Portishead Open Gardens Weekend this year provides an opportunity to explore 14 varied, private gardens that are usually hidden away from public view
From vibrant flowers to lush greenery, these open gardens are a feast for the eyes and provide a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life
One of the greatest pleasures of open garden weekends is the chance to witness the sheer diversity of plant life Each garden is a tapestry of colours, shapes and scents From delicate roses to towering trees, there is something to captivate every visitor
Open Garden events also offer a unique opportunity to learn and gain inspiration for our own gardens Garden enthusiasts can observe different planting techniques, creative landscaping ideas and innovative use of space Whether you have a sprawling garden or a small balcony, there are always valuable insights to be gained from these visits From expertly designed layouts to unique plant combinations, open gardens weekends provide a
wealth of knowledge for both seasoned gardeners and novices alike
Beyond the visual appeal,a sensory experience awaits The gentle rustling of leaves, the fragrance of blooming flowers and the soft touch of grass underfoot can create a multisensory journey The sound of birds chirping and the buzzing of bees add to the symphony of nature, creating a harmonious ambience that can soothe the soul
Attending the Open Garden Weekends also fosters a sense of community ? something Portishead is proud of
Taking place on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th June, from 10 30am-5pm,this is the biggest fundraising event organised by Portishead in Bloom, the community group that keeps Portishead looking its best all year round
It?s a great excuse to get out and about in the fresh air, explore hidden horticultural gems and gain inspiration from some of the green fingered amongst us The gardens open to the public range from small, interesting cottage gardens to large areas with stunning views and wildlife Some will also have pets, while others will include charity stalls, plant sales and refreshments
Programmes cost £5 each and will provide unlimited access for one person,to all the gardens taking part in the event They are available now from Careys and Flagship Boutique in Portishead High Street,Heaven on the Hill at the top of Avon Way and from The Ship at Redcliffe Bay
One of the questions I was so often asked in my 25 years as a radio presenter was:?Do you get to choose the music??The answer surprisingly was generally ?no?
Commercial radio stations are just that, commercial and they choose music that targets the specific audience they?re after So if you want a 47-year-old man to buy stuff from the clients that advertise with you, you?ll play the songs he grew up with in the 80s and 90s If it?s the younger demographic you?re targeting, then you?ll delve into the charts and add in more recent tunes
As presenters,we were sent our playlists each day from the music department and not only did we have to JUSTplay those tunes,we had to play them in the order they appeared in to maintain the music director?s ?flow?Scheduling music on radio stations really is a heady mix of art and science It?s worked out how often you need to play people?s favourite songs so they hear them enough to tune in,but not so often that they get bored of them and tune out You tend to find more repetition on stations targeting a younger audience and a broader selection and slower rotation on stations with a more mature target
The only exceptions to these rules were request shows where listeners could choose a song (usually from a limited list of music that fitted in with the station style and even then,no more than four an hour) and perhaps the most exciting of all for me, was the summertime
It would get to about this time of year and the boss would send an email saying:?The summer list is now active, please add in summer themed songs to the
playlist to reflect the nice weather where appropriate ?
The summer list would be songs we wouldn? t normally play in rotation but summer/sunshine themed tunes that fit in with our overall sound As a DJ there is no better feeling than playing DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince singing ?Summertime?at 8am on a sunny June morning, knowing the commuters in their cars would all be tapping their steering wheels in unison to the beat as they soaked in the extra Vitamin D
Whilst music is very subjective and people?s tastes vary hugely, these seasonal songs do their job of evoking memories of endless summer holidays, trips away or family barbeques in the garden that just make you feel good; so at the radio station we?d jump on this vibe as soon as we saw the mercury rising and the sunshine pour through
At JACKFM ? I?ll never forget covering a Saturday afternoon show and at around 4pm just switching on the microphone, opening a can, letting the fizz sound bubble up onto the airwaves, pressing play on Katrina and The Waves ?Walking on Sunshine?and just saying ?You?re Welcome ??it was only a can of 7Up,but that?s the magic of radio, right?
Let me know your favourite summer tunes,I?m @downsyofficial on socials
I reserve this walk for Tilly and I for Sunday mornings because that?s the day my husband plays golf and he drives us from our Portishead home and drops us on Clevedon seafront before heading to the course
We start our walk at Marine Lake and Salt House Fields where we take the sign posted route to Poet?s Walk, a place that inspired poets and writers such as Tennyson
We take the stone steps up into the woodland and turn onto the right-hand path which leads to a view point at the end,a big stone circle We turn left up some steps and continue to the lookout and a few metres on take the second path on the left to the zigzag path immediately on the right,up through the woodland before heading back
This walk is little more than a mile but it offers something to interest both Tilly and myself as it
includes limestone grassland, woodland,a rich diversity of wildlife as well as the Iron Age fort,World War II shelter and stunning views across the Bristol Channel Tilly loves to sniff her way along the route and we often bump in to other dog walkers, which makes it a lovely sociable dog walk for both of us Back at Salt House Fields,we sometimes stop for an ice cream or a drink If we?re feeling energetic we walk all the way along the seafront towards the pier and might even take a walk long the pier while we await our free taxi home!
Clevedon Pier is England?s only Grade 1listed pier and celebrated its 150th birthday in 2019 Open seven days a week, there is a small charge to enter the pier A Victorian pagoda at the end of the pier serves coffee, tea, alcoholic and soft drinks, ice creams and cakes
Our May dog walk unwittingly suggested a walk through Fedden Village and the historical Nautical School when a public footpath outside the grounds is muddy Fedden Village is the name of a development which included the historical Nautical School and its grounds, which are private property with no right of way or public access except for visitors to the flats or the properties built at Chaplains Wood and Black Nore Point Notices indicating the property is private are clearly displayed at the entrances
We had no intention to incite trespass and would like to apologise to Nore Estates Ltd,the residents of Fedden Village and anyone else this may concern for our error
An alternative route to the beach and coastal footpath can easily be reached by travelling along Glenwood Rise and turning left into Pinecroft where a short section of path leads down to the coastal footpath

A look behind the doors of your local funeral director FH Halliday & Son
FH Halliday & Son has been in Portishead High Street since the 1800s and is owned by Glyn Lawrence,a direct descendant of the Halliday family and his wife Helen Son Harvey and son-in-law James also work for the family firm The family has worked hard to break down barriers in the local community to ensure that families feel comfortable approaching them and visiting their office and chapel But what goes on behind the scenes?
Helen explains:?No two days are ever quite the same in our line of work and being accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week (including Christmas Day) means we make sure a knowledgeable senior member of our team is available for whenever we are needed We use a private ambulance to collect the deceased and are very much aware we are dealing with someone?s loved one,so the utmost of care is taken looking after them at all times
?When families phone to arrange a meeting we ensure there is always a quiet, private space in which to see them We explain fully the procedures and help with any officialdom Every family is different and unique and we listen carefully to their wishes before offering gentle guidance ?
James continues:?Each day takes careful planning as we see a great deal of people during our day: those coming in to make funeral arrangements for a loved one or visiting the chapel of rest; florists dropping off tributes; people dropping in charity donations; vicars and celebrants and also those who are collecting ashes, all the while ensuring everyone has privacy and calm If someone organising a funeral is not up to coming in to the office we can visit them at home ?
Harvey adds:?At the age of 21I?m the youngest of the team and whilst my duties are varied they often centre around our vehicles, which I make sure are all
clean and well presented As part of my role I drive the private ambulance, hearse and the funeral cars?
Glyn picks it up here and says:?Being a small independent company, the team here has a strong working friendship and everyone is supportive of each other as well as our clients
At FH Halliday we also believe in community engagement and the importance of giving back to the community we serve That?s why we are (and have been for many years) sponsors of the Portishead Christmas lights and support many local activities, groups and causes including St Peter?s School?

This month?s favourite find in our High Street
Enjoy?s Tracey and Tracie love to explore Portishead High Street looking for anything that?s a little bit different? things that stand out from the crowd, whether that?s a service or product
This month Tracey came across this gem at The Sports Shop and this is what she had to say:
?I just love the tow float dry bag that I found in The Sports Shop It?s aimed at open water swimmers but I think it?s ideal for beach holidays and it will make a great gift too
?Brightly coloured,so that people can see you from a distance if you?re swimming in open water, this is a tough, durable, premium nylon bag with dual air chambers so that it also acts as a swim buoy You
can toss your keys, phone, cash and any other valuables in to the dry bag to keep it safe and dry while you swim and the dual air chambers give you extra security, should you need to rest,or chat mid-swim! There?s even a built-in whistle to attract attention should you ever get in to difficulty
With fixed handles, tether and adjustable waist belts the tow float dry bag suits all sizes
Call in to the Sports Shop and see for yourself! It?s well worth a look"
Portishead author Richard Collis wanted to be a triceratops, then a footballer, actor and journalist; today he?s a well respected English teacher
As a young child obsessed with dinosaurs,Richard Collis, who now lives in Portishead, yearned to be a triceratops Once his childhood fascination for dinosaurs waned, his love of football led him to dream of becoming a professional footballer, however once he realised there were several better players than him in his local team Richard decided that might not be an option
Achieving a good grade in his drama A level in just one year,Richard chose to do a degree in English, film and drama at university and decided teaching
English would suit him well He loved language, literature and got on well with young people and after completing a Post Graduate Certificate of Education,Richard secured a post as an English teacher at his old senior school
Since then he has married Becci and they have two energetic young boys Richard has had a number of senior teaching jobs over the past 20 years and has also taken up the role as main carer for the boys to allow his wife to return to her career In addition he is now a published author
Richard Collis talks about how a story he wrote years ago caught the eye of a publisher in 2023 and is now being sold in bookshops across the country
As a young adult Richard Collis wrote for pleasure He didn? t talk about it; it was just something he did He would visit a beauty spot where he?d spent many happy days during his childhood and write down the words to a story he?d developed in his head, one that involved a pool, just like the one at his favourite spot
What is the story called and what is it about?
It is a fantasy thriller called The Pool, aimed at older teens and young adults, but is a good read for all adults really Based in the fictional town of Fenwood, made from the resources of the land around it,it is a story of love and duty, honour and deception and the power of nature
When the Queen of Fenwood weakens with age and sickness, her daughter,Ivy,rebels against the traditions thrust upon her Struggling with the formality and responsibility of her duties she turns to the pull of the natural world outside the city boundaries, succumbing to the lure of the forest
It?s a story about growing up,about choosing love or responsibility, but ultimately it?s about the power of nature
Were you hoping to find a publisher when you started writing?
I wasn? t hoping for anything from it really,I just enjoyed writing it
The Pool was published last year, m any years after you wrote it How did that com e about?
After writing the bulk of it,life got busy? I had some great teaching jobs that I really loved; I got married, had children, moved from London to Bristol and then Portishead Life was really full on and so I just parked the story and more or less forgot about it Then an inset day at the school I was working at involved a series of workshops and I attended one presented by an author who had just set up her own publishing company I decided to send her what I?d written and the rest is history Her company agreed to publish it and so the journey began, then all of a sudden the story I had developed years ago was available in print in bookshops across the country and receiving great reviews on Amazon!
Will there be m ore books?
Yes I am writing a second book,it?s a story set in Fenwood but before the events of The Pool Some of the feedback I?ve had on The Pool has included a desire for readers to know more about some of the characters The second book is a chance to explore some of the characters further and provide more depth and background for some of them I hope to have it completed before the summer holidays What do you do outside teaching and writing?
I enjoy devoting much of my time to my family but I am also a keen adventurer, film fanatic and avid sports fan
The Pool by Richard Collis is available from Max Minerva?s bookshop in Portishead High Street and is also available on Amazon
Keep up-to-date with news on The Pool and on the next book by following Richard on his socials

It is a truth universally acknowledged that, sometimes, reality is stranger than fiction! Be it epic battles, intricate personal stories, or fantastical creatures that put those in Harry Potter to shame, you don? t need to look far out of your window to find mind-boggling truth Here is a small collection of some of our personal favourite non-fictions from the team at Max Minerva?s We hope you are inspired!
This is the book that has had the most impact on my life A devastating journalistic account of the AIDScrisis in America, from its very first case, through the worst days of the 1980s By telling the stories of people on the frontline of the crisis,it details the worst and best of humanity It will make you furious, depressed, comforted and hopeful It led me to volunteer for an AIDS/HIV charity, which in turn led me to attending counselling, making me a still very flawed but far better person than before
I?m not a habitual non-fiction reader, but absolutely raced through this account of the Russian attack of the small Ukrainian town of Voznesensk Harding was stationed in Ukraine with the BBC throughout the invasion and through personal accounts, interviews and military reports he tells this story with all the pace and emotion of a military thriller Dramatic, moving and darkly funny - perfect for fiction and non-fiction fans alike!
As a kid?s bookseller,I don? t often read adult non-fiction,but when Katherine Rundell (firm favourite in the 9-12 genre) released The Golden Mole,I figured I?d give it a go! Beautifully written,it?s funny and full of interesting details and stories about the animals that may be in danger of extinction Would really recommend for any nature-lovers out there!
This is the biography of the first black heavyweight boxing champion in history It charts Jack Johnson?s unbelievable story, from his parents?emancipation from slavery and his father?s time serving in the American civil war, through to his own achievements despite the brutal racial politics of the day Detailed, moving and a fascinating account of triumph in the face of oppression

National Picnic Week, running from 17th to 25th June this year, celebrates one of the nation?s favourite pastimes - the tradition of picnicking It aims to inspire people to embrace the beauty of nature, savour delicious savoury and sweet treats and create lasting memories
Here are some highlights and ideas to make the most of UK National Picnic Week:
Escape the confines of indoor spaces and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature Find a picturesque location such as a park, beach or the countryside and set up your picnic spot amidst the natural surroundings
A picnic is not just about the location; it's also about the food! Take the time to plan a mouth watering menu that includes a variety of snacks, sandwiches, salads and desserts Consider using local, seasonal ingredients to enhance the flavours and support local producers Look for inspiration online or in cookbooks and experiment with innovative twists on classic picnic dishes; try making homemade dips and unique finger foods
To ensure a successful picnic experience, make sure to pack all the necessary supplies Don't forget essentials like a picnic blanket, plates, cutlery, napkins, cups and a cooler for keeping food and drinks fresh
Take along some games or activities to keep everyone entertained Pack a variety of outdoor games that can be enjoyed by all ages, from classics like Frisbee or a ball,to sacks for a sack race or something for an egg and spoon race Organise a
scavenger hunt for the whole family or just take advantage of the picnic location's natural surroundings by going on a leisurely nature walk, trying to identify different plants, birds,or insects along the way
Remember a picnic is also a time for relaxation and leisure Encourage everyone to take along their favourite books, magazines or puzzles to enjoy during the picnic
Picnics are best enjoyed with loved ones,so invite family, friends or colleagues to join you Encourage everyone to contribute to the picnic by bringing their favourite dishes or snacks This not only spreads the workload but also adds variety to the menu.
Don't forget to capture the special moments on your camera or phone
As you enjoy your picnic,be mindful of the environment Opt for reusable cutlery and plates instead of single-use items Pack your food in eco-friendly containers and dispose of waste responsibly Leave the picnic spot as you found it, ensuring no litter is left behind
Great places to enjoy eating in the great outdoors courtesy of www visitportishead net
Whether you?re looking for fields and trees, rocks and sea,a secret hideaway or a new place to explore, there are endless picturesque locations in and around Portishead that are ideal for a picnic Below, our friends at Visit Portishead have kindly provided us with some of their favourites
Just a stone's throw from the Lake Grounds,at the end of Beach Road West,a track leads you to a designated picnic area which is Kilkenny Fields From here you can access the coastal path, wander to the Windmill Inn or just laze in the sunshine and enjoy your picnic
The views from Portishead seafront include the Welsh coastline and there is nowhere better to take in these far-reaching views than Portishead Point, better known as Battery Point It can be accessed from the steps that run alongside the open air pool and Lido Café,or from the path leading from Eastwood There?s plenty of grass and open space to spread your blanket and enjoy a picnic while looking out over the water
The seafront Lake Grounds are ideal for family picnics with wide open spaces, extensive views and flowers and trees, not to mention a lake with boats,a children's play park and a café You can also watch a cricket match here, visit the tennis club or check out the bowling green. There?s also a great skate park, free to use,for all ages
Another secluded cove and shingled beach ideal for picnics is Sugar Loaf Beach. This can be accessed via a lovely coastal path walk from the Beach Road West car park or field alongside the Windmill Inn Alternatively you can access it from Belton Road by Portishead Yacht and Sailing Club There is an old tidal pool on the shingled beach, which underwent some refurbishment by volunteers a few years ago Large rocks or a stepped platform provide the ideal place to spread your picnic blanket
From the path in the wooded area behind The Royal Inn,stone steps lead to the shingled cove with fantastic views across the Channel to Wales There are rocks to climb and pebbles to skim in between bites from your picnic hamper and if you time it right you can even watch the lifeboat training from here
www visitportishead net is a handy online resource for both residents and visitors, with the aim to promote Portishead as the go-to destination for tourism and business,to encourage visitors once here to use the amenities we have and to encourage people who live here to use what they have on their doorstep
Photos:All photos on this page are courtesy of Alan Harrison ? thank you Alan
I was delighted when I was invited to write the Posset Bites this month because I LOVEfood! It was so hard to choose which dishes and venues to write about but here are my top three
If you like your food with a bit of ?mussel?then Sea Rock is the way to go Me and the kids just love mussels so we head to Sea Rock and enjoy eating our fill while sitting looking out over the marina However,if traditional fish and chips is more your thing these get the thumbs up from us as well
Not that I?m obsessed with seafood, but moving on? possibly the best calamari I think I?ve ever tasted is at the newly refurbished Royal Inn.The place is absolutely gorgeous with stunning views of the estuary and if you want a completely authentic experience - the full ?Desperate Dan Dandy?shepherd?s pie, which has an actual lamb shank poking out the top,is not to be missed The interior of the Royal looks like something straight of out of Interior Design Masters and I love it there!
My absolute favourite restaurant in Portishead has to be The Port The pizzas are absolutely stunning The base is nice and crispy with a char on the outside; the toppings are perfectly drippy and the best charcuterie meat board, for this carnivore, sits well on the side, although if I?m honest my eyes are always bigger than my belly The Port is also my go-to for breakfast with the kids,as the waffles are immense and filling, with lush fresh fruit and lashings of chocolate sauce My mouth actually just filled with water while recalling this!

Last month we celebrated 33 years of what is now the Phoenix Bar
On Monday 13th May 1991,my grandparents - Monica and Tony Smith - opened the doors of Mon's Wine Bar & Restaurant.?The best steak in town?I?m so often told
Born Monica Holmes in Roath Road, nan,a former Portishead carnival queen, married my grandad in 1960 and they had two daughters,Dawn and Gaye, both who followed nan?s footsteps in to the carnival royal family!
though,on the night they noticed Victoria?s wine bar up was up for sale while they were out walking Within days it was theirs, the market stall was a distant memory and Mon?s was born
As time went on the restaurant closed and sadly my grandad passed away The wine bar was renamed The Phoenix Bar and today you?ll still find nan around, but my mum,Dawn, runs the bar
Most of Monica and Tony's grandchildren have worked behind the bar at some point and some of us still do!
Monica and Tony ran a popular delicatessen market stall together and later moved in to a small shop in the grounds of Clarence House Things changed
We?re currently in the process of organising a new and exciting refurbishment of the Phoenix Bar, extending our indoor space and transforming the garden area Watch this space!

The gag reflex is a natural defence mechanism, designed to protect the throat and airway from foreign objects, potentially preventing choking, allowing us to keep breathing An exaggerated gag reflex however, can cause significant distress to patients during dental procedures, making it challenging or even feel impossible for some people to tolerate necessary treatments
At Lime Tree Dental Practice I wanted to reduce the effect of the gag reflex to make treatment more comfortable and acceptable to patients and over many years I have combined several techniques to make this possible
By using certain techniques, instruments, materials and technologies,we can reduce the amount and size of items in the patient?s mouth making treatment
more acceptable For example:We can use our 3D intraoral scanner that makes a photographic 3D model of the mouth rather than using the jelly type impressions,in many cases This reduces the triggers of the reflex
Breathing techniques:consciously thinking about breathing through your nose during treatments can significantly reduce gagging In simple terms, you are consciously overriding your subconscious brain (that is trying to get rid of the object in your mouth so you can keep breathing) by thinking ?I can breathe and I am breathing?,in and out, slowly at your own rate
DIYacupressure:if you press your index finger into the fold in the front of your chin (halfway from lower lip to chin) you can put pressure on an acupressure point that helps overload the vagus nerve that controls the gag reflex Stimulating the vagus nerve in advance makes it less likely to react when items are placed in your mouth
By combining all of the above simultaneously patients are often surprised that they are able to have treatment they didn? t think they could tolerate
I hope these tips will help you or someone you know, achieve the treatment they need or want
If you would like to be a patient at Lime Tree Dental Practice, where we want to be ?the BESTdental practice for YOU?,please call our friendly reception team on 01275 840234

With summer fast approaching I look forward to spending more time with friends and family Older children have moved further afield and many friends now live a good few hours away To make the most
of those long summer days and really relax in good company, why not invite loved ones to stay for a while? Here are some top tips to ensure your guests, young and old, feel right at home
1.
Breezy bedding - it's all about keeping things light and airychoose cotton bedding in light colours with a low tog duvet I like to peg the bedding out in the sun before making up the bedsnothing smells better than fresh linen off the line For those cooler evenings provide guests with additional layers, maybe a traditional quilt or a pile of soft blankets at the end of the bed and a few extra pillows just in case
3.
2.
Keep it cool - summer temperatures can be so unpredictable and you want your guests to have a good night's sleep - make sure the windows can open easily to let in some fresh air and if possible install a screen to stop the bugs getting in I would also suggest a small fan in the room and if it does turn chilly a couple of wheat pillows or hot water bottles.
Practical yet personal - make your guests feel more than welcome with a few personal touches Fresh flowers at the bedside and a scented candle Depending on the age of your guests leave a puzzle,a game, some books or magazines in the room, bottled water and a couple of nice glasses on the side, maybe even your best friend's favourite shower gel and moisturiser with a pile of fluffy towels and some cotton wool balls
4.
Home from home - sometimes it's the everyday items that make a stay more enjoyable A good mirror in the room, with a handy hairdryer,a charging station for phones and tablets,an alarm clock and an adjustable lamp for reading at night
By creating a light and airy space filled with home comforts and practical items, your guests will feel welcome and cherished and will look forward to returning soon

Portishead is lucky to have a vibrant high street, even if coffee shops, estate agents and charity shops do dominate
With today?s cost of living crisis, most independent retailers are facing severe challenges right now Could these challenges serve as motivation for change? They could be a reason to think outside the box to help create and maintain a high street that?s a thriving hub, rather something in decline
Shopping in person provides a sensory experience you don? t get with online shopping; it provides social interaction and cultural exchange. My friend and Enjoy colleague Tracie, calls if ?frock touching? We don? t want to lose that experience or the diversity small independent retailers, most of which are deep rooted in the local surroundings and connected to our community, provide So,what can we do to help revitalise our town centre and preserve its character for future generations?
One local retailer recently told us of her plans to run a pop-up shop in a nearby town to help boost trade. Not a bad idea - is this something we should consider encouraging in our own community? Imagine our high street with pop-up shops and workshops filling every empty unit on a regular basis; our existing retailers hosting local artists and crafts people; collaboration events taking place with community groups, alongside local theatre productions Add to this the already popular regular fairs and markets held at community halls in the high street, such as those organised by Bryony Makes and the regular wellbeing events that take place at the Folk Hall,Somerset Hall and Beacon Hub and our town centre becomes a destination for discovery and connection Not only does this encourage more residents to shop locally, but it encourages more visitors to our town which in turn gives the local economy a welcome boost
The success of our town centre not only depends on innovative ideas and retailers being creative though, it relies on the power of community Come on Portishead, let?s see a renewed sense of belonging and breathe new life into the heart of our town and our other Portishead small independent businesses

Congratulations to Portishead Town FC after ending the season as champions of the Toolstation Western League Division One. Well done to all involved!

Portishead Open Air Pool has received funding for new power systems that will significantly improve their carbon output, making them greener and better for the environment
North Somerset Council has successfully secured funding to install a brand- new electric solar (PV) system ? which converts light directly into electricity at the lido Solar thermal power will also be added to the site,so that solar power can be used to heat the water
The Portishead Open Air Pool Trust ? which manages the day- to- day running of the site ? will be organising and overseeing the works and it is hoped the pool will remain open while much of the work is carried out
Introducing solar thermal power and a PV system will cut down energy costs at the site helping to protect the environment as well as the pool?s future
