a month ago. Nor did they necessarily die of Covid-19.

Yes, they were infected with Coronavirus, but they could have died of a brain embolism or simply because they were 102 years old and every day they continue to draw breath is a gift from the good Lord.

One of the most remarkable statistics is that 91% of the people who sadly died had a pre-existing health condition.

In fact, on average they had 2.5 such conditions. Of course, health conditions vary in severity but, for the NHS to already be aware of one, I’m guessing that we’re not talking about a case of athlete’s foot here.

Actually, we know what the three most common conditions are – heart disease, dementia and diabetes. These are also three of the biggest killers in the UK in normal times. Another striking statistic is that 75% of the deceased were classified as obese. Again, we don’t know how overweight they really

were, but I’d imagine that many of were tending towards the morbidly obese end of the scale.

Now, here’s the kicker; there’s a direct link between being obese and developing heart disease and diabetes. There’s also growing evidence of a link between obesity and dementia.

I’m no statistician but I’d say that there’s strong evidence that if you’re seriously overweight and you contract Covid-19, you’re more likely to die.

In the UK 29% of people are classified as obese, with around 3% rated as morbidly obese.

It is difficult to sustainably lose weight through diet alone; you need a combination of diet and exercise because exercise builds muscle which burns more calories which, in turn, means you can consume more calories while maintaining a given weight. In other words, once you’ve achieved your target weight, you don’t need to diet anymore. The biggest muscles are in your legs which is why running and cycling are two of the best forms of exercise for losing weight. So, if you are one of that 29%, cut those calories, pound those pavements and push those pedals. You might just save a life – your own!

Businesses have been using technology to support remote working for many years now, partly to improve flexibility and partly to control costs. Cloud computing services such as Sage Online where you can login via the internet from any location have transformed remote working, as have services such as GoToMyPC which allow users to remote control computers on an internal network. One area that has seen massive growth is video conferencing. One to one video calls have long been possible via various means ranging from Facetime to Skype, but separate software has had to be developed to host video calls between multiple people or groups. With much of the world locked down by the Covid-19 outbreak, use of this software has grown exponentially.

There are lots of platforms on the market, some with free basic versions and more capable subscription based systems. Enterprise collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams and Slack have a video conferencing feature, though there is little point in using it unless you already subscribe to the full software package. Many of the established internet giants have developed their own video conferencing Apps; examples include Google Meet, Skype Business, Amazon Chime, GoToMeeting and Cisco Webex. There also a few new kids on the block like BlueJeans and Appear. in but the app which has really caught the global imagination is Zoom.

Zoom has been popular for years in the corporate world, but the Coronavirus outbreak has launched it into the stratosphere. It works across phones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers (you’ll need a webcam if using a desktop) and is compatible with Android, iOS and Windows operating systems. You can either download the app onto your device or simply go to the webpage to access a meeting. Zoom is very simple to use, just set up a meeting at a specific time and the system will generate a meeting ID and password.

Forward those two codes and the time to the intended participants and they just need to enter them on their device to join the meeting.

The basic version is free and offers unlimited one to one meetings and group meetings with up to 100 participants, though these have a

40-minute time limit. For people who need greater functionality or unlimited group meetings there’s Zoom Pro which offers the ability to give 24-hour presentations and manage users. There’s also Zoom Business which can host meetings with up to 300 participants. Where there are say 20 participants on in a meeting, it helps to a bigger screen and it is straightforward to utilise your TV using an HDMI lead or wireless connection if you have a Smart TV. You can also mute users so only the speaker appears on screen at any time.

The range of businesses that are using Zoom to carry on under the lockdown is astonishing.

Gyms and personal trainers hold online classes, bars have virtual Happy Hours and dating sites offer virtual dates. Friends and family can meet up remotely or even have online quiz nights and, in the world of public services, teachers use it to hold online lessons and MPs have taken parliament online.

The question is, why has Zoom come to dominate the market when there are so many other similar apps out there? There is something about the internet that galvanises the herd instinct in society and so creates the tech giants of today. That is why Google dominates search, Facebook controls social media and Amazon is the king of online shopping. The same outcome seems to be developing in the previously niche sector of video conferencing and Zoom is certainly reaping the rewards. At one stage, its market value exceeded that of all the world’s airlines put together and it has even earned its own place in the English language. We Zoom in to a meeting in the same way we Google something we want to know more about.

Cardio Health: Keep it Up by going Low Physical fitness has several components; these include muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, body composition and cardiovascular endurance. The latter two in this list have had a lot of publicity recently as a result of the Coronavirus epidemic and, as a result, you may have been wondering how to improve your own cardiovascular status and body fat ratio?

Perhaps you’ve tried to go out running, joined an online HIIT class or even got involved with the kids 9am P.E. session, only to find all the jumping and high impact activity overwhelming for your current fitness level. Maybe you have a health or physical condition that makes high

impact fitness activity difficult.

Some of us will be recovering from post viral fatigue issues and other illnesses, so a gentler alternative is needed that still works towards the same goals - and that alternative could be LISS! LISS stands for Low Intensity Steady State cardio and, as the name describes, it is a low intensity cardiovascular activity, performed over a prolonged period of time (30-90 minutes), at a constant pace or state. The activity itself could be anything that can be maintained in this manner such as swimming, cycling, rowing, or using cardio equipment such as an elliptical trainer or spin bike, but since the majority of us don’t have private

swimming pools or home gyms, the easiest method right now is walking or hiking which most of us will have easy access to.

You will still need to raise your heart rate enough to feel slightly breathless and warm, so a meandering stroll or stop/start walks with a curious dog won’t quite cut it. In order to fully gain from the fat burning and cardiovascular benefits of LISS training, you’ll need to be able to maintain the pace consistently for the amount of time you’ve set yourself. It’s also an opportunity to get out amongst nature and enjoy better air quality, which is proven to boost cardiovascular wellbeing.

Now more than ever before, many of us are considering our wellbeing and physical fitness in a way that finally transcends aesthetics. I’ve harped on about this before, but it’s a point worth repeating again and again and again…

I’ve been a wellbeing enthusiast for over 25 years now and have gone through many phases with my own health and fitness according to the seasons of life.

Throughout this time, the one thing I’ve always maintained is the fundamental belief that what you do with your body and what you put in it are key elements to maintaining personal vitality, even if I’ve ignored my own advice on more than one

occasion. Therefore, the difficult part, and perhaps the most important aspect to maintain, is balance!

If you have only ever associated wellbeing and fitness with the way you look, the chances are you have fallen off the training bandwagon too many times to mention. It’s also worth pointing out that looking like you’re in shape and being healthy are two entirely different things. For instance, a swimwear model may look incredible, but what they had to do to prepare for the photo shoot isn’t advisable; for instance, they may have severely dehydrated their body in order to show muscle definition. A body builder may have injected

steroids to increase their muscle mass and the pursuit of thinness can border on near starvation.

None of these examples can in any way be considered healthy!

Developing a functional body with a strong immune system is something to strive for far more than just the way you look. This state of being involves a range of elements that all need to be in sync. Whilst maintaining physical fitness is certainly part of this, your body also relies on having had enough sleep, a balanced nutritious diet and maintaining manageable stress levels to be truly strong, both inside and out. If ever there was a time and opportunity to educate yourself on these matters, it is now!

Classy Convertibles Summer is here and the lockdown is being gradually lifted; now is the time to be buying a classic convertible.

Convertibles, as opposed to roadsters, are all about style and comfort with enough space for four adults, so I’m concentrating on the soft top versions of midsized saloon cars rather than hatchbacks or GTs. I’m setting a budget of £10k but, remember, there are bargains to be had right now so make sure you shop around.

Mercedes E-Class Convertible The replacement for the CLK was launched in 2010 and is much better looking than the staid saloon car on which it is based. Sharp as Paul Smith suit, comfortable as an S-Class and with all the goodies of a normal E-Class, it has all the practicality of an everyday driver with buckets of glamour. It also has all the engine options of the saloon including 2.1 litre and 3.0 litre diesels and a range of turbocharged petrol engines.

Although it sits on the road nicely, it is not a sporty driver, and for this reason I would opt for the 3.0 litre diesel, badged as the E350 CDI. With 265bhp and a tidal wave of torque, it surges to 62mph in 6.3 seconds while still managing 50mpg on a run.

Haggle hard and you should be able to get a 2013 post facelift car with sensible mileage within our budget.

BMW 3-Series Convertible BMW’s iconic 3-Series has always been especially desirable in convertible form. For our budget we’re looking at a 5th generation car, manufactured up to 2013. Unusually, this version had a folding metal roof – safer and more practical but to my eye it looks a little ungainly with the roof up, though it is a real head turner with it down. Like the Merc, it has a big range of engines available, including the mighty V8 M3 version. The Beemer is well equipped, refined and comfortable, but with sharp handling and strong performance from all the engines. With a driver’s car like this, it makes sense to go for a more powerful engine – the turbine smooth 3.0 litre V6 petrol kicks out 272bhp and delivers 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds, not to mention a reasonable 35mpg. A 2012 model with sub 80,000 miles on it should come in comfortably under budget.

Volvo C70 Cabriolet Think of this super-safe Swedish marque and you’re unlikely to picture a convertible, yet the sleek and stylish C70 Cabriolet stayed in production for 16 years up until 2013. The second generation really is a good-looking car,

particularly with the roof down, and it is spacious, well equipped and very comfortable. It’s a Volvo, so of course it’s safe too, with numerous airbags and a pop-up rollover hoop. While the ride is supple, the handling is decidedly stodgy and the uninspiring 2.0 litre diesel hardly sets the world on fire – make sure you go for the D4 version with 175bhp. This is a car for cruising around in in style, safety and comfort. Very well built and endlessly reliable, you can pass it on to the kids when you’re done with it. £10k puts you in a pristine 2013 model with under 60,000 miles on the clock.

Audi A4 Convertible Audi stopped making the A4 Convertible in 2009, opting to offer a soft top version of the A3 hatchback instead.

This is a shame because the A4 was a real style icon – its predecessor, the A80 Cabriolet, is now an emerging classic. With understated styling and interior, the Audi is simply cool and always will be. Audi never made a lairy performance version of its convertible; most of the later versions were powered by diesel engines. Go for the 3.0 litre V6 TDi with 230bhp and 150mph performance. It’s got sleek styling, an uncluttered interior, a firm ride, taut handling and it’s cool. I found a 2009 car with a ridiculous 11k miles on it for just £8500.
