Fear provides healthy edge in business world

“Y

es, you can.” That was written on the back of a business card and taped to my door — in 1982. I had jumped into a job as business manager for a major company, responsible for 120,000 graduates and their events. My soul knew I could, my heart knew I could; only my head was screaming terror. Now, here we are 30 years later and my heart and soul still know, but now I have no fear. Fear is an interesting process. Fear and excitement are

on the flip side of the same emotion, depending on how you choose to view it. One of the scariest days of my life was the day I realized that I was in sales and I was my only product. With the last of six children to raise, fear was my best friend. It kept me on the straight and narrow, it kept me motivated to move, it kept my senses sharp, and finally I learned to embrace it, to live with it, to hush it.

There has never been a time in our lives when we have not been anxious about something. Will I meet the deadline? Do I have enough to pay the PATRICIA J. rent? Will someone MUNSON notice my shoes are not as new as I wish they were? Put fear in your pocket and pat it to make sure it is with you. Learn to notice it but not be ruled by it. I have been asked hundreds

of times, “How have you done what you’ve done?” My answer is always the same: “I made it up.” I am not kidding. I made up the consulting firm in chiropractic, the women’s workshop, the couples’ workshop, the little clothing store for deserving women, the conference centers, the billing company and so many other projects. I guess it never occurred to me that I couldn’t. You must have your fears and do it anyway. Keep in mind a couple of tips: 1. Do what you said you would do, when you said you

would do it. Integrity — even when no one is looking. 2. Strive to have the “who you are inside,” let the “who you present to the world” be authentic. 3. Never ask anyone to do anything you have not done and will not do yourself. 4. It costs nothing to be kind, generous of spirit, compassionate and forgiving. As they say in yoga, namaste. Patricia J. Munson has owned and operated the Platinum Conference and Event Center for six years and has owned or operated her own business for 31 years.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS. | 3

Hard work, integrity are cornerstones of success B eing a woman in business has been an interesting experience. Years ago, my husband Dave and I owned a trucking company. I was in sales, and I received many comments that were not predicated on my knowledge or expertise. They were always focused on the perception that I was a woman in a man’s world. It took grit to stand firm in my conviction of myself and to rise above the prejudice. It was always a challenge to prove I had the knowledge to do the job as well as, if not better than, any man. Twelve years ago, when Dave and I started Comfort Keepers, in-home care

for seniors, it was with the dream of making a difference in a person’s life. Being a woman in this industry is definitely an advantage. Most women possess the capacity of compassion, nurturing, and love — which are all valuable tools in dealing with the elderly. The ability to understand the pain and stress a family is going through — to take care of their loved ones and put yourself in their shoes to help them as if they were your family — is invaluable.

Apryl Yarbor,

I would tell other women: If you have a passion, follow that dream. As my father told me years ago, you have two things that are yours. They are your name and your word. PAM If you work hard and conduct yourself WARTA with integrity, you will always succeed. Don’t let anyone make you compromise your values. It doesn’t matter if you are a woman. If you have a talent and believe in yourself, you will succeed. The Tracy community has always

been very supportive of Dave and me since we’ve started Comfort Keepers. I feel very blessed to live in a community that has welcomed us with open arms. To have a community support and believe in you is such a treasure. I won’t ever take for granted the faith that the people of Tracy have entrusted in me and my business. I will always conduct myself with the highest level of professionalism, hoping to meet their expectations of a woman in business.

For 12 years, Pam Warta has been the owner of Comfort Keepers No. 355.

The Phonics Road to Reading Darlene Ann Krug Teacher/Tutor I have always wanted to be a teacher. After teaching first and second grades at a New Jersey suburban school and third grade at an Upper Manhattan, New York multi-ethnic school, I was accepted into the Army overseas teaching program where I taught first grade in Germany. Afterward when coming to California, I planned to continue teaching. However, after getting my credential, substituting and teaching summer school, I was told three years later that teaching was a “closed profession” and that I would have to change professions. After a successful second career as a mechanical designer in Silicon Valley and the East Bay, my heart led me to leave in order to be again with

my first love - children. Seven years ago I began my home tutoring business for 4-year-olds and older, with emphasis on teaching children to read through phonics. Instruction is private in my cheerful multi-purpose “classroom”. If your child struggles with reading or if you are looking for a sound foundation to beginning reading, I’m here to help! For more details or to schedule a “meet and greet” time, please call. My home is on E. Eaton, behind Tracy High School.

Would love to hear from you.

Reinvent yourself to achieve success A

fter 23 years in dental office management, I retired to continue pursuing my lifelong dream of being an entrepreneur. In the fall of 2009, my husband, Sam, and I, opened Altamont Mechanical Inc. Heating and Air Conditioning in Tracy. Many people thought I was crazy to start a business in the worst of economic times. I could not just sit back and wait for the phone to ring — I had to put a

business plan into action. I joined the Tracy Chamber of Commerce and got very involved in everything they had to offer a small business. I currently serve as an ambassador for the chamber and was voted ambassador of the year in 2012. I have joined many local networking groups to help market my business. I knew starting

try was taking a dive. I was not about to lose our home and everything we have worked hard for. This was motivation enough to make Altamont Mechanical heating and Air Conditioning a success. I quickly learned about social media to help market my business. I used free sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Yelp, Google and Yahoo — just to name a few. Altamont Mechanical, Inc. quickly became No. 1 on Google and Yelp with

5 stars. I was also voted Best of Tracy in 2010. I believe in supporting small, local-owned businesses and also see the same traditions by many local residents and businesses in Tracy using our business for their services. Tracy is such an ideal community for women to start their own business — we have such a supportive community of residents and other business owners that want to see you succeed as a small business and also shop local.

Find good balance between family, work

A

s a woman in business, there are certain challenges I have faced. One of them is trying to balance my business with the demands of family. In a family-run business, it’s imperative to draw the line between business and personal life. The tricky part is to carve out time for each, and to know when to do so. It’s a delicate balance of covering the business

updates, having dinner together and keeping time for personal conversation, as well. Another challenge is the devotion it takes to make your business successful. Sometimes you will have to miss social engagements for the sake of your business. I am personally motivated by giving our customers satisfaction each day, as I take care of the office back up work for our pool and spa company.

Giving our clients the personal attention that each one deserves motivates me. A customer can most often find me for help. I do my best to get them the information they are looking for, which is usually a progress report on their backyard project. Everyone’s personal

HART’S TRAINING

Tanya Hart has lived in Tracy with her Husband and two sons for 3 years. She summarizes her passion by saying, “I have always been into fitness. “I have been a competitor in body building, power lifting, and completed a full marathon with half marathons and mud runs in between.”



Tanya finally decided to make her passion a part-time job focusing on other moms who don’t have a lot of time or money but deserve to be their best physically. Tanya does in-home personal training and specialize in fitness nutrition, helping clients realize their full potential and “showing them it takes 100% effort both in your workout and in the kitchen to be healthy and get results.” Tanya says, “My clients come to my home so it is comfortable and private, and not an intimidating, crowded gym. I work with women of all ages and size. My goal is to make you happy and healthy, whatever that looks like to you. If you just wanna be able to run and play with your kids or up for a challenge of a race I can help you do both!”

project is like their baby, and we try to make it ours, too. There are certain THERESE stereoKALLERMAN types that still exist in the field, since our business is construction. Sometimes, our costumer assumes I don’t know about pool building, because I am a woman. I know what it takes, and sometimes I hold my

tongue when I come up against this. The advice that I would give to a woman considering opening a business is to always persevere. Never give up — it goes a long way! Make that your motto. Work hard and network — there are many opportunities to do that with our local chamber of commerce. They are very friendly and supportive. Tracy is an ideal

community to have a business, as there is so much room to grow and expand. First, pick a business that there is a demand for. Then get your money together, and get out there and make it happen. The commitment is really ’round the clock, so be ready for that! Therese Kallerman has worked with her husband at Pacific Pool and Spa for 27 years.

I have been in this industry for over 20 years. I am very passionate about my work and take pride that I am able to customize each clients look. I work hard to lead my Team at Rumors and to help each stylist grow. We teach each other and share knowledge together as a team. I believe in partnering and networking with other stylist and owners to make all our business grow. My only goal, when a client steps through the door at Rumors, is to give them the best experience possible, and make them feel and look fabulous. “So Spread the Rumor. And feel Fabulous about it.’’

ONLY YOU CAN BE YOURSELF. NO ONE ELSE IS QUALIFIED FOR THE JOB

Jean Boehm Broker/Owner

Thirty five years ago I decided I wanted to have a career. My decision to choose Real Estate was based on my experience having to sell my large home and scaling down to a smaller one. This was a very emotional and necessary move for me and my four boys. I realize how important it was to always communicate with the client, let them know you are there for them not only through the selling and buying but whenever they need advice concerning Real Estate. “Treat your client like you want to be treated”. I have always followed these rules and I consider our office to be very successful in every way. I give credit to the people I have surrounded myself with. I have always thought of the office as a giant wheel with every agent being a spoke, we are only as strong as the weakest link. How proud I am to say that I am the broker of Coldwell Banker T.V.G. still doing what I love to do with incredible coworkers that also love their job and they are good at it. The respect we have for each other and our clients is undeniable. The Welcome mat is always out, please feel free to stop by and say Hello. Your Family Realtor
