TASTES SO GOOD

GRANNY’S XMAS PUDDING

The stout in this recipe will add the moisture to the pudding and the cocoa powder makes the pudding look lovely and dark.

Ingredients: 1oz mixed peel 1oz ground almonds 2 medium sized eggs ¼ teaspoon almond essence 2 teaspoons brandy 1 can of stout 2 teaspoons cocoa powder ¼ teaspoon nutmeg ¼ teaspoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon mixed spice 4oz plain flour 4oz breadcrumbs 4oz beef suet 4oz brown sugar 4oz raisins 4oz sultanas 4oz glace cherries 1 grated lemon rind ½ apple grated ½ carrot grated

Equipment: 2 pint pyrex bowl, pudding bowl, clean tea towel or pudding cloth.

Method: Place all the dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix together. Add the eggs and the brandy and mix then pour in the stout gradually and keep stirring until your mixture is the consistency of a loose cake mix. Grease your pudding bowl with a little butter and pour in the pudding mix. Cover with foil and then a tea towel or pudding cloth and tie it to the top of the bowl, this is to prevent any water getting in. Place in a large boiling pan and fill with water ¾ of the way up the side of the bowl. Boil on a moderate heat for 6 hours keep topping up the water with boiled kettle water if the level starts to drop. When the pudding is ready turn it out and leave to cool. These puddings can be stored wrapped in foil from now until Christmas, to reheat just place the pudding back in the bowl and boil for another 2 hours on Christmas day. Can be served with a sprinkling of icing sugar on the top or pour on ¼ brandy and light for a flaming Christmas pudding

LUCY’S RECIPE CORNER

REINDEER MARSHMALLOWS

INGREDIENTS * Large Marshmallows * Pretzels (for Antlers) * Small Red candy sweets * Ready to roll white and black

icing * 100g milk chocolate (Need to add string to hook to Christmas Tree)

Method 1. Line a large board with greaseproof paper.

2. Melt the chocolate – ask an adult to help - and leave to cool slightly 3. Dip each marshmallow into the melted chocolate covering the base and edges. Place on greaseproof paper and leave in fridge to set.

4. Take out the fridge and turn upside down, add a drop of

melted chocolate to base of every marshmallow and add two pretzels to either side to make antlers.

5. Flip them back over and return to fridge to set, meanwhile make small icing eyes.

6. Add the eyes and a sweetie red nose using a drop of melted chocolate and return to fridge to set. Thread string around antlers and hang from the tree – irresistable!

SIMPLE ROASTED VEGETABLE SALAD Perfect for using up any root vegetables you have that might be looking a little sad in the fridge.

INGREDIENTS 2 medium carrots, peeled 2 medium sized potatoes, peeled 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled

1 tbsp coconut oil 2 cloves garlic, crushed Salt and pepper to taste 100g mixed salad leaves 1 tbsp balsamic glaze

Method 1. Line a tray with baking paper and heat the oven to 180 degrees.

4. Spread the vegetables over the baking tray and cook for 60 minutes or until ready.

2. Chop the vegetables into small cubes and add into a bowl.

5. Remove from the oven to cool.

3. Add the coconut oil, crushed garlic, salt and pepper and stir well so all the veggies are coated.

6. Arrange the salad leaves in a serving dish.

7. Place the vegetables over the top and add the balsamic glaze before serving.

RUNNING & FITNESS COACH

HOW TO BECOME A BETTER RUNNER Running is the one sport that people think that they don’t have to worry about technique, running is simple, isn’t it? You just put your trainers on and run - if only that was true.

By improving your running technique, you can improve as a runner by running more efficiently and subsequently running faster. Poor technique can lead to you becoming tired more easily as you are not running efficiently and this can lead to injury if you have bad form.

As a running coach, I do not believe in changing a runner’s running style as we all have our own unique way of running and there is no perfect running form. However, I do believe that by making the following small adjustments you can become a better runner.

Here are my top tips that will help you develop good running form: Posture You should run tall and in the direction that you are travelling in, your shoulders should be relaxed, back and down, try running with your shoulders bunched up to your ears, this should feel uncomfortable and unnatural.

You would soon tire if you continued to run like this over any distance. Relax your shoulders and keep your head high, look ahead of you with your jaw relaxed and your mouth open.

Arms: To see how important arms are when you run try running 10m with your arms

above your head or behind your back. By doing this hopefully you will see how out of control and uncoordinated you may feel and how your arms balance you. Bend your arms at the elbow, about a 90-degree angle and drive your elbow back, as though you are hammering a nail into a wall. This stops the arms crossing your body and consequently twisting your torso. If you run with a strong arm drive your body will look for symmetry, therefore your arms should match your legs, and it’s easier to drive our arms back when you are tired than driving the knee up but by doing this, trust me, your legs will follow.

Hands: Your hands do not want to be clenched into a fist, they need to be relaxed; clenching them wastes too much energy.

Imagine that you have a budgie in each hand and you are gently carrying the budgies so that they don’t get squashed, if you clench your fists you will kill the budgies; remember “Don’t kill the budgies!” In other words, keep your hands relaxed and slightly cupped.

Hips: If you run with high hips this will keep you in the tall upright posture that you should be aiming for, before you run just tuck your tailbone (your bottom) in. This pushes the hips forward and enables you to run tall. Imagine that you have a bowl of water in your pelvis; the idea is that you don’t spill the water so keep your hips stable and balanced when running, try not to leak any water out of the bowl.

Foot strike: There is no right way or wrong way to land on your feet, generally as long as you land underneath your center of gravity and don’t over stride this will help improve your leg turnover, so imagine that you are “popping” off the ground.

Try these adjustments next time you run, work from the head downwards and spot check how you are doing periodically.

As you increase your miles and as you start to tire keep a check list in your head, where are my shoulders? What are my arms doing, keep my head up high and, above all, run relaxed.

TEHIDY HOLIDAY PARK, CORNWALL Tehidy is a small village in Cornwall, near Portreath, St Ives and the coast. It is a magnificent part of the world and a memorable family holiday awaits you at Tehidy Holiday Park. “I have ploughed everything I have made back into the holiday park,” explains director Richard Barnes, who purchased the five-acre site 10 years ago and runs it with his family. “It was pretty run down then and I set about updating it, even adding tarmac roads.”

We speak during the height of the holiday season when he has 350 guests staying on site: camping, static caravans and in his selection of self-catering holiday cottages. “We keep being asked for larger cottages so we are renovating another one at the moment which will have all the bells and whistles.”

It is a value for money offering and guests even benefit from wi-fi. There’s a play area and the site has been awarded a David Bellamy Gold Conservation Award, which acknowledges the mix of flower beds, Cornish hedges, trees, hedgerows, a small orchard, wildlife areas and wild flowers, scattered with wild strawberries for little fingers to find. We stay in Lavender Cottage, a two-bed semidetached stone built bungalow, with a slate roof. It provides comfortable accommodation for four. There are five in the Saunders family but this doesn’t pose a problem because our children quite happily share a room. Harriett (6) and Heidi (4) each have their own bed while Henry (1) sleeps in his travel cot, which fits in between their beds

without a problem. Caroline and I take the master bedroom with its double bed and doors onto the patio. “The county’s finest beaches are just minutes away,” says Richard. He is absolutely right. The first one we visit is at Portreath, 10 minutes away. It’s an overcast day but that doesn’t matter, we enjoy the whole morning on the beach, paddling and making sandcastles and then have a packed lunch. We have to work our day around Henry’s sleep patterns and after lunch he likes a nap so most days we all pile into the car and head on road trips taking in St Ives and Penzance. At St Ives the weather takes a turn for the worse and Harriett and I have left our coats at the ranch but we brave it. We enjoy a walk around the seaside town and even make some pebble sculptures on the beach. We are all thoroughly sodden but it doesn’t matter we are having a great time. It’s such an arty place with so much character from its narrow roads and

historic architecture. Penzance is bigger and home to national retailers but still a good place to visit. We discover the best beach of all on our last day. It’s Porthtowan. A beautiful sandy beach and some great waves.

We spend the whole day at Porthtowan, paddling, messing about in the sand and watching the lifeguards manage a huge crowd of surfers. There’s also a play area and some shops so an ideal day out for the young family. For those of us not hardy enough to swim in the sea, Kernow Hydro, a wonderful warm saltwater pool can be found at Portreath. Owner, Fiona established it a couple of years ago and has just celebrated paying off her £50,000 loan.

The children especially enjoy splashing around in the warm water. After our swim we sit in the café and tuck into some of the best pasties we have eaten. A great experience. As always Cornwall creates some wonderful memories.

TIS’ THE SEASON…

The run up to Christmas can be one of the busiest and most stressful times of year, with countless hours of present shopping, nativity play preparation, writing and posting cards, and attending drinks parties. Plus, to top it all, you are also required to look glamorous and flit about in something sequinned with photo-perfect hair and makeup at the drop of a hat. I hear all the stories about the frantic rushing and pressure of the party season, but I also adore spending my time making people feel great about the way they look. With this in mind, I think I am well placed to offer some advice on how to “survive” the Christmas party season! And who knows, I could even help with last minute gift ideas for the children’s schoolteacher. After all, how many bottles of wine and boxes of chocolates must they receive? Instead, why not club together with other mums and get them a voucher for a de-stressing massage or relaxing manicure?

With a well-executed plan of treatments and at-home care, you can start December with glowing and healthy skin; ready to face all the social events the season will throw at you. We will also look at the finishing touches – think of it a little like decorating the Christmas tree – with manicures, lashes and tanning, but first it is all about laying the foundations.

Facials and peels are a fabulous way to prepare your skin for the season ahead. Look to have something that focuses on brightening, exfoliation will be key for this so a facial including microdermabrasion or hydroxy acids will get great results. If

getting to the salon is out of the question what can you do at home to make sure your skin is in tip-top shape? Here is a short list of skin ‘best practice’ you can apply to your regime: 1) Wash skin twice in the morning and twice in the evening. The first wash will remove dirt and makeup, the second will actually get in your pores to clean your skin.

2) Exfoliate to remove dead skin, but ensure you use the right product for your skin, and don’t overdo it. Scrubbing away at angry and red skin will not make you look glowing and festive.

Instead you will probably look more like Rudolph.

3) Wear a moisturiser with SPF50 sunscreen every day – even in winter – to protect skin from harmful ‘ageing rays’ all year round.

4) Don’t fiddle with blemishes – you will just spread the bacteria around your face and you may wake up the following day with multiple spots instead of just one.

Once the foundations are laid you have such a variety of finishing touches to choose from.

One of my personal must-haves is fake tan, whether that is an athome application (there are some fantastic options out there now) or a professional spray tan, it just helps me feel more confident in my little black dress!

It then should be nails; again, either at-home or salon I always do a little pedicure as my feet have been tucked away in boots for months! Plus, it wouldn’t be Christmas for me without a red sparkly colour on my fingers.

Finally look at lashes; you could choose strip or lash extensions or my personal favourite a lash-lift, which will really get your eyes party ready. Some glitter and shimmer to finish your look with the amazing selection of make-up available will have you looking and feeling like you can breeze through this party season!

However you decide to prepare, remember to relax and enjoy it, that is what Christmas is really about after all.

There are hundreds of species of Holly but the English Holly is our most common native evergreen and is often found among ancient oaks or as a marker in hedges indicating a boundary. A species that is commonly used for decorations during the Christmas season, holly has been used for centuries as part of pagan celebrations in the winter. Plants are characterised by glossy dark green leaves, many with spiky leaves, and once pollinated by insects, female flowers develop into red berries which remain throughout winter.

Holly shrubs are best planted in spring before they begin growing, in full sun. They respond well to pruning – use the cuttings in the holiday season to decorate your home! Choose your location carefully as Hollies can grow from 5-60ft tall dependent on the variety.

RENAULT KOLEOS 2017 REVIEW The Renault Koleos won’t rock your world, but it’s a decent enough SUV. It looks a bit too like many other SUVs out there – most noticeably the Skoda Kodiaq, but it’s an impressive car, nonetheless. I got behind the wheel of the flagship trim level – the Signature Nav, which has a generous amount of Kit, comprising big 19-inch alloy wheels, a sat-nav, a touchscreen and leather-bound seats. The car’s infotainment system, accessed via the touchscreen is easy and self-explanatory to use, and the Renault is practical, offering cubby holes and four USB slots. What’s more, the Koleos is endowed with good quality soft-touch plastics and the hide wrapping the seats and steering wheel is top notch.

The top-of-the-tree 2.0 dCi 175 AWD X-Tronic Koleos I drove really is the bee’s-knees, in terms of out-and-out technology and cabin refinement. The layout is well thought out for driver and passengers, and room is more than respectable. The wheelbase is the same as the X-Trail’s at 2,705mm – and this equates to awesome legroom.

Better still, the Koleos’ load area is 29 litres bigger than the Nissan’s – measuring 579 litres.

Alas, take a tape-measure to the similar-looking Skoda Kodiaq and the Czech-made car’s boot is 630 litres. Oh well, you can’t have everything. Strangely the Gallic car brand isn’t providing the Koleos with a seven-seat option, though. This could be a deal-breaker as Skoda’s Kodiaq does. Renault gets away with it, however, by explaining that you can always go for the Grand Scenic if you need all those seats.

On the road, the Renault Koleos is well-behaved and easy to like.

Zero to 62mph arrives in 9.5 seconds and the top speed is 125mph, so the car has plenty of ‘go’ for motorway commutes or for overtakes on lesser roads.

The Koleos has 174 horses under its ample bonnet to provide such power, and this helps tug the car along, even with five-up and a fully laden boot.

The auto ‘box isn’t bad, even though it’s a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This means the transmission shifts through a constant range of ratios.

Alas, CVTs don’t always work as seamlessly as they should, resulting in a rather jerky driving experience. Nevertheless, I’m pleased to report Renault has stuck an advanced CVT into the Koleos that uses technology to copy a sequential ‘box.

This makes the car painless to operate.

The Koleos’ ride is super comfy, with its soft suspension making you all but forget the existence of potholes. But the squidgy springs don’t wreck the handling; if anything, the French SUV comes across as predictable and steady. The Koleos I drove had all-wheel-drive, so I also tested it off-road. Because the

car has good ground clearance I could drive it over stones and hummocks without fear of ripping bits off the underneath of the Koleos. Furthermore, the Renault grips well in mud and anything not resembling tarmac.

It’s no Land Rover, but it’s a great asset to have if you live in the sticks, or you plan on lugging a tin-tent to a grassy caravan park or suchlike.

The Koleos is a car that is roomy and well-appointed. It also flies the luxury SUV flag for Renault.

This means it could attract fresh customers to the brand who are looking for an SUV with a bit of French flair.

FEAR OF FRAUD

Q: What’s worse than having your life savings stolen from you?

A: People finding out you’ve been defrauded. It’s hard to believe, but for many people it seems that the shame of being defrauded is harder to admit to than dealing with being tricked in the first place.

According to a report by the Financial Conduct Authority, over a third of over-55s – the people most likely to be targeted by fraudsters - said they would not admit to being scammed.

More worryingly, over a fifth of those who had been the victim of scammers said that they had not reported it.

What’s most surprising is we’re not talking small sums of money here. Over the past few years I’ve spoken to people who’ve been conned in to handing over their life savings. The ‘vishing’ or ‘courier fraud’ scams have seen vulnerable people tricked in to transferring or handing over sums averaging around £25,000 plus.

I spoke to one woman who had transferred over £100,000. Sadly, the money was not recovered.

Boiler room (investment) scams can net even higher sums, while fraudsters who have targeted people selling their houses by pretending to be lawyers can walk away with the entire profits of the sale. Even small businesses are not immune. I spoke to one company that had lost £300,000 in a similar scam.

Usually I take a light-hearted look at money matters or consumer

rights in this column. But when it comes to scams, it’s no joke.

And the best way we can avoid them is to learn how they work – and speak to older or vulnerable people who are most likely to be targeted. Here are the two main money scams doing the rounds.

Vishing/smishing/courier fraud.

Ignore the names, this is a typical confidence trick rebooted for the modern age. The fraudster calls, texts or emails pretending to be from a bank or an authorative organisation. They tell you your account has been compromised and you need to transfer the money out urgently. They may tell you to call the number on your card, make an online transfer, hand the card to a courier or even go in to the bank. The techniques vary but at heart, just remember this one thing.

Your bank will never ask you to transfer money out of your account. Ever. Nor will it ask for your passwords. Be suspicious.

Boiler room fraud. Named after their aggressive ‘sales’ techniques and environment, these fake businesses browbeat you on the phone in to investing in ‘sure things’, like land in developing countries or high-

yield foreign shares. They wear customers down on the phone to get them to sign up.

Fraudsters exchange victims’ names with each other too to retarget them. Four words to remember: hang up the phone.

Horribly, fraudsters often go back for a ‘second hit’ as people often hand over more cash if they think it will help them get their original loss back. And here’s the really important thing to bear in mind. The people who are being scammed aren’t stupid.

I’ve heard tapes of fraudsters in action. Sometimes they’ve targeted people repeatedly over days, pretending to be different people, using incredibly convincing arguments. Fraud works because good fraudsters are extraordinarily skilled at what they do. And anyone can be a victim.

But we can beat them by talking about these subjects – and not suffering in silence.
