SHOE DONATIONS PUT TO GOOD USE Tanya Marriott, owner of SoleLution shoe shop, has made her annual trip to Jolaurabi School in Mombasa, Kenya, along with her mum and a group of friends, taking with them hundreds of pairs of pre-worn shoes donated by local families. Since 2017 SoleLution has collected second hand school shoes donated by customers, to help Educate The Kids, a charity that helps children to a better future in Africa. Tanya travelled to Jolaurabi School in January 2018 to fit 300+ donated pairs of shoes. She fell in love with the children and their families there and vowed to continue to support them, her aim being to eventually provide shoes for all 800+ pupils at the school on an annual basis and this is now what happens. The group self fund their travel to Mombasa but fundraise to cover the cost of transporting the suitcases full of shoes. The volunteers will fit all 800 pairs of shoes, visit families and deliver food parcels sent over by locals who sponsor families in the African village, before returning home. BEREAV EM EN T SU PPORT Portishead Church of England has started a new bereavement support group on the second Tuesday of each month. U nlike Cruse, the group does not offer grief counselling, it offers a space where empathy, compassion and support is given to those who are grieving, emphasising that grief is something we all experience, is often a challenging part of the human experience and one that continues long after a funeral service. The group meets 2.30-4pm at St N icholas Church with this month?s meeting taking place on 13th Februar y. I t?s a safe space to talk, to just be, a space to remember your loved one, whilst sharing a cup of tea and maybe a craft activity. Ever yone is welcome.

RNLI DONATION Portishead RNLI has installed a plaque on the wall at its lifeboat station in Pier Road after a donation of £10,000 was received by the RNLI. The generous donation was made by Andrew Buchanan in honour of his late wife Marjorie. Mr Buchanan said: ?My donation to the RNLI was made for several reasons. My grandfather was a chief engineer with P&O and during the First World War, my father worked in marine insurance, I have always felt a close affinity with the sea and my late wife Marjorie and I enjoyed ocean and river cruising over many years.? Mr Buchanan visited the Portishead RNLI station to see how donations are put to good use. After showing Mr Buchanan around Dave Slack, lifeboat operations manager at Portishead, said: ?It?s always sad to lose someone and with Andrew donating such a generous amount of money to the RNLI it seems appropriate to have a plaque on the wall in our boat hall to honour his late wife.? The RNLI is independent of coastguard and the government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service.
