What are the main reasons for relocating to Switzerland, and particularly to Canton Ticino?
Switzerland and Canton Ticino are always highly attractive, for both business and personal reasons. The main business reasons include safety, Swiss reliability and political stability, an attractive tax regime, open relationships with institutions, efficient infrastructure, and proximity to Milan. Personal reasons include personal safety, excellent health, social and education systems, attractive personal taxation levels, a fascinating landscape, favorable climate conditions with a wide range of leisure activities, excellent services, and interesting cultural life. Given the above, it is honestly difficult to find another comparable place within Europe.
Is it easy for non-European citizens to obtain a Swiss visa in order to relocate to Switzerland?
This depends on each individual case. However, as a general rule, if they are relocating to Switzerland for professional reasons and are highly compensated, things are quite straightforward. Furthermore, Ultra High Net Worth Individuals (UHNIW) who do not intend to perform any professional activities within Switzerland may apply for Swiss “forfeit” or “lump-sum” personal taxation.

Can you explain what “forfeit” personal taxation means?
This is a very particular personal Swiss tax regime. It may be requested only by foreigners (i.e. non-Swiss passport holders) which are relocating to Switzerland for the first time. It is not possible to choose this tax regime after moving to Switzerland. This particular tax regime allows the taxpayer to pay personal taxes based on a specific “fixed”amount which is duly negotiated and agreed beforehand with the local tax authorities.

Is it easy to incorporate a new company in Switzerland?
The incorporation of a new company in Switzerland may be accomplished in as little as a few days. Furthermore, in principle, Swiss business law is quite straightforward and easy to understand, even for people that do not have a legal background.
What is the average corporate taxation rate?
The Swiss taxation system includes federal, cantonal, and municipal taxes. For 2024, in Canton Ticino, the sum of these three taxes adds up to approximately 19% on EBT (Earnings Before Taxes). In 2025 the average corporate tax rate in Canton Ticino will decrease to approximately 16% on EBT. This is a very attractive rate compared to most European countries.

Sabbadini opens its new Atelier in the heart of Milan
A symbol of refined taste since the early 1900s, Sabbadini is a point of reference for a cosmopolitan clientele. With its high jewelry creations, it redefines the standards of beauty and jewelry design founded on the essence of Italian craftsmanship. Sabbadini’s unique and unparalleled style is capable of evoking emotions and uniting different personalities. Today, Sabbadini remains faithful to its traditions and to the artisanal production still carried out by its master craftsmen in their workshop.
A purveyor of beauty, with unbridled creativity and excellent craftsmanship, Sabbadini opened the doors to its Atelier on Via Sant’Andrea 5, the same address housing the near-centennial luxury brand’s boutique, offices, and factory.
The opening kicks off a new chapter in the history of the Sabbadini maison, now managing all its operations from under one roof in the heart of Milan’s Golden Triangle luxury shopping and fashion district. Sabbadini is the only remaining storied jeweler to export its idea of beauty to the world from the center of the city.
Nestled in the courtyard of a beautiful palazzo of the high jeweler’s flagship store, the Atelier is a multipurpose space to display Sabbadini’s fine jewelry collections and custom pieces, as well as house its workshop and prototype factory where creations come to life.
Leaving the boutique behind, where the Sabbadini brand relocated in 2022 from its former flagship on Via Montenapoleone, a lush courtyard serves as a prelude to the Atelier spaces.
The first room on the ground floor marks a celebration of Sabbadini’s link with the Italian savoir-faire and cultural milieu, as the family-owned jeweler moved the original décor and setting of its former Via Montenapoleone boutique to the new space.

Originally conceived in 1994 by famed architect and three-time Oscar-nominated set designer Renzo Mongiardino, the architectural jewel has been dismantled and reassembled as it was, replete with its green wooden cabinets and velvet-decked displays, treasure chest-like round plan and dual-toned parquet flooring, including the signature bee-shaped insets that the architect embedded as a surprise homage to Sabbadini’s symbolic jewel.
The relocation of the artwork, now under the tutelage of the Superintendents of Cultural Heritage, was curated by the Milan-based Studio Peregalli, helmed by Roberto Peregalli and Laura Sartori Rimini, the former a pupil of Mongiardino.
Inside the Renzo-designed treasure chest, clients are invited to discover one of-a-kind jewels, and get a glimpse of the culturally-rich Sabbadini world.
Along the same lines, the adjacent courtyard is to be enhanced as a reception space for Sabbadini’s cosmopolitan clientele in sync with its tailor-made approach to retail and distinctively Italian flair for hospitality, carried on by Alberto and Stefania Sabbadini alongside their children Pierandrea and Micol.
The Atelier’s basement houses offices, while the upper floors are dedicated to the creative studio and prototype factory which work hand-in-hand to blend Sabbadini’s penchant for artisanal mastery and creativity.
The new Sabbadini boutique, officially opened in December 2022, was designed by architect Ezio Riva with an eclectic mix of materials and colors that establish a dialogue with Sabbadini’s past while evoking a contemporary, timeless, and luxurious vibe. The golden velvet window and cabinet displays, the same employed in the former boutique on Via Montenapoleone, nod to Renzo Mongiardino, while the metalwork paneling arranged in a hexagonal pattern references a beehive. The herringbone parquet flooring and molded ceilings are refined examples of Milanese architectural opulence.

Jennifer Hung-Zanarini (TPA President, 2019-present)

Our family has been a part of TASIS for the last thirteen years. Our boys Rocco ’23 and Romeo ’25 both started at Focolare and TASIS is their home.
I was active as a room parent in the early days and a few years later served as the TPA Middle School Coordinator.
I laugh now when I think of how I walked into a luncheon one spring
day at Marianne’s house with Muriel, Melany, Irache, Hanne, Laura and some other parents. Somehow I walked out of that lunch as the new TPA President. That was five years ago and where the fun began! It was the year of Covid and lockdowns, but it did not stop us. If we could not gather indoors, we would do it outdoors.
My favorite memory is the Teacher Appreciation Car Parade. Social distancing regulations were in full effect so we had to be inventive; we were determined not to cancel the traditional teacher appreciation event and to celebrate the resilience of our teachers during this unprecedented period.
We asked parents to dress up their cars, make signs and load their kids inside at a parking lot below the school.
That day about 50 colorful cars drove by the school with kids’ heads bursting out of windows and sunroofs and bodies almost falling out of convertibles. We cheered on our amazing teachers as we drove in a long procession, honking and screaming. The authorities arrived at some point but it became part of the fun—you just know it’s a success when the police arrive!
FROM THAT DAY ONWARD THE TPA’S GOALS WERE CLEAR TO ME: HAVE FUN, PROMOTE SCHOOL SPIRIT, SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER AND OUR KIDS, STAY UNITED AS A COMMUNITY, AND CELEBRATE, IN CONTINUATION, THE LUCK WE SHARE IN BEING PART OF THIS WONDERFUL, SORT OF UNKNOWN, SECRET VILLAGE.
The beautiful thing about TASIS is the warmth you feel from faculty, staff, and other parents. The school brings together families from all over the world, each with their unique mix of cultures, ideals, and perspectives. There is always someone with a smile, willing to help and be a friend. The TPA just accelerates these friendships and for me personally, I have formed extraordinary bonds that will last forever. They say that leaders are not born but made.

Well, I definitely grew into this role, standing on the shoulders of the TPA Presidents before me, Muriel and Laura. I continue to learn just as much from a younger generation of parents like Prune, my Gala Co-Chair who brings fresh eyes to all things TASIS, with her passion and determination. I still can’t speak Italian perfectly because one particular Italian friend still permits me to invent words that do not exist without correcting me.
I have a treasure trove of moments to laugh at whenever I feel down or upset. I remember losing Maria’s ear pods down a drain while we were hiding Easter “golden” eggs on campus in the middle of the night and the exact moment I realized I was not as smart as Ana because I could not solve her damn Easter egg hunt riddles. I laugh (but am now slightly appalled), when I think about Natalia, Sevim, Lada, Linda, Mel, Manu, Angelika decorating the campus in the middle of a

freezing snowstorm in preparation for Christmas. The result was beautiful, but what on earth were we doing! I remember Lada vacuuming the Palmer Center as we decorated for Santa’s Village and Natalia watering all the plants every morning in front of the Headmaster’s office for Fall Festival so that the flowers would stay alive. Do you know that the TPA Decorating team has brooms, watering pails, and supplies hidden all around campus? We have done so much, shared so much and laughed so much together.
I am so proud to see that the TPA has grown immensely these past years. Parents have been so involved, sharing their passions by creating groups such as the TPA Book Club, TPA Art & Culture, TPA STEAM, TPA Miracle Mornings and TPA Hiking. The TPA Alumni group was born from the parents whose children have already graduated, but did not want that to stop them from missing out on all the fun. And our PSC group is stronger than ever with Ana, Silvia, and Sevim at the helm as Muriel starts to pass that torch.
I will wrap up my last year as TPA President when Romeo graduates next year, but already know I will be an active member of our TPA Alumni Group. I love that TPA Alumni come back to volunteer at school events, like the Used Uniform sale. It is just extraordinary and continues that precious, beautiful circle that is TASIS.
I NOW BRING YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS HUGE, GORGEOUS, MASSIVE GALAZINE.
DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED. OPEN IT. THE DENSITY OF IT IS SIMPLY THE REFLECTION OF WHAT HAPPENS WHEN OUR TALENTED COMMUNITY WORKS TOGETHER. THE BRILLIANCE, CREATIVITY AND DETERMINATION BROUGHT FROM EVERY SINGLE PERSON INVOLVED HAS ONLY PROPELLED US TO KEEP ADDING PAGE AFTER PAGE. WE COULD HAVE GONE ON AND ON, FOREVER CELEBRATING TASIS, THE TPA, OUR COMMUNITY, OUR CHILDREN … AT SOME POINT WE HAD TO STOP SO THAT YOU COULD ACTUALLY VIEW THIS THING.
SO I INVITE YOU NOW TO READ ONWARD, REDISCOVER TASIS…INDULGE YOURSELF, REWARD YOURSELF, HAVE FUN, AND SPEND A LOT!
IT IS FOR A GREAT CAUSE INDEED: THE LEGACY OF OUR CHILDREN, A REFLECTION OF YOU, AS A WONDERFUL PARENT TO THESE WONDERFUL KIDS!

Muriel Aciman HassanMother of Josh Hassan ’20 and Chloé Hassan ’25 . She spent 17 years working with the TPA and was President from 2014-2015.
TASIS has been the best gift Ticino life has given our family. When the elementary school opened with Pre-K, Josh was 4 and we jumped into the opportunity of being in an international community.
It's safe to say that the School grew with our two children and five years later, by the time Chloé enrolled at TASIS, it had become a complete establishment.
I was recruited in the middle of the crossing road in front of Hadsall by another parent to join the TPA. Little did I know I would be so active in the 18 years to come.

I loved being involved in the path to excellence of this wonderful school filled with good values and great vision, working side by side with different administrators and parents and seeing our children blossom; so different from one another, yet all finding their passions within their beloved school.
MY INVOLVEMENT WITHIN THE TPA TAUGHT ME IMMENSELY AND MADE ME MORE RESILIENT. I HAVE EXPERIENCED INCREDIBLE COMMUNITY SUPPORT BY WONDERFUL PARENTS WHO HAVE BECOME TRUSTED LIFELONG FRIENDS. THANK YOU TASIS FOR THIS WONDERFUL RIDE TOGETHER.
She served as TPA President from 2016-2019 and TPA Treasurer from 2019-2024. She was a ES Room Parent from 2014-16 and is the parent of a 10th grader.
the service of all three divisions, but I could immediately count on the many amazing parents and TASIS staff ready to help and implement the TPA event calendar.
OPENNESS, EMPATHY, TOGETHER WITH TIRELESS TEAMWORK DEFINE THE FOUNDATION OF OUR COMMUNITY THAT MAKES TASIS NOT JUST A SCHOOL BUT
When I accepted the role of TPA President my daughter was in third grade and I was afraid of a role in
I remember my English was not so good and everyone knew very soon they should write to me, not call me on my phone if they want to be sure I received the correct message. It was my way of learning an important lesson: language is never an insurmountable obstacle and when my intentions were good and I was ready to show my vulnerability, my community took care of me.

A WELCOMING FAMILY TO BE PROUD OF.
I RECEIVED MORE THAN I GAVE, AND THAT’S BECAUSE OF WHO WAS THERE BEFORE AND AFTER ME, VOLUNTEERING EVERY DAY WITH BIG SMILES ON THEIR FACES AND STRONG DETERMINATION.
EVERY DAY I STILL LEARN AND ENRICH
THE MEANING OF MY LIFE FROM THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN CLOSE TO ME FOR MANY YEARS AT TASIS AND FROM THOSE WHO ARE NEW FRIENDS.
ANNIE
Yesterday, I walked through the TASIS gates for the first time, except that yesterday was 11 years ago. I remember every second spent on this campus as a sweet memory; this beautiful campus that has grown so familiar to me, and of which I could even tell you the number of steps on each staircase from all the times I walked on them.
This campus that is as familiar to me as my own house, and that I like to call my home away from home; a home which is enriched by a loving, caring and nurturing family composed of students, faculty, and staff. This is why leaving TASIS is as hard for me as it is to leave my family. When I was younger all I looked forward to was this moment: graduating. Now, I wish I could stay here forever. I am who I am also thanks to this school, not solely because of everything I was taught within the classroom, but especially because of the values that it has transmitted to me beyond the classroom. TASIS has taught me to be inquisitive, open to novelty, ambitious, curious, and especially, welcoming of “the different”.
TASIS has gifted me the most special friendships, which I will carry with me for the rest of my life. TASIS has connected me to some of the most talented teachers and faculty members there are, who also happen to be some of the wisest and whole-hearted people I know. I will be eternally grateful to this place; this place, that is so much more than a simple school. I will be eternally grateful to my parents, who have made the decision to have me study here, but especially, to have me be raised here.

BEZIKIAN
I WILL CARRY EVERY PERSON, EVERY LAUGH, EVERY CONVERSATION, EVERY MOMENT OF PRIDE AND OF DIFFICULTY, OF CONFUSION AND OF CLARITY, OF INQUISITION AND DISCOVERY, WITH ME DAY BY DAY UP UNTIL AND BEYOND MY LAST DAY. I WILL EXPERIENCE SMELLS, LANDSCAPES, TASTES, AND FEELINGS THAT WILL REMIND ME OF TASIS, AND NO MATTER WHERE I’LL BE IN THE WORLD OR WHAT I’LL BE DOING, I’LL SMILE AT ALL THE MEMORIES AND I HOPE THAT ONE DAY MY CHILDREN WILL BE ABLE TO SAY THE SAME, BECAUSE ALTHOUGH I WILL LEAVE TASIS, TASIS WILL NEVER LEAVE ME.
Annie Bezikian ’24COMMUNITY TRIBUTE
ALUMNI PARENTS, ALUMNI FRIENDS

Ana Cristina de Attayde ’99 is the mother of Nina Mondin ’23 and Giulia Mondin ’25. There’s something extraordinarily special about TASIS. The friendly bonds created here last a lifetime and
the loving memories remain fresh in all our minds. It is such a pleasure to return more than 20 years later and see that the TASIS spirit remains strong, and that Ms. Fleming’s legacy continues to touch so many young people around the world.
I feel exceedingly lucky to have been a TASIS student! To be able to return and offer my daughters the opportunity to have the same quality education gives me a tremendous sense of accomplishment. It is beautiful to see the expansion of such a unique campus and yet still feel the tradition of the main buildings such as De Nobili. This blend of old and new remains one of the School’s most enchanting qualities. The architectural concepts proposed time and time again throughout TASIS’s growth not only respect, but also celebrate the local beauty of the Collina d’Oro. Reading a book outside or chatting with friends with the backdrop of Ticino’s majestic mountains is a true feast for the eyes.
Mrs. Fleming’s campus vision, carried on by the expansions led by her daughter Lynn Aeschliman, not only feed the spirit with beauty and balance, but also give students a profound sense of belonging. I am confident TASIS will continue to expand gracefully, and I hope that the children
of my children can also attend TASIS and learn in this scenic, enchanting environment.
Wilma Facchinetti ’99 is the mother of Leon Facchinetti ’32 and Lavinia Facchinetti ’33

When they say “TASIS family” they are not just speaking metaphorically. We really do become a family in every sense of the word. It’s a phenomenon, a mutual feeling that is shared by everyone who has experienced life at TASIS.
Creating this sense of long-lasting unity is not an easy feat. But somehow,
our TASIS group holds a privileged position in the hierarchy of our friendships. It’s as if we wear an invisible badge that grants us an unshakable bond and unwavering loyalty towards each other.
TASIS has a remarkable quality, one that today, as a mother of little TASIS students, I am very grateful for: the feeling of being fiercely protected and genuinely loved.
I will be forever grateful to one particular person who made a
major impact in my life when I was struggling with being away from home: Kay Hamblin, my English teacher. When she noticed that my grades were plummeting, instead of being disappointed and leaving me to handle the consequences, she pulled me aside and said that I was her best student despite being the only non-native English speaker in the class. I don’t know whether it was true or not, but it gave me precisely the fuel I needed to find my drive and excel again: the desire for her approval. It felt like a much
needed hug, and sometimes all a student needs in order to redirect is a hug. I see the same care and minute attention being shown to my children more than 20 years later, and that can only mean one thing: that TASIS genuinely cares about more than grades on a paper.
And perhaps that is the School’s secret ingredient; perhaps that is what makes us feel like a big family—the feeling of being seen, protected, and individually appreciated despite our many flaws. Because that’s what ‘family’ means.

COMMUNITY TRIBUTE
Sara Rosso Cipolini, Filippo Cipolini '19, and Michele Cipolini '21

Our family and TASIS first crossed paths in 2006. Filippo and Michele enrolled in the first cohort of the nascent Elementary School and went on to complete their studies at TASIS, being among the first TASIS ‘lifers’. I joined the Board of Directors at TASIS Switzerland in 2012 and have served on the board since.
There is no single instance that appropriately captures the magnitude
of the TASIS mission and the influence it continues to have on our family. The emotional bond that ties us to this magic campus and every other member of the community transcends the idea of TASIS as ‘just’ a school. TASIS is, for us as for many others, a home. It is a sense of belonging that you feel from the first moment you are welcomed to campus and immersed in its beauty. But TASIS also has a more profound effect. From the first moment you become part of the community, you are encouraged to dream. The unshakeable belief in one’s potential permeates the community and gives students, from the first day, the confidence and strength to start building the life of their dreams. Students are challenged to pursue their passions with the reassurance that there will always be someone that cares in their corner to support them.
It is the strength of heart of each member of the community that powers the TASIS dream. Intrinsic to this dream is the challenge to go into the world and pursue a life of service, to preserve and contribute to the beauty of this world. TASIS empowers you to believe that not only is it within your power to exert a positive influence on the world, but it is also your duty to do so.
During International Week, it is tradition that one student from each grade is chosen to be torch bearer
for the class. In this ritual of passing the torch between grades is the belief that only together will the students and the community be able to keep the TASIS light shining. And it is the youngest student, the one that still has the most to take from—and give to— the TASIS community, who lights the fire. It is a special moment where the community comes together to celebrate its accomplishments and renew its commitment to the TASIS mission.
From the first day, we knew we had found a place that would take our heart and change the trajectory of our lives. We are fortunate to have found belonging in the TASIS community.
Sara Rosso Cipolini was educated in Italy and Switzerland. After graduating from high school, she attended classes in Accounting, Financial Management, Hospitality Sales, and Marketing at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Between 1989 and 1997 she worked for Pantravel SA (a forerunner of Planhotel SA) and traveled widely, organizing and accompanying incentive groups all over the world. Since 2008, Sara has been the President of Planhotel SA, a company for which she served as Managing Director from 1997-2007 and that specializes in resort ownership, management, supervising, planning, and project development. This group now comprises 14 resorts, hotels, and spas in Kenya, Zanzibar, the Maldives, and The View in Lugano. She and her husband live in Lugano.

The TPA represents a heartfelt commitment to the educational journey not just for our children, but for us as a community. It signifies unity, where diverse backgrounds and experiences converge for a common goal: to enrich and support the vibrant learning environment our children thrive in.
Being part of this association is a testament to the belief that education is a collaborative endeavor where parents, faculty, and students come together to create a nurturing and inspiring atmosphere. It’s about being

I am proud of the bond we have forged between Villa Principe Leopoldo and TASIS with its vibrant international community.
During the nine years I have been involved at the Villa, not only have we collaborated on events and both formal meetings and informal encounters, but we have enjoyed special unique moments together that have left some wonderful memories.

Your dedication to shaping your children’s future has created an exceptional atmosphere, turning our hotel into a real home for the TASIS community and not just somewhere to stay.
I am honored to make my contribution to this legacy and would like to thank you for having made me feel a true part of your extraordinary family.
IONA LOVE
DEAR TASIS,
BEING A PART OF THE RAPIDLY GROWING COMMUNITY I CALL HOME HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING, EDUCATIONAL, AND FOUNDATION-BUILDING EXPERIENCES I WILL EVER BE PART OF. TASIS HAS MEANT
A big one is the small but growing community of the children of the faculty here at TASIS. Some children, whose fathers and mothers are my parents’ colleagues, I grew up with, and some newer arrivals—from babies to seniors—I am just getting to know. Some of my memories are so attached to this gorgeous campus that sometimes I get overwhelming flashbacks while walking to English taking my first steps or cuddling my baby brother. Another aspect I love about TASIS is the wide variety of courses, classes, and programs that will give us a head start and a solid foundation for life, no matter the paths we eventually choose.
TASIS has allowed me to open my heart and mind to experiences and knowledge I might have never known. I have pursued what I love, dipping my toes into different activities, such as theater, dance, violin, and many more. Middle School is a time to test and reflect, or maybe test and love.
MUCH TO ME THROUGHOUT MY LIFE.
TASIS has given me these opportunities to learn and grow, which I will not take for granted. I also love the intensity and variety of cultural encounters all over Campus.
I have learned much about the stories, customs, languages, cultures, and art of my classmates through activities such as International Week, Academic Travel, and, importantly, through friendly conversation. What impresses me most is TASIS's effort to foster a peaceful and welcoming environment among students.
The students treat each other with respect and dignity no matter the situation or disagreement of their countries. All in all, I am very proud, grateful and happy to be part of this beautiful TASIS community. I could not be more excited to spend my next seven years learning, building solid foundations, and creating friendships with people from all over the world.
Iona Love ’30
I am inspired by the spirit and soul of our TASIS community every day.
A word that is used a lot at TASIS is “family”. And like family members, we squabble, we argue, and we may see things differently. But also, like in a family, our goals are the same: to play our part in providing a safe, secure, inspiring learning environment where everyone can be happy and thrive.
This means valuing and embracing the uniqueness of each individual— flaws, strengths, weaknesses, talents.
This also means feeling motivated, encouraged, and supported as we work together towards these goals. There is power in our perspectives. Everyone in our community brings something distinct to it. How we each perceive the world, coupled with Mrs. Fleming’s vision of what our ideal world could be— peaceful, harmonious, where we all have the opportunity to reach our full potential—results in a unique community, a unique family, that has a meaningful impact on each of us forever.
At TASIS, we create global citizens. Our community provides infinite opportunities for cross-cultural interactions. Every day, we learn about tolerance, compassion, and openness to others. We discuss, laugh, and collaborate. We agree, we disagree, but in the end there is a deep connection that binds us together. We learn from each other.
As Head of Middle School Student Affairs, I look after the well-being of a young community within our greater

MORE THAN 2 LETTERS:

TASIS community. This age group is special; they are on the precipice between child and teenager and their life is a roller coaster as they search for their identities and understand who they might want to become. Over thirty years ago, Mrs. Fleming taught me the concept of “tough love”: implementing structure, but allowing students freedom to be educated and flourish within set boundaries.
If students feel loved, safe, and secure, and if they know we let them make mistakes and give them opportunities for change and growth, they will thrive.
Thanks to the mutual respect teachers and students have for each other and our common commitment to the mission of TASIS, we support each other with integrity, presence, and kindness. We trust each other and make our community better.
We are modeling how to live in the world as different people with diverse interests but common expectations and goals.
Mrs. Fleming used to quote: “Good timber does not grow with ease, the stronger wind, the stronger trees!” The tree is a simple but resonant metaphor for our TASIS community. Trees are steady, dependable. Rooted in a strong foundation, they have weathered many storms and become stronger trees. They are growing, changing, and adapting. Whether in full blossom, covered in autumnal foliage, or even bare in the depths of winter, they are resplendent.
And if we cut a tree open, its rings tell a story of each year just as every year adds to the TASIS story: the scary, the uncomfortable, the challenging, the exciting, and the glorious.
Each year, every member of our community leaves his or her mark, becoming part of that year’s ring, responding to the winds to become ever stronger and increasingly prepared to make this world a better place. How fortunate we are to know this tree, to rest in its shade and watch it bloom.

They say that moving is the third cause of psychological stress among traumatic life events for a person, so when I moved with my family from Italy to Switzerland two years ago, I was deeply affected by it. I had heard that Switzerland was a wonderful country, safe and picturesque, but Swiss people could be suspicious of newcomers, so at that time I didn't know what to expect in this new country with its distinct way of life.
However, when my family and I took part in the Student and Family Orientation day at TASIS, I was surprised by everyone being so kind and helpful: the other parents, teachers, and staff welcomed me with open arms, embracing me like a member of their extended family.
They provided me with not only useful information regarding the school, but also tips and advice that have made my life in Switzerland much smoother than I had expected. The warmth and camaraderie among our school community quickly dissolved my fears and uncertainties. Before long, I found myself immersed in the rhythm of TASIS life in Switzerland, discovering the beauty of its landscapes,

the precision of its timekeeping, and the richness of its traditions.
One pivotal element in this transition was the TPA, which proved to be invaluable: they organized welcome coffees and vibrant luncheons that I eagerly joined, providing opportunities to meet other friendly parents and become an active part of the school community. Later in October, the TPA Miracle Morning classes started, and I discovered many interesting activities to choose from: in the end I joined the Chinese course and the Gospel choir, courses where I met special people. Participating in these events not only helped me integrate into the community but also provided a sense of purpose and connection. What initially seemed like a daunting move turned into an enriching experience, filled with new friendships, opportunities for growth, and a deep appreciation for the welcoming spirit of the American people in this unique international setting.
This year I was also lucky enough to personally contribute to organizing the Miracle Morning courses and the TPA Art & Culture group. Lately, as an enthusiastic supporter of the TASIS Global Village Building Campaign, my family’s contribution as one of the Gala’s main sponsors has further deepened our bond with the school and its wonderful community in a place I am proud to call home.

The legacy of TASIS for our family is the perspective it has fostered in our kids. TASIS challenges its students to a demanding academic program while
The TASIS Parents Association (TPA), with the purpose to support all our children and represent the interests of all parents, is unique in many ways. The really interesting thing is that I have met many valuable people at TASIS, from different nations and cultures.
I have had the privilege of exchanging ideas, learning, and understanding a lot about the ethics, values, and customs of my neighbors. Although we all have different backgrounds, in the end, we all have the same needs: we need each other.
Organizing events for our children and meeting other parents during the setup, organization, and celebration often lead to friendships. These friendships allow us to help each other and show the children that country of origin, religion, and race are not the basis for a decision leading to a

relationship or friendship.
We are there for each other. Having our families abroad, our TPA/TASIS community is our new family. It is there for us when we need help, advice, or just someone to pick up our children because we are stuck in traffic.
It is the 10th year that I have been responsible for the used uniform sale, and whenever I need help, it only takes a few phone calls for TASIS/ TPA moms to come and help. We are a great team, and we rely on each other. Everyone helps one another, whether it is a weekend or a rainy day.
A heartfelt thank you for the constant and tireless commitment of all women who actively work hard, not only for the well-being of all TASIS children but also to improve the association and to become better themselves.

Galazine Editor-in-Chief and TPA member Prune Goujon Clerici is launching a new initiative to inspire partnerships in our community, We Care. The goal of We Care is to connect family foundations with causes worthy of support, including organizations that are important to our community, such as Movember, and those connected to TASIS service learning and the Global Service Program.
We Care and TASIS would like to share the story of a TASIS family that is changing lives through their dedication and initiative.
“The TASIS community was instrumental to the EI Cure Project from the very beginning.”
The EI Cure Project was founded as a Swiss Association by Helen Lill, ES TPA Coordinator, and Tom Lill, TASIS Director of Residential Life and PE Chair, in 2023 to fund research into finding a cure for their daughter’s 1 in 300,000 rare blistering skin disease, Epidermolytic Ichthyosis (EI). The EI Cure Project is now a global organization with not-for-profit status in Switzerland, the UK, the US, and Canada, which joins patient advocates with world-class gene-editing researchers and scientists working together to find a cure for EI.
Helen says that while her healthcare and research background helped her to make the right connections in the field of gene-editing, it is thanks to the kind support that she received from the TASIS community that made the EI Cure Project become a reality. “Right at the beginning, when I was struggling to come to terms with not being able to find anyone medical who could help our daughter, Prune Clerici gave me a gentle nudge in the right direction. This was back in 2019, and at the time there were almost no academic publications on EI, and even
really experienced dermatologists didn’t know what to do. I’d retreated from social media because I found everyone’s happy family pictures too jarring, but Prune was the one who suggested I try to track down other people affected with EI to see how they managed their skin. I realized I had nothing to lose, and took her advice. One thing led to another and my early connections flourished into a global online support group, and eventually my existing medical knowledge allowed me to connect with the researchers and scientists who are now part of the Research Alliance for the EI Cure Project”.

The TASIS community jumped to their aid again when they started fundraising for a cure for EI. “Initially we started with a GoFundMe online fundraiser, but soon we realized it was necessary for us to pursue charitable status and take control of patient advocacy and fundraising for research for EI”. Helen asked the TASIS community for advice again, and within minutes of posting a question about finding a lawyer to help with the legal process of founding a charity, Helen found herself in possession of a contact for a super lawyer who offered to do the work pro bono, and they received a donation for CHF 10,000 from another kind family. “I was truly blown away by the generosity and the depth of support that was extended to us. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that day, it was incredibly humbling”.
WE CARE CONNECTING OUR
At the very beginning Helen and Tom really questioned whether it was the right thing to reveal their daughter’s condition. “I will always remember the night before we shared our plans to fundraise for EI with the TASIS community. I’d done all this work to connect with researchers and was in the process of trying to gauge from the EI community how they felt about fundraising. The problem with fundraising of course, is that you have to ask people for money, which feels so terribly awkward, but you must also explain WHY you’re asking in the first place. In order to fundraise, we would have to reveal our daughter’s differences to the world and to talk openly about our daily struggles, and we were concerned that this would have negative consequences for her. We were scared she would be bullied and that the party invitations would no longer include her. We were nervous that suddenly people would stop talking to us, and that we would be on the receiving end of scrutinous stares, finger-pointing, and harsh questions.”
Despite their reservations, Helen and Tom decided that the opportunity to work with the researchers was likely to be a once in a lifetime offer, and so they had to take a chance and try their best to share the information about their daughter’s condition in a manner that was both respectful of her needs, and as gracious and humble as possible.
“The response and support we received from the TASIS community when we decided to share our story was simply phenomenal and deeply moving. We received many donations from families, but we also received many incredible messages and emails of support from so many kind parents. The only way I can describe it is that we experienced an outpouring of love and kindness from the TASIS community; it was truly a wave of positivity, and we will forever be thankful.”
Inspired by Helen, Tom, and their family, TASIS now marks International Rare Disease Day to raise awareness for EI and other rare diseases. It’s a difficult topic, so Helen started with a small group of Focolare students in 2023. “Thankfully we got it right, and the students asked some incredibly insightful questions, so in 2024 we were permitted to extend our program to the whole of the ES.” Events included a fun dance awareness activity into the program which our TASIS faculty and friends helped produce.
“Thanks to the support of the school and the TASIS community, Rare Disease Day has now become something that everyone is talking about, and the students really seem to have received our lesson of kindness, respect, and inclusion when faced with someone who looks different because of a health challenge. The School has embraced Rare Disease Day and the EI Cure Project, and next year we have been invited to talk to the whole school about Rare Disease Awareness, and the EI Cure Project will be part of the TASIS Global Service Program”.
Perhaps the most moving result of this process is how it has affected Helen and Tom’s daughter. “Because our community has been so incredibly supportive and positive about what we’re doing, our daughter has grown in confidence. It is almost as though she understands that all the excitement and positivity is about her, and that this is all because of her special skin. So now she tells everyone about her skin with a confidence that I could never have thought was possible”.
Helen continues, “As a room parent and TPA Coordinator, I have always tried to embody the values that I think are so important to TASIS, and that is to help everyone to find their place and be happy. As TPA representatives, we do our best to welcome new families, no matter what their circumstances, and we try to help the children and the parents equally because happy parents make happy kids, and happy kids allow our school and our community to flourish. I never dreamed that this same kindness would be extended to me and my family with something as unusual and difficult as a rare skin disease. The journey we have been on so far has been so incredibly validating, and I continue to be amazed by the depths of the kindness and strength of our TASIS community, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds.”
Helen and Tom would like to extend their deepest gratitude to everyone who has helped to support them and the EI Cure Project so far, and would like to invite you to contact them with any questions at eicureproject@gmail.com and to visit the the EI Cure Project website for more information, pictures, and testimonials about life with EI: www.eicureproject.com.

MOVEMBER

Every November the TASIS campus seems a little…well, hairier. Welcome to Movember, a decade-long TASIS tradition where faculty and staff grow mustaches to raise money and awareness for some of the biggest health issues faced by men, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health, and physical inactivity.
The Movember movement traces its roots back to 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, when a group of friends decided to grow mustaches for the month of November to raise money for charity. Over the years, Movember has grown into a global phenomenon, with millions of participants worldwide, each sporting mustaches during November and raising funds for men's health causes.
Former Math teacher and Global Service Program Director Danny Schiff started the initiative at TASIS in 2011 and 2012. By 2013 a handful of colleagues joined in after Danny proposed to create a parody rap video for the 2013 Movember Moscar competition (the Oscars of Movember). With help from professional videographer Milo Zanecchia ’08, the TASIS “Mo Bros” created a video that was featured on the

international Movember website and nominated for a Moscar—and helped the Mo Bros raise CHF 2000.
Since then, the Mo Bros have produced 13 music videos and raised more than CHF 20,000 for the Movember Foundation, a global charity committed to men living happier, healthier, and longer lives.
The videos, set to popular tracks with lyrics rewritten to suit Movember and TASIS, include a number of TASIS faculty and staff.
The 2023 10th anniversary video was particularly poignant for the TASIS community. Set to The Beatles’ “Hey Jude,” the video features a faculty brass band, Mo Bros alumni, and a student choir
and is dedicated to Joe Dusing, who died on August 8, 2023, from choriocarcinoma. Joe, who was AV and Multimedia Coordinator at TASIS, is survived by his wife Angela, who teaches Middle School Music.
Joe’s memory will live on as the TASIS Movember magic continues for many years to come.
OPSAHL GLOBAL SERVICE PROGRAM (GSP) IN HIGH SCHOOL
Envisioned by Jan Opsahl ’68, who became the first international student at TASIS when he came from Norway in 1965, the pioneering GSP was launched in 2013 with major support from a most generous donation from Mr. Opsahl and his family to set up the Global Service Trust. The program changes lives by providing every High School student with a unique opportunity to connect across borders—whether geographic, economic, or social—through comprehensive experiences that build empathy and encourage personal responsibility. Its ultimate aim is to awaken students to humanitarian needs; inspire them to build enduring, mutually beneficial relationships; and lead them toward a life of active citizenship and committed service.
One of the most poignant and resonant connections our community shares is a commitment to serving others. The volunteer TASIS Parent Association creates thoughtful events to bring our community together. Many TASIS faculty members lead group gatherings, weekend trips, special events, and study sessions to support students and find common ground. And most importantly, throughout their TASIS journey, students are taught to value serving others through a robust Service Learning Program that spans all three divisions and culminates with the
In October, TASIS hosted a special celebration in the Villa De Nobili Salon to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the GSP and honor the man who made it all possible, Jan Opsahl. (Jan continues to support the program to this day.) The evening included heartfelt speeches by a dozen students who have been on GSP trips and a powerful video that recapped the past 10 years of the program, with commentary from Zach Mulert, the original director of the program; Danny Schiff, who took over as director in 2018; Patty Clardy, who has led the program since 2022; and Camilla Redmond Costa ’18, who made two trips to Zambia while she was at TASIS and has chosen to pursue a career in human rights law based largely on these experiences. Even though the celebration lasted more than two hours on a school night, the students in attendance were in no hurry to leave as it was winding down. Instead they crowded around Mr. Opsahl for one last chance to personally thank the man who’s made such a difference in their own lives and whose impact on the thousands of people around the globe whose lives have been enriched by the Opsahl Global Service Program can never be truly quantified.
There is no greater happiness than being of service to others.
— Mrs. Fleming, 1995

Gabriella Piconi ’16 wrote a moving essay for TASIS after her second GSP trip to the Nuovo Fiore Auxilium School in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She discussed how the TASIS group was greeted with a welcome ceremony, taught classes to young children, and quickly became a part of the Nuove Fiore community.
But the trip was brief, and Gabriella noticed that something was a bit off when she and her fellow students said goodbye after what had been an emotional week.
“I was surprised, perhaps wrongly, about how easy it was for [a 3rd-grade student named Binyum] to say goodbye, and disturbed at how lightly he took, or was accustomed to take, to being abandoned,” she said.
“A line of TS Eliot’s came to mind then: And should I have the right to smile?... Having to say goodbye was the hardest part, and even though I knew that 1) I had to do it, and 2) what it would be like, the inevitable reality of us leaving them didn't make sense. I felt a little like the Tin Man, then, because all I could think was, I know I have a heart because I can feel it breaking.”
In essence, it’s not about providing students with a change of scenery for a week or two. It’s about changing their mindsets for a lifetime.

hen I arrived in Lugano nine years ago it was challenging.
This was for many reasons: I was used to living in big cities, I'd just become the mother of twin girls and almost immediately of a baby boy, and I was always alone. But the combination wasn't working. And while Lugano has many good qualities, for a new mother it can be hard to adapt and I often felt lonely.
Finally at the age of 3, my twins could join school, and the additional great surprise was that TASIS had just decided to open the Pre-K class for the first time. They were in a very small class of eight children. We were all new parents and had the most wonderful teacher, Mrs. Carol, who was like the grandmother I never had. Leaving your children for the first time for a life outside the cocoon is quite a change. But it was a great change. Our daughters were immediately happy, and we parents were even more.
Our class families bonded so tightly, organizing playdates and events. Even now, six years later we still share a special bond.

Adapting to TASIS as a parent didn’t take more than the welcome assembly…the TPA immediately reached out, and connected me to others with the same necessities, and suddenly a city that was so hard became accessible
I first started being a room parent. A lousy one… with three kids the same age I could barely read an email, let alone share it with others. But it was ok.
TPA has this way of including you even if you have just a little time at disposal. We all have lives and priorities. So one day it could be bringing your favorite cake to a children’s event, and then slowly when you feel like it, we find you different tasks.
Everyone who is part of the TPA finds their voice. It's like a small company with a financial department, creative department, event planning,
GOOD ENERGY BRINGS MORE GOOD ENERGY
managers, curriculum, fundraising. We use our talents and we all contribute.
We are a big team of people and each of us can teach each other, inspire each other. We come from different work realities and can use our talents to contribute to our community. We have so many experiences to share, and this melting pot is a winning formula.
This community is how I came back to life. Truly.
After many years of just being a wife and a mother, I had lost every ounce of confidence I had for accomplishing anything. And as the TPA is a volunteer organization, it takes off any pressure .
I have to give a lot of credit to our TPA president, Jennifer Hung Zanarini. Apart from being amazing (for her nothing is impossible), her craziness is contagious and she has this magic power of finding everyone's potential. They are very few people that are deeply inspiring, and Jennifer is one of them.
The second way the TPA has brought magic into my life is because I have found wonderful friends. Working alongside so many different people, working towards common goals, brings us together. At most schools you get to know the parents in your child's class, but at TASIS, your friends might have kids fifteen years older than your own and you still find common ground.
Many of us are in the same situation. Away from home, mothers with our minds going at full speed, with many preoccupations (the famous "mental charge"). We all are navigating life events, trying to keep up and remain
even a small bit the women we were before, or trying to become the person we once wanted to be. Knowing you share this same story helps.
It may sound silly to give so much power to the TPA. But I know now that I'm not the only one who feels like this. Becoming a mother is not easy. Don't get me wrong, it's fantastic. But it also monopolizes your brain almost entirely. Following your husband might be the reasonable thing to do, but that doesn't mean it's easy. And one day you realize you are very far from being the woman you wanted to be, and you don't know where to begin.

English, Italian, kickboxing, and singing in a gospel choir in church.
EVERYONE WHO IS PART OF THE TPA FINDS THEIR VOICE
Two years ago I created the TPA Miracle Mornings events. The reason was simple: I was jealous of all the fun our kids were having at school. I was missing many activities in Lugano and decided that if they didn't exist, we should create these activities and have the best time while our kids were at school.
And... we got carried away! It has become massive. Our Miracle Morning events include fifteen classes including Chinese,
We've added workshops and life coaching, cooking classes, self defense and first aid classes, and other events that empower women. We learn, we laugh, we even cry.
Whatever is interesting, we bring it in.
And because the men started complaining...we started events for them, too! We do workshops for them too, mixing networking and a TED talk with amazing speakers.
And this is just the beginning. It is so much work, but brings so much satisfaction. And things have come full-circle: I have met new moms, arriving in Switzerland

just weeks before starting school, already having friends, planning their future vacations together, and thanking us with tears in their eyes, because they feel at home. I am so grateful for that.
I know the TPA should be more about the kids, but in my head it is not. Let's be honest, they already have the best school in the world, the best campus, teachers, and ecosystem.
Our kids aren't just happy, they are ecstatic! But what can change our family lives is a happy mom, an accomplished mother, a fulfilled wife.
Good energy brings more good energy.
To those who are skeptical, I encourage you to sneak a peek at the first meetings we have when school starts, and the stories you will hear are just amazing.
This community truly has it all. We are a very large group of international people of over 60 nationalities with interesting stories, interesting businesses, and interesting cultures. If we have a doubt of any kind, personal, parenthood-related, business-wise, we just need to ask around and for sure someone in our community can help. The networking potential is incredible.
Prune Clerici TPA Vice President, Mother of Leonore, Clelia & EmilioLET'S NEVER UNDERVALUE THE POWER OF BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER.

LEGACY WHAT DOES LEGACY MEAN TO YOU?
As we contemplate the significance of this Spring Gala and our collective role as a community, the TPA reflects on what binds us together and guides us along a shared path of purpose.
THE ANSWER LIES IN A SINGLE WORD: LEGACY.
Legacy is the timeless imprint of our values, achievements, and deeds—a beacon that illuminates our journey and paves the way for generations to come.
The realization of the Global Village Building Campaign is a testament to the TASIS Legacy—our children’s legacy, and our legacy. It is a grand vision, a dream we aspire to fulfill.
Through this Spring Gala, we unite as a community and invite you to dream boldly alongside us.

"I CARRY A DREAM"
MRS. MARY
CRIST FLEMING’S
DREAM – AN EDUCATIONAL VISION AND COMMITMENT THAT BECAME AN INSTITUTION AND A LEGACY.
The legacy conveyed to me, Lynn Fleming Aeschliman, as her daughter and successor , and to my colleagues at TASIS is a duty to remember the noble past achievements and to extend TASIS vigorously into the future.
As my mother, Mrs. Fleming, neared the end of her life, she looked back and down over the ninety years of her life and then wrote, “If I stand on my mountain
top and look up— outward and up—at the next 90 years, what do I see? This is what I hope to see: TASIS bursting at the seams with very special young people from all over the world, preparing themselves for leadership roles in their own countries, where they will strive to eliminate poverty, hunger, disease, exploitation, injustice, and war!”
This remains her dream, as bequeathed to me as the last member and generation of educators in the Crist-FlemingAeschliman family, and conveyed to our administrators, faculty, and students. I hope we can perpetuate her generous vision into the future and continue to make it fruitful in a world sorely in need of such virtue. Lynn Fleming Aeschliman
LETTER TO

ON LEGACY
BY CHRISTOPHER NIKOLOFFIn thinking about the next phase of the Global Village, I cannot help reflecting upon the fact that TASIS sits at the intersection of local and global, family and humanity. This is Mrs. Fleming’s legacy, to create schools in a beautiful location that bring young people together from around the world to learn and grow together and to increase their understanding of each other. TASIS is a local enterprise with a global impact. Though on one level we are part of an immediate family called TASIS, the legacy that is Mrs. Fleming’s vision extends to all of humanity.
The Global Village reflects this combination of local and global, family and humanity. The phrase itself contains a fruitful oxymoron: “Global” and “Village.” Nestled on a hill called Collina d’Oro, the campus
brings us all together into one small setting where we have to share spaces and exchange cordialities every day, just like a family. Yet the campus looks beyond ourselves towards vistas stretching across distant horizons, reminding us that we are here for not only each other but for all of humanity at the same time.
Architect Frank Lloyd Wright said, “A building is not just a place to be but a way to be.” The TASIS Global Village inspires “a way to be,” bringing to life the values behind the school’s motto, Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. Not only is the school’s motto on the Mary Crist Fleming Library for all to see as Verum, Bonum, Pulchrum, it is built into the campus itself – in the classrooms, labs, athletic and artistic facilities, and in the community spaces where we practice the values of the school
every day. The next phase of the Global Village further invests in these values with improved residential spaces, classroom spaces, dining facilities, underground parking, and a music center. It also unites the entire school onto one campus.
Bill Eichner, TASIS’s Director of Institutional Advancement, often calls Mrs. Fleming the Founder and her daughter, the Chairman of the Board and TASIS’s first student, Lynn Fleming Aeschliman, the Builder. “The Founder and the Builder'' is a phrase that has made its way into the TASIS vernacular. Mrs. Fleming founded the TASIS legacy while Lynn has built upon that legacy and also extended it into the future. Lynn, combined with the school’s Master Architect David Mayernick, has built the TASIS campus to reflect the school’s
values and ensure the Fleming family legacy continues to serve future generations.
I like to remind faculty that we are doing uniquely noble work in education. One of my favorite quotes that exemplifies the nobility of this work comes from American historian Henry Adams: “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” The legacy of Mrs. Fleming “affects eternity,” but it begins in the present, inside the Global Village, with a thousand small acts of kindness and discovery every day. We are all a part of this legacy, and our work in keeping it alive makes a much-needed difference in an increasingly small world. We are all part of Mrs. Fleming’s family and, as she understood so well, the human family, extending from ourselves to all of humanity, now and for generations to come.

ON LE

In 1969, my father, Edgar de Picciotto, founded UBP with the vision of it being more than just a business—an endeavour to create a family legacy.
Today, UBP remains under the ownership of the de Picciottos and has become one of the major family-owned banks in the world. My family are very much involved in the running of UBP, whether sitting on the Board or in the dayto-day management, assuring its stable governance.
GACY
Our unique status as a familyowned bank sets us apart, ensuring stability, swift decisionmaking, and alignment of our interests with those of our clients. As a family business, UBP understands the challenges faced by similar institutions, especially in terms of legacy planning, investments, and cash flow.
Transparency is also in our DNA, allowing us to become a trusted partner for the long
term. Similarly, the de Picciotto family has always sought to preserve the financial solidity of the bank in order to guarantee its longevity and be able to pass it on to future generations. For our clients, this is a mark of long-term security.
Upholding our responsibilities and confronting challenges headon has always been an integral part of our approach, driven as much by the preservation of our reputation as by our willingness
to build a bank that will stand for the next thousand years.
With the invaluable support of our people, we achieved a smooth succession from my father to the following generation of the de Picciotto family. Now, as the third generation ascends through the ranks, UBP can lay claim to a successful legacy.

by Aurelia and Alexia DochnalAurelia Dochnal ’19 graduates from Yale this May with a B.A. in History and East Asian Languages and Literatures. She is Editor-in-Chief of China Hands Magazine and has worked with the Council on East Asian Studies at Yale MacMillan Center and at Sotheby’s as a Chinese Works of Art intern.
Aurelia Dochnal ’22 is a student at Yale studying Political Science and Philosophy. She serves as editor of the Yale Journal of Literary Translation and is Managing Editor of The Politic, Yale’s political journal.
What is the meaning of legacy for the young generation?
Alexia: I believe that legacy pushes young people to recognize the roots of their beliefs and aspirations, which so often echo the intuitions of those who came before us. Turning to legacy leads us to realize that we inherit both the burdens and the hopes of ages past, and we must carry them forward with a determined grace.
Aurelia: We live uncertain about what our future on Earth might look like. Our generation tries to understand how to live ethically in a world that is breaking down. Legacy, in the midst of environmental and humanitarian disaster, often feels like a precarious dream.
How does the legacy of TASIS and your family impact your life away from home and school?
Alexia: The legacy of TASIS and my family has led me to hold an unrelenting faith in the power of ideas, to turn to the humanities for inspiration and sanctuary, and to remember that we
must always nurture our inner lives.
Aurelia: My life at TASIS was picturesquely beautiful though isolated from harsh reality. For me as a young adult it’s important to understand how to engage with TASIS and family’s cocooned world while staying awake and alive to the suffering and terror that underpins the lucky life my parents worked hard to give me.
Do you believe it’s important for young people to uphold the legacy of their predecessors for the benefit of future generations?
Alexia: Studying the humanities reveals that great ideas of the past often carry latent intuitions whose force has grown obscure, but that could greatly benefit our world today. I think it's crucial for young people to probe, question, and examine those ideas, and to draw stimulation and power from the legacy of those who came before them.
Aurelia: I ask myself how would our definitions
of "legacy" change if we expanded what we meant by "our" legacy. If we looked beyond ourselves, and into the "place even less imaginable to most of us than the city of happiness" as author Ursula K. Le Guin writes in her novel “The Ones That Walk Away from Omelas”.
Metaphorically speaking I want to uphold the legacy of those that walk away from Omelas and to imagine the world in which all children are our children.
What can the older generation do to inspire youth to cherish and preserve their legacy?
Alexia: They can encourage young people to engage with the complexity, difficulty, and entanglement of great ideas from ages past. In my experience, recognizing that the beauty and force of ideas comes from their constant movement, from their lack of straightforward answers, is the most fruitful way to engage in humanistic thinking and to cherish legacy.
Aurelia: They can write poetry and act bravely to help us imagine and construct a more just world.

– Macbeth, Act 3, Scene 1

I fell in love with watches at a very, very early age.” Alessio Zenga’s eyes light up when he talks about when he first discovered his passion. He was six, and saw a Swatch on the wrist of an older boy, the one where the internal clockworks were visible. “It was absolutely fantastic, it was the most beautiful object in the world,” Alessio recalls. “And from then on, I never stopped collecting watches.”
Born in Italy, Alessio moved to Oxford, England, to attend an international school at age 11. He returned to Italy for university, where he studied economics. But he soon realized that finance was
not his passion, so he returned to university to study art history, and his life changed; he met his wife, and found that his studies added a new depth and legitimacy to his passion for watches.
“An accountant suggested creating a company to manage my collection. It struck me that I could do this as a business.” Alessio began to expand his collection and meet other collectors, quickly finding a tight community of enthusiasts from many different countries. In just a few decades, Alessio has become one of the world’s most celebrated and respected horologists.
“When I look at a vintage watch, I look at it as an art historian would a piece of
art”, he says. “I try to understand its origins, the context where it was developed, the aesthetics of the time when it was built. This analysis is important, as a watch can lead a complicated life.” Alessio loves the storytelling element; “so many beautiful, incredible watches are a testament to their times.”
So what makes a watch valuable? Rarity, of course, and demand, but Alessio doesn’t bow to trends, “Some watches are strikingly undervalued, but value is secondary. What is important is the pleasure and passion that a watch provides. Everyone must work within a budget, but considerations about value are the last to be made for every serious collector, as that is not something that guides you. You buy a watch because you fall in love with it, and it gives you something on an emotional level.”
Alessio’s personal passion is vintage watches, which is where his expertise lies. And for him, they aren’t just something to look at. “I use my vintage watches with great pleasure,” he says. “I love the relationship with the watch. I love winding it in the morning before wearing it, the manual winding mechanisms. It is wearing a work of art on my wrist.”
Alessio is connected with the most prominent watch collectors in the world, and he usually buys from and sells to private collectors.
He also buys from auction houses, which often have interesting and rare specimens. Alessio loves to share his passion, which is why he enjoys working with collectors. Selling watches feels like a “sacrifice; I only work with people who share my passion and vision. I develop strong bonds of friendships with those I curate collections for, as it creates bridges across cultures.”
As someone who is on the lookout not just for himself but for his collector clients, what does he look for in a watch? “I only buy watches I would want for myself,” he says. “My whole inventory is an expression of my tastes. First, it needs to be beautiful, aesthetically pleasing. It needs to be historically relevant. And in immaculate condition; I make no compromises on that, it must be perfectly preserved. But it also must touch my heart,” he says. “I buy a watch because every single time I look at it, I fall in love with it again.”
Connecting people with watches he knows they will love is the best part of the job for him. And what once was
a niche market in northern Italy soon expanded to Rome, then to Europe and the US. Japan is an established market, and Alessio has delighted in how the disparate cultures of Italy and Japan have created watch collectors with similar enthusiasm for precision. “Both cultures have developed over the centuries, and both have an attention to detail and aesthetics that very few cultures have,” he says. Since Covid, Chinese collectors have risen in profile, particularly for vintage watches. It is a complex process to find watches in perfect condition for himself and his clients, particularly as the number of collectors is rising. “It’s like art; sometimes you must wait until a generational transition.”
The generational stories behind watches is fascinating for Alessio.
“Humanity has always been fascinated by the measurement of time,” he says. “This is strictly tied to our mortality. Time is finite, and we want to measure it to grasp it.”
From sundials to water clocks to mechanical clocks, humankind has never lost interest in horology. “Even today, an artisanal watchmaker will use his hands

and mind with the sake skills that a Greek philosopher used in constructing a water clock. This legacy is as ancient as Western culture itself, it is the legacy of humanity, one of the few we can directly tie to our cultural roots.”
BILL EICHNER
Bill first met Mrs. Fleming while working at the American School in Florence and he became the person in Florence she could call to meet for dinner, or to take her to her nearby Capitignano home. Bill, who holds graduate degrees in Art History and Education, moved to TASIS to teach Art History in 1983.
Since then he has headed up the TASIS Cyprus and TASIS France programs, served as Academic Dean and Director of Admissions, and in 2017 became Director of Institutional Advancement. Beloved by four decades of alumni, Bill’s steadfast presence and insightful perspective has had a deep influence on students, families, and the School.
"MCF indeed had the recipe for starting a school, and there was nothing that brought her more fulfillment than the creation and promise of a new program. But she left it to the next generation to build upon her legacy and reach for the ever-higher standards that today keep TASIS competitive with the very best schools in the world."

DAVID MAYERNIK
Legacy is both what we inherit and what we pass on. It therefore depends on seeing ourselves as part of a continuum, where we have responsibilities not only to the present but the past and the future as well. In architecture that has a lot to do with durability, both physically and culturally.
The only things we can be sure will last are those things that have lasted. At TASIS we have privileged durable construction, but also durability of architectural language (classical), the meanings the language conveys, and the role of architecture in shaping community.
The buildings of the TASIS campus represent a stable, enduring approach
to building responsibly on our precious land.
They also build a community of values by creating positive open spaces—piazzas and terraces, stairways, etc.—where the shared experience of a noble environment will hopefully create in students a lifelong desire to build and do well in the world and for the world. For Lynn Fleming Aeschliman and TASIS the campus is not only where education happens, it is itself educational.
It passes along a cultural heritage not only by conserving but by adding to its inheritance. I believe the TASIS campus is one of the most noble environments built in the last century anywhere in the world.

David is a practicing urban designer, architect, artist, and writer whose work has been exhibited and published internationally. He is a fellow of the American Academy in Rome and the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA). He is a leader in the contemporary classical renaissance and has won numerous international awards and competitions. For nearly three decades David has been the campus planner and architect for TASIS, which in 2016 was awarded an Honorable Mention, INTBAU Excellence Awards for Urban Design and in 2014 won a Jury Prize, Prix Européen d’Architecture Philippe Rotthier. His project for the M. Crist Fleming Library at TASIS Switzerland won a 2005 Palladio Award from Traditional Building Magazine. He is a talented fresco painter and artist, multi-published author, and sought-after speaker. David is an associate professor with the University of Notre Dame’s School of Architecture.

LEGACY AND ART
AKKA Project
Empowering African Artists
Led by a passion for the beauty of Africa and African art, the founders of AKKA Project, Lidija Kostic Khachatourian and Kristian Khachatourian, started their journey as African art collectors, which quickly bloomed into an expanded path as cultural entrepreneurs.
Leveraging their profound interest, energy and motivation, they have been dedicated to ameliorating AKKA Project, which promotes African art and culture, while simultaneously

distinguishing the nature of AKKA and the uniqueness of its approach to this intricate world of beauty and art. They ensure that every oeuvre and all artists’ projects communicate a personal journey of the unique experiences of the creators, their explorations and interpretations of the world, and their messages all through the medium of African art, generating a kaleidoscope of diversity piquing the interest of all around them.
Together they have built a great collection of established and emerging talents from the burgeoning African art market. They have explored 18 countries of the vast African continent, enriching themselves, AKKA, their collectors and most importantly, their fellow artists.
"Throughout our journey into this world, encompassing our roles as collectors, project incubators, and gallerists, a significant portion has been intertwined with our children.
Together, we've embarked on countless adventures across South Africa, Mozambique, Kenya, Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda, and Ethiopia. Long car rides have led us to artist studios nestled in the outskirts of bustling urban areas, as well as gallery and art collective openings. We can still vividly recall their solemn expressions when we

promised, 'Just one more museum, then we can head to the pool.'
As our children have matured, they've absorbed valuable lessons that we endeavored to impart during our travels together. We aimed to instill in them a love for exploration, the ability to embrace the uncertainty inherent in travel, and to find reflections of themselves in the diverse tapestry of the world. Yet, above all, our guiding principle has been this: “do what you love, and you’ll never be wrong”.

The Man: Larger Than Life
In a career spanning more that 30 years, Mo was our eyes on the frontline in every situation and his honest unwavering approach to photojournalism earned him the unconditional respect of both friends and enemies alike.
Reinata Sadimba, Mozambique (1945-)

Mo covered every major event in Africa and beyond, braving 28 days of torture, surviving bombs and bullets, even the loss of his left arm in an ammunition dump explosion, to emerge as the most decorated news cameraman of all time
By any standards, Mo’s life was truly extraordinary; action-packed, full of pain and passion and inseparable from the troubled chronicle of emergent Africa.
Reinata Sadimba was born in 1945 in Homba, Cape Delgado Province, Mozambique.
Orphaned by her father, she remained with her mother and three brothers and when she was very young, was forced into a combined marriage that did not last long but from which she had three children. The daughter of peasants, she received the traditional education for the Maconde ethnicity, which included manufacturing utilitarian objects in clay, such as plates and pitchers.
Being a very original and independent woman in a small village caused her many misunderstandings and difficulties. In this traditional society, potters were exclusively women, but gradually Renata transformed her pots into anthropomorphic figures,

changing the role of the potter into that of an artist and invading a space, reserved until then for men.
Reinata is considered one of the most important female artists on the African continent. She has received numerous awards and her works are represented in various institutions such as the National Museum of Mozambique, the Museum of Ethnology of Lisbon, the United Nations headquarters in New York, and the Modern Art collection of Culturgest, in addition to numerous private collections around the world.
She held solo and collective exhibitions in Mozambique, Portugal, Switzerland, Tanzania, South Africa, Denmark, France, Italy, the UK, and the USA.

Paul Njihia
is a self-taught artist based at the Kobo Trust Studios in Nairobi, Kenya.
In the student series, the paintings are mainly influenced by his experiences when he was a student. In the artworks, he tries to capture the familiar school environment and school activities that everyone is familiar with in an effort to evoke emotions on what school meant to the viewer. In Kenya and all over the world, the school system is marred by concerns of quality, relevance, and emphasis on passing exams. The student’s worth is solely based on the grades and performance.
In 2014, the young artist won the Award of Most Promising Male Artist by the National Museum of Kenya.

Born into the esteemed Scavia family in 1998, in the vibrant heart of Milan, my story is woven into the fabric of a city celebrated for its monumental contributions to art, fashion, and design. As a scion of a high-class jewelry dynasty known worldwide since 1911, my life has been a blend of tradition and innovation, heritage and personal ambition. This narrative is not just about the continuity of a prestigious legacy; it's a deeply personal account of artistic discovery, entrepreneurial spirit, and the vision to lead our family business into new horizons.

My formative years were profoundly shaped by an unparalleled educational journey at TASIS—a
place that, as I told Lynn Aeschliman, is “beautiful, too beautiful”.
This institution, nestled amidst the scenic beauty of Switzerland, became the crucible for my burgeoning talents. It was here, in this melting pot of cultures and ideas, that I began to realize the extent of my artistic abilities and entrepreneurial potential.
TASIS stood as a beacon of academic excellence and professional development.
The School’s ethos, emphasizing the nurturing of diverse talents and fostering leadership, resonated deeply with me.
I recall vividly the moments of deep inspiration in art classes, where the interplay of light and shadow on canvas mirrored the facets of a finely-cut gem. Such experiences enriched my aesthetic sensibility and fueled my passion for the jewelry craft that runs in my veins.
TASIS AND SCAVIA, A LEGACY OF ELEGANCE AND INNOVATION.
"MY LIFE HAS BEEN A BLEND OF TRADITION AND INNOVATION, HERITAGE AND PERSONAL AMBITION".
Equally transformative were the discussions in our business studies classes, where I learned the importance of vision, innovation, and sustainability in entrepreneurship. These lessons became the bedrock of my ambition to lead and evolve our family business. The international milieu of TASIS, with peers from every continent, broadened my horizons and instilled in me a global perspective. It was a melting pot of cultures, ideas, and aspirations, mirroring the diverse and interconnected world in which our family business operates.
Instead of pursuing further academic studies in the US after TASIS, I chose to dive directly into the heart of our family business. I moved to Antwerp where I quickly recognized the immense value of specialized knowledge and hands-on experience in our craft. I returned to Milan and to the family business, eventually expanding to my other home, Lugano, with a SCAVIA boutique in Via Nassa.
Working closely with my father, Fulvio Scavia, we continue to design and craft jewelry that transcends mere adornment, becoming symbols of beauty, innovation, and exclusivity. Our work, blending his vast experience with my fresh perspective, ensures that each piece that emerges from our atelier is a masterpiece, embodying the

essence of the SCAVIA legacy while pushing the boundaries of creativity and craftsmanship.
The decision to establish our presence in Lugano was more than a business expansion; it was a homecoming, a fusion of my personal journey with the professional path I was destined to walk.
As the SCAVIA boutique in Via Nassa thrived, it stood as
A shining example of how passion, heritage, and innovation could come together, creating not just jewelry, but legacies that would endure for generations to come.

Thomas Bajoni: The Tax Lawyer with a passion for Andy Warhol
Thomas Bajoni is considered one of the world’s leading experts on international taxation. Based in Lugano, Thomas specializes in assisting firms, entrepreneurs, and managers who are relocating to Switzerland. He is also an art collector and advisor whose family owns a significant collection of Andy Warhol artworks called “the Bajoni Collection”,' which is often lent to museums for Pop-Art and Warhol exhibitions. A member of the Monaco Yacht Club, Thomas was born in London and raised between Milan, London, and New York
Tell us about your passion for Andy Warhol.
My parents got married in 1968 and went to the United States for their honeymoon. One afternoon, while walking the streets of Manhattan, a stranger stopped them and invited them to an event by a young artist named Andy Warhol. My parents were so fascinated by his art that they decided to purchase their first artwork on that same day. They then became very fond of Andy Warhol and have collected his artworks since. Through time, patience, and worldwide acquisitions, they assembled the Bajoni collection. I grew up surrounded by such artworks and instinctively loved them from when I was very young.
What
are your thoughts on the growing trend of investing in art?
As a general statement, art is one of the best ways to pass on wealth from one generation to the next. You never fully own an artwork, you simply take care of it for the next generation. Inherited art collections are important for cultural heritage and financial value and establish a strong legacy between the generations.
From a financial point of view, consistency is key. Warhol, whose works were expensive when he was alive, turned out to be a phenomenal investment with an incredible return.

Martyn Dukes
Without doubt many older TASIS alumni will vividly remember the various disciplines of the visual art family being dotted around the campus like far-flung satellites. Many can trace fond memories of where (and with whom) they took those first teetering steps into the magical world of art and design. Today, we are housed under one roof in the Ferit Şahenk Fine Arts Center, but the culture and the urban myth surrounding the Coach House studios, the photography darkrooms, and the many other and various spaces across the campus, which have at one time served the purposes of a studio, including a fledgling architecture course buried in a garage, are still ever present. They have become synonymous with a vibrant and strong tradition of art and design that has flourished at TASIS over sixty-odd years.
As retirement beckons and I begin to look back over a career spanning 40 years, I can say that it has been a particular privilege to teach art at TASIS. Oscar Wilde was of the opinion that, “Art never expresses anything but itself” and Marshal McLuhan commented, “Art is whatever you can get away with.” These extreme views of art as aesthetics are a far cry from the more genteel vision of art as a moral force, where perhaps art should “teach and delight” (docere et delectare) – or better yet, and a direction I might lean towards, “to teach by delighting” (docere delecando).
The inspiration and power of the visual arts plays a vital role in enabling TASIS students to enhance their creative talent and develop their artistic skills.
It also sets out to build a sustainable and bright future in so many other ways; TASIS artists are not only taught the many and varied skills needed to make art, but are also encouraged to see, question, understand and even shape their world beyond the school gates.
As visual arts continue to foster and share these significant gifts, I can think of no better legacy than this. Genteel? Perhaps “to teach by delighting” has more steel than I might have ever imagined.
Martyn was born in 1958 and raised in England. Trained in Fine Art, he lived in both the UK and France before setting on the Collina d’Oro in 2006, taking up the post of Head of Visual Arts at TASIS. He exhibits regularly in France and Switzerland.
Despite the ceaseless challenges posed by maintaining his practice as an artist alongside that of the demands of the art teacher, he finds each brings satisfaction, and each sustains the other. Martyn divides his time between the Tessin and Mauvezin, a small village near Toulouse, in France.
As a painter, Martyn’s palette and brush strokes on the canvas remain very direct interpretations of the world around him, and much of his work over the years pays homage to the long tradition of European landscape painting. There is a consistent and meaningful engagement with composition and each painting is born out of a strong sense of drawing, and on the legacy of his great grandfather, who was a member of the Royal College of Art at the beginning of the 20th century.

Simona Bellini
As a teacher at TASIS in the Middle School, my fundamental goal is to ignite within my students a profound love for art and a boundless sense of creativity.

Beyond merely producing artwork, I believe creativity serves as a cornerstone for navigating the complexities of life. Thus, alongside cultivating their artistic passions, I endeavor to impart the significance of dedication and resilience –virtues that serve as catalysts for turning aspirations into tangible achievements.
Central to my teaching philosophy is instilling a lasting sense of joy in the act of creation. I want my students to perceive art not as a rigid set of rules to adhere to, but rather as a fluid and liberating expression of their innermost thoughts and emotions. In fostering this mindset, I emphasize that there exists no definitive "right" or "wrong" approach to making art. Instead, I encourage them
Caroline Rossi
In a bustling art classroom filled with the vibrant energy of creativity, elementary students eagerly collaborate on a special project destined for a gala event. With brushes in hand and minds full of imagination, they embark on the task of creating two group paintings centered around the timeless symbol of a tree, representing both education and life itself.
As they blend colors and share ideas, the students understand the profound significance behind their artwork: just as a tree grows stronger with nurturing
to embrace the creative process with enthusiasm and a sense of lightness, allowing their imaginations to roam freely without fear of judgment or inadequacy.
By nurturing a supportive and inclusive environment, I aim to empower my students to explore their artistic instincts with confidence and curiosity. I believe that through experimentation and risk-taking, they can unlock hidden reservoirs of creativity and unlock their full artistic potential. Ultimately, my goal is to cultivate in my students a lifelong appreciation for the transformative power of art, equipping them with the tools they need to thrive as both artists and individuals in an ever-evolving world.
care, so too does their education flourish when nurtured by collaboration and teamwork.
With each stroke of the brush, they celebrate the power of unity and the boundless potential that emerges when individuals come together for a common purpose. These paintings serve not only as expressions of creativity but also as tangible reminders of the collective journey towards knowledge and enlightenment.”

ANECDOTE
By Dr. Christopher LoveIf you want to know what excellence means at TASIS, look no further than the tower on Casa Fleming. Standing sentry over our Hill of Gold and Lake Lugano, Casa Fleming seems to stand above the fray, its structure protective and open, lofty but welcoming.
To me, this structure makes concrete the ideals of “excellence” that shape TASIS’ mission and mindset. Rooted in the Latin for rising out high, for towering beyond (ex + cellere), the word “excellence”, in its most banal sense, is too often reduced to a language of publicity, the dull injunction to be “simply the best”. To be the strongest, the fastest, the smartest, the most beautiful: all hackneyed superlatives, in the end.
I feel lucky to be part of an institution whose founding ideals ask that we remain vigilant against the hucksterism of these “best”’s. TASIS, at its core, asks the question:
“What does it mean to tower as a human being, to excel not in response to shabby but seductive means but as an end unto itself?” To ponder this question requires humility: a humanistic response to excellence respects the foundations of the past while embracing the adventure of the new. At TASIS, excellence demands these meshed dynamics of humility and risk, tradition and invention, stretching and reflection.
Jutting above a magnificent magnolia tree, Casa Fleming is a tower beautifully dwarfed by the mountains of San Salvatore and Monte Bre. We are reminded of the fact that true education

stands lofty but respectful before the challenges that loom beyond the academic sanctuary. Mrs. Fleming’s vision was lofty but rooted in ways that animate the lived experience of our TASIS community. From its beginnings, TASIS inspired its students to travel and adventure in search of the new—per the cliché—but also the ancient and foundational.
To excel, for TASIS students, requires a willingness to wander ruins, master languages, crest mountains, commit to global service, stride the stage, and live its ideals. To excel in these endeavors requires a sense of dilemma and nuance. No pursuit does not pull from other worthy ventures.
TASIS asks its students, teachers, parents, and staff to master the art of counterpoise and poise, with an emphasis on the word, “art”. All the
pieces matter. Since arriving at TASIS in 2012, I have certainly been stretched, always in a community of students, colleagues, and parents devoted to living Mrs. Fleming’s vision of buoyant striving.
I have worn a dress on stage, danced with a giant fish mask on my head, taught English to children in Ethiopia, coached basketball, climbed San Salvatore and Dante’s Purgatory, led students through medieval Florence, and even sang in public (my greatest fear). Twelve years ago, I could not have envisaged or appreciated what all of it meant. TASIS teaches us that risks, struggles, decisions, and revisions all inform and enliven a kind of excellence I believe is unique to our community.

My name is Sophie Isabel Mesaric, I am 14 years old, and I currently play in the Swiss national team. I dream of becoming a very good tennis player… hopefully, the best one day.
Besides consistent manners, good behaviour, modesty, and respect for others, my family and TASIS taught me to focus on responsibility and ownership, enjoying what gives me satisfaction, staying focused, and expanding my own knowledge of myself for all my goals.
Our five children started their journey at TASIS, with our eldest daughter among the first group of kids attending the new elementary school. As they have grown up, each of our kids followed their own interests and talents in different ways, but taking their first steps into life at TASIS not only taught them the English language but helped them love and appreciate the American culture. As young adults, they have spread around the world to pursue their passions, and some of them eventually landed in the United States. Caterina, now 22, is graduating in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University where she is also pursuing her master’s degree. Maria Adele, now 20, is also a
The legacy of TASIS, its ethics, and my family’s core values have become part of me. I have learned to be a good and valuable example to others and to take care of my own reputation.

In both my performance and teaching, I aim to inspire and empower others to discover their own musical potential and nurture a love for music that transcends mere melody lines or performance. Since music's powerful universal language fosters harmony and unity, I desire to inspire my students to strive for musical excellence. I believe it is the key to making a positive impact on the world around us.

When we decided to move to Switzerland in 2016 we did not know which city would be our next home. Our decision breaker would be the school for our daughter. Our eyes brightened when we entered TASIS for the first time. The golden light of Lugano shading the campus was magical. We were immediately captivated by the happiness on campus.
When our daughter joined grade
4 the school opened an after school activity in coding, and our daughter Madalena joined happily as she had already been coding for two years then. The following year the Robotics club opened, and the coaches decided to compete in the First Lego League, a worldwide competition with more than 30,000 teams competing all around the world. In this competition the students must build a robot and code it to perform several tasks
in a specific mat predefined by the FLL organization. By then students were doing it on the floor and we all remember their surprised and intrigued faces at the competition when they saw the competition was done on tables and all their competitors were familiar with that! With the coordination of coach Amy Bloodworth they were able to bring a TeamWork Award. That was the stimulus everyone needed to continue.
STEAM
AN ACRONYM FOR SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ARTS, AND MATHEMATICS, PLAYS A CRUCIAL ROLE IN SCHOOLS BY FOSTERING INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING, PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS, CREATIVITY, AND INNOVATION. IT PREPARES STUDENTS FOR THE MODERN WORKFORCE BY COMBINING ACADEMIC SUBJECTS WITH HANDS-ON, PROJECT-BASED LEARNING EXPERIENCES, EQUIPPING THEM WITH ESSENTIAL SKILLS FOR SUCCESS IN VARIOUS FIELDS. ADDITIONALLY, STEAM EDUCATION PROMOTES CRITICAL THINKING, COLLABORATION, AND ADAPTABILITY, WHICH ARE ESSENTIAL IN TODAY'S RAPIDLY EVOLVING WORLD.
From that moment until today a lot was created at TASIS around this program. Today we are happy to embrace a program from ES to HS. All three sections compete in different championships and all have been bringing awards every year. And the cherry on top of the cake, twice in two years in a row my daughter’s team (an all-girl team) went to the World championships in the USA, proudly representing Switzerland but moreover, proudly representing TASIS and its Mission and Values.
A special message to a very special school that created an entire program because some students and a never restless coach kept pushing. A school that allows a student to live his or her dream dream even if disrupting the status quo is a unique school.
As parents we were watering this seed and watching it flourish and last year we thought what more could be done from our part in order to emphasize the success of the school program. So in 2023 we launched the TPA STEAM Booster Club with only two goals in mind: raising awareness towards the TASIS community on the topic STEAM and our Unique Mentorship Program.
Inside our Awareness program the most successful is the Volunteering program where High School students volunteer in Coding and STEAM workshops for the elementary students. The interaction between these different age groups has proved most fruitful and we have the workshops at maximum capacity every week.
Our Unique Mentorship Program started at the end of last year and has become more and more popular. Our goal is to touch every student on campus somehow. In this program we bring potential mentors to talk in an informal way to our children: from artificial intelligence to the future of architecture to project management. The objective is the students to listen, ask questions and have access to CEOs, Founders, Professors, etc that are available to mentor them.
We all in TPA STEAM Booster Club are already working for next year and we look forward to continuing supporting and giving a small hand to the excellence of TASIS.
AnaHERE BE THERE MUST A SCHOOL
The Founding of TASIS
It was past midnight and I was crossing the Alps. I had a blue Volkswagen bus, an MG TC, 70 suitcases full of books, linens, games, and peanut butter, a German shepherd dog, a spare husband, and some of those things belonging to someone else that I am most noted for having— namely, children. I had two of my own with me, to be sure, but the others I seem to have acquired somewhere between Philadelphia and Paris.
We arrived at the Villa Verbanella, which had been rented sight unseen in December, to be the home of Swiss Holiday summer school, the first TASIS program. The villa was located high atop a series of hairpin curves. Even in the halflight of morning and totally exhausted, I was so stunned by the beauty of the vast expanse of Lago Maggiore stretching out below that I determined at that precise moment that there must be a school—an American school—here on this very spot.
This was the 30th of June, 1956, and in sheer intoxication with the startling loveliness I opened TASIS ten weeks later with 12 children and six faculty. Three of the children were mine, three were day students from Locarno, three were somewhat homeless waifs, and one very nearly made me a correspondent in a divorce case.

The Founding of TASIS
The second year, TASIS grew from 12 to 30 students, so another large villa had to be annexed. In the summer of the second year enrollment was heading for 50 students, and no house large enough to hold us was available. Desperate, I returned to Lugano to seek possibilities there since Locarno offered nothing. With the dear Lord taking care of those who call upon him, a deserted house was produced. Weeds in the park were waist high, windows were gaping holes, paneless with even the metal frames twisted, and dust, dirt, and rubbish had accumulated for three years. But it was available—and very empty.
I went to work on September 1 to prepare for the opening of school on the 20th. Workmen thought me insane, but fell to with a vengeance, they being Italians and I being a woman. Carpenters, painters, ironworkers, gardeners, glazers, masons, electricians, plumbers—they swarmed over the building, bumping into each other, falling down stairs, but working at breakneck speeds.
There was of course no money to finance the project, and local Swiss bankers were so scandalized that anyone would attempt to build two houses in six weeks that they promptly refused any loan to that crazy American woman.
Two years later, an enrollment of 85 and the same problems. Where to house the students? Again at the last moment, destiny delivered Villa de Nobili in Montagnola. But again it was September 1 with a deadline of only three weeks for conversion to school needs. History surely does repeat itself—again workmen falling over each other, this time extending beyond the actual opening so that students too were tripping over electric wires, falling into cesspools being prepared, getting stuck in wet paint. And there was no time to install central heating, so all 85 students had to be shipped to the Monopol in Andermatt for January and February so that the entire Villa de Nobili could be piped from top to bottom.
I might go on for countless pages recounting 20 years of challenging adversities and moments of near failure, but matched by those glorious moments, felt particularly deeply at graduation, when each crop of wonderful young people marches slowly across the TASIS stage into their unknown futures. All the reward is there when you sense what TASIS has meant to them. To many, TASIS has been not merely a second home, but a spiritual home. It has often been the most cherished period of their young lives.
I fervently hope and pray that TASIS will go on forever, for the most strategic challenges for any country or civilization will always be the education of its young. And human understanding must advance to match and surpass that of our too materialistic technology. This can be achieved only by a heightened dedication to internationalism and to learning.
Excerpted from an article written by Mrs. Fleming for the 1976 alumni magazine to celebrate 20 years of TASIS

LYNN FLEMING AESCHLIMAN
THE BUILDER
Lynn Fleming Aeschliman ’63 wears a lot of hats. Officially, she’s Chairman of the TASIS Board of Directors and Chairman of the Board Campus Development Committee, and she has also served as Vice-Chariman of the TASIS Foundation Board. She’s the first “TASIS Lifer” who spent most of her education at TASIS. She’s a wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, granddaughter. She’s a founder, mediator, entrepreneur, and savior of old edifices and builder of new ones. She’s an educator. She’s a visionary. It is undeniable that TASIS is the school it is today because of Lynn’s foresight, her audacity, her fearlessness. As well as her unwavering commitment to TASIS: its past, present, and future; in this, she is not unlike her mother…..

THE EARLY YEARS
Growing up in the orbit of someone as dynamic and fearless as Mrs. Fleming left an indelible impact on Lynn in particular. “I was raised by a single, divorced mother,” Lynn recalls. “I was expected to work. My mother was never visibly discouraged. Even as a child, she gave me great opportunities and expected me to perform.”
In addition to her creativity and productivity, Lynn’s kindness towards others has remained a core value throughout her life as she has quietly supported and guided countless others….
One particular legacy imparted by her mother is the importance of inspiring buildings, and the impact that these have on people. “Beautiful spaces were just part of my life,” she remembers. “As a child, we lived in a garage, a tool shed, a greenhouse—all of which my mother transformed.” This has resulted in an uncanny awareness of spaces…. She can visualize the potential of a place, be it a room, a building, or an expanse of open land ripe for construction or protection.
As a teenager Lynn had considered a number of career options, including veterinary medicine and even surgery; she spent months of work experience with a surgeon aunt in California…. Culture has always inspired her, particularly architecture. So when, in 1968, Mrs. Fleming bought a remote property in Tuscany, Capitignano, with dilapidated farmhouses and barns and a crumbling chicken coop, Lynn spent a year restoring and developing the main villa, and periodically over subsequent years several others. She befriended and employed local craftsmen and used local materials to make the buildings habitable—and beautiful.
Lynn first met her “life and soul companion” Michael Aeschliman in 1966 while they were both students at Columbia University in New York…. They were engaged in 1972, marrying in 1974, and living in New York City for several years before returning to Europe. In the mid-1980s they went back to the US, where Lynn started an architectural restoration business in Virginia.... Lynn bought and took down often ramshackle 18th-century wooden buildings in rural Virginia, moved them to the Charlottesville, Albemarle County area, then renovated them using original materials. “I can see how to renovate an old building made of good materials,” she says, and “I love the challenge of creating new uses for existing spaces. It’s problem-solving, because there is always a solution, one just has to be creative.”
RETURNING TO EUROPE (AND TO TASIS)
After renovating the TASIS-England campus in the mid-1970s, and living in the USA 1984-1993, with her own annual summer programs in French Switzerland and southern France, Lynn and her family returned to Europe in the mid-1990s. She was responsible for buildings for present and future TASIS programs—new buildings, chateaux, stately homes, even castles. At one point Mrs. Fleming considered relocating the School to Geneva because the Montagnola campus was so small and difficult to expand. But Lynn saw the potential and possibilities for growth, through acquiring more land and developing a campus plan. “The Collina d’Oro is a beautiful place.

This is the legacy, it’s here, I felt: with the alumni loving Lugano, and the memories they have—it’s incredible, the attachment people have. Especially the boys of Hadsall!” So her focus was on improving the Lugano campus.
Twenty years before, Lynn had been thrust into overseeing the TASIS England campus and the school too. In the late 1990s, to perpetuate TASIS, the Fleming family decided to donate the Schools and properties to the non-profit TASIS Foundation. And as Mrs. Fleming, Lynn, Gai, and Tom Fleming began figuring out how to structure this development, they realized that each school would need its own Board—a new concept for TASIS, which had always shared funding from program to program, school to school. “I realized that TASIS Lugano needed to be independent,” Lynn says….
“Michael often says I have education to the bottom of my fingertips with the experience I’ve gathered in a lifetime with my mother and starting my own programs and schools,” Lynn says. She had been considering opening an elementary school in Lugano for 25 years but was unable to get permissions in place. But in 2005 it was finally possible. “My mother asked, where are you going to get the kids? And I reminded her that she started TASIS with only nine kids, plus her own three. She always believed in starting small, begging or borrowing—students and funds—along the way, and doing a damn good job. And then it grows.”
Indeed, it did grow. “It took off so fast the first year that we had to keep moving locations. We had 45 kids the first year, 90 the second—it was staggering. And the timing of things was really important. We hit the market just right.” Which is certainly part of the success, but also critical was Lynn’s understanding that TASIS needed more profitability, and expanding enrollment to include more day students was the answer. Currency fluctuations, international political turmoil, and many other uncontrollable factors affect international schools. Lynn’s foresight has ensured that the School remains in good financial stead.
“My life is filled with extraordinary, providential encounters, and making something out of them,” Lynn says. Some might call it a nose for perfect timing, but Lynn has a deep faith in God, and the serendipity of one particular meeting set the stage for the campus as we know it today.

A REMARKABLE PARTNERSHIP
In the mid-1990s TASIS needed a new gymnasium, on a small, restricted campus…. The initial proposed design was hypermodern in style, “a big box crashing into the hill.” As a classicist, Lynn saw this as incoherent with the existing elegance of the campus. On a broader scale, however, Lynn also was frustrated that there was no cohesion, no coordinated vision for the future of the campus.
Around this time, Lynn and Michael visited the village of La Napoule on the French Riviera to view a chateau she was considering for a summer program. A program for architects run by an American university was in the chateau at the time, and Lynn met a few of the architects—all hyper-modernists; but one of them mentioned another architect who was also in La Napoule, a classicist.
So Lynn approached David Mayernik, a brilliant draftsman and University of Notre Dame-trained classical architect. “We were having breakfast on a gorgeous stone table. And he invited me to see his work…he really knew how to draw!” Lynn told him that TASIS was about to embark on a new gymnasium and how ugly the proposed plan was. She mentioned the lack of a master plan. And she invited him to Lugano.
David remembers the exchange going something like this:
L: Young man (I was 36) I hear you’re an architect.
D: I am.
L: I like classical architecture.
D: I’m a classical architect.
L: We need a master plan for our campus in Switzerland.
A few days later, David was in Lugano on a campus tour given by Lynn, with a running commentary about the School’s history and Mrs. Fleming. “Just before I was to leave for my train Lynn said, ‘So, young man, if we hired you what would you propose doing?’ I realized that this was a make-or-break question, so I decided to lay my cards on the table. There was a map of the campus and Certenago, and I put my hand over Certenago and then over the land around Monticello—both about the same size—and said, ‘You could build Certanago around Monticello and preserve the rest of the campus as green space.’ And Lynn exclaimed, ‘You’re hired!’”
So began a partnership that now stretches over nearly three decades, of joy, stress, and revisions, and that has resulted in a campus that has been called by Architectural Digest the most beautiful in the world. David and Lynn envisioned a village sympathetic to the historic buildings in the vicinity and on the campus, intertwined with elegant new buildings housing state-of-the-art classrooms, gathered around green spaces for work and play. “It’s the most difficult, confined, restricted building space David has ever worked with,” Lynn recalls.
The obstacles began when David’s classical style jarred with the local planners, who were modernists. But Lynn doesn’t quit, she pivots. She tracked down the now-elderly zoning expert who wrote the “building code Bible” for Ticino. “We found him and told him that we couldn’t move forward with David’s design with the code written as it is. So this man suggested we could follow the code by making new buildings contiguous to others: instead of building new, we would supposedly be creating additions to the existing buildings.” This breakthrough allowed the first of David’s creations, the Palestra gymnasium, to be built in 1999, and echoes David’s initial thoughts about Certenago: creating a true village atmosphere, buildings fused to complement each other and inspire those who use them.
“Lynn and I have adapted, but never really compromised, in the sense of sacrificing our principles,” David says. “It’s a bit of a chess match, since rightly or wrongly the Collina d’Oro authorities, and much of elite opinion, have made building new Certenagos effectively illegal. Things are changing for the better in the US, and in the UK, but Switzerland is a bit behind.” Building codes and zoning regulations are driven by a hyper-modernist agenda: “from Bauhaus to our house,” as Tom Wolfe satirized it.
The achievement of David and Lynn is impressive: nine new buildings have been erected in less than 25 years. The School has also acquired and adapted several properties to expand the campus. Lynn and David remain steadfast in their commitment. David says: “Lynn and I like challenges, and don’t shrink from battles. But most importantly, I think we’re doing something really important, not just for TASIS but as a model of how the Collina d’Oro, Ticino, and the rest of the world should be building: concentrate new buildings into compact village or urban environments, and preserve larger areas of open green space as a consequence. If the area around the campus had done the same thing over the last seventy years much more of the historic landscape of the Collina d’Oro would have been preserved. It’s a model of sustainable development. And it’s a community. Most architects don’t get the chance to see something of this complexity realized over such a long period of time. I feel lucky.”
The newer campus buildings already include a number of sustainable features, such as groundwater heating, geothermal pumps, double-glazed windows, and efficient air conditioning systems. But Lynn wants more: renewable energy, solar panels, even generating its own power. Ambitious, but not for Lynn and David.
As her husband Michael says, “They're a great team because he's enormously gifted, and Lynn is a very intelligent patron who is also visually very adept. She has a very advanced understanding of space utilization, interior decoration, and the School’s practical needs. And so the two of them have proved to be an extraordinarily effective working partnership.”
A CRITICAL FUTURE
Lynn has focused much of her energy on completing the Global Village Master Plan…. Why is this project so important to her? “My mother raised me to finish what I started,” Lynn says. “And if I hand it over, nobody will have the drive, interest, or taste that is required to do it well. I don’t trust anyone else, or a committee, to have the chutzpah, the perseverance.”
David describes the Global Village path so far as a paradox: “At some level it has felt like a long time since we started. At another, the campus has grown quickly in spurts—like a jasmine plant—that have been the result of bold decisions of Lynn and TASIS….. The reality is that our campus master plan has been realized in what seems like a series of sprints over more than two decades! That’s very much Lynn in action.”
Lynn is the last of four generations of educators who, for over 125 years, have educated children in beautiful buildings and inspiring surroundings. Spaces can change the way children learn: “it’s architectural, but also instructional and educational,” Lynn says. “As long as I can, I will continue this trajectory.”
David adds, “I think Lynn sees the campus plan finished in her mind as much as I do, and wants to make it real. Partly, I think, because she sees herself as her mother’s heir, not just of TASIS but of the taste that shaped all the choices of the TASIS campus locations across Europe.”
Lynn’s energy and dedication would be impressive for those twenty years younger, but her efforts are even more astonishing when coupled with a number of health complexities. She has lived with Multiple Sclerosis since the late 1970s, has had unpublicized major surgery in Florence and Zurich, and in the past six years has had surgery on her lungs for cancer. The most recent years have not been easy either, with severe complications and rehabilitation required after heart surgery in February. “Until recently I never allowed these issues to become public knowledge,” she says, “and I have always tried to keep them from limiting my effectiveness, but for the near future I shall concentrate on recuperation and fulfilling the Master Plan.” Lynn’s doctors in Zurich have hopefully promised that convalescence should bring her another 15 years of life—enough to complete the Global Village.
“I need massive help from our alumni and parents to ensure that we can make this dream into a reality while I am still here. My mother used to say nothing was impossible, but difficult things can take a bit longer!”
Lynn’s exceptional life remains true to the core threads that sustain her: her religious faith, her commitment to TASIS, and her love for her family. “I have tried to build buildings that aren’t just buildings but places of high-quality education and community, based on my family’s view that while times change, true values don’t.”
Lynn saw the potential of the Montagnola campus when she was a child, and herself benefited from it, and that has sustained her involvement to this day, creating a place that will continue to attract and inspire children and families from around the world—and what better legacy than a true Global Village?

THE PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE
The Noblest and Most Beloved:
In Loving Memory of Lyle Rigg

In February, TASIS lost one of its finest. Lyle D. Rigg passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with cancer. Lyle is survived by his beloved wife Sharon Creech, two children, and two grandchildren.
A wonderful educator and an even better human being, Lyle was the longest-serving Headmaster in TASIS history, with 23 years of administrative
experience at TASIS Switzerland and TASIS England. He was, in the words of Chairman of the TASIS Switzerland Board of Directors Lynn Fleming Aeschliman, “one of the noblest and most beloved figures in the history of our schools.”
In the 2017 issue of TASIS Today, faculty and staff shared the top ten things they would miss about having Lyle in Lugano. These seem even more fitting now.
HIS WIT. Lyle enjoys the absurdity and comedy that often arise from common situations, and even more so when the situation involves serious intent and planned decorum. This helps keep Lyle grounded in a healthy realism while he pursues ideal goals. —John Nelson, former Academic Dean
HIS CALM NATURE. Whatever he would do, he was even and steady, impeccably dressed, never impatient or rushed; Lyle is the calm in the midst of the storm. Most of all, Lyle appreciated and supported people, and he reassured his colleagues through the various crises of school life. No wonder he has so many fans! —Bill Eichner, Director of Institutional Advancement
HIS EMPATHY. Lyle always seems to formulate a response that assuages anxieties, inspires confidence, or clarifies problems. What impresses me most are the ways in which empathy and perceptiveness inform Lyle’s
uncanny success in communicating ideas that matter to a human being and to a community. —Dr. Chris Love, English Department Chair
HIS RESPECT FOR THE HANDWRITTEN NOTE. Among the things I admire about Lyle are his attention to detail, his thoughtfulness, and his compassion. A perfectly timed note or hand-chosen card from him is sure to brighten your day. The gesture is small, but the impact great. – Emily McKee, Director of Admissions
HIS WISDOM. We all know Lyle is wise. But what’s really nifty about spending time with Lyle is that one feels wiser afterwards. And, I believe, sometimes, one is. —Alexandra Heumann Wicki ’80, TASIS Board of Directors Vice-Chairman
HIS SPEECHES. I had heard it had been a rough spring of 2015 and that morale was low. I didn’t know what to expect upon arriving. We gathered in the Palmer Center for an All-Faculty meeting in late August. With no real understanding of the strain many had felt the previous spring, I could feel the room swing in Lyle’s favor and understood that he had restored morale in one speech. This would be the first of many brilliant deliveries. – Mark Chevalier, Director of Communications
HIS AFFECTION FOR GEORGE WASHINGTON. For some of us non-Americans, Lyle introduced us to
his “lucky charm,” George Washington. From socks to statues, dollar bills to quotations, even touching the nose of the Washington bust on Lyle’s desk for luck, we will remember it all. And not just because he shared this luck with us by giving his admin team dollar bills as endof-year presents! —Guia Berera, Italian Section Coordinator, and MJ Breton, Middle School Head of Student Affairs
HIS BELIEF
IN THE GOODNESS OF
PEOPLE. Lyle has been a mentor unlike any other. Lyle has taught me compassion, temperance, and perseverance simply by being who he is. He truly believes in the goodness of people and brings that out in everyone he interacts with. —KC McKee, High School Dean of Students
SWALLOWING
TOADS
. On my desks in both Lugano and Durham, I have kept a small ceramic toad—a gift from Lyle and a daily reminder to heed his advice: “Swallow a toad in the morning and nothing worse will happen for the rest of your day.” One of many touchstones Lyle has shared with me, this (both object and idea) nicely illustrates some of the magical paradoxes of Lyle’s leadership.
He is at once humble and inspiring, kind yet courageous, amiable but strong. Lyle has swallowed innumerable toads for all of us, for the schools we love, and for the students we nurture. – Michael Ulku-Steiner, former TASIS Headmaster, Foundation Board
Member, and Head of School at Durham Academy, North Carolina
His commitment to excellence. Lyle set the gold standard for leadership, and he remains the reference point for
administrative decisions: “How would Lyle handle that?” —Bill Eichner, Director of Institutional Advancement
For all of these reasons and many more, we miss you, Lyle.

“"My belief is that fostering a nurturing and supportive environment is pivotal for students' success. "Holly Wiens, MS English teacher and 2023 Khan-Page Master
“You want to challenge the students continuously and encourage them to be curious, have them try to find the answers on their own, and help them become independent and mature human beings.”
“There's a Confucius quote that says, ‘Tell me and I will forget, show me and I may remember; involve me and I will understand.’This permeates everything I do. There's no better teacher than experience.”
Natalie Philpot, Academic Travel Director
Mara Bernasconi, IB CAS Coordinator “The community here is amazing. I really love the teachers and the staff, and everyone is so supportive of one another. But then I also love that you get to know kids. Because it's a boarding school, you get to know them on a deeper level. You get to do outside activities with them, coach them, take them on Academic Travel and service learning trips, see them as a dorm parent, and share a meal with them in the dining hall. So you get to know each student as the whole person—not just the academic side you see in your classroom. Students are so much more than who they are in the classroom.”
Patty Clardy, Global Service Program Director“Cultivating a safe space and having an authentic connection with students are both paramount to encouraging creative practice.”
Chrissie Wild, HS Photography teacher
"When you've been with other students as part of the same project, they become like your family. This is so special to me as opportunities to be a part of something magical like this become very rare in everyday life after school.”
Erika Cramp, Performing Arts Department Chair
“Building passion is really about exposing students to different types of art in order to inspire them.”
Caroline Rossi, ES Art teacher“The approach of our whole department is to make sure students take ownership of the process and feel really empowered. We know there's a lot of anxiety around the process and a lot of unknowns, and we want students to feel excited about the possibilities in front of them. We want them to take charge of their future. And so my philosophy is that it should be a student-led process, and that we are here as college counselors to support and cheer them on and help them be the strongest applicants they can be.”
Johanna Fishbein, Director of College Counseling“I want to try to bring the community together. We are a small village in a way. We call it the bubble at times, and you can be up here and think there is nothing else going on around the world. Students need to know that they’re a part of a community and that we are all here to support each other.”
Tom Lill, Director of Residential Life“I believe in having students physically creating things. For me, I know if someone only talks, I won’t learn. When I experiment and build things, I put the emphasis on me as the learner, and I want my students to feel the same way—as if they are the center of the learning. Being a scientist is about creating something new, so the students have to try. They should understand in their own way, and that takes more than just knowing facts. It requires being creative and ambitious. Education should be full of life and energy.”
Amy Bloodworth, MS/HS Science and Computer Science teacher and 2016 Khan-Page Master Teacher Award recipient
“As an adult, I feel like it is easy to become complacent and g et into a routine where you don’t necessarily learn new things. I did no t want to be like that, and at TASIS I have learned so much from my stu dents about their cultures, their perspectives, and their experiences. T he internationalism at TASIS has pushed me to think about how I app roach literature and how I approach teaching in a new way.”
Carolyn Rosenberger, HS English teacher
"I think my greatest strength is my ability to establish an atmosphere of trust with the students and find a way to bring the best out of them."
Mark Aeschliman, HS Architecture and Art History teacher and 2010 Khan-Page Master Teacher Award recipient
“When students lack a clear model of how scientific trust is assembled and distributed in society, it’s my belief that they become more vulnerable to misinformation, deception, and/or outright propaganda.”
Dr. Brett Merritt, MS Science teacher and 2014 Khan-Page Master Teacher Award recipient
“I would definitely say that what always makes me most excited is when I see students asking ‘Why?’ rather than ‘What?’”
Dr. Chris Love, HS English Department Chair “Students and teachers coming from so many different countries really allows people to come into contact with ideas that they would have never grappled with otherwise, which is great for the arts.”
Matthew Frazier-Smith, Theater teacher
THEY SAID
WHY? THE STORY OF A PHILANTHROPIC JOURNEY
TASIS, OWNED BY A NON-PROFIT FOUNDATION • THERE IS NO STANDING STILL • AND HISTORY WAS MADE • TASIS CAMPUS MASTER PLAN • GLOBAL VILLAGE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
TASIS, OWNED BY A NO "TUITION PROVIDES THE BASE. GENEROSITY PROVIDES
Towards the end of her life, Mrs. Fleming and her family made the decision to bequeath the TASIS Schools to a non-profit Swiss foundation, the TASIS Foundation. It is a remarkable act to give away your life’s work to a non-profit, but because of this noble donation, TASIS is able to continue with Mrs. Fleming’s mission without individuals or entities profiting.
The Foundation is run by a Board that works pro bono and includes a former TASIS
headmaster, educators, financial professionals, and alumni. Many of them knew Mrs. Fleming well and are committed to ensuring the Schools adhere to Mrs. Fleming’s vision for her schools.
The TASIS Schools are truly independent, and thus are not governed by state directives or political considerations. The Board has also established that all TASIS Schools must be financially viable, thus eliminating the need for dependence on fundraising to support the operating budget.

N-PROFIT FOUNDATION PROVIDES PROGRAM AND CAMPUS ENHANCEMENT"

“The beauty of this structure is that donations to the school can be focused on enhancements,” said Bill Eichner, forty-year TASIS veteran and Director of Institutional Advancement.
“We’re not a school looking for an identity. We know who we are and what is possible as we stay true to the strength of our identity. This is very different to for-profit schools and educational groups.”
All funds donated to the nonprofit TASIS Foundation support the TASIS mission and Mrs.
Fleming’s vision. The Global Village Building Campaign, the beneficiary of the Spring Gala, focuses on campus development and completing the ambitious, sustainable, inspiring Campus Master Plan, a tangible commitment to the future of TASIS. Currently, funds are focusing on Collina Alta, which includes the Donald MacDermid Hall and Music Center, Le Pergole classroom building, and the Belvedere Elementary School complex.
THERE’S NO STANDING IT’S EITHER FORWARD
Thanks to Mrs. Fleming’s indomitable spirit in the face of countless obstacles, having the courage to dream big has been woven into the fabric of TASIS since the beginning. Complacency has never been an option at TASIS—“It’s either forward or backwards, there’s no standing still,” Mrs. Fleming famously said—and after staring down the extraordinary challenges of the past few years, we are once again moving forward.
Why is now the time to embark on the most ambitious stage of our Global Village yet? The answer is simple: it’s what our students deserve. The resilience they’ve shown us through these difficult times has been an inspiration. They have never stopped moving forward or looking upward. Alexia Dochnal, our 2022 Valedictorian, had every reason to complain about the manner in which her final three years of high school were compromised by circumstances
beyond her control but instead left TASIS with this parting remark: “Our school’s commitment to truth, goodness, and beauty inspires students to strive toward academic and personal growth and improvement whenever possible, a goal I hope to carry with me forever.”
To carry with me forever. Our alumni have long understood that the value of a TASIS education extends well beyond
STANDING STILL FORWARD OR BACKWARDS
the moment they receive their diploma. The experiences our students have here—the vibrant interactions with firstrate teachers and advisors, the exposure to an unparalleled international community, and the myriad opportunities to serve others—all under the backdrop of a magnificent campus setting do, in fact, leave them changed forever. Nearly 60 years after his graduation, Donald MacDermid ’61—whose name will be affixed to the crown jewel of Collina
Alta—declared, “My love for TASIS hasn’t changed. It opened me up, and I stayed open. It’s always with me because of what it did to me. It changed my life. TASIS has been terribly important to me. It made me larger, in a sense. It made me who I am.”
For the students of yesterday, today, and tomorrow, we remain committed to creating spaces and buildings that inspire and connect our
community. We are determined to finish the Global Village we’ve dreamt about for decades, but we cannot do so alone. If you feel a strong connection to TASIS—if the school helped shape you into who you are today—will you move us forward? Will you look upward and envision what the completion of Collina Alta will mean for the future of TASIS?
AND WAS HISTORY MADE
TASIS would not be the school it is today without the generosity of our alumni and families. We pay special tribute to these donors whose legacies will continue for generations to come as our students become global citizens who will change the world.

THE PALMER CENTER
In midsummer 2005, John E. Palmer was visiting TASIS. Mrs. Fleming, Bill Eichner, and others took John to dinner at Stella di Italia in San Mamete, one of Mrs. Fleming’s favorites. They discussed the Global Village and how the next step was building a theater. Unbeknownst to anyone, John was very sick at the time. When he passed away in 2007, his legacy gift of $2.5 million enabled TASIS to complete the funding for the new theater, which was named in his honor and opened in 2009.
John also made a $500,000 seed funding bequest to create the M. Crist Fleming Endowment for International Understanding, which supports student involvement in international service projects pertaining to refugees, immigration, homelessness, health, education, and environmental sustainability. The Endowment funds the TASIS Speaker Series and Khan-Page Master Teacher Award.
ŞAHENK FINE ARTS CENTER
Business leaders often cite creativity as fundamental to success, and Ferit F. Şahenk
’83 found his creativity thanks to legendary TASIS photography teacher Horst Dürrschmidt. Horst gave Ferit the Photography Award in 1983 for his “exceptional talent, creativity, initiative, and seriousness of purpose.” These qualities, present in a teenage Ferit, can be traced throughout his professional life.
Arguably one of Turkey’s most successful businessmen, Ferit has grown his family company thanks to hard work and an emphasis on positive relationships. He is married to Diane, whom he met at Boston College, and their daughter Defne is a TASIS alumna, Class of 2016. His passion for the arts has become his legacy on the TASIS campus, where, thanks to an incredible donation of $3 million, the Şahenk Arts Center inspires, challenges, and encourages young artists to push their creativity. The Şahenk Arts Center opened in 2012.

THE DONALD MACDERMID MUSIC CENTER AND RESIDENCE
For Donald MacDermid, TASIS was transformational. A shy boy who loved art, history, and literature, Donald fell hard for the cultural riches of Europe and found a deep connection to Mrs. Fleming and her vision. He attended TASIS for three years, finding a sense of independence and love of travel that remained with him throughout his life.
After TASIS, Donald graduated from Middlebury College with a degree in art history before attending the Rhode Island School of Design where he received a BFA. He extended his learning with years of travel and found joy in discovering art through the context of history. In 2019, he gave $3.2 million to fund a major portion of the Donald MacDermid Hall for academics and residence and the Donald MacDermid Music Center, and the remainder of his $1.5 million estate will establish the Donald MacDermid Endowment Fund for the Fine and Performing Arts.
THE GLOBAL SERVICE PROGRAM
The Jan Opsahl Global Service Program (GSP) was envisioned by Jan Opsahl ’68, the first international student at TASIS. He went on to study at Dartmouth College and had a successful business career in the USA and Norway. The GSP was launched in 2013 with a generous donation from Mr. Opsahl and his family of $3 million to set up the Global Service Trust, given in increments of $180,000 annually. This Trust, along with support from the TASIS Foundation, makes cross-cultural, life-changing experiences for our students possible. The program has now sent hundreds of TASIS students on service trips around the world, providing them a unique opportunity to connect across borders through carefully structured experiences. Participation in the program—which is designed to awaken students to humanitarian needs, inspire them to build enduring, mutually beneficial relationships, and lead them toward a life of active citizenship and committed service—is a graduation requirement.

TASIS GLOBAL VILLAGE CAPITAL
TASIS The American School in Switzerland was founded in 1956 by M. Crist Fleming, a leader in international education, and is now the longest-established American boarding school in Europe. The great beauty of its campus has recently been recognized by Architectural Digest magazine in its selection of TASIS as the most beautiful boarding-school in the world. All TASIS schools and programs are based on Mrs. Fleming’s educational principles, which are symbolized in the TASIS crest.

CAMPAIGN DONORS: 2004–2023

CAMPAIGN OVERVIEW
“When we build let us think we build forever” – so says the theme of the (1999 TASIS) yearbook. Those words are symbolic to me, not so much of our school campuses and buildings in Lugano and in England but of the human beings we are trying to build inside those buildings. Building for each student a rich, rewarding, service-to-others life and hoping our students will help build for society a sane world with “liberty and justice for all” – a mammoth task considering the decadence of our present world.
—Mrs. Fleming, in a yearbook message to students in 1999
To complete Collina Alta, total funds needed are CHF 22,000,000 to build the Upper Campus Complex of four buildings.

An internationally acclaimed professional artist with more than 15 years of experience singing in many of the best theaters and festivals around the world, he maintains an active performing schedule in addition to an international voice studio. He is also a vocal coach for various choirs in the local Ticino area.
What draws him to TASIS is the unique learning environment it provides for its students. The students are constantly challenged to learn in the best ways possible, whether it be academically, through physical activity or in the visual and performing arts. Excellence is achievable thanks to the support and dedication of the school, it's wonderful teachers and the incredible parents.

It is truly an honor and a privilege for “Mr. V” to share his knowledge, expertise and life experiences with the talented TASIS students. It is his hope that their minds and souls will be open and free during their exploration of the world of singing, enabling them to understand who they are, who they might want to become and what they are truly capable of.

IN CONVERSATION

Daniela Bonetti is a communications entrepreneur. Twenty-four years ago she founded Akuna Matata, a communication agency specializing in innovative and custom creative strategies. Her experience began through traditional channels, later delving into the digital world and events in a continuous exploration of new media and the latest technologies. Today she works with a portfolio of large international clients, realizing integrated communication projects, corporate events, and luxury experiences.
Akuna Matata has been operating in the communications sector for more than twenty years. During this time, communications has shifted from paper to digital. How did you experience and adapt to this evolution, and what was the biggest change for your agency?
My agency is called Akuna Matata, which means ‘no problem, no worries’. I have always thought that regardless of the means, the end and the project, what matters is to respond to a need and then solve something. So I made problem-solving one of the features that characterized our agency the most, from the very beginning.
Our customers choose us because we are flexible, unafraid of anything, and we never reject new ideas, even those that seem impossible.
Over the years we have seen the evolution of communication, the advent of new communication channels, and innovative languages and modes that have often replaced the previous ones. No
problem. Life is a flow and we go along with it, because every change is a step forward.
Digital communications, and particularly social networks, have changed any previous logic, but we have adapted with creative and cuttingedge solutions for our clients. We believe in communication that does not age, that evolves. For example, while I’m 50, I’m perfectly comfortable with TikTok…! Can creativity be taught? How do you keep creativity fresh?
Creativity is a truly indispensable tool. We should include creativity as a subject in every school, because being creative means not stopping at what exists. It means looking for new breakthroughs to solve a problem and, if there are no breakthroughs, creating a new path. Being creative is a gift and a talent, but that small flame must be fed!
Creativity and imagination have been fundamental resources
to me. I discovered them and began to use them to save myself from my fears and carve out my own world during a rather difficult childhood.
From that moment on, fantasizing has always helped me to find seemingly invisible solutions and overcome hard times. This applies in work and also in the rest of life.
Ten years ago, you decided to expand Akuna Matata to include event planning. How did this come about?
About 10 years ago we won a very ambitious international competition to organize incredible European events for one of the most important toy brands in the world. This expanded our reach as a company far beyond our borders, and soon throughout Europe Akina Matata was known as a creative agency adept at marketing strategies, advertising campaigns, and communication projects. Today we organize numerous events for some of the most important global brands, such as the LVMH Group. This is precisely because we have redefined the approach to events, overcoming any limits through new creative solutions.
The point is to transform every event into a meaningful and emotional experience, allowing the brand to speak for itself through all the senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell.
In recent years the concept of the event has evolved, becoming one of the most complete and effective communication strategies at the B2B and B2C level. What makes the difference for us is to tailor each project, personalizing it through individual, creative details. This is the only way to create an unforgettable experience.
When you began your career, in a sector as competitive and performative as that of communication, what were the expectations, dreams, and goals you had set for yourself?
My story was born from a great passion and a dream that I never abandoned. When I was 10 years old I wanted to do advertising and so it was. Of course, I didn’t imagine that dreaming would really take me so far, and in this I was helped by tenacity. I never gave up and even when I tripped, I immediately got up and looked forward. Today the market is immense, full,
often chaotic and looking for differentiating ideas has become increasingly difficult.
Many times we seem to have already seen and invented everything, but it is precisely there that lies the challenge and the ability to stand out.
My secret is to keep that dream in my hands and be able to count on the work of my great team. Today, Akuna Matata is a small big world, a family of creatives who have distinct skills that together create unique synergies.
How did you hear about TASIS? I learned about TASIS almost by chance, through my partner Wilma Facchinetti.
Right from the start I was excited by the history of the school based on a sense of belonging, creating global citizens, and experiential learning. I don't have children to send to TASIS, but I could be involved with my creative child, Akuna Matata.
We are thrilled to provide resources and creative advice for this important fundraising event and to be a part of the TASIS legacy.

"It has been a pleasure to discover the synergy and creativity of the TPA team. We’ve had a constructive collaboration, where passion and precision will benefit generations to come thanks to an unforgettable Spring Gala!"

A fine and rare 1950s Vacheron & Constantin "Cioccolatone Automatico" ref. 4657.
Vintage watches bear witness to the historical context they are conceived in and their design is a direct expression of the aesthetic tropes recurrent in contemporary art, architecture, fashion and design.
The 1950s were a remarkable period in this sense thanks to the renewed creative flair and enthusiasm brought about by post war reconstruction. Articulate shapes and designs are the stylistic signature of the decade.
This is the golden age of watchmaking: watches are no longer regarded as mere time-measuring devices but as an exercise in technique, aesthetics and form.
The exceptionally rare and fine Vacheron Constantin “Cioccolatone Automatico” reference 4657 from the mid 1950s perfectly embodies the bold new geometric shapes explored in this decade.
The most striking aesthetic feature is certainly the dial - created with the guilloché hand engraving technique - but the mechanics are also extremely remarkable as this fine masterpiece of watchmaking utilises one of the very first automatic movements produced by Vacheron, employing a “bumper” winding mechanism.
Produced in vanishingly low numbers, less than ten are believed to exist, this is one of the rarest models manufactured by Vacheron Constantin and it is offered in exceptionally well preserved condition.
This a possibly unique opportunity for discerning Collectors to acquire a perfect example of this rare and significant reference.

LUCREZIA RODA
“A
GENTLE HEART WILL OPEN A THOUSAND DOORS”
Inspired by the enduring values that have always characterised TASIS, Lucrezia Roda has chosen to dedicate a piece of artwork in support of the TASIS Foundation.
This work is the result of the merging of the campus’s doorways, portals traversed over the years by countless students. These thresholds, crossed by children and exited by adults with profound values, instilled by the founder Mrs. Fleming, including respect, kindness, ethics, and solidarity, remain steadfast in their hearts as they embark on countless new journeys. This piece serves as a testament to the transformative power of education and the enduring impact of TASIS’s values, inviting reflection on the journey

THANK YOU TO THE TASIS PARENT ASSOCIATION!
"THERE IS NO SUCH WORD AS CAN’T IN MY VOCABULARY AND IF YOU USE IT, YOU WON’T WORK FOR ME." – Mrs. Fleming, 2005
Our deepest thanks to the Gala team from TASIS
When Jennifer Hung Zanarini and Prune Clerici approached TASIS about a fundraising gala, we were cautious. Their ideas were bold and ambitious. Is now the time for this? Could we fit it into the calendar? Would we have the people to make it happen?
Mrs. Fleming would have loved our TPA Gala team. Like her, they don’t use the word “can’t”—they flip it to “how”. How can we find sponsorship of the event so the entire night benefits TASIS? How can we create a Gala magazine—the Galazine you are holding now—totalling over three hundred pages, in six weeks? How can we create the most captivating extravaganza ever experienced on the Collina d’Oro?
Here’s how: dedicating countless hours, sharing the TASIS story with potential sponsors, building teams that are working around the clock to complete each step of this project, and inspiring us and each other to stretch ourselves—just as Mrs. Fleming wanted us to do.
The selfless commitment of our Gala team is remarkable. They have stuck strong to their vision.
Their enthusiasm and encouragement has lifted everyone who is involved with this project to work harder and strive for perfection.
We are deeply grateful to our Gala Committee: Jennifer Hung Zanarini, Prune Clerici, Sevim Arslan, Marianne Odfjell, Laura Colombo, Silvia Rossi, Ana Costa Felix, Alessandra Strarnieri, Ana Cristina De Attayde, Andrea Jelinkova, Angie Ghirardelli, Elisa Lorenzi, Emilia Vacco Talamo, Fiona Angelini-Welch, Francesca Kamata, Giulia Maresca, Imren Guvener, Irache Villada, Kristian Katchatourian, Lidja Katchatourian, Lorenza Fiori, Manuela Cerra, Marcello Laniado, Maria Lutsenko, Martina Grattarola, Melany Tekock Mesaric, Muriel Aciman Hassan, Paola Abbondio, Raffaella Viadana-Biondelli, Sabrina Giuliani, Svetlana Birca, Tatiana Christodoulou, Victoria Maksheeva, Valentina Minin,Wilma Facchinetti.
It has been a privilege to put together this Galazine and we look forward to a fabulous Spring Gala!
Make a difference in the world. These are big hopes and dreams, but you have to hope big and dream big to have bigger dreams come true.
- Mrs. Fleming, 1998
