STAYING POSITIVE

Life with Portishead mum, author, inspirational speaker and businesswoman,Heidi Loughlin

Nine years ago Heidi Loughlin was diagnosed with terminal cancer and was given a life expectancy of around a year Today she?s living life to the full and she sites positivity as the main reason for her defying the odds

Heidi?s cancer is incurable, but thanks to the continued chemotherapy and her positive mental attitude (PMA) she is managing to keep the cancer at bay and make every day count Her blog,Storm in a Tit Cup,which she originally started as a way of communicating how she was doing, turned in to a valuable resource for others whose life is affected by cancer Sharing her journey, she is a much in demand motivational speaker and she has also trained as an insurance broker

Heidi says:?When I was diagnosed with cancer I had life insurance but no critical illness cover or income protection,so after undergoing extensive surgery and treatment, when my sick pay ran out at work I was up the proverbial creek without a paddle And of course,no one was going to insure me now the horse has bolted Obviously health is more important than money but you don? t want to be worrying about money when you have bad health Although it?s glaringly obvious to me now,I?d never thought about how I?d pay for stuff if I was ill Had I taken the right insurance cover,I would have been able to clear my mortgage and have some money to blow on holidays Instead I was left pondering how on earth I?d keep my house

There was also the question about getting any kind of insurance now I?d been diagnosed with a critical illness I felt sure there must be an area of the market where people with cancer or other critical illnesses, could obtain insurance that excludes their existing medical conditions I have since wound up specialising in this area and I?m finding it really rewarding knowing that if my clients are ever unlucky enough to get a critical illness (50%of us will get cancer and that?s before we factor in all the other horrors) at least they won? t have to worry about losing their home or lifestyle Just get in touch if you?d like help with your insurance needs ?

TRICK ORTREAT?

Our local radio,TV and podcast guru Ian Downsy Downs explains why he chooses treat every time

In today?s fast-paced world, taking a moment to treat yourself is often seen as a luxury, when in reality it?s essential for your mental wellbeing From small indulgences like a sweet treat to taking time out with loved ones, these acts of self-care are more than just nice-to-haves ? they?re crucial for maintaining balance in your life In fact it sends a powerful message to yourself:you deserve care and attention

Psychologically, small treats can act as a form of positive reinforcement Research shows that occasional rewards boost your mood and motivation by releasing dopamine, the brain?s feel-good chemical Mini moments of joy can have long-lasting effects, making it easier to manage day-to-day stresses

Ideas for treating yourself:

1 TIMEWITH LOVED ONES

Nothing refreshes the mind quite like spending quality time with family or friends Whether it?s a coffee catch-up or a walk with a friend, connecting with others is a powerful way to reduce stress and increase happiness

2 INDULGENTTREATS

Treating yourself to something delicious is a simple and effective way to boost your mood For foodies, why not pop into Shanicatti Shakes for one of their decadent milkshakes,or head to The Windmill Inn for a relaxed lunch with stunning sea views? Allowing yourself the occasional ?naughty?snack or meal can break up the monotony of a strict routine and provide a little joy

3 PAMPERING SESSIONS

Self-care doesn? t always have to be elaborate, sometimes,it?s as simple as pampering yourself with

a beauty treatment Tonic Hair and Beauty, for example, offers a wide range of relaxing therapies from massages to facials, providing a chance to de-stress and recharge A pampering session not only helps you unwind but also boosts your confidence and sense of wellbeing

4 HOBBIES

Treating yourself doesn? t have to involve spending money Dedicate time to a hobby or activity that brings you joy Whether it?s a quiet afternoon of reading at Portishead Library or photographing the ships as they come into the docks from Battery Point, taking time for yourself in a way that feels meaningful to you is a great way to improve your emotional health

5 NATUREAND EXERCISE

Sometimes, the best treat is one that connects you with nature Portishead?s coastal paths and nearby woodlands provide the perfect opportunity for mindful walking or gentle exercise Engaging in regular physical activity in natural surroundings helps release endorphins, which naturally improve your mood Plus, the calming effect of the sea breeze or the rustling of trees can do wonders for reducing anxiety If outside isn? t your thing, then our lovely podcast sponsors Parish Wharf Leisure Centre can help you out for sure!

It?s important to remember that treating yourself doesn? t mean being selfish or indulgent Taking time to focus on your own wellbeing ensures you have the energy and positivity to engage fully with the world around you So next time you?re feeling overwhelmed or stressed, take a moment to indulge in something just for you ? go on,treat yourself! Your mental health will thank you for it

TAKING THE PLUNGE

Swimming is a great way to stay physically active, whatever your age or ability,it could also save your life!

Learning how to swim and understand water hazards allows children to become more aware and cautious around water Swimming lessons, without doubt, provide us with vital water safety skills that significantly reduce the risk of drowning

Additionally, swimming lessons help children develop swimming techniques and skills that can benefit them throughout their lives These skills not only promote physical fitness but also enhance coordination, balance and endurance Participating in swimming lessons can foster a sense of accomplishment and boost self-esteem too

Whether you want to learn to swim, maintain and develop your fitness with lane swimming or just want to splash around with the family,Parish Wharf Leisure Centre in Portishead has a range of swimming and pool activities for everyone to enjoy Tracey Fowler asked Gwen Adamson-Dunn,a swimming teacher at the leisure centre, more about the swimming lessons there Gwen said:?Although we have adult lessons and baby swim classes, our main swimming lessons are aimed at children aged four and over There are sessions for beginners and then as the children progress they move up through different levels.

We follow the Swim England Learn to Swim framework to deliver swimming lessons but also use fun and games to build water confidence and promote being safe in the water We introduce life saving skills into the lessons as the children improve their skills and confidence and for the older ones, from the age of about 14 when certain stages have been completed, swimmers can go on to do rookie lifeguarding sessions which can then for some can lead on to a lifeguarding qualification

?Self saving is something else we include in the children?s lessons; this involves understanding what to do if you get in to difficulty in the water We simulate ?accidentally?falling in to the water, which the children always love and then demonstrate the need to relax, float and breathe, before swimming back to the side or to land

As children move up through different skill levels, they gain confidence in their abilities, which can also translate to other areas of their lives, but above all swimming lessons are a vital investment in safety, promoting lifelong skills and confidence in and around water ?

Parish Wharf has an online booking facility for swimming lessons and children who are attending swimming lessons at the leisure centre are entitled to free swim sessions outside lesson time To find out more about the swimming lessons, visit the Parish Wharf Leisure Centre swimming and lessons page at www placesleisure org

WALKIN? THE DOG

Skye Fowler shares one of her favourite walks with her friend?s dog Poppy

Poppy lives with her family, who I am friendly with,on Charlcombe Rise and sometimes when I fancy a walk I take her with me

Together we venture down to the bottom of Chalcombe Rise until the houses stop and an opening leads to a hidden haven for the public to enjoy with trees, bushes and grass

A path circles the greenery and we take the left hand track that passes a children?s park, perfect for any family to start or finish their walk with some well deserved playtime! We continue on the path as it bends round and we come to a small breach in the hedgerow and trees which allows us to glimpse cows in a nearby field and other wildlife at play.I tend to stop here for a short while as I love to watch all the animals peacefully going about their day and Poppy likes to have a good sniff around the trunks of all the tall trees

A little further along the path rejoins the track that originally forked right at the beginning of our walk

Heading forward as one path now,it is often overgrown and so it becomes a narrow trail Poppy always darts ahead while I?m navigating the foliage and uneven terrain, but she keeps returning to see how I?m doing before dashing off again, exploring as she goes

Continuing on we reach a small stone bench where

we stop to take a breath and look out over the Channel Poppy is usually buzzing with excitement at this point because she knows she?s close to her favourite place to play

One more little pathway beyond here and you reach a fork and can either go left or right Poppy?s tail is wagging so hard at this point and she knows exactly where she wants to go,so we take the left hand path which now offers us stunning views but we need to be careful here as we have to negotiate some stone steps as we make our way down to the beach

The beach has so many places for Poppy to explore and sniff, she loves to find little pools of water and is in her element if we come across another dog walker and she has a playmate to while away the time with Once play time is over and I?m ready to head back home,Poppy usually has other ideas Rock face cavities make excellent hiding places and she tries her luck, disappearing for a minute or two before I insist we leave

Relenting,Poppy joins me and we start our ascent back home A short walk back up the hill of Charlcombe Rise and I deliver Poppy back to her home I give lots of love and pets to this tuckered out little pup and say my goodbyes ? until next time!

JOIN OUR OUTSTANDING TEAM!

The rewards of working in early years childcare

Having recently extended its opening hours,The Nursery in Combe Road, Portishead,is currently looking to expand its team This month strategic manager Natalie Konarzewska talks about her career journey and explains how The Nursery has built its outstanding, dedicated team who all have a passion for inspiring the next generation

What m ade you decide to follow a career in early years childcare?

I had just finished working as a performer in London and (three knee operations later) I decided it was time for a change I wanted something rewarding and varied and as I love being with children I looked in to an early years career.

At what age did you em bark on this career?

I started as unqualified nursery practitioner at 24-years-old

Did it involve college?

Not for me it didn?t.You can definitely go to college, but for many people who might join the early years sector later as an adult, you should be able to complete your qualifications within your early years setting

Did you do anything job wise before that?

Yes! I trained and worked as a professional dancer I had danced all my life, then trained professionally in Cambridge at a Musical Theatre College from the age of 18-21years old After fishing my course I worked in London for three years

When did you join The Nursery in Portishead?

From the first day it opened which was on 2nd March 2015 I was working at another local nursery in Portishead where I had recently finished my Level 3 qualification in early years When I saw an advert go out for a brand new private nursery, looking for a senior member of staff to lead the toddler room,I thought ?bingo, this job is mine!? I LOVEthe toddler age,and I knew I was ready for the next challenge to take on a more senior role I went for an interview with Jackie,The Nursery owner and knew I really wanted to work for/with her She is so passionate about early years care and development and her vision was inspiring It?s now almost 10 years I?ve been working with her and I?ve never looked back

Tell us about your journey to strategic m anager

What a journey it?s been! I started off as a senior practitioner in the toddler room As The Nursery team started to grow,I naturally started to take on more responsibility which I really enjoyed I was promoted to the role of supporting the two managers before being offered the opportunity to take on a leadership qualification in-house - my Level 5 in Management in Early Years I was then given the role of deputy manager which I was thrilled with Not long after this I entered a new journey of my own into motherhood, bringing my baby to nursery while I worked, which felt rather empowering When a manager left I stepped up to be one of the two managers and my confidence and ability in the role really grew Before long Jackie asked me to become strategic manager which allows me to be more involved with the business and wider decision making It really is an amazing job

Why do you love the job you are doing?

Where do I start? The staff, the children, the families, the variety, the challenges, the laughs! Honestly, every day is just so different and I love the fact we are nurturing the future generations Working with such a caring and nurturing group of people is truly wonderful Walking through the corridor hearing children and staff singing and laughing just makes me smile so much Being a parent myself I can really empathise and connect with our families/parents and it is so satisfying being able to offer support and guidance wherever I can The children,of course, are the heart of The Nursery and watching them grow and develop in their own individual way is an absolute privilege

You, along with owner Jackie, have been instrum ental in building the Nursery team

What kind of people do you have in your team s and what are the qualities you look for when recruiting?

Our team is so varied, with so many different personalities, skill sets and qualifications Everyone is unique here and I love that Recruiting right now,we are looking for people with energy and ambition! It really doesn? t matter if you don? t have all the qualifications or knowledge It?s about the person

who is willing to ask the questions, the person who isn? t afraid to look a bit silly to make a child laugh, the person who is willing to learn new skills, the person who can be nurturing to a child in need, the person who walks in with smile and a positive attitude Is that you? If you think it is,call us now to see what positions we have that could suit you

SAHARA TREK 20 25

Raising funds for St Peter?s Hospice

Four local ladies, two from Portishead and two from Clevedon, are embarking on a challenge to trek in the Sahara Desert in February 2025 to raise funds for St Peter?s Hospice They will travel to Morocco and will trek, with their camel trains,up to 30km over four days through some of the highest dunes in scorching sun and braving the winds that are all par of the course The ladies are self-funding their travel costs,so the money they raise will all go to St Peter?s Hospice They each have a Just Giving page if you would like to donate,or perhaps you would like to take part in their huge fundraising draw taking place on 31st October when it will be streamed live as the winners are drawn?

CLAIRETAYLOR

?I?m walking in memory of my mum who was diagnosed with cancer,a returning melanoma, after 30 years clear After a couple of different attempts at treatment we were given the devastating news nothing was working and we were offered palliative care St Peter?s Hospice allocated us a key worker, Joel, who turned out to be our absolute lifeline He worked hard to organise pain relief, occupational therapy support, mental health services and was always on the end of the phone for me as well as mum At the beginning of October mum?s pain became unbearable and Joel organised for her to be admitted to the hospice The care, attention and facility itself were unbelievable We felt very fortunate to have been offered this facility at such a crucial time ?

CATHYSALISBURY

?St Peter?s Hospice touched the life of me and my family briefly in 2017 when my dad was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease He passed away eight months later It was a truly shocking and frightening time but St Peter?s Hospice,as well as countless members of the NHS,gave dad the care and compassion he needed.

Mum passed away just three and a half years later from cancer Unfortunately she was too ill to be moved from hospital to the hospice, however I know she would have been treated with the same care and compassion as my dad had she been transferred there St Peter?s Hospice provides a vital service to so many families and I know many people who have benefited from their incredible work?

LEANNECARTER-BROWN

For those of you who know my issues with sand, this challenge will push my limits Notwithstanding trekking 30k in the searing heat of up to 38 degrees, scorpions, spiders and no showers? did I mention the sand?

I want to give back to this amazing charity which was so,so kind and supportive during my dad?s 10 and a half week battle with pancreatic cancer in 2022 Losing a loved one to this dreadful disease is rubbish The continued kindness and support from St Peter?s Hospice throughout, the end of life care and the understanding was so much appreciated at our time of need ?

KATECHICK

?St Peters Hospice's expert teams provide support in a professional and caring way Their support is holistic and covers the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual issues that can arise as a result of serious illness They also extend care to loved ones and carers, providing respite during the hardest of times I hope our fundraising, even if in a small way, will help them to continue their amazing work, just like they have done for Leanne,Claire,Cathy and their families?

GRAND DRAW

Win a two night break in St Ives in luxury accommodation,or how about an indoor skydiving experience? These are just two of the many prizes on offer in the Sahara Trekking Tribe for St Peter?s Hospice grand draw, organised by Claire,Cathy, Leanne and Kate The draw will take place live online on 31st October For more information on prizes and how to purchase tickets online visit the group?s raffle Facebook page

Born in Bristol, one of five children,Benjamin George recalls a happy childhood although as a teenager he struggled to find his place in the world He knew wanted to do something big with his life and discovering exactly what, was all going to be part of the journey

Having the desire to travel,on leaving school Benjamin got a job in retail so that he could save money to allow him to take a trip to South Africa, where he spent several month volunteering in schools and health centres in disadvantaged areas

He told Enjoy:?This really broadened my horizons and made me want more adventures in my life ?

INTERVIEW

Drawing inspiration from a decade of diverse experiences,Portishead author Benjamin George talks about his first fantasy fiction book

You seem to have had a lot of adventures - was this just your life or was it planned to help you write your books?

That was just how my life went, although I always had a sneaking suspicion I might write a book I journaled ferociously during my travels, growing my wisdom and developing ideas and creativity This,as it turned out, helped my book writing tons

Do you have a ?day?job?

I am a freelance copywriter, mostly working with Christian charities I also work part-time for a friend who is a tree surgeon I love the balance of indoor and outdoor work and hope to continue that pattern for the rest of my working life, alongside writing my books and enjoying my family

Tell us about your book

The book is best suited to young adults, but will strike a chord with any readers and watchers who have enjoyed The Chronicles of Narnia,Lord of the Rings,or Avatar

SNIPPETSFROM RECENT REVIEWS

"Aquila is a truly astonishing debut novel It took me back to my childhood reading CSLewis and Tolkien "

AQUILA is a thrilling yet accessible coming-of-age story focussed on a young man named Klay, whose journey will help readers understand the role of adventure in their own lives Klay grows up in a relatively peaceful town on the tropical planet of Arqensia, but his safe little life is blown wide open just before his planned initiation into manhood, when his family?s secret past unravels after an encounter with a supernatural winged being Klay?s incredible journey of discovery is tied to the narrative of his ancestors and even the future of his planet,in ways that he never could have imagined Only with the help of his family, friends, and the Aquila, will Klay be able to defy the odds and fulfil his destiny

Klay?s journey is a symbol of what it means to seek truth, live boldly and encounter something truly transcendent It all sounds quite exciting until you realise what it costs to pursue these things Klay finds there is fierce opposition to him becoming who he was made to be He can only make it if he is willing to

"A wholesome, gripping & beautiful adventure be prepared to laugh, cry and not want to put it down!"

"I was hooked on this tale of friendship, strong family bonds, adventure, suspense and imagination Can? t wait for the second book!"

?A truly exciting story with beautiful and intriguing characters, set in a stunning world with natural beauty and yet, with some sinister goings-on bubbling beneath the surface I was hooked from the start and couldn't wait

to see where the adventures would lead A must read!?

?I can't recommend this book highly enough I was gripped from a few pages in - it was so hard to put down I haven't read a book so quickly in years! This skilfully told story soon drew me into the land of Arqensia and I became deeply invested in the lives of its inhabitants The book caused me to continually reflect as I read ?

50 YEARSOF CHRISTMASLIGHTS

Celebrating half a century of Portishead?s festive illuminations

This year,as they celebrate the 50-year anniversary of Portishead Christmas lights as we know them, the committee is hoping to make the town?s illuminations bigger and better than ever before

Portishead Christmas Lights Committee was formed in 1974 after the local council, which had until then been responsible for any Christmas lights in the town, said it could no longer fund the display

A band of cheery volunteers desperately wanted to keep the illuminations and make Portishead as festive as possible,so they took it upon themselves to take on the responsibility for the lights Year after year more volunteers joined the group and the lights have continued to go from strength to strength, proudly earning the title of ?The Best in the West? !

By 2018 Portishead had a ?golden mile?of festive illuminations stretching through our High Street, with even more Christmas lights at Waitrose piazza and a display at West Hill

Volunteers work tirelessly all year round to secure funding for the lights, ensuring health and safety requirement are met, maintaining the equipment and to ensuring the display gets better and better

As we celebrate 50 years of the independent Portishead Christmas lights, the committee hopes everyone will dig deep to support the displays and make it more special than ever this year

Here are some dates for your diary:

24th November ? Lights Up

Volunteers will be out in force with ladders, scaffolding and cherry pickers, putting up the lights that will shine until the New Year

25th November ? Switch On

The event starts at 6 15pm with guest of honour being Santa! MC Ian Downsy Downs will keep everyone entertained until the official switch on at 6 45pm, which will be followed by a short firework finale

8th December ? Posset Christmas Market

Portishead High Street will be transformed in to a Christmas street market from 2-6pm with stalls, fun fair rides and live entertainment

Corporate sponsorship for the lights is now invited; people are also asked to sponsor one of the Christmas trees in the High Street,or you can take part in the tree of light, all which will help fund out annual display

We will bring you more details on all of these events in the November issue of Enjoy

Meanwhile you can find out much more about the lights and how to support them by visiting www portisheadchristm aslights co uk or checking out the group?s social media pages

WEIGHTLOSS

Cognitive hypnotherapist and counsellor,Trina Gazzard, explains how hypnotherapy can be a powerful tool for lasting change

Weight loss and weight management are often challenging journeys involving lifestyle changes and for many people, psychological factors such as emotional eating, food cravings and deep-rooted habits play a significant role in weight management Hypnotherapy has emerged as a powerful tool to help individuals address these psychological barriers, facilitating sustainable weight loss and long-term weight management

EMOTIONALEATING

Emotional eating is a significant factor for many individuals struggling with weight Stress, anxiety, boredom and sadness can trigger overeating Hypnotherapy can help identify and address the underlying emotional triggers that lead to unhealthy eating patterns Through relaxation techniques and positive suggestions,it helps retrain the mind to cope with emotions in ways that don? t involve food, such as through mindfulness, relaxation,or physical activity

CHANGING HABITS

Habits such as snacking late at night, overindulging in sweets,or using food as a reward are often unconscious and can become automatic Hypnotherapy works by reprogramming these automatic behaviours, reducing cravings for unhealthy foods and promoting healthier choices For instance, under hypnosis,an individual might be guided to associate sugary snacks with discomfort and fresh, nutritious foods with pleasure, shifting their cravings over time

Osteopaths Kathryn and Steve Harper mark three years of owning Walnut Grove Clinic

This month qualified and highly experienced Portishead osteopaths Kathryn and Steve Harper are celebrating three years since they took ownership of Walnut Grove Clinic

The multidisciplinary clinic, which has built a solid reputation for supporting optimum health and wellness in Portishead, was opened more than 32 years ago by Zara Ford Kathryn and Steve were part of the passionate and dedicated team for 14 years before taking the helm in October 2021when Zara decided to take a step back

Enjoy asked the husband and wife team, who live in Portishead with their two children and their dog, what made them take the plunge to run the clinic themselves

Steve said:?When we took over Walnut Grove we had a vision of wanting to ignite a spark of community-driven ethos that continued to radiate warmth and care The reputation of the clinic preceded itself and it was important to us to ensure that continued whilst putting our own stamp on it ?

Kathryn added:?There have been some changes and some great achievements at Walnut Grove over the past three years and we're extremely proud of the team here We always felt very strongly the local community would benefit if both Walnut Grove Clinic in Slade Road and the Walnut Grove Studio in Paper Mill Gardens had public access defibrillators available and so we organised a fundraiser for this With the help of Portishead Lions Club we now have the defibs at both locations available for use by anyone who needs them We have also formed a Community Interest Company (CIC) as part of our social corporate responsibility alongside wellness enthusiast Candy Minshall This is a non-profit

making arm of the business that allows us to offer wide-ranging wellness initiatives that are subsidised or free so they are accessible to all, regardless of budget ?

Kathryn and Steve are committed to supporting the health of the local community in Portishead

Kathryn concluded:?At Walnut Grove we have a team of professionals who work together with a passion for complete wellness for our clients Most conditions can be treated and improved by the treatments and therapies we offer My message to everyone is don? t suffer in silence Too many people believe they have to accept aches and pains from everyday life or as they get older but in many cases that is not so at all We are here to help and are very happy to talk to people, without any obligation,to see where we can help improve their wellbeing We invite people to pick up the phone, drop us a line, email or call in to see how we can help Our door is always open ?

EASING THE PAIN

Acknowledged as highly trained and statutorily regulated health professionals, osteopaths are making a real difference to the lives of their patients

Osteopathy has earned a strong reputation for its effectiveness in treating musculoskeletal conditions such as back, neck, joint, muscle and arthritic discomfort and pain Beyond these, osteopaths also help manage conditions like sciatica, digestive issues, headaches and migraines

In 2017,NHSEngland formally recognised osteopathy as an Allied Health Profession (AHP),marking a significant shift in the status of osteopaths from being viewed as providers of complementary healthcare to becoming integral members of the allied health workforce This recognition highlights the valuable contribution osteopaths make to patient care and their essential role within the broader UK healthcare system AHPs work closely with other healthcare professionals such as GPs,consultants and nurses,to ensure patients receive well-rounded and coordinated care

Osteopathy is based on the principle that the

wellbeing of an individual depends on the health of their whole body from bones, muscles, ligaments and beyond They use their specialised skills and knowledge to deliver a range of hands-on techniques to improve movement, alleviate pain and support the body?s natural ability to heal itself

Being acknowledged as highly trained and statutorily regulated health professionals reflects the ability of osteopaths to make a real difference in the lives of their patients

BACK CHAT with Dr Jack

This month doctor of chiropractic,Dr Jack Cleeve, explains why you should think twice about keeping your wallet in your back pocket!

Imagine walking around with one shoe on,one foot slightly elevated and your posture all askew? You wouldn? t expect to stay comfortable for very long would you? Yet,this is exactly what happens when you sit with your wallet in your back pocket It might seem trivial, but this small habit can have a significant impact on your spine

When you sit on your wallet,it tilts your pelvis, creating an imbalance in your lower back

GETTING UP CLOSE W ITH NATURE

Friends of Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve launch new Wetlands Trails

This month sees the launch of a new Wetlands Trail at Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve

Wildlife is not always easy to see as it tends to hide itself away, especially as we get close,so the aim of the Portishead Wetlands Trail is to show visitors what creatures to look out for and where

While some of the wildlife is resident all year, many species just visit in summer or winter,so there will be two trails The winter trail will be displayed from October to March, while the summer trail will run from April to September

There will be 12 permanent Wetlands Trail posts installed by the 11key habitats around Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve and one post (no 9) on the ecology park Panels with interchangeable squares will explain about each of the habitats and show which creatures you might see there, highlighting fascinating facts about them

More than 75%of all animals on the planet are insects They are hugely important for pollinating plants and as part of the food chain Earlier this year, local artist and craftsman John Osborne, who runs Industrial Modern Furniture with his wife Karen, was commissioned to design and create a bug hotel to be included in the nature trail Karen told Enjoy:?The Friends of Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve have been a delight to work with and when John began crafting the new bug hotel we learnt so much,it was this magnificent commission that inspired our new Hexagonal range of beautifully crafted home and garden pieces?

It is hoped the new bug hotel will increase both the summer nesting and winter hibernating opportunities for invertebrates on the reserve An insect patch display panel on the path just in front of the bug house will provide all sorts of fascinating information about insects

You can find out more about Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve and the wetlands trail at www portburywharfnaturereserve co uk and to see the new hexagonal home and garden range by

BUILD

YOUROWN BUG HOTEL

Bug hotels provide insects and other minibeasts with safe spaces to shelter, hide from predators and raise their young Anyone can help them by building a bug hotel in their garden

While you can build a bug hotel at any time of year, autumn is when you can find lots of natural materials around to help you It is also the time when many animals look for cosy places to hibernate over winter If you have some bricks, wooden boxes or pallets to hand, you could build a minibeast mansion! Divide it into sections and stuff each part with different natural materials like dry leaves, twigs, hollow stems, dead grass, pine cones and bits of bark.Theses will all help to create warm, dry spaces that will attract different creepy crawlies like ladybirds, bees, woodlice and spiders You might even get frogs or hedgehogs

AUTUMN GARDENING

Enjoying the beauty of nature and preparing your landscapes for the colder months

As the days grow shorter and temperatures begin to drop, the garden undergoes a transformation that can be both beautiful and productive

Autumn gardening is about more than just preparing for winter; it?s a time for reflection, planning, and enjoying the beauty of nature By taking the time to clean up,plant new life and prepare existing plants for the colder months, gardeners can create a thriving landscape that will flourish come spring

One of the primary tasks for autumn gardening is to assess and clean up the garden beds This includes removing dead or diseased plants, clearing out weeds, and tidying up any debris that may have accumulated over the summer Not only does this create a more aesthetically pleasing environment, but it also helps prevent pests and diseases from overwintering in the garden Composting the healthy plant material and disposing of any diseased or pest-infested plants properly is essential for maintaining a healthy garden ecosystem

As you prepare your garden for winter, consider planting cover crops These plants, such as clover or winter rye,are sown in the autumn to protect and enrich the soil during the winter months They prevent soil erosion, suppress weeds, and when turned under in the spring, add valuable nutrients to the soil This practice improves the overall health of your garden and sets the stage for a successful growing season ahead Autumn is also an excellent time to plant perennials, shrubs, and trees The cooler temperatures and increased rainfall provide ideal conditions for root establishment

Another vital aspect of autumn gardening is preparing existing plants for winter Perennials should be cut after they have died back and mulch should

be applied to protect the roots from freezing temperatures This layer of mulch not only insulates the soil but also helps retain moisture and suppresses weeds If you have tender perennials or annuals, consider bringing them indoors or providing protection with row covers or cloches

Autumn is also a great time to focus on your garden's hardscape features Consider cleaning and repairing garden paths, edging and fences This is also a good time to evaluate your garden's layout and think about any changes you might want to make for the following year Whether it?s adding a new flower bed or creating a vegetable patch, planning now can lead to a more organised and productive garden in the spring

Finally, autumn gardening provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy the seasonal beauty of the landscape Late blooming flowers like asters and chrysanthemums can provide vibrant colour in the garden well in to October and leaves transforming into brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow add to the natural Additionally, planting ornamental grasses can add texture and movement to the garden, creating visual interest even as most annuals fade away

October is a great time to embrace the season?s changes and let your garden reflect the beauty of autumn

The team at Mortgage Style explain how a later life mortgage might be the right fit for you.

What arelater lifemortgages?

Later life mortgages give older homeowners the opportunity to borrow money against the value of their property, which is likely to have risen if they?ve owned it for many years

Howdolater lifemortgageswork?

Borrowing in later life involves taking out a mortgage secured on your property, provided it is your main residence, while you still retain ownership (some lenders will also do this on properties that are not your main residence)

The borrowed amount can be taken as a single lump sum or multiple smaller amounts

You don? t need to make repayments on Later Life

Lending Usually, the interest is paid when the borrower dies, and the loan is paid in full, but you have the option to pay if you choose to

Whydopeoplechooselater lifemortgages?

Using the value of your home to release funds into your bank account could:

- help you achieve a better standard of living by,for example, buying a new car or going on holiday

- pay for home improvements you want to make or adaptations that might be required to help you live

in your home for longer

- be given to your grown up children who are struggling to save a deposit for a home of their own

BEACH CLEAN

Children from The Nursery in Portishead kicked off the Great British Beach Clean week with a visit to their local beach.

A group of three and four-year-olds visited the two minute beach clean boards outside the Lido Café on Portishead?s seafront and arming themselves with litter pickers they headed to the beach to remove any plastic waste and pick up any litter

Gaye Holman, who heads The Nursery?s community engagement initiatives, said: ?It's important for our children to learn that by simply giving up just two minutes of our time, together we can make a difference If we can help the children to identify litter on our local beaches, learn about the importance of recycling and how this in turn reduces waste, hopefully we can ignite a passion for helping to keep our coastline and waterways clean now and for future generations ?

Earlier this year children from The Nursery also took part in a plastics clean-up at the town?s marina to mark Earth Day, picking up any discarded plastic bottles and placing them in a purpose built Green Seas Trust bin, which is made of recycled plastic.

Gaye added: ?It?s important to us at The Nursery that our children understand the need for us all to take care of the environment ?

The Great British Beach Clean is a week-long citizen science event (which this year runs from 20-29 September), organised by the Marine Conservation Society, where hundreds of beach cleans take place up and down the UK.
