ARTPORT 2024

Portishead Arts Festival returns for its fourth year

Portishead Arts Festival, aka ArtPort,is a community focused multi-arts event, which takes place annually in venues across the town over the last weekend in September.

LIVEMUSIC

Portishead Arts Festival kicks off with its live music big launch event on the evening of Friday 27th September at Somerset Hall with a fantastic set of bands that will get the party started with a bang!

And the live music doesn? t stop there; with 34 acts playing in a variety of venues all day and into the evenings on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th,the weekend promises to be buzzing There will be something for everyone, with soul,jazz-funk,pop, indie,glam-rock,sea shanties and brass bands all on the bill

Live music on Saturday will be from midday at the marina,in front of Hall & Woodhouse (or inside if it?s raining),with a great mix of bands to enjoy in the sun with a drink! This will be followed by top party entertainment at Clarence House in Portishead High Street from 730pm

Sunday?s music is spread across the town with chilled out live lounge singer/songwriter,jazz and smooth covers sessions at Impero Lounge from midday, brass bands and sea shanties in The Precinct area of the High Street (by the Port Bar) from 1pm and a great selection of upbeat cover bands at Sirens Calling from 1pm A fantastic set of high energy alternative rock bands at the Workmen?s Club will provide the end of festival close-down party from 7pm

Music director,Glenn Stephens, has arranged the list of acts through his Bands on in Portishead (BOP) Facebook group, which promotes the local live music scene and runs events including the BOPClub open mic night Glenn is also bringing his band to play on the opening night In addition,he has included youth bands at each of the main venues in order to grow and support the local talent

Throughout the weekend, the three main venuesSomerset Hall,The Beacon Hub and The Folk Hall - will host art fairs and exhibitions showcasing the work of more than 50 artists from Portishead and across North Somerset and Bristol

This year, the visual arts events will consist of a two day art fair taking place across the weekend in the Beacon Hub and a one day makers' market in Somerset Hall on Saturday 28th

Organisers Wahida Phillips and Stephanie Gay are artists themselves and have been delighted with the response from talented local artists and makers Wahida said:?The depth and breadth of artistic talent that is present in Portishead and the surrounding areas has amazed us and both events look set to be truly enjoyable ?

The arts fair will include painting and drawing, ceramics, sculpture, jewellery and furniture from 26 different artists The Saturday makers?market will

Excitingly, the Folk Hall will be the venue for the festival?s very first wildlife photography exhibition featuring the work of Portishead resident Sean Weekly

LOUNGE ART

Discover Portishead?s secret walk in contemporary art gallery

Have you ever noticed the sign outside a house in Stoke Road, just up from Impero Lounge, saying ?Lounge Art Show Open?? I?ve often wondered what it would be like inside but it wasn? t until recently I actually ventured in The door was already open so I moved in to the hallway and was completely astounded I didn? t feel as though I had intruded in to someone?s home,I felt as though I had walked straight in to a hidden art gallery, just like the one we used to have at the beginning of the High Street As I moved further in to the property there were works hanging on the walls,on shelves and lovely displays ? in the hallway,in the ?lounge?and in the back room I felt more than comfortable; it really did feel like I was in a public art gallery as I wandered around admiring all the different artworks At one point a lady appeared, our host I assume, but she just said let me know if you need any help and carried on

about her business It was a real treat,so next time you see the sign saying it?s open I urge you to pop in, it?s well worth a visit Starting as the walk-in gallery detailed above,Lounge Art has developed and now also provides an extensive online art gallery, featuring carefully curated original art and prints from exceptional artists www loungeart co uk

RADIO GA GA

Downsy prepares for a brief return to radio next month

When I was a teenage lad running ?Bedroom FM?(a record player,a microphone and a speaker that I used to point towards my bedroom window), I never imagined I?d ever make it as a professional radio presenter, never mind still be doing it 20+ years later I had a fantastic career presenting shows across the country, broadcasting from live events, up in a helicopter and interviewing all the stars of the day When it came to an end in 2021during a consolidation of regional radio stations,I knew, despite moving on to TV,I?d miss it very much,so I continue to ?keep my hand in?when I can

As an entertainment presenter you spend your whole existence looking at life through a different lens Can I take what I?ve just seen or heard and make it into a piece of content for the show? I remember sitting in a pub once and a guy was holding court, sharing some amazing life hacks like lemon juice removes highlighter ink from paper and putting Blu Tac on the corners of picture frames and mirrors stops them marking the wall On the breakfast show the next day we opened the phonelines and asked the audience for their best life hacks and we got hundreds! If I hadn? t been in the pub that evening, that piece of content may never have existed

In the trade we called this ?social ammunition?? things people can repeat and share, the idea being they quote the radio station as the source, creating some word-of-mouth marketing for the show At JACKFM we turned this into a major on-air competition by planting odd things around the city and seeing if people noticed We had a nun on a mobility scooter playing a piano,a chicken constantly crossing the road by the Hippodrome and a giant fish fishing off one of the major bridges We then asked listeners to call in with anything strange

they may have witnessed to win a cash prize Whilst many listeners noticed our plants, there were so many other calls from people observing other strange things that were nothing to do with us! It?s amazing what you can see on a daily basis if you open your mind to look for it

After redundancy my brain took a while to adjust to not having an outlet for observations I made I?d see something content worthy and go to write it down, but then remember I no longer had a show to broadcast the content on! My friends now tire of my endless anecdotes of observations of life, maybe I should write a book someday?!

However,I do still get the call up to do holiday cover when regular presenters are away and next month I?m back on Greatest Hits Radio for a week, sandwiched in between Ken Bruce and Simon Mayo, meaning the hunt is back on for content for the show So if you?re wandering around Portishead doing something interesting, beware it may end up as content on my show!

Downsy is on Greatest Hits Radio next month 7th ? 11th October between 1and 4 pm Listen on FM,DAB or ask your smart speaker to play Greatest Hits Radio

WALKIN? THE DOG

A tribute to Rosie by Chloe Wall

I used to love walking my black Labrador Rosie at the Kilkenny Fields before she sadly passed away in June I know this area has been visited in Enjoy before but I wanted to share my experience in Rosie?s memory

One of her favourite walks would begin at the top of Nore Road, past all the Georgian houses which look out onto Kilkenny Fields with the spectacular view of the Bristol Channel (sometimes filled with boats) In the distance you can see the two bridges that connect England to Wales We would cross the road onto the sloping fields and I would then let her off the lead

Rosie would gladly mingle with the many dogs and their owners who frequented these fields, popular because there is no shortage of vast, green space for all the dogs to explore and run around

On hot summer days,I would take her out in the evenings to avoid the heat and we?d catch the amazing sunsets which paint the sky after a long sunny day Chasing her ball through the long grass, which separates the top field from the bottom field, was one of Rosie?s favourite activities and she would often make friends with other dogs doing the same Among these dogs and dog walkers you?d also find avid kite flyers at the top of the field, making the most of the wind and the views Rosie would easily get distracted by these colourful kites and greet them with a friendly bark

On reaching the bottom of the field,we would

continue left down the woodland coastal path After around half a mile of tall oak trees, ferns and blackberry bushes and with the growing scent of the sea in the air, we?d turn right and head down to the pebbles of Sugar Loaf beach

From there,as well as the view of the Channel, you can see Wales and the tip of Sugar Loaf Mountain

This beach welcomes dogs all year round and it includes a tidal pool which becomes filled after high tide, perfect for dogs who love to swim; it always got Rosie?s tail wagging! Further along the beach,we would be met by lots of little rock pools on the shore which Rosie couldn? t ever walk past without exploring each and every one thoroughly With Rosie content after her paddle and sufficiently soaked,we would take the coastal path back towards the fields, often heading towards The Windmill Inn to reward ourselves with a refreshing drink (and obviously a treat for Rosie!) Rosie was always grateful for this rest before heading home as she had done a lot of sniffing, sprinting and swimming during our walk!

THECOUNTRY CANINE

A facility for dogs that keeps evolving

Bex Letts decided to train in dog grooming when her Cavapoo Rosie was about eight months old. She told Enjoy:?I had been considering the training for a while and wanted to be able to do the best job possible for Rosie I?m so glad I did now though as opening The Country Canine dog grooming facility has allowed me to meet a huge variety of dogs, get to know their characters and learn their different ways?

So how did the day care come about?

Bex said:?I was considering doing day care on a very small scale for our clients using the grooming services, however there was such a high demand we started building a unique dogs?day care facility which is constantly evolving ?

So what?s next?

?Again, because of demand and what our clients are asking for,I am now planning to open a boarding facility Being on a farm allows us to create spacious and homely facilities for the dogs It is also a huge

benefit if they are already with us for grooming and/or day care as they already know us and the place,so are likely to feel more settled whilst staying with us?

CARNIVALTIME!

The latest news from the new organisers of Portishead Carnival

Last month Enjoy brought you news that a new Portishead Carnival committee had been formed and the much loved annual event which, after being on the town?s calendar for more than 100 years had been missing for several years, will be returning in 2025

Here we talk to the core committee members who have formed a community interest company (CIC) and are working hard to ensure our town can once again experience the joys of carnival in all its glory

First of all let?s meet the main committee members and directors of the CIC,all who are proud of the community spirit we have here in Portishead and are especially passionate about carnival!

Saz Casey

Saz,who has events management experience in her background, spearheaded the idea to pick up the carnival mantel and run with it A mum of two young boys, she moved to Portishead around 18 years ago after marrying her husband who grew up here and talked excitedly about all the community events

he recalled from his childhood They both want their children to experience the same and are great believers in the fact that you shouldn? t moan about things unless you?re prepared to do something about them So,saddened that the town hadn? t had a carnival for many years, they decided they would do something about it!

Hayley Williams

Best carnival memories:The stunning street processions ? the creativity and effort put in to the costumes and float entries; the sheer joy!

Konnie Atkinson

Konnie grew up in Pill and was involved in Pill Rag during her childhood, but when she moved to Portishead she couldn? t wait to get involved in carnival As a young mum she was chosen to be carnival queen some 18-20 years ago which is a lasting memory Konnie says it was the feeling of coming together in a fun and friendly environment that drew her in to carnival and the feeling of being part of the carnival family. She wants others to experience that

Best carnival memories:Feeling like a celebrity for the day as carnival queen and seeing so many people from babies to senior citizens having such a great time.

Hayley has vivid childhood memories of carnival and is passionate about keeping those memories alive, while also providing opportunities for her children to make their own carnival memories Her late sister Tania,a former carnival queen, was one of the event?s biggest fans,so that holds special memories for her too

Hayley works with children and young people and spent many years as a youth worker at Portishead Youth Centre where a great deal of time and effort was put in to carnival entries year after year She is keen for future generations to enjoy the carnival community spirit which prevails with this event and is keen for the whole town to get enjoyment from it

Best carnival memories:The stunning costumes, dressing up, everyone pulling together to make it work, sitting on the field in the sunshine listening to music, watching hundreds if not thousands of people have a great time and everyone being friendly towards one another

thinking caps on We also want to support small local businesses, traders, crafters and makers,so book a pitch on the field to promote your charity, skills, side hustle or small business

Lake Grounds, wind its way through the High Street and on to the Show Field

The big fairground rides will be going Apologies if this disappoints some people but with the current economic climate as it is,many families say they just can? t afford the cost of fairground rides throughout a day-long event these days and so we want to see these replaced with as many community groups as possible, making their own games and raising funds for their own organisations and good causes Whether it?s a throw a wet sponge at a councillor or teacher stall,or a traditional coconut shy; a giant spin the arrow on a board to win a prize or a roll the ball in to a bucket,we want fun ideas pitched at reasonable prices,so get your

We expect one of the day?s highlights to be the big carnival It?s A Knock Out competition, sponsored by Mark?s Barbers. Safe, fun and incredibly entertaining, everyone is invited to put a team together with friends and family members of all ages and fitness levels,to join in the wacky and wonderful challenges we have planned.

We will have plenty of small food and drink suppliers, areas of shade and shelter and places to sit down and enjoy watching the world go by We?re booking local bands for the live music too So as much as possible we?ll be keeping it local and affordable Book your pitch now at www possetevents com

The procession will start at the

Schools, pubs, clubs, businesses, individuals ? we want you all! Join the procession with a lorry float, flatbed,a van, trailer, wheelbarrow, tractor, bicycle, mobility scooter or trolley.Enter a walking party or even an animal ? horses, dogs etc all welcome! We know it?s not easy and health and safety, not to mention insurance, is a headache for processions of this kind, but it is possible We?re in talks with local professionals to help us Portishead commercial insurance brokers - Aspect Insurance Management and local health and safety firm Safety Horizon South West are working with us to ensure we support all entrants to help them meet current legislation and best practice requirements Don? t let safety and insurance put you off, we?re here to help and where there?s a will there?s a way!

WORKING IN EARLY YEARS

Working with young children can be very rewarding says nursery owner Jackie Hardie

Childcare expert and owner of The Nursery in Portishead,Jackie

Hardie talked to Enjoy about the opportunities and rewards for those working in an early years setting

For anyone who thought working in a nursery involved playing with children in a playroom all day, you couldn? t be more wrong!

I have never made any bones about the fact that delivering a first class service in an early years setting is not a walk in the park It takes a great deal of hard work, enthusiasm, passion, dedication and commitment, but for those willing to give it their all, there are huge rewards to be reaped Helping children develop skills and knowledge they will use throughout their entire lives is just one of the many rewarding things about working in a nursery At The Nursery, our aim is to help create memorable childhoods for children and their parents Encouraging children to discover their individuality, while building bonds and friendships with others,is a core part of our philosophy

As an expanding nursery we are always on the lookout for the right people to join our team, qualified or unqualified Our staff range from qualified teachers and highly qualified nursery practitioners to those on an apprenticeship and experienced support staff

We understand that in order for our staff to give their

best,we need to give them the best and that is exactly what we strive to do at The Nursery Our commitment to our staff doesn? t stop at providing an excellent environment to work in:we strive to help every team member fulfil their potential, focussing on training, mentoring and career progression along with ongoing opportunities for continued personal and professional development

We value the ideas and suggestions put forward by our team members to enhance our provision and practitioners are encouraged to use the skills and experience they have to develop new activities within the nursery, that in turn will benefit the children Over the years this has ranged from learning a new language, mindfulness and ballet to a whole range of art and sporting activities

Any nursery is only as good as its team We know our staff really make a difference to the care we offer to our nursery children and their parents and we truly value that

If you think you have what it takes to make a difference to the lives of young children and are considering a career in an early years setting,we would love to hear from you Just give us a call on 01275 402140 or em ail m anager@thenursery uk com

SETTLING IN TO SCHOOL

Natalie Konarzewska, strategic manager at The Nursery, provides some useful tips to help children feel positive when starting school

We previously mentioned in Enjoy, how hard the team at The Nursery works to ensure our preschool children are ?school ready?by the time September rolls around

One of the keys to happiness when it comes to settling in to school is ensuring children are as independent and confident as possible Here are a few tips to help:

- Ensure your child knows where their peg and drawer are and make sure they can access them independently, this can make a real difference to how secure they feel at school

- Children adapt more quickly to the school environment if they can zip their coat up,fasten their shoes and change quickly after PE

- Playtime can be a daunting time for a reception child, especially if they are playing alongside older

students Speak to your child about playtime, ask them who they play with and talk to them about games they can play

- Ensure the snack and/or pack lunch you provide for your child is easy to eat If they have been given a banana, make sure they can peel it independently and yoghurt pots are the cause of many tears, taking a lid off a pot of yoghurt takes practice

WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE?

At the age of six Catherine Johnson dream ed of becom ing a professional writer, today she is an award winning playwright and screenwriter with the production of Mam m a Mia! am ong her credits

With her life today a far cry from the early years as a struggling playwright who was always chasing her next contract,Catherine Johnson now lives in a lovely home situated between Portishead and Bristol; her children attended Gordano School

Catherine discovered her love of writing stories at primary school and her ambition from an early age was to become a writer This continued throughout her secondary school days in South Gloucestershire, but as she moved through her teens, academia became less appealing to her

Catherine left school at 16 with no idea how to make her writing dreams a reality She worked in several jobs, including office-work,retail and bars, but thankfully she never lost her ambition to write for a living

Today,Catherine is probably best known for writing the book and screenplay for the ABBA inspired musical Mamma Mia! along with its film adaptation The film became one of the highest-grossing British pictures of all time

INTERVIEW

The original musical Mamma Mia! celebrated its 25th anniversary earlier this year Enjoy editor Tracey Fowler talked to the writer of the production to find out how it all began

By 1987 Catherine Johnson was starting to doubt writing could ever make her any real money She was married with a two-year-old son and another child on the way and although she had been writing short stories in her ?spare time?,one of which had been produced on Radio Bristol, she was starting to think about alternative ways to make a living.Things changed when she noticed a playwriting competition being run by HTV and the Bristol Old Vic This prompted her to write her first play-script The result was Rag Doll, which won the competition and was performed at the Bristol Old Vic While winning the competition didn? t exactly throw Catherine in to the spotlight it did give her the confidence to write more plays

How did it all begin?

Following the competition I wrote a second play,Boys Mean Business, which I sent to The Bush Theatre in London and it was chosen for production from the unsolicited scripts pile That was the real beginning for me.

When and how did you get an agent?

My first agent actually turned me down after reading Rag Doll, but when he read the script for Boys Mean Business,he offered to represent me before the play opened at The Bush He remained my agent until he left to pursue other interests and I have now been with my current agent for several years It was great to attend the 25th anniversary of Mamma Mia! with them both ? they have been so supportive and helpful to me

How did your career develop?

After Rag Doll was produced on stage,I rewrote the script for television,so from the start I had the opportunity to write for theatre and screen Boys Mean Business at The Bush was seen by the script-editors of Casualty, which led to a commission to write two episodes It was still filmed in Bristol then I had to learn how to write several storylines into a 60 minute episode - hard work but invaluable experience

After Casualty I continued to write for TV I wrote Love Hurts and Gold, while also writing more plays for The Bush and Bristol Old Vic

How and when did the m usical Mam m a Mia! com e about?

I?d written a play for Bristol called Too Much Too Young Judy Craymer,a producer, was looking for a writer to create a new story around the hits of ABBA and after reading my play she asked to meet me Judy had been trying to develop the idea for a few years We met at the beginning of 1997 and at our very first encounter the outline for the musical was formed The next hurdle was persuading Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus that my story would work Luckily, they took little convincing and with Phyllida Lloyd as director, the three of us pulled everything together to open in April 1999

Did you expect it to be a huge success?

I didn?t! I really enjoyed working on the show - and thought this would be a wonderful memory when I moved on to the next thing It wasn? t until the first preview performance and experiencing the audience reaction that I had any inkling that Mamma Mia! might be a hit,but never on the scale it?s reached

How do you feel about the success of Mam m a Mia! as it celebrates its 25th year anniversary?

Just very proud and lucky to be a part of it The show has been running for 25 years because of the cast members and because of all the people behind the scenes who look after every aspect of the musical So in some ways I don? t have much involvement now, but I can still feel a thrill when I think that every night, the words I wrote are being spoken on stage

What have you been doing since Mam m a Mia!?

Since Mamma Mia! opened in London, there have been productions all over the world I worked with translators and did a lot of travelling! I wrote the screenplay for the first Mamma Mia! movie, wrote two musicals for young performers and I worked with Myrtle Theatre in Bristol which produced shows with and for young people who didn? t have mainstream opportunities - e g looked after children, young

offenders,SEN and teen parents

Sadly,Myrtle lost its funding in cutbacks,so their innovative work was discontinued

I also wrote some plays and pitches for shows that didn? t happen

What?s next for you?

I?m not ready to retire yet I?ve still got lots of ideas,so I?ll keep working away at them until something lands with the right producer

Do you have any advice for aspiring playwrights?

Yes - keep going It is now harder than ever for new writers, but if you really love what you?re doing don? t let anyone pour cold water on your dreams I was told many times that I couldn? t be a writer and even now,self-doubt looms Be patient,be persistent and best of all, have a sense of humour

The original production of Mamma Mia! celebrated its official 25th anniversary on 6th April this year, only the third musical in the history of the West End to reach its Silver Jubilee. An amazing anniversary performance was held at the Novello Theatre when Catherine,Judy, original cast members Siobhán McCarthy and Lisa Stokke and Björn Ulvaeus took to the stage for a very special curtain call (Photo below)

EXPLORING TH E BLACK HORSE

Take a trip back in tim e to a country inn where it?s not unusual to see tractors and tethered ponies outside

The Black Horse, known locally as The Kicker,is a treasured hidden gem steeped in charm and character just a mile away from Portishead in the very pretty village of Clapton in Gordano

The pub dates back to the 14th Century and has a reputation as one of the most unspoilt inns in the South-West specialising in cask kept real ale, numerous ciders and home cooked food at lunchtimes

Built at the same time as the local church, the pub originally served a mining community and the pub name undoubtedly refers to either the ponies working in the pit,or those beasts of burden that would draw the coal to Portishead to be shipped Legend has it that the horses were greys (white in colour) but by the time they arrived in Clapton in Gordano they were black with coal dust!

In those times, the pub served a dual role in the community as both watering hole to thirsty workers and as the village ?lock up?where those committing misdemeanours could reflect on

their actions The window in one room still has the bars in place reflecting this historical use Today the pub has an additional use; it is also used as a polling station during elections, another example of the vital role it plays in its rural community

The current tenants are local couple John Beynon and his wife Allison, who bought the business from Nick and Jane Evans in September 2019 John and Alison?s

involvement only came about when an offer to buy the business was made by a Bristol businessman who was set on changing it into a full gastro pub Fearing it would be changed beyond recognition and much of its history and character would be lost, the couple say they feel this would have been almost sacrilegious as there are fewer and fewer traditional inns anymore

Passionate about keeping the pub how it was for the countless people who love the nostalgia and feeling of the place and with no previous experience in hospitality, they decided to go for it! Allison was a secondary school English teacher at the time and John came from a background in finance and had been running his own debt advice company for more than 15 years, something he continues to do alongside running the pub to this day

John is reliably told he first visited the pub in a pram in the very early 70s,the Black Horse being a favourite watering hole of his late father,Colin,at the time Throughout the 70s and early 80s he remembers regularly enjoying playing the table skittles and darts in the family room with a bottle of coke and some crisps while his dad enjoyed a pint of real ale served by Jack - who was the landlord until 1979

John also fondly remembers a traditional rite of passage when, for many years, the whole of Gordano upper sixth form would descend upon The Kicker for the afternoon after A level exams were over It must have been great for business and there is even an old photo of John and some mates on the wall of the snug from 1988! ?Looking a lot younger?John says! Nowadays, it?s slightly different as it?s a large group of teachers who arrive to celebrate the end of another school year before they go their separate ways for the six week summer break!

The pub saw a few different landlords after Jack retired in 1979 Bob Womersley ran the pub for a decade between 1979 ? 1989 Tom Shaw took over for three years until 1992 when Nick and Jane Evans took the reins and so

began 27 glorious years before retiring in 2019

John,Allison and their team enjoyed a few brief months of carefree ownership before,in early 2020,the news was awash with an unknown virus which had resulted in Italy being placed into something called ?lockdown?Who could have predicted what would play out over the next couple of years?

These were worrying times Not only for this establishment but for the whole world and when the UK was finally put into its own lockdown, everyone had to learn a new way of surviving John says it was like living in a bad sci-fi film from the 50s and,as far as we know, this was the first period of any length that the pub had closed its doors, including two World Wars

During that first lockdown,John and Allison decided to keep busy and made lots of behind the scenes improvements and modernisations and can now actually look back fondly on long days spent painting inside and stripping down the 50+ picnic benches in the sun while most of the rest of the world stood still

The second lockdown from late 2020 to April 2021was harder to

deal with, not only because of the returning uncertainty but also because of the time of year It also went on for longer and funds were getting very tight It was all seeming pretty hopeless Then,in early April, the news finally came that the lockdown was to be lifted

The couple say they will remember that first month of reopening for the rest of their lives! It wasn? t without its challenges because it was table service only and with such a large outdoor area,it meant having to engage nearly treble the staff usually needed Nevertheless, that first month was the busiest month the pub had ever seen! People,it seemed, just could not wait to get out and see their friends again and try to return to normality

After such a long period of darkness,it was the happiest of times, welcoming back old friends while also greeting lots of new faces

So,what is it that makes this place so special to so many people? The pub retains much of its centuries?old character:stone flagged floors, low ceilings with oak beams and period furniture including pews from the local church all lend to this old-world charm But for electricity, you might imagine you have stepped back in time! Add a glorious display of hanging baskets from late spring onwards, roaring open fires in colder months and a warm welcome all year round and The Kicker is a destination not to be missed

In addition to the main bar area where, during the winter, the large walk-in fireplace has a roaring fire, there is a cosy snug and a games room with a beautiful pool table Outdoors, there are extensive, attractive gardens with plentiful seating, several real oak covered areas with heating and a 10 x 10 metre Bedouin stretch tent which is erected every summer Drinks are served from two bars inside,an outdoor serving hatch and a devoted bar in the garden area

Clapton in Gordano is a famous stop for cyclists and walkers alike, with regular passers through stopping off at The Kicker for a rest on their adventures In addition, the 'Clapton Round' is a famous walking route taking you on a countryside tour aligning with the Avon Cycleway back in the village

The Kicker also welcomes an array of non-human patrons There are many canines who can be counted as regulars and who wait patiently for their owners to

be served in order to receive their very own doggy treat! Dog ice-creams also feature on the menu and are a popular seller in summer months! You can see the faces of some of these most loyal of furry customers on the pub?s 'Woof Wall':a photo wall dedicated to them Equally,it is not unusual to see all shapes and sizes of equine visitors The pub being in such an enviable rural location makes it a popular stop off point for horse riders in the area

The Black Horse also heartily enjoys a sporting occasion! Many and varied examples include regular golf days open to all, live rugby, crib tournaments, pool competitions and their celebration of Cheltenham Gold Cup Day has become legendary! The pub has its own boules court and customers are welcome to retrieve the boules from behind the bar to try their hand at this traditional French twist on skittles! The Kicker has a strong and long-standing bond with local rugby club,Gordano RFC who they are proud to sponsor and support

The pub caters for private hire and special events and can offer a selection of food and drinks options in either their beautiful countryside garden with bar or their cosy snug for more intimate gatherings There is sure to be a space that suits all needs What lies at the heart of John and Allison?s vision for The Black Horse is maintaining its traditional values, entertaining a vibrant, lively mixture of patrons, every one of whom adds something to the character of the place

One thing is for sure,The Black Horse welcomes you with open arms, whether you're looking for a lunch spot, quiet evening drinks, live music or a special event:The Kicker can cater for it all

If you know, you know If you don?t, then go and discover it! You won? t be disappointed!

Acupuncture is often misunderstood as a treatment simply for pain, but this is a myth! At clinics such as Walnut Grove, people are pleasantly surprised to discover how acupuncture can benefit various aspects of their health and wellness Rooted in Chinese medicine, acupuncture offers a holistic perspective of health, viewing physical, mental and emotional symptoms as interconnected This approach allows practitioners to identify the links between seemingly unrelated symptoms, often missed by Western medicine Rather than focusing solely on symptoms as isolated issues,Chinese medicine understands them as signposts to an underlying health imbalance Addressing the root causes means that treatments can positively impact multiple facets of a person?s wellness and state of being People often come back saying:?I just feel much better in myself?

COMMON COMPLAINTS SEEN IN CLINIC

While acupuncture can address a wide range of health issues, there are several common complaints that are frequently seen in clinic, which are helped by acupuncture including:

- Chronic pain including back pain and migraines

- Digestive issues like IBSand constipation

- Stress and anxiety

- Insomnia

- Menstrual and reproductive health challenges

- Support through life transitions (eg menopause)

As a complementary medicine, acupuncture can work well alongside other healthcare systems For example, growing research supports the use of acupuncture alongside cancer care,to reduce the side effects of cancer treatment such as nausea, pain, fatigue, hot flushes and provide emotional support

A Case Study

A lady came in after four weeks of migraines; she was utterly exhausted and fed up with being in pain Through a human-to-human conversation,we discovered various threads that had led to this point, experiences through life, relationships, childbirth and other aspects of health After one treatment, her migraines had dissipated almost entirely, after two treatments the migraines had gone Each session is a space for your body to be heard, what is your body telling you? This is an exploration alikened to peeling off layers of an onion Quite often,it is the physical symptoms that bring people to treatment however the real challenge will be hidden beneath In Chinese medicine, every physical symptom has a mental or emotional component to it The exploration of your body as a whole can reveal a deeper understanding of self and healing

BACK CHAT with Dr Jack

This month doctor of chiropractic,Dr Jack Cleeve, explains the three dimensions of stress

Stress isn? t just something we feel? it?s something we experience on multiple levels

Did you know that stress can be broken down into three dimensions: physical, chemical, and mental-emotional? Each of these can have a profound impact on your health, especially on your spine and nervous system?

Physical stress comes from poor posture, repetitive movements,or injuries, potentially leading to poor alignment of the spine that disrupts the nervous system?s function

Chemical stress refers to what we put into our bodies? whether it?s unhealthy foods, environmental toxins,or medications? which can sometimes lead to inflammation and affect how our body communicates internally

Lastly,mental-emotional stress involves the

pressures of daily life, which can trigger muscle tension and reduce the body?s ability to heal

Research shows that a combination of these stresses can interfere with our nervous systems, the master controller of the body This is where chiropractic comes in By addressing stress induced imbalances within the spine, chiropractic care helps restore proper function to the nervous system, allowing your body to heal naturally and function optimally.

At LIFE:ALIGNED,we?re passionate about more than just chiropractic; we?re committed to addressing all three dimensions of stress That?s why we offer a range of services designed to support your overall health, starting with a free consultation Interested in learning more? SEPTEMBER GARDENING

Enjoying late summer blooms, harvesting and preparing for the months ahead

September gardens can be a vibrant tapestry of colour and life, marking the transition from the warmth of summer to the crispness of autumn. As the days grow shorter and the air turns cooler, gardens begin to exhibit a delightful blend of late-summer blooms and early-fall foliage

This month is often a time of harvest, where gardeners reap the fruits of their labour, gathering ripe tomatoes, peppers and squash, while also preparing for the upcoming planting season

In September, many perennial flowers reach their peak, with asters, chrysanthemums and sedums showcasing their brilliant hues These plants not only add beauty but also provide essential nectar for pollinators preparing for the winter months The garden becomes a bustling haven for bees and butterflies, adding a dynamic element to the serene landscape

Vegetable gardens continue to thrive in September, with cool-season crops like kale, spinach, and radishes being sown These hardy plants can withstand the cooler temperatures and often taste sweeter after exposure to frost Gardeners may also take this opportunity to clean up spent summer plants, composting them to enrich the soil for future plantings.

Additionally,September is an ideal time for planting spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils and tulips By planting

them now, gardeners ensure a stunning display of colour when spring arrives

As the month progresses, the foliage of deciduous trees begins to change, with leaves transforming into brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow. This natural spectacle complements the garden's existing beauty, creating a rich,multi-layered environment

As the changes begin, gardeners begin to prepare for the months ahead.

Enjoy talked to Avril at Avril?s Fencing and Timber Products,a well established company with more than 30 years knowledge and experience in the timber and fencing trade,to find out what?s in demand for the garden this autumn Avril said:?We are seeing a big demand for sleepers at the moment as these are a good choice for creating raised planters We see a big rise in

demand for our made to order sheds as winter approaches too, as people want to make sure they have somewhere secure and dry to store away the garden furniture, tools and accessories Security is always high on the agenda as the dark nights draw in,so we see a surge in demand for gates, especially side access gates and suitable locking systems - the long throw lock being the most popular

Single and double bin stores are sold all year-round but especially as winter approaches No-one wants their bins blowing up the road in the late autumn and winter months, not to mention how unsightly the big black bins look in the front of our properties Timber bin stores blend in with the garden and are many people?s first choice when it comes to practicality and aesthetics We now have a good stock of log stores too which are selling well?

SELLING TH E FAMILY HOME

Tracey Fowler talks to local estate agent Sue Sadler about the unique service she provides

Sue Sadler caught my attention when I heard her explaining she is an experienced estate agent who specialises in senior clients who are downsizing (or rightsizing as it?s apparently now called) and are selling the family home they have lived in for a long time I asked Sue how this came about

?You don? t work in the property market for more than 30 years, like I have, without learning a thing or two about people and for me it?s the people that matter

answer to anyone about the time I spend with a client so I am able to go above and beyond, giving them the attention and support they need

Of course I don? t only work with older clients,I work with people across the board of all ages and from all walks of life, but I am pleased to specialise in downsizing for more mature clients as it gives me a great deal of job satisfaction knowing I have made a difference as they faced a difficult time in their lives?

Older people decide to sell their family home for many reasons, sometimes it?s because a big house is becoming too much for them to manage, some just feel they should plan ahead to help them maintain independence by reducing steps, stairs etc, while others may have current health considerations I also see a lot of people who decide to downsize to free up some cash for themselves and their family One thing I am very well aware of is that whatever the reason, selling the family home can be an emotional and challenging experience, especially for older adults who have spent decades in a place which is now filled with memories

Finding an estate agent with empathy, who is also knowledgeable and trustworthy is essential for them, someone who can support them every step of the way until the sale is complete and they are in their new home Someone who understands the emotional trauma they face as well as ensuring they get the best possible deal and can execute a smooth selling process I have been doing this for most of my career and recognise that some vendors need a little bit more support than others I joined Nest,a network of self employed estate agents, allowing us to work independently but with the backing of a larger organisation I don? t have to

BUSINESSSUPPORT

Tech-West director Adrian Williams explains how technology can increase efficiency and reduce costs

With businesses facing a storm of rising costs and low consumer spending power many are looking at ways to maintain profit without increasing prices through efficiency and technology, but just how can technology save a business money?

For most businesses there are five main costs ? operating costs (such as gas, electric, rent),supplier costs, staff costs, marketing and equipment costs Some of these,a business will have little or no control over, but there are definitely some costs that can be reduced thanks to technology without compromising on service or quality.Staff costs are rising steadily so making our staff more efficient by automation of many of the day-to-day routine tasks and use of artificial intelligence (AI) for creative processes is a no brainer surely?

Microsoft has been at the forefront of this technological efficiency drive and with the introduction of the Microsoft Power Platform organisations can significantly increase staff efficiency and reduce costs

At Power Platforms foundation is Microsoft Dataverse which allows companies to replace their multitude of

excel spreadsheets with a single, secure, central company database, which is linked to Microsoft Office 365 They can build mobile and desktop apps to interact with the data from virtually anywhere using the simple drag and drop development environment in Power Apps or purchase/download pre-configured apps such as CRM,marketing, customer service and field service

Once implemented, organisations can then look to further improve efficiency and automate business processes through Power Automate, create interactive business reporting dashboards through Power BI and introduce AI with Microsoft CoPilot.Plus with connections to more than 450 external applications, integration is also quick and simple

At Tech-West we?ve been working with these technologies for the past five years and their predecessors before that and have some great examples of where we have helped a variety of businesses increase efficiency and reduce costs. If you?d like to know more about the Power Platform or how your business could reduce its costs using technology, please contact us on 0117 235 9600 or email enquiries@tech-west co uk

Rich Powell from Powell & Associates Financial Planning explains how professional financial advice can benefit even the most amicable divorce

Getting advice from the people you trust helps you plan for the future- even when there are unexpected bumps in the road

When you?re divorcing people tell you to find a lawyer, but we often hear divorcees say they wish they had seen a financial adviser just as early in the process as,there?s a whole spectrum of money decisions to be made It?s not just about looking at the current financial situation,it?s about future planning When facing divorce it?s advisable to know what your financial situation would be in different scenarios,at the time and in the future,as you consider the process of separating your finances from your ex's

I can help you review your pension and map out your income and assets so that when you meet with your legal adviser, you can make informed decisions when it comes to the divorce settlement
