ON THE COVER baseball: the tenth inning A film by ken burns & lynn novick If you are a Ken Burns fan, you’re in luck! Not only does his most recent film, The Tenth Inning – an update to his 1994 series Baseball – air this month (b: September 28 & 29, 7pm), but during his recent trip to the Twin Cities, he also gave a Magazine an in-depth interview. Editor Lorena Duarte asked Mr. Burns about his love for baseball, his future projects and what motivates and inspires him.

a:

This is the first time you’ve revisited a topic; what prompted you to make The Tenth Inning?

KB: We never intended to do a sequel to the series. But it was realizing that these last two decades have been the most consequential in baseball history, dealing with the strike and steroids, dealing with the rise and influence of Latin players and Asian players. It's been an incredibly productive time.

a:

Ken Burns at Target Field

What is it about baseball that fascinates you?

KB: We like to think of American history as a series of presidential administrations punctuated by wars, but you learn very little there. If you cover baseball, you find out about those administrations ... the wars ... but you also get to deal with race, with tensions between labor and management, you get to deal with the exclusion of women, you get to deal with the nature of heroes and villains and fools in this society, popular culture and advertising, the grow th and decay and rebirth of cities as we build new ball parks, immigration and assimilation, these are all themes that get caught up in baseball.

a:

This is probably an impossible question, but among your many films, do you have a favorite? KB: It's like picking your babies. I'm fortunate enough to work with public television so I'm able to make the films that I want to make. I hope they each reflect the best of me and of that time when I was making them. Duke Ellington … said it best, when he was asked which was his most important composition, he said, “The one I'm working on right now.”

2

a Magazine

a:

Speaking of which, what is your next project?

KB: Next fall, we'll have a three-part, six hour history of Prohibition. The year after that, we'll have an at least two-part, at least four-hour look at the Dustbowl, still the largest man-made ecological disaster. The year after that we'll have two films, one on the Central Park jogger case in which five Black and Hispanic kids were charged with a crime they didn't commit, and then later on a major series – to equal in size, or greater than The National Parks – on the history of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, that's in 2013. Then in 2015 we'll have another massive series on the history of Vietnam, timed to the 40th anniversary of the fall of Saigon. And we're working on developing another biography, perhaps on Jackie Robinson or Martin Luther King or Ernest Hemmingway and also preparing another massive series on the history of country music.

a:

Why take on so much?

To try and unite this incredibly fractured country. Everyone is red state or blue state, North, South, East, West, black, white, brown – we always note the distinctions rather than what we share in common. And all my films have tried to speak to not to one particular group, but to everybody.

a:

or geography or political or sexual orientation, 99 percent of us want the same things for our kids. And that too often, in our media culture we promote those people who are the bomb throwers, who get to scream "fire" in a crowded theater … but it is not enough to just shake our heads, we have to do something about it. And I have tried to dedicate my professional life to being an alternative to that.

a:

You're well loved here in the Twin Cities, any final words for your Minnesota fans?

KB: I was blown away 20 years ago by a quote I heard from Tyrone Guthrie and he said, " We are looking for ideas large enough to be afraid of again." I heard that, I typed it up and I put it on my office wall. I see it every day when I go in, and I think about it. I've tried in my own work to do that and I think that's in some ways the mission of a, to expand people's horizons and to serve everyone. 2 Tuesday & Wednesday, September 28 & 29, 7pm

How do you bridge those gaps?

KB: Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., the great, late historian, was fond of saying that we suffer today from too much “pluribus” and not enough "unum." My job, for the last 35 years, has about unum. That is, to speak to everybody, to find a way in which words and images and stories can unite. To remind people that they possess –that is to say share – a past. And that no matter what your apparent differences of sex or race

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE SERVING KIDS & FAMILIES

WordWorld strengthening literacy skills, Martha Speaks building vocabulary, and this fall we will debut The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That! (see page 17), which will help children explore science and nature.

James R. Pagliarini

It’s back to school time, and this is the perfect opportunity to talk about a ’s commitment to helping the kids in your life succeed. Children’s programming at a and PBS has a long history of purpose and excellence. The story begins in 1966, at a small dinner party in New York City, where a novel idea was discussed: Could television be used as the great education medium of the future? And in particular, could it be used it to educate a new generation of children? Luckily for us, this was no ordinary dinner party, and one of its attendees was the Vice President of the Carnegie Corporation. Soon after – with help from Carnegie, as well as other private foundations and the federal government – the Children’s Television Workshop was created. And shortly thereafter public television first aired Sesame Street. Over 40 years later, PBS remains the best source for children’s programming on television. Today there is no other media organization more committed to – or more successful – in using the power of media to engage, educate and entertain our youth. Today, we not only have Sesame Street, but we have

Beyond the screen, there are even richer resources to explore online (tpt.org/kids.) Whether you are a grandparent, parent, uncle or aunt, teacher, big brother or sister, there is a treasure trove of games, activities, videos and articles geared towards getting kids ready for school, teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and enhancing social skills. And outside of PBS programming, here locally, a is making an even greater commitment. In our recently completed Strategic Plan, our board of directors and staff have set an ambitious goal: to re-double our commitment to kids and caregivers. In the coming months you will see changes in our website and our program schedules. We will be especially focusing our work on addressing achievement and school-readiness gaps among children in our community.

"Each month, a serves 100,000 children. The difference we make is palpable, from Gen X’ers who learned their ABC’s with Big Bird, to today’s preschoolers watching WordGirl on their computers. That commitment that started over dinner in 1966 is alive, and well, and vibrant. We are committed to you, to your kids, and to providing enriching content that helps their dreams come true." 5

When Worlds Collide

T

his documentary illuminates the origins of today's Latino culture through the largely untold story of the Americas after Columbus. The journey

begins on the streets of Los Angeles in 2010 and travels to Spain and Latin America, where contact first occurred between Spanish conquistadors and indigenous peoples. The story explores the most important consequence of the era: the radical change that both worlds experienced, resulting in an entirely new "mestizo" or mixed culture, an important part of the heritage of more than 30 million Latinos in the U.S. today. 2 Monday, September 27, 9pm

INSIDE

Almanac: 27 Years Strong

a

Almanac first aired on a in 1984. Now 27 years – and many awards – later, this iconic public affairs show looks forward to an exciting new season. Executive Producer Brendan Henehan spoke with a Magazine about what it’s like to be at the helm of this weekly program, and what viewers can expect in the upcoming season:

a: Any ideas about what will be the big stories for season 27? BH: One of the biggest topics will of course be politics. Since

1986, Almanac has issued invitations to the leading candidates for governor to debate on the program, and that tradition will continue this fall. In addition, the Almanac team will also feature debates for each of the other state constitutional offices (Attorney General, Secretary of State and Auditor). We will also plan to use the Almanac timeslot for several congressional debates. You can check tpt.org/almanac for the latest debate plans.

a: Politics are one of Almanac Political Reporter Mary Lahammer’s specialties. Will she be doing anything special? BH: Mary has been interviewing candidates for her "Minnesota's Choice for Governor" series. These biographical profiles of the candidates have been an Almanac tradition since the year 2000. These unique candidate profiles will appear on Almanac in October and will be compiled into a stand alone special later that month.

Brendan Henehan

a: What else do you look forward to this year? BH: We’re busy lining up some segments, tweaking the show format a bit, trying out some new things.

One thing I’m quite excited about is that this fall we’re shooting a new Almanac open in HD. So the scenery at beginning of the show will look better than ever.

a: Looking back at 27 years, what makes you proud? What keeps you going? BH: The Almanac team proudly claims to have produced more TV political debates than anyone in Minnesota. Of course it's very difficult to prove such a statement so we’ll continue to say it until someone corrects us! But no, seriously, I’m immensely proud of our team, who each week do our best to bring you the region’s top stories, while having a great time doing it.
