Ancient mariners on the Mediterranean Sea, accustomed to traveling in the dark, were mesmerized by the shining fire of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. Its light could be seen from hundreds of miles, and its 300-foot observation tower offered ancient people a rare chance to stand on top of the world.
