Sale Terms and Conditions Registered bulls sell under Suggested Terms and Conditions of the American Angus Association or American Simmental Association. All cattle are to be paid for by the purchaser during or immediately after the sale and will not be released until after settlement has been made. Buyers must be sure to furnish the sale clerk complete information for transferring of registration certificates, which will be mailed at a later date. Commercial bulls and females sell without a registration certificate.

Herd Health All cattle are in good health and will have interstate health charts required for immediate shipment. All bulls have been fertility examined. Each animal will be at the purchaser’s risk after it is sold.

Catalog Information The available Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) numbers are included in the catalog and were current as of 2/8/16, as reported by the American Angus Association or American Simmental Association. EPDs are predictions of how future progeny are expected to perform in each of the traits listed, as compared to the progeny of a breed average bull. Interim EPD is indicated by an “I” to the left of the plus or minus sign preceding the EPD. Angus interim EPDs are calculated on animals on which AHIR records have been processed between National Cattle Evaluations, conducted twice per year. Interim EPDs are updated in the next National Cattle Evaluation, provided all edit checks are met.

EPDs ranking in the top 15% of non-parent Angus bulls or hybrid Simmental are noted.

PRODUCTION/MATERNAL EPDs: Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight (YW) expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth compared to that of other sires.

Maternal Milk (Milk) is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Scrotal Circumference (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

Heifer Pregnancy (HP) EPDs are designed to characterize differences among sires for daughters’ heifer pregnancy. A higher EPD sire would be expected to have daughters with a greater probability or chance of becoming pregnant during a normal breeding season than a sire with a lower EPD.

CARCASS EPDs: Angus Carcass EPDs are calculated from an integrated analysis of the Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR®) carcass and ultrasound phenotypic databases. The genetic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass weight, marbling score, ribeye area and fat thickness. The units of measure are in carcass trait format and analyzed on an age-constant basis. Included in this catalog are EPDs for Marbling and Ribeye Area.

Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

$VALUES Weaned Calf Value, Feedlot Value, Grid Value and Beef Value are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database, if randomly mated and the calves are exposed to the same environment. Included in this catalog are $Values for Weaned Calf and Beef.

Weaned Calf Value: The expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning weight, milk and mature cow size.

Beef Value: The expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

GE-EPDs and Genomic Trait Tests Genomic-Enhanced Expected Progeny Differences (GE-EPDs) are the best estimate of an animal’s genetic worth as a parent. These values make use of known pedigree, performance and genomic information about an animal, its progeny and other relatives.

Adding a genomic test to GE-EPDs: • Enhances predictability of current selection tools.

• Increases EPD accuracy on young animals.

• Characterizes genetics for traits where it’s difficult to measure the animal’s own performance (e.g., carcass traits in breeding stock or maternal traits in bulls).

• Allows EPDs to be calculated for animals that may have had blank boxes previously (e.g., single animal contemporary groups or those without an EPD for a specific trait).

Genomic trait tests: • Are used as indicator traits to compute EPDs (genetic correlations between the high-density genomic tests and American Angus Association’s phenotypic database effectively range from .60 to .70, except for milk and heifer pregnancy).

• Provide similar amount of accuracy as if unproven animals already have 8 to 20 progeny recorded.

• Include a genomic percent rank (1-100) for each trait, where 1 is considered most favorable. Though percent ranks are provided with the purchase of a genomic test, GE-EPDs are the selection tool of choice because they account for all sources of information (pedigree, performance and genomics).
