Most of the `experts` seem to agree that 2014 is the year we should begin to see the UK moving steadily out of recession with growth in our economy bringing new businesses, new jobs and the revival of our construction industry.

Undoubtedly we need our existing businesses to have the confidence to invest, develop new services and markets and grow whilst at the same time, at a more modest level but nevertheless equally important, we need people with the ideas and confidence to start new businesses with the necessary support and encouragement from local and national government. Let`s see the empty shops on our High Streets filling up again bringing life back to our town centres.

We have in fact seen a modest increase in the number of small new businesses opening up here recently and we at Trade Locally firmly believe it is these ventures alongside our existing independently owned local businesses that are the backbone of our economy and will be so in the future. Independent local businesses play a vital role in maintaining a lively local economy by helping keep finances within our local area rather than some distantly based HQ of a large corporate concern.

What`s more independent local businesses tend to use the goods and services of other local businesses and support local initiatives and community ventures, all to our benefit. Windows 8 – First term report When you consider that over 90% of PCs (and I include laptops in this designation) run the Microsoft Windows operating system, it is pretty important to know if the latest version of this almost universal software is actually any good.

Most people who regularly work on computers will have had some exposure to Windows 8, the much vaunted latest version.

So here is my take on what’s good and what’s bad, together with a few tips on how to get the most out of it.

Windows 8 is a hybrid system designed to work on both PCs and tablets. There is logic to this; PC sales are falling, albeit slowly, while tablet sales are growing strongly, so Microsoft need to have a product that can target the growth market while still dominating the mature market of PCs. However, the typical tablet user is a very different animal to the typical PC user. Only 30% of tablet users perform any work related activities on their computers, whereas that figure for PC owners is close to 80%.

Google’s Android operating system increasingly dominates the world of tablets and it will be interesting to see if Microsoft can make any significant inroads into this market.

The way that Windows 8 is able to offer the best of both worlds is to have two different user interfaces. The “Metro” menu is designed to appeal to habitual tablet users and its tiles on a blue background layout will be familiar to anyone who has turned on a TV set in the last 6 months. Each tile represents an App, which used to be known as a program in earlier versions

of Windows. Click once on the App, or tap it if you’re using a tablet, and it will open. To return to the Metro menu just hit the Windows key on the keyboard or the round button on a tablet.

You can close an App by grabbing the top edge of it and pulling it down to the bottom. To find an App, program or folder, it’s easiest to use the search function. Move the cursor to the top right corner and click on the search function, then just type the name of whatever you are looking for, for example calculator.

I don’t like the Metro version of Internet Explorer which seems to be trying to imitate Google Chrome. The Mail email client is clunky to use and doesn’t support POP3 email addresses; my advice is to download Mozilla Thunderbird instead. Other than that, the Metro interface is a capable alternative to Android or iOS and it has the added advantage that it supports business users much better than either of its tablet competitors.

However, most users familiar with earlier versions of Windows will stick with the desktop interface which is similar in many ways to Windows 7. You can tab between the Metro menu

and desktop by clicking on the Desktop tile or by hitting the Windows button and D simultaneously. The iconic Start button is no more, replaced by the Metro menu, but it’s easy to pin programs you use regularly to the taskbar. Internet Explorer works in the same way as before when launched from the desktop and it is easy to navigate through folders, save files and documents and set up the computer on a network.

Internet security is greatly improved too.

One of the great benefits of Windows 8 is that system upgrades are automatically downloaded to the computer, though this can take a bit of time to do. Microsoft has already launched Windows 8.1 which is an improvement on the original version. Many diehard Windows users have complained that 8 is not as intuitive as earlier versions and this is true. But, if you take a bit of time to learn a few tricks of the trade, you will find using the software rewarding and straightforward. My end of term report? I’ll give it an A-.

PROPERTY They’re all the range As I have said before, the kitchen should be the heart of the home, particularly if it is a large dining kitchen, and the heart of the kitchen is fast becoming the cooker. Right now, the must have accessory for the perfect kitchen is the range cooker. These extra wide, free standing monsters used to be the preserve of the restaurant kitchen, but now they can be found in the most humble of terrace homes.

Range cookers are 300 or 400mm wider than a standard oven and have two or three ovens and a separate grill. They also have five or eight rings on the hob and normally a tall oven that can cook up to five dishes at the same time. That is the big

advantage of a range cooker, you can cook a huge amount of food simultaneously. Although most families will only use a fraction of the cooker’s capability most of the time, they are ideal for dinner parties and perfect for big family get-togethers such as Christmas dinner. Dinner parties are enjoying a resurgence in popularity, thanks to the success of TV shows such as Come Dine with Me, which might explain the growing appeal of the range cooker.

Replacement Windows

Since the 1970s, residential windows have been dominated by the increasing popularity of double glazing, because of the insulation it provides against both cold and noise. Early windows had aluminium frames and looked almost industrial in their application. It’s no surprise that they were rapidly replaced with the ubiquitous UPVC, which is cheaper, better insulated, never needs painting and requires almost no maintenance.

Since 2002, building regulations regarding thermal heat loss effectively make fitting double glazing compulsory for all new houses.

The efficiency of the glass has also improved dramatically over the years. A rated glass sealed units reflect heat back into the room, have argon gas between the panes and are fitted with draft proof seals.

You can even get glass that generates electricity from the sunlight and self-cleaning glass that never needs the attentions of a window cleaner. If you are considering replacement windows, here are a few things to think about.

UPVC UPVC is still by far the most common material for replacement window frames, but it does have its shortcomings.

Older installations are prone to yellowing and there can be sizeable gaps between the joints. Also, UPVC windows fitted to a period property tend to look completely out of character. Even so, UPVC is usually the most cost effective option and the quality of the plastics has improved

enormously over the years.

It is the first choice for most homeowners looking to upgrade their windows.

Wooden Frames A lot of houses were fitted with cheap softwood frames in the 60s and 70s and few of them have stood the test of time.

The wood is easily damaged and unless it is scrupulously maintained it can just rot away.

Hardwood frames are a different matter though; from stately homes to new build mansions, wood is the window frame material of choice. There are two problems with wooden frames, firstly they have to be painted every five years and secondly they can be prohibitively expensive, particularly for oak frames. However, one option that few people consider is to have the existing wooden frames renovated and upgraded and A rated sealed units fitted within the existing frames.

Draft proofing and security are brought up to modern standards as part of the process. There are plenty of businesses that specialise in this kind of work and the cost is generally about half that of replacement windows.

Aluminium Frames From being completely passĂŠ just a few years ago, aluminium frames are making a comeback.

These days they come in all shapes and sizes, are extremely durable, well insulated and they come in any finish you care to think of. Aluminium units look their best in an ultramodern new build or an industrial building that has been converted to residential use.

French Windows and Bi-fold Doors Aluminium framed, sliding French windows that were de-rigeur a decade ago are now old hat. The must-have French windows of today are wood constructed, three quarter glazed conventional hinged doors in a classical style. Even more up to the minute are timber frame bi-fold doors that open up an entire wall and bring the garden into your living room.

With climate change a growing issue, they are even available as flood proof doors.

Listed Buildings Grade II listed buildings are severely constrained in any changes that can be made to existing windows, particularly at the front of the house. Single glazed sash windows must be replaced with identical items because the glazing bars are too slender to support double glazed units. Generally, the conservation authorities prefer existing windows to be refurbished rather than replaced. To improve insulation it is possible to fit secondary double glazing. Windows to the rear of the property must have replacement windows very similar to what is already there, though double glazing can be installed. Once again, it makes a lot of sense to refurbish the existing window frames and install double glazed sealed units.

PROPERTY The good school effect Research by Savills the estate agent suggests that the effect of a good school on nearby house prices has never been more significant. The data showed that prices for homes near an outstanding state primary school are on average 40% higher than other homes in the area. Interestingly, the effect on house prices near a good independent school is even more pronounced, yet a good state secondary school has less of an impact.

Savills argue that parents tend to plan ahead and, as soon as their first child is born, they will start the search for a home in an area near a good school – hence the exaggerated effect of primary schools. There is also the fact that children will travel further

to secondary school because they can make the journey independently, rather than relying on their parents.

Savills had a top ten league table of schools with the biggest impact on prices and I was interested to see that one of them was Tollerton Primary, located in my Nottinghamshire stamping ground, which apparently jacks up local house prices by 136%. Tollerton is a small village close to the affluent villages of South Nottinghamshire. It is also close to the leafy Nottingham suburb of West Bridgford which has several outstanding primary schools of its own, with house prices to match.

But the closest town of any size is actually a former pit

village which, inevitably, has lower house prices than those in the surrounding area. The example given of a property with an inflated price tag was a four bedroom house with a swimming pool in nearby Keyworth, a prosperous country town, which was on the market for £795,000 – hardly representative of the local market.

When it comes to areas with high house prices, good primary schools tend to be part of a package that includes things like low crime rates, good transport links and good local amenities.

As with all statistics, these data are subject to interpretation.

HOME IMPROVEMENTS

Decorating

Decorating is the one task that even the most DIY-phobic can turn their hands to. More importantly, it is relatively cheap and can make a huge difference to your home. Here are a few hints on how to go about it.

Preparation Whatever kind of decorating you are doing, proper preparation is essential. If you are decorating a wall that is already papered, the old wallpaper needs to be completely removed. Tear off the outer layer and then use a steamer to remove the last traces of the inner layer. If you are painting the wall, remove any last traces of paste with a proprietary detergent.

If you are painting woodwork for the first time, apply knotting solution to any knots and then seal the wood with undercoat or watered down emulsion.

When re-glossing woodwork, sand down the old paintwork to give the coat something to key to. Fill in any holes, cracks or gaps with decorator’s filler; this comes in tubs or tubes and can be applied with a mastic gun. Allow to dry and then sand down before painting it. Also fill in any holes or cracks in plaster before painting. If you are not confident in the accuracy of your brushwork, apply masking tape to the unpainted edge making sure there are no creases in the tape. Don’t forget to thoroughly cover all exposed surfaces with dust sheets before you start decorating Wallpapering Wallpaper is expensive, time consuming to apply and can

be overwhelming if used to decorate the whole room. It makes sense to just paper one wall as a feature wall. Before you start, make sure you have the right equipment, a pasting table, tub for the paste, large pair of sharp scissors and papering brush. A tape measure and craft knife are also useful.

Hang your first piece into the corner of the room. Measure the drop against the wall and mark the point where you will cut across the roll. Use a spirit level to mark a vertical line just less than a paper’s width from the corner. Apply plenty of paste to the back of the paper, folding it as you go to keep the piece to a manageable length. Line up one edge of the sheet with the vertical mark and then use the papering brush to smooth it evenly against the wall and press it into the corners. Score a line along the corners with a fingernail, peel the paper back slightly and cut along each score mark. The paper will now fit perfectly. Repeat the process by butting each new drop against the edge of the sheet you have already laid.

Emulsioning Upmarket brands of paint such as Farrow and Ball are very popular right now, but they are also very expensive. Much of their appeal lies in the traditional colour palette they employ, so a more cost effective option is to have Dulux colour match paint mixed up in the exact shade you want.

Usually you can get away with just one coat too. Money spent on a high quality brush is never wasted. Don’t overload the brush with paint and reload it frequently. Use slow careful strokes into the corners; your strokes should all be in the same direction. If you do slip, just wipe off the excess paint with a damp cloth. Always apply two coats with the brush.

Gloss work Modern gloss paint is water based which means that you don’t get as a good a finish as with oil based paint and white gloss will yellow over time.

However, it is easier to work with and at least you can rinse the brush out under the tap when you’ve finished. The same rules apply as for brushwork with emulsion. You may need to apply more than two coats.

OPINION Sell, Sell, Sell… Please Stop, Stop, Stop!

Following my house being flooded a few months ago, I feel I really must tell you about my experiences replacing my ruined possessions.

First up is DFS, or Dreadful Flippin’ Sofas as they are convivially known. I bought two sofas off them, which aren’t at all dreadful if you’re interested, and I must be the perfect customer. I went online and ploughed through the huge range of sofas, I picked the colour I wanted and then I made a trip to my local shop to make sure my chosen sofa was comfy to sit on. Only after all this did I phone up to place my order. I expected it to be a straightforward matter of giving my address, telling them what I wanted and handing over my card details – job done! Instead the call started with a lengthy lecture about the quality of the leather.

Bemused and a bit bored, I started to doze off until I was rudely awakened by the words “an extra five hundred pounds.” Wondering what I had just agreed to, I started to panic a bit, but it turned out that this was the cost of upgrading to “Luxury” leather. I politely declined… four times!

The conversation moved on to cleaning the leather and, again, I felt my eyes start to grow heavy. Eventually I realised he was trying to flog me a cleaning kit, a snip at £78, so I declined another four times, though a little less politely. Undeterred, the

salesman launched into a description of the horrendous scratches the feet of the sofas could inflict on my wooden floors, something easily avoided if only I would give him a £32 (I think) for some felt pads to stick on the bottom of them. Fearing for my sanity, I agreed; anything to get off the phone.

Chastened by this experience, I moved on to buying a new fridge from Currys. Cleverly, I decided to use their website to place my order so that nobody would have the opportunity to sell me anything. Unfortunately, as soon as I entered my card details, the screen went blank and then took me back to the home page; I didn’t know whether I’d bought a fridge or not. Regretfully, I phoned the helpline. The man on the phone assured me my order had been processed and then took the opportunity to enquire what I knew about their extended warranty scheme.

The fact that it cost 50% of the price of the fridge was all I needed to know, but it still took a record five refusals before I could get him off the phone.

What they don’t realise is how annoying their customers find this treatment. They also didn’t realise that I had other household goods to buy as well. So, for my new washing machine and dishwasher I used a local retailer, Appliance City. Their prices were much the same as Currys and they had a similarly broad range of stock. The difference was, when I phoned to place my order, the man was so thrilled that I wanted to buy something off him that, far from trying to sell me some things I didn’t want or need, he actually gave me a discount. I also need to buy another sofa, but it won’t be from DFS. The moral of the tale is, just because someone wants to buy something, it doesn’t mean they want to be sold to.

FILM REVIEW The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (12A) Based on the enormously popular futuristic sci-fi series, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, this middle instalment in the trilogy follows Katniss Everdeen’s (Jennifer Lawrence) attempts to reconcile her role as a puppet for the totalitarian state whilst harbouring her own secret rebellious instincts.

Part 1984, part Harry Potter, The Hunger Games treads a very fine line between visceral Hollywood teenage entertainment and far darker, grandiose themes of violence and oppression. This is not the first time such a meld has been attempted; in fact, The Hunger Games comes on the back of a wave of ‘darkteen’ cinema that has included The Golden Compass (2007), the Twilight series and the later instalments of the Harry Potter franchise. Where Catching Fire differs from all of these

examples is that it actually does this well. It’s difficult to think of a blockbuster in recent memory that captures such a fine balance between respecting its source material and not taking itself too seriously.

This is not to say Catching Fire isn’t without its faults. At 146 minutes it is ludicrously long, especially considering its other major vice is its capacity to take long breaks in one location so characters can express their feelings to one another. This results in a trade-off; on the one hand we get surprisingly well-rounded protagonists (considering just how many damn people there are in the film), on the other we experience a drop in the overall level of threat the villain presents. It’s not a major issue however, there is enough imagination and computer generated flair in

the action sequences to make everything sparkle and seem dangerous once again.

It’s smart, it’s funny, it’s pretty and it has a huge heart in Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson’s superb centrestage performances. It’s not perfect, but it makes a fantastic addition to the year’s otherwise lacklustre blockbuster catalogue.

MOTORING Volkswagen Beetle 1.4 TSI After a remarkable 13 years of sales, the last generation “New Beetle” stopped production in 2011. And, in all that time, I never came across one with a male owner. The Beetle was the first of the retro cars, new models that bought style and flair to the humble hatchback by adding a funky body with styling cues taken from a much loved classic. There was just one problem, the New Beetle was based on the MK3 Golf that had been in production since 1993. By the time they stopped making it, the only thing the Beetle had in common with a modern car was Volkswagen’s ever dependable build quality.

The all new VW Beetle sets out to change all this. VW are confident that this car will be sportier than the last model, more of a driver’s car, and it is confident it will be appealing to men as well as women. Well, I’m a man so let’s find out. Just one look at the Beetle and it’s obvious they have got the styling spot on. It’s still got the bulbous wings, vestigial running boards and curving roofline that link it so closely to the 1930s original, but it is sleeker, sportier and more solid, every inch a car for the modern age. The rear windows are bigger too, at least on the coupé version, and that tennis court size expanse of plastic between the dash and the windscreen has finally been eradicated.

Inside the car, the differences are more pronounced, particularly the dash. Based on the original Beetle, it is a great slab of a thing that rears up in front of you. I have to say I love it; it’s imposingly traditional yet totally up to date. Shame about the quality of some of the plastics

though. The coupé is still a four seater, there’s still not much room in the back seats, but the boot is a good size with a practical opening. All in all, it’s a nice place to be.

The sportiness is not intended to be just visual, thanks largely to the engine line up. There are three petrol engines to choose from, a 1.2 turbo that delivers 104bhp, a 1.4 that boasts both a turbocharger and a supercharger and the 2.0 litre 197bhp turbo from the Golf GTi. I drove the 1.4 and, although it kicks out an impressive 158bhp, it doesn’t feel especially quick.

In fact it isn’t, 0-62 comes up in 8.3 seconds and it manages a top speed of 129mph. This is still a very good engine though, free revving with a nice rorty sound and it delivers 43mpg on the combined cycle. There are also 2.0 and 1.6 litre diesels on offer, but they are geared more to economy than driving pleasure.

The Beetle has a wider track, revised front and rear suspension, bigger tyres and a new electric steering setup but, disappointingly, these things

don’t deliver inspired handling.

The steering is lifeless, though surprisingly heavy, and there’s a fair bit of body roll. At least there’s plenty of grip so you can corner hard, even if it’s no fun doing so. The ride is worse still, decidedly bumpy, particularly at low speeds over poor surfaces.

This is a shame because the Golf, especially the GTi, does all these things so well.

Don’t get me wrong, this new, new Beetle is a good car and is a big improvement on its predecessor. The engines are first rate, the electronics are bang up to date and it has all the economy and performance most buyers could hope for. It also feels as if it was designed to be what it is, rather than a funky body plonked on another car’s floor pan. It looks terrific too, is as stylish as you like and I have no doubt it will be a big seller. Bu, as a male driver, I still wouldn’t buy one; I’d rather have a Golf.

TRAVEL Carnage comes to Andorra When twelve footballers, some of whom have no experience of skiing whatsoever, go on a skiing holiday, you know that it’s going end badly. But that’s what we did, so we just had to make the most of it. The venue was Arinsal in Andorra and we were staying in the Husa Patagonia which is actually a very nice hotel, much too good for the likes of us. Within six hours of arriving we were on our final warning from the hotel’s management for a variety of sins including playing loud music in our rooms, nudity in the corridors and general drunken bad behaviour – not bad for eight o’clock in the evening!

Suitably chastened, we calmed down and transformed ourselves into model citizens.

I was one of the people with no skiing experience at all. With hindsight, it would have made sense to book myself on a course of skiing lessons, but I was deterred by the 100 euro cost and instead made do with a couple of ad hoc coaching sessions from some friends who had once been on a school skiing trip. Unfortunately, they got bored after half an hour and went off to do some proper skiing, by which time I had learned how to stop (fall over) and do a left hand snow plough turn, but not a right. This is a shame because Arinsal actually has some brilliant skiing with miles of runs with a good range of difficulties including some terrifying black runs that I would never dream of attempting, no matter how many beers I’d had over lunch. The lifts never had any queues which is apparently unusual; in many resorts you can wait for ages to get up the mountain. It was only at the end of the week, when I’d managed

to master the basics and could get down a blue run without killing myself, that I realised what I’d missed out on.

Arinsal was hosting its annual music festival, Snow Boxx, while we were there. I use the word music loosely because I’d never heard of any of the bands playing and it turned out that half of them were DJs and not bands at all. They were playing techno, drum n bass, R&B and other such rubbish, so we didn’t go to any of the events.

However, it did mean that the cream of the European club scene had descended on the resort and the bars were full of Swedish hotties, there for the rave. Bizarrely, they didn’t seem interested in drunken English footballers, but what do I care; why would I want to get involved with women with such bad taste in music? It did make for a great atmosphere though.

We continued to be on our best behaviour in the hotel, but the drunken high jinks continued as soon as we went out of the front door. Arinsal is a small town with about a thousand bars so we were well catered for. Cosmopolitan Scandinavians

and Germans looked on in confusion as we played our full repertoire of drinking games and, despite our best efforts to explain, they remain ignorant of the concept of a forfeit. The holiday quickly settled into a pattern, a hung-over trudge up the mountain in the morning, several near death experiences as my confidence far outstripped my ability, followed by a few reviving beers at lunchtime. The evenings were made up of a dizzying frenzy of vodka shots, beer games and cocktails and usually ended with my advances being rebuffed by stunning girls from a variety of European countries.

This all sounds a lot like a lads’ holiday in Magaluf and, in fact, BBC 3 has recently launched a series called Skiing, Sex and Suspicious Parents; they should have invited us to take part. I had a brilliant holiday and would definitely go to Arinsal again. But next time there will be a bit less drinking and a lot more skiing and I won’t go with a dozen footballers.
