Tastes so good...

PULLED PORK SANDWICHES

As the temperature drops, we find ourselves wanting more easy to make, comfort food. Not only is this dish simple to create is also tastes delicious. Perfect for quiet Autumn nights in.

Ingredients for 12 servings

Equipment: Large slow-cooker, large bowl, forks

1 medium onion (chopped)

Method: Mix together the onion, ketchup, brown sugar, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, paprika, mustard and then add the salt and the pepper. Once you have done this, pour the sauce mixture into the slow cooker pot and add the pork, making sure to also coat it in sauce.

½ cup of ketchup ¼ cup of packed brown sugar ¼ cup of tomato paste 2tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1/3 cup of cider vinegar 2tbp. sweet paprika 1 ½ tsp. Salt 1 ¼ tsp. ground black pepper 4lb boneless pork shoulder 12 buns or ciabatta rolls

Pop the lid on top of the slow cooker and cook the pork. Do this on a low setting (one which the manufacturer recommends). Cook until the pork is tender for between 8-10 hours.

When it is finally cooked, move the pork from the slow cooker into a large bowl. Change the temperature setting on the cooker to ‘high’, cover the pot and then cook the sauce. Do this until boiling point is reached to make the mixture thicker.

Pull the pork apart into shreds (you can use 2 forks for this). Then put the shredded pork back into the slow cooker, mixing it into the sauce. Cover once again and cook on high.

Finally, once warmed through, spoon mixture into buns and serve.

Mulled Wine

An easy mulled wine recipe for the festive season, brimming with Christmassy spice. Don’t bother with expensive wine - a cheap red will work beautifully and no one will ever know the difference!

Eat, Drink and be merry!

 Preparation time: less than 30 mins



Cooking time: less than 10 mins Ingredients for 4- 6 servings 1 bottle dry red wine 2 (5cm) cinnamon sticks 1 dessertspoon whole cloves 1 dessertspoon whole allspice 1 large piece orange rind (avoid the pith) 1 large piece lemon rind (avoid the pith) 2-4 tablespoons demerara sugar, (or to taste)



Serves: 4- 6 adults Method Pour the wine into a heavy saucepan over medium heat, and add the cinnamon, cloves, allspice, lemon rind and orange rind. Heat gently, but don't bring to the boil. Stir in 2 tablespoons of the sugar, and once dissolved, taste to see if you'd like the wine sweeter and add more if so (take care not to burn your mouth as this will be hot!).

Keep hot on medium to low heat for 20 minutes to let the flavours infuse the wine.

Strain your mulled wine into heatproof glasses or mugs and serve at once, perhaps accompanied by mince pies or just enjoy by the fireside.

Mortgages Is now the perfect time to cut the cost of your mortgage? Rates are at historic lows - for the first time a two-year-fix is below 1% and a ten year fix is 2.39%. Many people can cut their mortgage costs by £1,000s. Yet after Brexit many are asking if could it get even cheaper.

My mailbag’s been rammed with messages from nervous mortgageholders wondering whether they should do anything with their mortgage due to the uncertain economy right now. I don’t have a crystal ball and don’t know what the future holds, but in short here’s my analysis on the situation…

1) Will fixes get cheaper? The rate at which fixes are set is based on complex 'long-term City swap rates'. And the markets' gloom has pushed those down, so fix rates could (there's a lot of crystal-ball gazing here) trickle down a touch further.

2) What about variable rates?

There’s certainly pressure on them to drop, Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of England, has indicated cuts that may happen, though the last meeting of the bank it kept them on hold.

So should people wait?

The big picture... mortgages are at historically cheap rates already. If you can slash £1,000s off your cost and get peace of mind that you can afford it (and if you're worried about uncertainty, go for a longer fix), then do it.

Yes, there's a chance it could get even cheaper, but if you're bagging something that's easily affordable, that safety and certainty has a value too. Playing the market is never a sure-fire win.

And big savings are possible, such as Kperat’s, who emailed me: "Following your email we did some research, fixed at 1.24% for 2 yrs, reduced term to 13 yrs without paying much more a month. Will be

saving about £20,000, even after fees. THANKS." Just how cheap are mortgages?

HSBC is offering a 0.99% two-yearfix, though you’ll need a good credit score, to be borrowing less than 65% of your house’s value and pay a huge fee of £1,499. Yet see this is an example of the type of rates available. At 90% of your house’s value you could get 2.49% fee-free for two years, or if you want to fix for longer, there are five-year-fixes in the 2%s too.

So examine what your rate is now; many people are on their lender’s standard variable rate, the rate you go to when a fix or discount ends. So for Barclays, RBS, Halifax, NatWest and most Nationwide customers, it’s around 4%, though this is likely to drop if there is a rate cut. And just remember, every 1% point you cut off your mortgage is around £80/month less per £1,000 of mortgage.

How to find the cheapest mortgages For easy benchmarking, to see what’s out there, start with a comparison site that includes all deals, including ‘direct only’, those that aren’t offered by broker. These include my Mortgage Comparison at www.mse.me/mortgagebestbuys or sites such as TotallyMoney.com.

Yet it’s not just the rate that counts: these days getting accepted isn’t easy. Both your credit score and whether you’re deemed able to afford the mortgage count. (The latter is often calculated as if interest rates are far higher than they are, so you can still pay if rates do rise.)

Matching your characteristics to available mortgages is something a good mortgage broker can do that you can’t do yourself. But do ask if the broker will check all deals available to them and not just a panel of lenders. Also, check how much using a broker

will cost and ensure you use a qualified one. Some phone-only brokers such as www.LandC. co.uk are fee-free but if you want face-to-face help, ask friends for a local broker recommendation or use www.Unbiased.co.uk or www.

VouchedFor.co.uk to find one.

Don’t ignore the fees The smaller your mortgage, the bigger the impact of fees, especially on smaller mortgages. A good way to compare mortgages is to divide the fee across the discount or fixed period.

So a £1,200 fee on a two-year (i.e., 24-month) deal is £50 a month – add that to the monthly repayment.

And if you use www.mse.me/ mortgage bestbuys to compare, the ‘total cost’ function does this automatically for you.

Fix or variable rate?

The advantage of a fix is you get price and budgeting certainty that the rate won't move for a set time.

Variable deals move with UK interest rates – and sometimes just at the provider's whim. Generally, you pay a little more to fix, but not much. Ask yourself how much you think rates will rise over the period. If safety's what counts for you, err on the side of fixing, and fixing for longer.

Got savings? They could get you a better mortgage For this, you need to find your current loan-to-value (LTV), the proportion of the value you're borrowing. E.g., £80k on a £100k property is 80% LTV. At every 5% LTV threshold from 95% down to 60%, deals tend to get better, so a little extra can have a big impact on your rate.

For example, if you've a £150,000 home, and want a £137,000 remortgage, that's 91% LTV, and the top 5yr fix is 4.49%. Yet use £2,000 of savings to reduce the borrowing, and you'd then be at 90% LTV – where the top 5yr fix is 2.84%, saving c. £1,600/year in payments.

Too old To WorK, Too young To rETirE There comes a point in all of our lives where we feel too old to work but too young to retire. The daily grind is taking its toll; we feel stuck on the treadmill of work, plodding along without going anywhere, unable to get off because we simply cannot afford to retire. Sound familiar? It’s a sad reality that many of the people I meet are in exactly the same boat and there is a whole generation of people who have lost their purpose, passion and joie de vivre.

So are you too old to work but too young to retire?

The truth is, that feeling of being stuck in purgatory is self-imposed. And I don’t apologise for saying so. That feeling boils down to one important factor- you just haven’t found the right job! I firmly believe that once you find your passion in life, whatever your age, work no longer feels liked a daily punishment, instead it becomes something you live, eat and breathe and love doing.

But what if you really are too old to work? Well I’m here to tell you that you are never too old to work!

Don’t believe me? Well sit back and listen to the tale of Barbara Knickbocker-Beskind.

When Barbara Beskind (let’s drop the ‘Knickerbocker’, if you’ll excuse the pun) was a child she found her passion in life. As a child of the war, she knew that being a resourceful problem solver was a life skill. Money was incredibly tight during the Depression in America, and her father’s redundancy from the FBI further compounded the family’s financial plight. But this didn’t stop them getting on with living. Her and her family made everything they needed, except shoes and glasses, and Barbara made all of her own toys. As a child, Barbara knew that her passion was to use her creativity to invent and innovate.

In a modern, post-feminist, context, I have no doubt that Barbara would’ve gone to university, studied to be an engineer and had a truly fulfilling career. But this was nearly 70 years ago; Beskind’s Careers Councillor told her, in no uncertain terms, that women were not accepted by engineering schools, so Barbara joined the army and became

an occupational therapist instead.

I’m not saying that Barbara didn’t have a rewarding career, but I’m certain that she always carried a sense of regret with her. To have found her passion but to have not embraced it is a saddening thought and one that I fear so many of us can empathise with.

But Barbara’s tale doesn’t end on a dismal note; quite the contrary in fact. Barbara didn’t think she was too old to work, but she did think she was too young to retire. At 89 years old she saw an advertisement for Silicon Valley based IDEO, who were recruiting for someone to add diversity to their design team. At 91, Barbara is now a muchloved member of the team, offering feedback to designers who are working on products for the elderly, and sharing her own design prototypes with her colleagues.

Barbara says “Age is not a barrier to performance.

Live life as an adventure and expect change and endorse it, embrace it”. Good on you Barbara! I don’t think you are ever too old to work. Barbara, a nonagenarian, suffers from a macular degeneration and uses modified ski poles to walk, but she’s still doing it. Once you find something you are deeply passionate about, your life will have purpose and you won’t want to stop. I urge you to take the best leap of your life- follow your dreams and love what you do.

Report reveals vulnerable patients not being served by the NHS But what can you do if you feel poorly served by the Health Service? We investigate According to a recent report by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, vulnerable patients are being sent home alone, afraid and unable to cope and in some cases without their relatives or carers being told.

The report highlights cases investigated by the Ombudsman service where people have been discharged from hospital before they are fit to leave or without making sure they can cope on their return home. One woman in her 80s was discharged from hospital to an empty house, in a confused state with a catheter still in place. Another hospital sent an 85-year-old woman with dementia home alone at 11pm, without informing her family, despite the fact she was unable to look after herself. Her daughter visited her the next morning to find that her mother had been left with no food, drink and bedding, unable to care for herself or get to the toilet.

Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman Julie Mellor said: “Poor planning, coordination and communication between hospital staff and between health and social care services are failing patients, compromising their safety and dignity.

“Health and social care leaders must work harder to uncover why ten years of guidance to prevent unsafe discharge is not being followed, causing misery and distress for patients, families and carers.”

So what can you do if you need to complain?

The NHS has a constitution that sets out your rights as a patient.

There are time limits within

which to make a complaint. The time limit for using the official complaints procedure is 12 months. The time limits for legal action depend on the sort of legal action you are taking. Check what are the time limits are for each course of action that you’re thinking about.

It doesn’t cost you anything to complain using the NHS complaints procedure. If you want to take legal action, you will need the advice of a specialist solicitor, and legal aid isn’t available for most cases of clinical negligence or personal injury.

What to do first: Every NHS organisation has a complaints procedure. If you want to complain about an NHS service – such as a hospital, GP or dentist – ask the service for a copy of their complaints procedure, which will explain what you need to do.

You may choose to make a complaint in writing, by email (or through Resolver) or by speaking to them. If you speak to them, they may be able to resolve your concerns without you having to go through the formal complaints process. This is called a local resolution. It aims to resolve complaints quickly, and most cases are resolved at this stage. However, if you don’t feel comfortable raising your concerns directly (or your problem wasn’t resolved) and you would still like to make a formal complaint, follow the NHS complaints process.

You may make a complaint to either the organisation that provided your healthcare or the organisation that commissioned that NHS service. The commissioning body will be either the local clinical commissioning group (CCG) for hospital care, or NHS England for GP, dental,

pharmacy and optical services.

Time limit for NHS complaints You should make your complaint as soon as possible. The time limit for a complaint is normally: • 12 months from the date the event happened, or • 12 months from the date you first became aware of it Patient Advice and Liaison Services (PALS) You can get help and advice from Patient Advice and Liaison Services (PALS), whose officers are available in most hospitals.

They offer confidential advice, support and information on health-related matters to patients, their families and their carers.

NHS Complaints Independent Advocacy Service Individual local authorities have a legal duty to organise independent advocacy services to provide support for people who are making, or thinking of making, a complaint about their NHS care or treatment.

Contact your local PALS, complaints manager or local authority for information about how this service is provided in your area.

Parliamentary & Health Ombudsman If you are unhappy with the outcome of your complaint you can refer the matter to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, who is independent of the NHS and government.

Volkswagen Golf GTi

The splendid VW Golf GTI has been in the motoring arena for over four decades, and its appeal is still red-hot.

The word ‘hot’ is significant here, because the Golf GTI is the original ‘hot-hatch’ and it has generated many copycats.

This obviously means the VW Golf GTI isn’t the only one in the hothatchback division anymore, and it has to try even harder to thrash the (relatively) young new comers that try and knock it down from its perch.

Curiously, key adversaries come from inside Volkswagen Group’s inner sanctum. These motors include Skoda’s Octavia vRS and SEAT’s Leon Cupra. Both cars are brilliant in every respect, apart from the absence of the ‘VW Golf GTI’ badge. And, to be blunt, they produce comparable performance for less cash. But, that’s because they are not the celebrity that is the Golf GTI – and Volkswagen knows motorists will fork out more for that reason alone.

The modern day Golf GTI is just such awesome fun behind the wheel. It is a grin-making motor that makes every mile travelled an utter delight. Toss the Golf along motorways and it stays as planted as a 100-year-old oak tree at 70mph. The 2.0-litre TSI 220PS five-door version, on test here, has wads of power on tap, masses of grip, alert and meticulous steering, and virtually no body roll.

Regardless of this, the suspension is efficient enough to keep the hothatch comfy. So, as well as being a champ of commuting on the straight sections, picking its way along snaky country roads and making mincemeat of tight bends

is where the VW Golf GTI really comes into its own.

Under the hood, the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, adjoined to a six-speed manual gearbox, gets you from 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds on the way to a maximum speed of 152mph. Stimulating as these numbers are, they’re accompanied by extraordinarily meagre running costs. The GTI manages an average fuel consumption of 47.1mpg, while discharging only 139g/km of CO2 emissions. This mix of parsimony and performance makes the appeal of the present Golf GTI even more delicious.

You can instantaneously tell a VW Golf GTI from a standard Golf by the larger 18-inch alloy wheels, the red styling on the lower front bumper, and the attractive roof spoiler. Mental Health

Mental health issues and debt are a marriage made in hell – and, worse, each feeds off the other. If you or someone you know is hit by this, you’re not alone. This is one of the biggest and most hidden financial problems affecting the UK. The more we talk about it, the better, so I want to take you through what’s happening and some tips if you’re affected.

we’re looking at, both are based on spending sprees, which are common with bipolar disorder and depression.

The statistics are horrific. Here are just three of them: 1) You’re four to six times more likely to have debt crisis if you’ve mental health issues. 2) Half those seeking debt help have mental health issues. 3) The treatment time for clinical depression can be 18 months longer for those with financial worries too.

- High-control account options. Go abroad and debit and credit card firms freeze your accounts if they detect unusual spending patterns. Why not allow people to voluntarily apply that to all spending?

Breaking this relationship has been a passion of mine for a long time.

So having planned it for years, a few weeks ago I launched the new Money and Mental Health Policy Institute (http://www.moneyandmentalhealth. org.uk) with a brilliant full-time team I’m funding for at least four years. The aim of this charity is simple: to reduce the number of people affected by the issue.

And that number is huge - when I’ve written about it on social media I’ve been swamped by the responses.

Here are just a couple: “I have bipolar and was given huge amounts of credit which I spent while on a manic high. I am now in so much debt there’s no way out, which has an impact on my depression.”

“When I’m in a depressed state I find that I can spend recklessly, without thinking about the bigger picture.

Having financial struggles does make you stressed, anxious and cause sleep issues, which can then all lead to further depression. It’s a vicious circle.”

What can be done about it?

Thankfully over the past decade, the financial services sector has improved its attitude and procedures when dealing with people with mental health illness once they’re already in the mire. So the Policy Institute’s focus is prevention, to come up with solutions, research them and then lobby to get them in place.

Here’s a sample of the type of ideas

- Credit freeze. Allow people to voluntarily to put a freeze at the credit reference agencies, so they can’t apply for any new credit. To unlock it would take a set time – say 30 or 90 days – giving breathing space if your decision making ability is temporarily impaired.

Then if unusual spending patterns happen, their card is cut off for a set time, say 10 weeks, unless a nominated trusted friend or mental health case worker agrees it should be unfrozen, because the high spend is, for example, just due to a house move.

Of course there are many other conditions too, such as dementia, which require other solutions. (go to http://www.moneyandmentalhealth. org.uk /join-our-research-panel/) Yet that’s all in the future. Here are some tips from it.

1. Speak to a non-profit debt help agency. If you’re in debt crisis, then www.CitizensAdvice.org. uk, www.StepChange.org, www.

NationalDebtline.org and especially www.CapUK.org can help – I say especially as it also does emotional counselling too.

2. Can you cut the interest rate? The lower it is the more of your repayments clear the actual debt. A balance transfer credit card can shift debt to 0% for 40 months.

3. Consider informing your bank. Once a lender is aware that a customer has a mental health condition, it has to make adjustments. The Lending Code says banks should consider keeping a debt in-house rather than passing it to debt collectors, and they should make court action the last resort.

to discuss carefully with a caseworker or debt counsellor.

4. You can’t be discriminated against for your mental health. In other words, if the fact you’ve declared your illness to a bank affects your ability to get other products with them, such as a mortgage, it would likely breach the Equality Act. 5. Know the early warning signs. Even when people plunge into debt, issues like depression don’t bite overnight.

Look out for tension headaches, arguments at work, back pain or bad skin. And seek help.

6. Banking control if you have bipolar.

A few banks have minor procedures to allow you to register your mental health issues and stop your overdraft going beyond a certain amount.

Bipolar disorder sufferers, who may be prone to overspending during a manic episode, could consider discussing this with their bank. It’s worth chatting through with a debt counsellor or case worker first.

7. Consider adding a note on your credit file. If you overspend when you are unwell, you can volunteer to add information on mental health problems to your credit files in what’s called a ‘notice of correction’. This alerts potential lenders so they don’t lend further credit. This can be added or removed whenever you want though.

Yet it may stop you borrowing when you are well.

8. Consider paying bills by direct debit. This can simplify your finances, helping to ensure bills get paid when you’re ill. Yet while direct debits for gas and electricity bills, home phone and broadband can save you money, home and car insurers charge you interest so annual payments better.

9. Prioritise heating and eating. Don’t simply pay those who hassle you the hardest. The debt counsellors above can help.

10. There’s no such thing as an unsolvable debt. For as long as I’ve been doing my job, I’ve never once seen a debt case that isn’t solvable. It may not be easy, it may not be quick, but I want you to know it is ALWAYS doable. If you start to sort it out, it does get better.

Broadband - Fighting for your rights Broadband providers ordered to stop misleading ads – your rights if you feel you’ve been duped With the Advertising Standards Authority ordering the broadband industry to stop advertising deals that hide how much contracts really cost, I look at how to get the best from your broadband Research by the ‘Advertising Standards Agency’ and broadcast industry regulator ‘Ofcom’ has revealed that most of us are confused about the actual cost of our broadband contracts.

It found that 80% of us could not work out the full cost of a given broadband package, while just a quarter could understand the price of a package after being shown a TV ad for it. As a result, the ASA says providers will have to display up-front costs, monthly fees, contract lengths and post-discount prices in all their marketing and advertising.

The new rules come into force at the end of October… so what can you do until then if you feel you’ve been mis-sold?

Complain!

If you’re not happy with the price you’re paying, raise the issue with your provider. They will be under no obligation to change your payment structure, but may be happy to move you to a cheaper tariff (but be aware that this might be slower and/or have a data cap on it, limiting your internet usage).

So what are the rules regarding cancelling a contract? When can

a company impose a penalty on leaving and when can’t they?

You should get a 14-day cooling-off period, depending on the type of contract, where you can leave with no extra charge.

After that, a company does have the right to say that if you’ve signed up for something that you do have to pay a termination charge. This is often the period of time you’ve been locked into the contract for.

However, if you feel you’ve been mis-sold, or you’ve been signed up without consent, you have the right to cancel without being charged.

Things need to be cleaner and clearer for the consumer to be able to better understand these situations. In addition, if a consumer is not getting the service they expect, we believe they need to be offered the opportunity to be able to cancel their contract. For example, if you’re not getting the broadband service you believed you’d signed up to, or your mobile phone’s not working, why should you be tied into a contract that you didn’t want and that is not right for you.

Help, my broadband is too slow!

Ancient copper phone lines are throttling our home internet speeds. According to an MPs’ report, 5.7 million of us are saddled with connections so slow they could be breaking regulations. So what can you do to get a better service?

Know what speed you’re supposed to have

plenty of free online checkers that allow you to test your broadband speed. The law says a broadband provider only has to deliver 10 per cent of advertised speeds. This means that if you’ve signed up to a 17Mb service, they’re only required to give you 1.7Mb. • Check your service provider has signed up to Ofcom’s Code of Practice. If so, it has to give you an estimated speed of what you will ACTUALLY receive.

How to get a better connection • Upgrade to a higher-spec package. This sounds obvious, but you’ll get faster broadband if you sign up to a faster deal. And it needn’t cost you more if you shop around.

• Find out who’s fastest in your area – ask your neighbours.

If one provider is consistently faster than others, think about switching to them. Remember, though, that the speed you get depends how far you are from the telephone exchange, thanks to BT’s old-fashioned copper wire (that everyone has to deal with).

How to make the most of your connection • Use good wire – and keep it short. Long, poor-quality leads from your socket to your router will slow you down.
