LUDLOW

FOOD FESTIVAL

September 8th – 10th

London Chefs Make Debut at Ludlow

Details are beginning to emerge about this year’s Ludlow Food Festival which runs from 8-10 September. There will be some fresh new names, chefs at the very top of their game and a real treat for baking fans.

Joining local Chef and host Marcus Bean on stage on Friday 8 September will be Ashley Palmerwatts, Group Executive Head Chef for the Fat Duck group. Ashley currently heads up the kitchen at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at the Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park. Also, taking to the stage that day will be Chantelle Nicholson, Chef Patron at Tredwell’s in London’s Covent Garden and Group Operations director at Marcus Wareing Restaurants. Also on Friday, award-winning food-writer, journalist and broadcaster Elisabeth Luard as well as internationally acclaimed food artist Prudence Staite will be sharing their passion and creativity.

There’s a lot to look forward to on Saturday 9 September with former Masterchef Professionals winner Mark Stinchcombe and former Great British Menu star Sue Stinchcombe returning to the festival. Radio 4's 'Best Street Food Winners' Hang Fire Smokehouse, vegan chef Lee Watson and one of the leading Television Producers in the food genre - Pete Lawrence will be on stage with his 'Allotment Cookbook.'

Sunday at the food festival has a really relaxed feel and it’s well worth visiting on this day with Michelin Starred and Ludlow Friend Shaun Hill on stage. He will be joined by Birmingham's newest Michelin starred chef Brad Carter, Great British Menu favourite Richard Bainbridge and Radio 2's Allotment Doctor Terry Walton.

If you love baking then you won’t want to miss the new interactive baking area ‘Bake in Time’ running across the three days of the Food Festival. It has all the right ingredients for a fun and memorable experience as its being hosted by former Great British Bake Off favourites, Val Stones (Fri & Sat) Howard Middleton and Sandy Docherty (Sat & Sun). News just in is that there will also be a new Live Fire Cooking stage, full details can be found on the festival website www.foodfestival.co.uk

Dugans Patisserie

Ludlow Food Festival was the UK’s first food festival and continues to attract visitors from across Britain and beyond. It's regularly featured in top food festival lists and has just been voted Best Food Festival in the Midlands. More than 180 of the region’s top producers will descend on the pretty medieval market town for the festival. The unique setting within the ruined castle, around the market square and the wider town makes it one of the most spectacular on the calendar. There are also two demo stages, master classes, tutored tastings, the famous sausage and ale trails which take you on a journey of discovery around the town and much, much more.

Producers include everything from local cheeses and charcuterie to the most delicious cakes and liqueurs. As well as food and drink we have the very best food related products too, including ceramics, chef’s knives and books.

Details are still being finalised for the event so make sure you check the Ludlow Food Festival website or their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram feeds for the latest news.

Bromyard Hop Festival 27th August

Bromyard’s Hop Festival is back for 2017 – and a local brewery is challenging rivals to race against its team in the town’s unique Hop Pocket World Championship race.

The 2017 Hop Festival is from 10am to 6pm on Sunday 27th August. It’s sponsored by Wye Valley Brewery and Charles Faram Hop-growers. Teme Valley Brewery have thrown down the gauntlet to other craft brewers to join in a special new ‘brewers’ challenge’ race. Festival organisers are signing up Race entries now at http://www.bromyardhopfestival.co.uk/programme/2017-regulations.html Race prizes will be presented by BBC Hereford & Worcester radio personality Toni McDonald. The Hop Pocket Race is the only one of its kind in the world, specially invented when the Hop Festival began in 2011. In the past, the Race has attracted crowds estimated at around 5000 to the town’s Broad St and High St. Teams of four run through the town carrying a full hop-sack weighing 70kg (1.5cwt). The main Race is open to all classes, and there are also Ladies and Junior races with a lighter

sack. This year for the first time there’s a Fancy Dress race, and the all-day programme of events also includes a children’s Scooter Race, a Vintage Vehicle parade through the streets, an arts and craft market, rural crafts demonstrations, a sale of decorative (and scented!) hop-bine products, and live bands in a ‘mini music festival’ in the town’s Market Square. And of course, it’s all free of charge!

h.Art is a must for anyone who has a creative leaning h.Art - Herefordshire Art week is sweet sixteen. If you are someone who gets a buzz out of meeting interesting people and seeing the work of talented creatives, this is your annual opportunity. Artists open their studio sanctuaries to the public and get together to put on exciting exhibitions in fascinating locations. Many of them only do this once a year, giving you the rare opportunity to talk to them about their creative practice and what makes them tick and of course buy or commission direct, so you get a real connection to the artwork.

This year almost 300 artists are participating at over 100 venues in bountiful Herefordshire. Many offer you the chance to get creative yourself with workshops on offer from drop -in sessions to longer workshops, where you can learn new skills. Book some leave, come on holiday, relax over two weekends, you’ll discover and experience a huge range of art, craft and design. Meet some wonderful artists face to face and see some hidden gems whilst you explore. “I find the whole weeks experience warm, welcoming and broadens my knowledge of local artwork. I enjoy every minute” 2016 visitor h.Art Guides including a pull-out map are free at various tourist locations from late July. But if you prefer you can pre-order a h.Art guide by post (post and packaging costs apply). Contact h.Art through the website www.h-art.org.uk

HEREFORD CATHEDRAL CELEBRATES 800TH BIRTHDAY OF ITS MAGNA CARTA

A special exhibition at Hereford Cathedral running from 24 July to 31 December includes its 1217 Magna Carta, the Charter of Liberties which brought to an end the civil war which the more famous 1215 Charter had failed to conclude. The 1217 Charter was the first to be called 'Magna' (Great), to distinguish it from the smaller Forest Charter which was published alongside it.

The cathedral possesses one of only four surviving official copies of the 1217 Magna Carta. Too fragile to be on permanent display, it forms the centrepiece of the exhibition ‘Law, Life and Landscape’, which celebrates the document’s 800th anniversary. The Forest Charter which would have accompanied it is lost, but the cathedral is displaying a late 13th-century copy in the register of Bishop Richard Swinfield, kindly loaned by the Herefordshire Archive and Records Centre (HARC). The Charter of Liberties focussed principally on the concerns of people of wealth, influence and power, but the Forest Charter touched the daily lives of ordinary people much more directly, reflecting their closeness to nature and the rhythms of the seasons.

The set of calligraphic ‘Flags of Freedom’ banners commissioned in 2015 from local artist Chris White to mark the 800th anniversary of the 1215 charter have been rehung in the cathedral nave. They incorporate important clauses from the charter.

Visitors to the exhibition have the opportunity to sign the 2017 Charter for Trees, Woods and People, spearheaded by the Woodland Trust on behalf of more than 70 organisations, which will be officially launched on 6 November, to mark the 800th anniversary to the day of the 1217 Forest Charter.

In association with the exhibition there is a series of six evening lectures with outside speakers and on Saturday 11 November a conference, 'Hereford and

In August 2017, on The King George V playing fields, The Herefordshire Country Fair, in conjunction with the Word War 1 Commemoration Committee, will be holding the annual Country Fair.

This historic day will be a major civic event. Alongside all the core traditional features of the Fair there will be educational displays, both in marquees, on the showground itself and in the main ring; where the commitment, hard work and sacrifices made by the civilian population during the war years, and how this contributed to the eventual victory, will be reflected. 1917 was a pivotal time – true hardship had set in and the results of conscription, rationing and shortages called for extraordinary efforts to be made by the whole population. Three rings of non-stop all-day entertainment

The Fair is now in its 39th year and promises a great family day out. This year we have a number of WW I commemoration events, along with the usual country fair favourites: terrier racing, working gun dogs, inter hunt relay, laser clay pigeon shooting, fly fishing and a parade of foxhounds. With over a 100 trade stands, the shopping and craft marquee and the fabulous food hall, the fair offers a great shopping experience. We look forward to welcoming you. THE HISTORY OF THE FAIR

The origins of the country fair go back nearly 30 years, with the very first show being held on the banks of the Wye, at Aramstone, Kings Caple, courtesy of Mr John Williams. John was chairman of the British Field Sports Society, which benefited from any profits generated in those early years.

The Fair is now a company limited by guarantee and the ethos of the fair, although still deeply rooted in field sports, has grown to include many other facets of country life, becoming a show case for locally produced foods, crafts and business. In 2013 the Country Fair elected to put surplus income into the Herefordshire Community Foundation, which is a Government-sponsored fund that distributes money to charitable causes in the county. Over the years money has been given to various charities in Herefordshire. www.herefordshirecountryfair.co.uk

SMITHS OF NEWENT AUCTIONEERS & VALUERS

I thought once again I would give readers a taster of a few choice items in our forthcoming antique sale rather than a report on items which have ‘been and gone’ at the previous sale. At the time of writing Smiths next sale is on the 21st July and has a special section for Coins and Postcards – however don’t let this put you off if this is not where your interests generally lie.

Smiths enthusiastic coin consultant is constantly trying to convince the other staff how exciting coins can be - but he is generally fighting a losing battle. This sale does have a good selection of early English coins starting with an Elizabeth I 1593 sixpence and a Charles II 1673 Maundy Money set, which do have a certain historical interest, as does a French Suez Canal token with a value of one franc and stamped ‘Subsistances’ to the reverse. The tokens were given to workers on the building of the canal to buy food, and was a convenient means of controlling the spending habits of men who might otherwise be tempted to use their money unwisely!

Of much more interest to the all female staff at the saleroom is a consignment of beautiful diamond jewellery including a fine Kuchinsky diamond set pendant on 18ct gold knotted chain. High quality diamond jewellery is selling well in the current climate and is the mainstay of many salerooms when other areas of the market such as ceramics and furniture are still relatively subdued.

A rare jewellery item which is also historically interesting is an early neo-classical style Berlin Ironwork necklace in it’s original fitted case. Berlin ironwork jewellery was first made in 1806 but during the 1813-15 War of Liberation against Napoleon the

Prussian Royal Family asked their citizens to donate their gold and silver towards the war effort. In return they were given ironwork jewellery which of course became a fashionable symbol of patriotism and loyalty – I can’t imagine the same idea working today !! The necklace is in perfect condition and is expected to sell to a collector for around £1500/£2000. With over 850 lots in the sale it is hard to describe the breadth of items on offer but in total contrast to the sparkling jewellery cabinet there is a lovely selection of country and rustic items ranging from some very attractive antique Windsor chairs, to a vintage potters wheel, antique butter churn and a collection of patchwork American quilts.

Of course at the time of reading this sale will have ‘been and gone’ but there is always an amazing selection of antiques and collectables on offer and with modern technology providing online catalogues and bidding there really is no excuse for anyone not to try buying at auction. Smiths next sale is on the 1st September with a special section for Oriental Items. For further information telephone 01531 821776 or visit www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk

Suzuki Swift

The all new Suzuki Swift - on sale from June 2017 is Suzuki’s third generation compact supermini. I recently test drove the 1.0 Boosterjet SZ-T model for a trek around Herefordshire, in particular up and down the A49.

Countypost Magazine

Our test car was the 1.0 manual Boosterjet SZ-T (on the road price of £12,999), which comes with rear view camera, front fog lamps, Apple CarPlay and 16inch alloy wheels.

The new Swift is around 10% lighter (only 915 KG for the SZ-T model) and 19% more powerful than the outgoing model, the 111PS 1.0-litre three cylinder Boosterjet turbo engine offers CO2 emissions of 104g/km - what all this translates to is a very agile and nimble car, that’s as fun to drive on the open road as it is to manoeuvre around town. Remarkably I came close to the ridiculous test condition mpg figures : claimed extra-urban of 70.6 and we got 68.9 on a run on the A49 ! I’d like to claim this was down to my driving, but think that the 1.0 litre Boosterjet engine and overall lightness of the car had something to do with it !

The Suzuki Swift the car you buy with your heart ! For more information contact: Stirling of Hereford Tel. 01432 374 700 www.stirlingofhereford.com
