What makes Greenwood Extended Day the best option for your family’s out of school time needs? Several words come to mind: Home-away-from-home, friendships, community, passionate staff. At Greenwood, people come first. What drives human beings is the feeling of love and belonging, and that is what we strive for. The activities offered throughout the day allow children to explore interests in a safe, caring environment. Our staff has all worked with children for 5-30+ years. We understand the ages and stages, and trials and tribulations of childhood. Most of us are parents and/or grandparents who know how balancing work and family needs to be a team effort with all involved. We are honored to be a part of that team. Following the Change In Action curriculum, we are pleased to see the results that naturally occur. An Ubuntu community is established. Ubuntu is an African term meaning, “To be truly human, to know that you are bound up with others in the bundle of life, for a person is only a person through other people.” How amazing it is to see the children’s eyes open wider when they discover that we all have feelings and insecurities that we must overcome, and how accepting one another the way we are and blending together as a community is truly worthwhile. Watching the 5th grade students lead Change In Action activities with the younger children is so endearing. While they are gaining leadership skills and self-confidence, the younger children are given positive role models and see that being kind is cool. What could be better than that? The curriculum focuses on the social acceptance of positive behaviors and also acceptance of what makes us unique. Our newly remodeled STEM laboratory offers children access to the internet to work on homework such as Lexia and IXL. Hands-on projects are also offered to inspire children to think beyond the classroom and put theories into action. The STEM laboratory shows children learning is fun! Human Interaction is essential to thrive. In these days where technology is everywhere you look, it is detrimental that we emphasize to children that we do not need to be plugged in constantly. Eye contact, laughter, physical fitness, and hobbies are important for brain stimulation, growth and development. Greenwood provides an environment where stories are told, games are played, and lifetime friendships are created. We hope you will consider us for your out of school time needs.
