Gene Birk has been named Best of Tracy’s top community volunteer so many times that he said he would like to see the accolades spread around. He said he enjoys working with Brighter Christmas because he gets to work with Tracy’s other dedicated volunteers, including those who have helped feed and provide toys for needy families for more than 20 years. Birk was the director of Brighter Christmas for 31 years and has been a volunteer for two more years since Steve Abercrombie took over as organizer of the charity effort. Birk also named Lori Sparger, a 31-year volunteer, as one of his inspirations to stay involved.
