Ludlow Food Centre Announced as Finalist in Farm Shop & Deli Awards 2018

The 2018 judging panel of industry experts met up last November at Windsor Farm Shop for a day of evaluation and deliberation. Secret visits and mystery shops followed over the next couple of months, before finally announcing the 2018 Farm Shop & Deli Awards category finalists. Managing Director, Jon Edwards shared the Centre’s delight in this announcement,

“We are thrilled to have been announced as a finalist in the Food Hall of the Year category at the prestigious Farm Shop and Deli Awards. The awards are highly competitive and have such a high standard of entries that to reach this stage is a great reflection of the hard work and commitment of our staff in continuing to bring great food to our customers. We have our fingers crossed now for the 16th April when the final winner will be announced.”

Fostering is all about families, and about finding the right families to give vulnerable youngsters long term care and support in a loving home to enable them to reach their potential.

Red Kite Fostering was set up in 2011 in the heart of rural Herefordshire and is an independent family run fostering agency with an impressive track record of successful placements behind them.

Each family is allocated a Supervising Social Worker who is there, alongside the highly motivated multidisciplinary team, to provide all the training and support foster carers may need. They are there to help you, guide you and sing your praises as a child thrives in your care.

They are always on hand, or at the end of a phone, 24 hours a day to help with any of the day to day issues or emergencies that may crop up. This level of support means that Red Kite’s foster carers are able to relax and deliver the help their foster children need with confidence, resulting in happier and more secure outcomes for the children.

Tony Collier told us proudly, “Our 'Team around the Family' way of working provides a loving, safe, sta-

ble and nurturing home promoting a sense of wellbeing and happiness. The fundamental principle behind our work at Red Kite Fostering is that by working together we can facilitate real, lasting change in the children and young people entrusted to our care.”

It is good to know that a team like Red Kite are there to help, but the need for extra foster carers is very great and Tony would welcome the opportunity for an informal chat about what is involved if you have ever wondered about what it takes to become a foster carer.

As Tony said, just as children come in all shapes and sizes, so do foster families, there is no one ideal shape of foster parent, common sense and a sense of humour are key, and as long as you have a willingness to learn and a keen desire to help children then Red Kite can provide the rest.

Black & White House Museum

History Lives Here

Since its re-opening, this recently featured Hereford city centre refurbished museum has attracted over 1400 visitors in April alone.

The Black & White House Museum is a very welcoming place in the heart of the city. The house was built in 1621, and the museum gives an insight into 17th century life: after passing through the reception area and shop (where you can buy replica goods from the civil war period), the ground floor room tells the history of the period, with plenty of information panels and a model of Hereford at the time.

Moving upstairs to the re-created rooms from the 1640s, the museum visit becomes a lot more interactive: there is a dressing up rail of clothes, and visitors of all ages are encouraged to try them on and even to have pictures taken around the dining table.

The second floor has reproduction furniture and visitors are encouraged to be hands-on here - try out the bed and see how it was put together, discover what the bedstaves were for (to loosen up the bedding), and to examine (but not use!) the ‘stool of ease.’ Finally, don’t miss the prodigal son story on the wall hangings in the smaller bedroom.

The museum is a welcome slice of history in the centre of the commercial heart of Hereford and well worth the visit.

HEREFORD CATHEDRAL

Poppies: Weeping Window 14 March – 29 April 2018

Presented by 14-18 NOW, Hereford Cathedral and Herefordshire Council bring Poppies: Weeping Window to Hereford, offering people an amazing opportunity to experience this sculpture.

The sculpture by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper is one of two touring as part of 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary. As with all 14-18 NOW projects, the presentation of this sculpture to new audiences across the UK aims to prompt a new, nationwide dialogue around the legacy of the war. Weeping Window is a cascade comprising several thousand handmade ceramic poppies seen pouring from a high window to the ground below. Together with a second sculptural work, Wave, they formed part of the iconic installation ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ at the Tower of London in 2014, and were visited by over five million people.

The beautiful historic façade of the cathedral provides a stunning backdrop for Weeping Window.

The Dean of Hereford said: “It is an enormous privilege for us at Hereford Cathedral to be the first venue in this final year of the 14-18 NOW tour to host Poppies: Weeping Window. As expected, it looks stunning, with the poppies cascading down the staircase turret of our north transept. We know Weeping Window will be a poignant and inspiring focus for prayer and reflection over the next seven weeks for many people from across our city and county and far beyond. We are immensely grateful to all those who have helped to bring this very special work of art to Hereford. We look forward to welcoming the visitors who will come to see it.”

Weeping Window is from the installation ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ – poppies and original concept by artist Paul Cummins and installation designed by Tom Piper – by Paul Cummins Ceramics Limited In conjunction with Historic Royal Palaces, originally at HM Tower of London 2014.

Hampton Court Castle & Parklands A magnificent 15th Century medieval castle, award-winning gardens and parkland, all nestled in the beautiful county of Herefordshire. Hampton Court Castle has an interesting history, which can be explored on one of the tours led by a team of knowledgeable guides.

The gardens at Hampton Court are one of the most ambitious garden creations of our time. Original Victorian garden walls enclose stunning flower gardens divided by canals, island pavilions and impressive water features. The Kitchen Garden is an ornamental garden of fruit and vegetables, supplying produce to the Orangery cafe for its seasonal menu wherever possible.

There is a maze of a thousand yews with a gothic tower at its centre. Climb to the top for a panoramic view of the gardens or descend underground to a tunnel that leads to a waterfall in the Sunken Garden. Beautiful herbaceous borders stretch out from a 150 old Wisteria Arch, which then leads to

vast lawns and ancient trees alongside the castle. Explore beyond the lawns to find the riverside and woodland walks. The Orangery Cafe is in the impressive conservatory designed by Joseph Paxton in 1846. Delicious lunches, homemade cakes and cream teas can be enjoyed here, with picturesque views across the estate. Enjoy delicious, local ice cream served in the Arkwright Courtyard.

Complete your day out by visiting the beautiful Gift Shop where you will find gifts, plants to remind you of your visit and garden ornamentals. . Hampton Court Castle, Gardens and Parkland can be found in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside between Hereford and Leominster (close to the junction of the A49 and A417). Recipe of the Month

Bourbon glazed pork belly with spiced carrot & celeriac slaw With thanks to the Lion at Leintwardine

Makes about 10 skewers. These are ideal to serve as a started or as a party nibble, the spices and glaze give the pork a wonderful flavour.

Ingredients - For the pork • 1kg of raw pork belly

Ingredients - For the slaw • ½ a small celeriac, grated

• 200ml honey

• 1 carrot, grated

• 200ml pork or chicken stock

• 1 chopped red chilli

• 200ml bourbon

• 1 banana shallot thinly sliced

• 1 tsp freshly chopped ginger

• 4 spring onions finely sliced

• Pinch of five spice

• 1 tblsp chopped coriander

• 1 tsp chopped garlic • Salt and pepper

• Cocktail sticks soaked in water

Method

• 1 tblsp olive oil or French dressing • Salt & pepper

• Pinch of five spice

First mix the wet pork ingredients together in a bowl (leaving out the cocktail sticks) and cover the pork belly and allow to marinade in a fridge for 24 hours. Place the pork and all the juices into a baking tray, cover with foil and slowly cook in a low oven at 120°c for 5 hours. You will need to baste a couple of times during cooking.

Once cooked, remove the pork from the juices keeping the juices to one side. Refrigerate the pork until fully cooled.

Once cooled and set, carefully remove the pork skin and dice the pork into roughly 1cm dice. Skewer 2 dice onto the cocktail sticks Place the skewers onto a tray and spoon the retained marinade over the top and reheat in an oven at 180°c for 10 minutes

Whilst the skewers are reheating make up the slaw

Add all the ingredients into a bowl and mix well. Add salt and pepper to taste.

The fresher you make the slaw the better as it will discolour quite quickly.

SMITHS OF NEWENT AUCTIONEERS & VALUERS

It has been a very eventful month at Smiths Auctions and after having worked incredibly hard to prepare a fantastic sale of over 1000 lots we were dismayed to suddenly be facing a forecast of snow and blizzard conditions. The timing could not have been worse and by Thursday morning it became clear that holding the sale on Friday was not going to be a sensible option.

Thankfully due to the wonders of technology we were able to contact almost all our potential buyers by email and of course the website was easily amended to announce that the sale would be postponed until the following Monday.

Viewing then continued for the brave hearted during Thursday and two of us stayed overnight in Newent so that we could be there Friday to greet anyone who had not heard the news. In the end the weather was so bad nobody expected the sale to go ahead, but we were surprised by the number of keen customers who turned up to continue viewing despite the snow - most were on foot but some came by car! However with the road conditions deteriorating my colleague and I decided to call it a day at 2pm and we made our treacherous way home to safety and warmth.

The silver lining to my story is that - having had the fully illustrated catalogue online for a further weekend (especially a weekend with terrible weather) we attracted a huge number of extra online buyers and, whilst we are normally proud to have around four hundred bidders online, we actually ended up with well over seven hundred! As a result of the increased internet activity the sale sold like wildfire and perversely it turned out to be one of our best sales of the year.

Top price of the day was paid for a fine three stone diamond ring with a total diamond weight of 2.5 carats which made £4000 and this was closely followed by a lovely one carat solitaire diamond ring which made £3000. However my favourite item in the sale was a pair of ‘pea sized’ wooden good luck charms of a type worn by soldiers in WWI. The funny little novelties had glass eyes and gold arms and legs and were stamped to the backs ‘Touch Wud’ – the joke being that they are reaching up to touch their own little wooden heads. Estimated at £80/£120 they sold to commission bidder for £280. Perhaps I should try and arrange a massive snowstorm every month !

Smiths are inviting antique & collectable entries for their May sale on the 10th, 12th, 17th & 19th April 10am-3pm or by appointment. For all enquiries please telephone 01531 821776 or visit www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk

Create Something New this Easter at the Ironbridge Gorge Museums

30th March – 15th April

Take part in themed workshops and create something new during the Easter break at the Ironbridge Gorge Museums then join in traditional Victorian style activities and follow family trails.

Get creative at Enginuity and join workshops using pneumatic power and craft materials to make fun bunnies that pop out of their burrows and eggs that crack open to reveal the surprise inside. At Coalport China Museum decorate a money box, fridge magnet or paper plate with baby animals using quick drying paint.

Make the most of daytime visits to all 10 museums with a great value Annual Passport Ticket; individual museum entry tickets are also available; some activities carry an extra charge and activities vary day to day. For details and opening times Tel: 01952 433 424 or visit www.ironbridge.org.uk

Visit the Print Shop at Blists Hill Victorian Town

Visit the Print Shop at Blists Hill Victorian Town and learn how the development of the printing press changed the world, then head to the Good’s Shed and have a go at creating a poster. On some days see chicks’ eggs being kept warm in the incubator; discover how to see inside and, if you are lucky, watch them hatch. Then find out how chocolate eggs are made and follow a trail searching for hidden Easter bunnies.

For one day only on Saturday, 14th April, the largest mechanical puppet ever constructed in Britain, the Man Engine, is coming to Blists Hill. With lots of fun family activities the daytime event is great for children and the evening event promises to be spectacular. Annual Passports are not valid for these events and tickets should be purchased in advance at www.ironbridge.org.uk

Over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, you can also watch and join in the unusual Victorian pastime of egg dancing and an Easter bonnet parade.

Hyundai Kona

Countypost Magazine

The new Kona from Hyundai joins the competitive compact SUV sector of the market.

Prices start at £16,445, and we test drove the Premium 1.6 T-GDi 4WD 7 speed DCT version (OTR £25,245) - which comes with full LED headlights, for safer driving on country lanes; and an on-demand 4WD system which makes driving on slippery surfaces and bumpy country roads safer and much more fun.

The Premium GT model also came with a larger screen, Head Up Display (HUD) and extra safety features like autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian recognition. For that feeling of being pampered, the heated steering wheel is great in winter !

The bigger engine and 4WD do bring the mpg figures down to the low 40s - so if economy is your deciding factor, go for the 3 cylinder 1.0 petrol engine which gives 50+mpg.

Other cutting edge features include wireless phone charging and Head Up Display - so you don’t have to take your eyes off the road for satnav instructions.

Look out for the All-New Kona Electric, Hyundai Motor - coming later this year !
