Ballots cast in annexation vote

The special election for the City of Patterson’s annexation measure, which is needed for a huge development deal to go forward, was held April 9. The results have yet to be certified, but an initial count indicates that voters will approve it. By the end of the voting day on Tuesday, the ballots came in 15-6 in favor of annexation.

“The law requires that if a ballot is postmarked on or before election day, that we are to accept it for seven days after election day,” said Stanislaus County Registrar Donna Linder. “So, we will be accepting mail that has been postmarked on or before election day until next Tuesday.”

The ballots were mailed in mid-March to the 41 registered voters who live in the unincorporated area that’s part of the annexation plan. Voters had the option of mailing them back to the county office in Modesto or returning them in person. 21 ballots had been received by 8:00 p.m. on April 9.

Just outside of the Patterson city limits, there are about 1,300 acres upon which developers want to build 5,500 homes. For the Zacharias/Baldwin Ranch project to become a reality, the property must be annexed onto the City. Last year, the City Council was moving through the pain staking steps that are required by law to get that accomplished.

An application for the annexation of the acreage was given the green light by the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO). However, there were still more hoops to jump through before LAFCO would give its final stamp of approval. One of those was a mandatory “Protest Hearing.” This provided the legal platform for landowners in the annexation area to voice their opposition if they wanted to – and they did just that.

“All that’s required to trigger a vote is 25% of the residents who live there to protest,” said Mayor Michael Clauzel at a November City

$15 million dollar grant to fund Delta-Mendota solar energy project

The giant water canals that snake their way through the Patterson area may soon be generating energy in a new way. The San Luis and Delta-Mendota Water Authority has been awarded a $15 million-dollar federal grant to test out floating solar panels.

Del Puerto Water District General Manager Anthea Hansen was at the ceremony last week when the grant was announced by Governor Gavin Newsome. She says the canal systems in and around Patterson could see a number of benefits if this experiment proves to be viable.

The Delta-Mendota Canal Floating Solar Project will span five years and involve multiple phases, including site selection, engineering, construction, operation, and maintenance. The project will assess the viability of floating solar arrays, optimal tethering, and power connection options, the potential for reduced evaporation and algal growth, and potential recommendations for operation and maintenance requirements.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which provided the $15 million grant, will be a collaborator in this huge endeavor. Also, the University of California, Merced, will

“The solar panels could help prevent evaporation which would conserve water,” said Hansen. “Also having clean energy produced by both state and federal water projects can help lower the costs of energy that the users of water have to pay for. For example, if the Central Valley Project is not able to generate enough energy through our hydropower system to meet the demands that we have from our pumping plants and our reservoirs, then we have to buy energy on the grid. Ultimately, it’s the water users that pay for the cost of that energy.”

help collect and analyze data. UCM is already doing the same thing for a similar project in Turlock which is getting its money from the state.

The San Luis & Delta-Mendota Water Authority was established in January of 1992 and consists of 27 member agencies within the western San Joaquin, San Benito, and Santa Clara Valleys, that provide water service to approximately 1,200,000 acres of irrigated agriculture, 2.5 million people, including many living in economically disadvantaged communities, and 130,000 acres of managed wetlands of importance to the Pacific Flyway.

Council meeting last year. “That’s all that’s required to push it to this next level.”

Some of the landowners – mostly in the Ivy Rose neighborhoodpushed back because they didn’t want their private wells to become part of the City’s water/ sewer system. Also, they didn’t want to be required to pay for it. Additionally, they wanted better protection from noise that will inevitably be generated by the increase in population and traffic. They didn’t want to have to foot the bill on that either. Ultimately, the developers agreed to pony up the money for both.

According to documents filed with the city, the Zacharias project area is 1,158.4 acres located on the north end of the City of Patterson bounded by Rogers Road (west), Zacharias Road (north), the California Northern Railroad tracks and Ward Avenue (east), and existing residential and business park uses (south). The Baldwin Ranch project area is 68.7 acres

located at the south end of Baldwin Road and is contiguous to the DeltaMendota Canal (west), the City of Patterson Corporation Yard (north), and agricultural uses (east and south).

There are eight stakeholders involved in the project: Keystone Ranch LLC, Lakeside Hills LLC, Leroy Deldon, Eagle

Valley Investments LLC, Larry K. Buehner, John Potter, Friedrich Family Ltd. Partnership and Josaphine Traina Ltd. Partnership.

Guided by the City’s General Plan, development in the two areas is comprised of commercial and residential use including mixed density housing, retail shopping,

and business park use in the Zacharias project area. The development is expected to add more than 12,000 new residents to the City.

The official count for the annexation election is expected to be certified by next week. Until then, the issue is still officially undecided.

Use these easy steps to get your taxes filed

The sooner you get started on addressing financial procrastination, the faster your personal finances will improve. Sure, obstacles will emerge, but you can overcome through simple strategies. Keep a positive mindset, break tasks down into manageable activities, set some goals, and commit, and soon you will find yourself on the road to financial stability and overcoming delay.

Simplifying and breaking down tasks is one of the easiest ways to get your items ready for taxes. So, start small. What do I need to get my taxes done? My social security number, my driver’s license and my bank account numbers are easy ones to pull together. What documents do I need to have together? These are w2s (wage income), 1099 (other income), 1098 (mortgage interest statement), 1095 (health insurance). Most of these documents can be accessed online if you do not have a paper one. Go to your employer’s website that they gave you and save the w2 to a thumb drive. This can be done with all of your documents. Sometimes we feel cluttered with so many papers. If you have business expenses, you can put them on an excel spreadsheet or word document and save it as well on a thumb drive. Label that thumb drive as 2023 taxes.

Set some deadlines. The IRS sets April 15 as the tax deadline. Accept that as the day you will have it done by. Do not think ohhhh I can file an extension. That will only create more anxiety with continued procrastination.

Celebrate with the fact that you have accomplished your taxes being done on time. If you are getting a refund set aside some of it to enjoy a delicious meal with a friend.

If you owe taxes find out why and change that for next year. Do you need to withhold more from your wages? Do you need to pay estimated taxes? Will putting a small sum in an IRA account by April 15 save some money in taxes by reducing your income or qualifying you for the Saver’s Credit.

Patterson wins $2,000 in Fire Truck Face Off

The Patterson Fire Department beat out 31 other fire departments throughout northern California to win $2,000 in the 2024 Fire Truck Face-Off. The PFD is giving the money to local nonprofit Love Patterson which will hold its annual citywide cleanup project later this month. The social media contest is sponsored by Golden State Fire Apparatus – a company that builds fire trucks. In a YouTube video, Ryan Wright with GSFA explained only the departments that have purchased equipment in the last year can take part in their annual popularity contest. Patterson just bought two new fire engines. “Each year it’s about the fire trucks,

the charities, and most of all the bragging rights,” said Wright. “We modeled this contest based on the NCAA basketball tournament. This year we have 39 participants who are eligible of which we delivered their fire trucks last year. From there we narrowed it down to 32 contestants to compete against each other.” Patterson got more votes on Facebook and Instagram than any other the other fire departments over the past several weeks. Along with the charity donation, Patterson will receive a plaque for one of their engines.

Reflect on your actions at life’s crossroads

In times of uncertainty and difficulty, it is natural for us to seek comfort in the familiar, even if it means returning to our old ways of life. This struggle is precisely what we witness in the story of Peter's encounter with Jesus in John 21:1-14. Peter, one of Jesus' closest disciples, found himself at a crossroads, longing to return to his former life as a fisherman. However, this encounter with the risen Lord not only transformed Peter's perspective but also served as a powerful reminder that encountering Jesus changes everything.

John 21:1-3 says, "Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So, they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing."

When we say that we are going fishing, it might mean that we want to go and get away from it all. But when Peter said this statement, it had a deeper meaning. Peter was a fisherman by trade before he became one of Jesus’ disciples. So, when Peter said, I am going fishing, he was basically saying, “I am going back to my old life. I am going back to what I know and what I am familiar with.” Perhaps he felt lost, unsure of how to move forward after witnessing the crucifixion of the one he had followed so faithfully. He may have believed that his purpose as a disciple had come to an end. And to make matters worse, his return to his old life and what he knew and was familiar with was highly unsuccessful.

However, during Peter's uncertainty, Jesus appeared on the scene. It was in this critical moment of despair and confusion that Peter experienced a life-altering encounter with his risen Lord.

As Jesus stood on the shore, He called out to the disciples, instructing them to cast their net on the right side of the boat. This probably frustrated the disciples. They were professional fishermen. They were probably frustrated because their attempt to go back to their old

life and what they knew was a flop and now some random guy on the shore tells them to try the other side of the boat. But they what was asked of them. Following this seemingly mundane instruction, the miraculous happened – the disciples' net was filled to the point of breaking. Realizing that it was Jesus who had directed them, Peter was overcome with awe and recognition. Instantly, his perspective and trajectory changed. No longer bound by his past mindset, Peter jumped out of the boat and swam ashore to be with Jesus.

This encounter with Jesus serves as a powerful reminder that encountering Him has the power to radically transform our lives. It is an invitation to move beyond our past failures, doubts, and uncertainties. When we encounter Jesus, our perspectives shift, and our purpose is realigned.

For Peter, this encounter marked a turning point in his life. From that moment onward, he would fully embrace his calling as a disciple and a leader within the early Christian community. It was in this encounter that Peter learned that a life sur-

rendered to Jesus holds a greater purpose and significance than anything he could have imagined.

The story of Peter's encounter with Jesus resonates with our own journeys of faith. We, too, face moments of uncertainty, doubt, and the temptation to revert to our former ways. However, when we encounter Jesus, our lives are forever changed. He reminds us that He can turn our despair into hope, our confusion into clarity, and our past into a story of transformation.

The invitation for us today is to seek and encounter Jesus in our own lives. Through prayer, reflection, and seeking the truth found in His Word, we can encounter the transformative power of His love, grace, and truth. When we truly encounter Jesus, He will guide us, empower us, and reveal a purpose in our lives that far surpasses anything we could have ever imagined.

Let us be inspired by Peter's encounter with Jesus, recognizing that once we have an encounter with Him, our lives are forever changed. We can’t go back to our old lives, our old way of thinking or our old habits. May we have the courage to step out of our familiar boats and embrace the extraordinary life and purpose that Jesus has for each one of us.

Patterson’s heir arrives right on schedule.....

Ron’s column is from 2014

It’s trivia time – time for clearing the notes off the desk and taking a brain laxative.

A surprise visitor popped into Patterson last week. Jay Patterson, great-grandson of our town founder T.W. Patterson, was passing through and stayed a couple of nights with Mimi Draper. He also visited with her next door neighbor and a friend of Jay’s, John V. Azevedo. Thus Jay was here on Friday, March 14, the 100th anniversary of his great-grandfather’s death, as chronicled in this newspaper. Jay, who lives in Redmond, Ore., did not realize the noted anniversary until it was pointed out to him in the Irrigator. He was returning from a short driving trip to Mexico.

The maiden History Day last Saturday involving Patterson’s middle and high school students was considered by all to be highly successful. I can’t wait until next year!

First they can’t get the welding right on the $6 billion Bay Bridge project. Then an airplane

is lost with 239 passengers aboard. Heck, all we lost here in City Hall was a paltry $8 million – but fortunately it was eventually found.

Next time you are in the City Hall lobby, check out the display case for a pair of ancient typewriters that belong to a city staffer. Well worth the look. These two are more ancient than Ol’ Blackie, the machine I pounded for 40 years that is now in the museum across the street.

Just the other day in a meeting of about 12 of us, a date for the next meeting was suggested. Everyone pulled out their electronic calendars to check their commitments – except me.

Really folks, I have chosen to remember my commitments. Keeps the brain active. It also causes me to miss a meeting now and then.

Also, take notice of the beautiful climbing yellow rose way up in a tree on the Mahaffey property. That would be on Las Palmas Avenue between Ninth Street and Ward Avenue. Specular!

Fast Talk is a shorter

than normal this week. My computer hasn’t yet cooled off from last week.

FOR THE SPORTS FAN

A team in the Nor-Cal playoffs representing the Santa Rosa area that scores only 17 points and loses by nearly 50 is a team that doesn’t deserve to be in the Nor-Cal playoffs. Or are our valley teams – Patterson included – just that superior?

AND FINALLY...............

Somewhere I read that your feet carry 25 billion bacteria. Mine too. Which brings a trio of questions to mind:

• Is that on each foot, or both?

• Who counted?

• And was it before or after a shower?

I think all of us deserve an answer.

Varsity baseball on fire

Since their standout performance at the high school baseball showcase in March at John Thurman Field in Modesto, California, the Tigers have been unstoppable, blazing through April with consistent scoring and stellar pitching.

In their April 1st tournament showdown against Gregori High School, the Tigers showcased their dominance, securing a commanding 7-1 victory. Max Medina led the pitching rotation with a solid five-inning performance, supported by Noah Cozart's two innings on the mound. Notable contributions on the base paths came from Nick Johnson and C.J. Medina, each recording a stolen base. C. Medina stood out at the plate with a perfect batting average of 1.000, contributing to the Tigers' offensive onslaught

alongside Cozart, Caden Lozano, Johnson, and Tyler Thorpe.

The following day, in the Easter tournament held in Atwater, California, the Tigers continued their reign of dominance, overpowering St. Joseph Notre Dame with an impressive 11-0 victory. C.J. Medina showcased his speed with two stolen bases, while Johnson and Owen Albrecht each added one stolen base to their stats. Pitcher N. Lozano delivered a stellar performance on the mound, pitching five innings, allowing only three hits, and striking out three pilots on a total of sixty-two pitches. M. Medina, C. Lozano, Johnson, Albrecht, Tony Lomeli, N. Lozano, and Guy Allard all contributed hits to secure the commanding win.

The momentum carried into their matchup against Ripon High School on April 3rd, where the Tigers continued their

winning streak with a dominant 10-0 shutout. G. Allard shone at the plate, going 3 for 4 and driving in five runs for the Tigers. Contributions from N. Lozano, T. Lomeli, C. Lozano, M. Medina, and Cozart further solidified the Tigers' victory.

With impressive performances from T. Lomeli and C. Medina, who each stole two bases, and O. Albrecht and Cozart adding one stolen base each, the Tigers displayed their prowess both offensively and defensively.

As the Tigers continue their hot streak, eyes are on the playoffs, with hopes of clinching a pennant and sending off their seniors in a triumphant manner. With their stellar performance throughout April, the Tigers are poised for a successful season finale.

Nuts media day 2024

In an exclusive interview with the media, Modesto Nuts manager Zach Vincej opened up about the team's remarkable run last season and shared his insights on the upcoming season. Vincej, who led the Nuts to a memorable campaign in the previous year, expressed gratitude for the team's achievements while emphasizing the importance of staying focused on the present. Reflecting on last season's success, Vincej reminisced, "It was a great run! We had a great group of guys, and the coaching staff was amazing. It takes an army to have that kind of success." He highlighted the camaraderie among the players and acknowledged the integral role played by the coaching staff in guiding the team to victory. Vincej also

noted the return of several young players to this year's roster, indicating continuity and potential for continued success. When asked about his experience managing the team during the Spring Breakout, introduced by Major League Baseball, Vincej expressed pride and satisfaction. "It was great! They deserve it, we all had a great time," he remarked. He credited the talent within the Seattle Mariners organization and emphasized the role of scouting and player development in nurturing young athletes and helping them realize their dreams.

Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Vincej expressed optimism about the team's prospects. "This year's team is special," he said. He acknowledged the importance of acknowledging last season's achieve -

ments while also focusing on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. "It'll be interesting to see how it goes by looking back to last year and moving along into the future," Vincej remarked. He also expressed gratitude for the support received from Modesto fans, emphasizing the significance of their backing in the team's journey. As the Nuts gear up for another exciting season, Vincej's reflections offer insight into the team's mindset and aspirations. With a blend of seasoned veterans and promising young talents, the Nuts aim to build on their past success and make a mark in the upcoming season. Under the guidance of Manager Zach Vincej, the Modesto Nuts are poised to deliver another thrilling season of baseball to their loyal fans.

As media day dawned at John Thurman Field, journalists gathered eagerly, poised to delve into the world of baseball through the eyes of rising star Tai Peete, the first-round draft pick for the Seattle Mariners. With microphones poised and cameras rolling, the exchange between Peete and the media offered a candid glimpse into his journey from draft day to professional baseball stardom. Media inquiries commenced with a probing question about Peete's spring season. In response, the athlete expressed heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to be back on the field, surrounded by friends and immersed in the game he loves. His enthusiasm set the tone for a dialogue rich in introspection and passion.

Reflecting on the rapid transition from draft day to joining the Modesto Nuts, Peete acknowledged the whirlwind nature of the experience. "It was all so quick," he recounted, highlighting the challenges of adjusting to a new routine and relocating to a different city. Despite the initial hurdles, Peete's excitement for the season ahead shone through, buoyed by the support of fans and the thrill of playing at the professional level. The conversation shifted to Peete's participation in the inaugural spring breakout game,

a milestone moment in his burgeoning career.

Describing the experience as "really cool," Peete reminisced about showcasing his skills in a Major League Baseball setting, facing off against familiar opponents from his past. The sense of camaraderie and competition underscored the significance of the journey that led him to John Thurman Field.

Amidst discussions of professional pursuits, Peete's commitment to family emerged as a central theme. In a heartwarming anecdote, the athlete shared a spontaneous visit home to sur-

prise his younger brother, his closest confidant. Their bond, evident in Peete's gesture of gifting a 1,000-piece Lego set, served as a poignant reminder of the importance of maintaining personal connections amidst the demands of a bustling career.

As the interview concluded, Peete's humility and grounded demeanor left an indelible impression on those present.

With each pitch and swing, Tai Peete continues to etch his legacy on the hallowed grounds of John Thurman Field, a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes everywhere.

interest

as provided in said note(s), advances, under the terms of said Deed of Trust, fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is: $ 56,276.58.

Note: Because the Bene ciary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt.

If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse.

The bene ciary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure, and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located.

NOTICE OF TRUSTEE'S SALE

NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction, if conducted after January 1, 2021, pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (877)-518-5700, or visit this internet website https://www.realtybid.com/, using the le number assigned to this case 2023-01944-CA to nd the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid, by remitting the funds and a davit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code, so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase.

of Trust Recorded 09/27/2002 as Instrument No. 2002-0125388-00 in book ---, page--- and of O cial Records in the o ce of the Recorder of Stanislaus County, California, Date of Sale: 05/24/2024 at 01:00 PM

If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned o may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying o all liens senior to the lien being auctioned o , before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s o ce or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property.

NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER:

The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, bene ciary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-960-8299 or visit this Internet Web site https://www. altisource.com/LoginPage.aspx using the le number assigned to this case 2023-01944-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be re ected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
