Durham native, author makes a return trip home By Mark Dionne Town Times

When Brendan Wenzel visited the Durham Public Library on the book tour for his just published picture book “They All Saw a Cat,” it was different from other book tour stops. Wenzel grew up in Durham, so the stop was a homecoming for the author and illustrator, who now lives in Brooklyn. “This community has been beyond supportive. Coming back makes me realize how lucky I was to grow up in a place where I had this much support form the larger community,” Wenzel said before his author event on Nov. 14. See Wenzel, A10

The times when my days have lost their sparkle and I’m feeling a bit beaten and bruised, and I talk to a friend who says just the right thing, the thing that puts everything back into place and sets me on my path again. Help comes from other avenues, too, like signs and bumper stickers and songs and something on TV. At these times I have no doubt that I am being looked after.

I meditate every morning, and as soon as I hit the couch he is curled up on my lap, out like a light in a matter of seconds, sprawled out on his back, head tucked in with one paw draped over it. He would like to stay with me like that for days, I’m sure, but at some point I have to tell him that I really must get on with my day, lest I grow barnacles from sitting there so long.

When I finally get the temperature of the water right when I take a shower. This is a biggie. It will be so hot I fear that I have lost several layers of skin, so I turn the knob the tiniest, tiniest bit to the right, and then the water is so cold it takes my breath away. I turn the knob ever so slightly back to the left, and now the water is scorching

but good memories, and I have taken a much-needed break from the fretting and the chewing on this and that. It’s like a magical slide show, highlighting all the wondrous moments of my journey on this planet. And I realize just how many there have been, and how many are yet to come.

TV. I just love TV. I think it’s a genetic thing. My mother loved it, too. Those were the days before you could tape anything, or DVR anything, and many are the times we would be out and about, always mindful of the clock, rushing home to see a favorite show. So it comes naturally for me to park in front of my beloved Samsung every night. I am especially grateful when my favorite

Buckle up — especially during holidays If it seems like driving is getting more and more dangerous, that’s because it is. People routinely tinker with their electronic devices behind the wheel, huge SUVs are zipping about alongside tiny electric cars, and the concept of patience appears to be going the way of the rotary phone. A lot can go wrong on the road, quickly.

Consider this: Two years back, during the Thanksgiving holiday — one of the busiest travel times of the year — a staggering 341 passenger vehicle occupants were killed in crashes nationwide. Fifty percent of those people were not wearing seat belts.

From Nov. 21 through Nov. 28, Connecticut police are participating in the nationwide “Click it or Ticket” campaign, a high-visibility seatbelt enforcement program. Police will be issuing citations to those who are unbuckled.

With the holiday season once again upon us, law enforcement is doing its part to drive home the message that seat belts do, in fact, save lives.

In Connecticut, anyone riding in the front seat of a vehicle, regardless of the occupant’s age, must wear a seat belt. All rear-seat pas-

sengers between 4 and 16 years of age must be restrained by an appropriate safety system. Fines start at a minimum of $92 for a first offense. So, for folks in the “I don’t like wearing a seat belt” camp, now would a good time to rethink that. Speaking to the Record-Journal about the “Click it or Ticket” push, Berlin Deputy Chief John Klett said, simply, “We want everyone to be safe.” According to the Department of Transportation’s National

Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seat belts saved approximately 12,802 lives nationwide in 2014, and statistics show that the use of a seat belt can reduce the risk of serious physical injuries or death in a motor vehicle accident by at least 50 percent. The numbers don’t lie. Please buckle up when traveling to and from holiday gatherings, and always. If one’s personal safety isn’t enough of a reason to use a seat belt, perhaps knowing the police will be watching may do the trick. — Originally published in the Meriden Record-Journal.

opting for the right private insurance to complement Medicare coverage resulting in paying a premium that is too high or having excessive out-of-pocket medical costs. Third, if increased health costs in retirement are not anticipated, people could run out of money or be unable to afford the care they need. Once a person is no longer covered by an employer’s group health plan, dental and vision coverage ceases. In addition, retirees need to pay out of pocket for long term care expenses, hearing aids, cosmetic surgery, acupuncture or other alternative therapies, costs above the Medicare approved rate and medical expenses not covered by co-insurance.

Medicare Part D has a “donut hole.” Once $3,300 in prescription coverage per year is reached, retirees must pay out of pocket until total annual drug costs reach $4,800. The fourth mistake is waiting until one becomes sick or incapacitated to start the planning process. Leppones reviewed how important it is to put one’s wishes in writing, which assures that those wishes are known. In addition, stress on the family is reduced because they know what that person wanted. People should have a will, a living will, health care proxy, etc., and family should know where those documents are stored.

Leppones strongly encouraged anyone interested in retitling their assets (as in giving the house to children) to work with a lawyer. There are many scenarios to consider before doing this. Included on the list are what happens if a child divorces or becomes named in a lawsuit. The final mistake that people make is failing to understand the emotional and mental stress that illness would have on family members. Long term care policies are a means to protect the family from the burden of caring for a loved one. Such coverage also allows one to choose the type and location of care desired. Having long term care will likely prevent or delay the need to do a spend down for Medicaid.

In addition, Medicare does not cover medical care outside of the country. Monthly premiums must also be paid (for example Part B will be $121.80 per month). Medicare deductibles must also be considered including $1,288 per illness for hospitalizations, $166 per year for

How to care for your farm-grown Christmas tree When a Christmas tree is cut, more than half its weight is water. With proper care, you can maintain the quality of your tree. Below are a number of tips on caring for your tree: Displaying trees in water in a traditional reservoir type stand is the most effective way of maintaining their freshness and minimizing needle loss problems. Make a fresh cut to remove about a 1/2-inch thick disk of wood from the base of the trunk before putting the tree in the stand. Make the cut perpendicular to the stem axis. Don’t cut the trunk at an angle, or into a v-shape, which makes it far more dif-

ficult to hold the tree in the stand and also reduces the amount of water available to the tree. Once home, place the tree in water as soon as possible. Most species can go six to eight hours after cutting the trunk and still take up water. Don’t bruise the cut surface or get it dirty. If needed, trees can be temporarily stored for several days in a cool location. Place the freshly cut trunk in a bucket that is kept full of water. To display the trees indoors, use a stand with an adequate water holding capacity for the tree. As a general rule,

stands should provide one quart of water per inch of stem diameter. Devices are available that help maintain a constant water level in the stand.

The temperature of the water used to fill the stand is not important and does not affect water uptake.

prior to placing them on the tree. If worn, replace with a new set. Do not overload electrical circuits. Always turn off the tree lights when leaving the house or when going to bed. Monitor the tree for freshness. After Christmas or if the tree is dry, remove it from the house. Never burn any part of a Christmas tree in a wood stove or fireplace. Tips for selecting the perfect tree Selecting and setting up a Christmas tree is all part of the seasonal fun, but as the centerpiece of holiday decorations for many homes a little extra preparation can help you make the most of your unique display.

Where to buy

Measure the height and width of the space you have available in the room where the tree will be placed. There is nothing worse than bringing a tree indoors only to find it’s too tall. Take a tape measure with you to measure your chosen tree and bring a cord to tie your tree to the car.

Buy your tree early Remember that trees sold on retail lots in urban areas may have come from out of state and may have been exposed to drying winds in transit. They may have been cut weeks earlier. Buy trees early before the best trees have been sold and where trees

Decide on where you will place the tree. Will it be seen from all sides or will some of it be up against a wall? Be sure to choose a spot away from heat sources, such as TVs, fireplaces, radiators and air ducts. Place the tree clear of doors.

Freshness matters Choose a fresh tree. A fresh tree will have a healthy green appearance with few browning needles. Needles should be flexible and not fall off if you run a branch through your hand. Raise the tree a few inches off the ground and drop it on the butt end. Very few green needles should drop off the tree. It is normal for a few inner brown needles to drop off.

A tree that fits Remember to choose a tree that fits where it is to be displayed. For example if the tree is displayed in front of a large window, then all four sides should look as good as possible. If the tree is displayed against a wall, then a tree with three good sides would be okay. A tree with two good sides would work well in a corner. The more perfect a tree, the more expensive it is.

on, I explained to the young couple what they had to do to report the incident to the DEP (before it became the DEEP). I also asked them what they intended to do with the deer they had hit. Many times the drivers of the vehicle involved in hitting a deer are so up set they simply want to get away from the animal.

I field dressed the deer for them after pulling it over the bank so that any passerbys would not see the field dressing and possibly cause an accident. After I field dressed the deer, the husband and I loaded it into the trunk of their car.

A quick phone call allowed us to locate a DEP Conservation Officer in the area and we arranged a meeting to Since I was on my way home make the possession of the from a fruitless deer hunt deer legal. sands of dollars worth of damage to a vehicle as well as injury and even death to the humans involved in such accidents. I can say this with authority because ,over the years of traveling the Northeast, I have witnessed a couple of deer/vehicle incidents firsthand and have also seen the tragic aftermath of such accidents. Most often it is the deer that bears the brunt of the damage, but not always. It is a fact that over 200 human fatalities are recorded each year with a deer being at fault. When it happens on a highway the damage to both the vehicle and deer can be catastrophic. Ask any insurance company and they will tell you the cost of deer/vehicle accidents is in the millions! A couple of incidents, both in New York, come to mind as I write this column. The first one happened about 10 p.m. in the evening on Route 17 in the town of Livingston Manor. We were warned on C.B. ShopShop Locally Locally >> Roberts The vehicle was totaled. Blood and gore was everywhere on the highway and the vehicle. I’m sorry if you find my description of the scene offensive, but hopefully it just might save your life sometime in the future, particularly if you travel rural areas in the dark hours of early morning or the dark hours during the evening when deer are more active, especially this time of the year. In the Livingston Manor incident, three people went to the hospital via ambulance. Deer/vehicle incidents do not always occur during the dark hours. They can also happen in broad daylight, such as with the young couple at the start of this column. While we had our place in New York, I had broken an ankle, so Edna was doing the driving on a backcountry highway. We were on a section bordered by a highway fence on our right, the oncoming traffic on our left and that lane was bordered by a steep cliff. A small doe popped out over the highway fence and I yelled, “DEER!” Somehow, Edna was able to avoid hitting it (she said it was her superior driving skills).

Now, there are those who are against hunting who would like you to believe that deer hunters are responsible for this deer movement. That is nothing more than a bold-

I have seen the buck-chasing-doe scenario many times over while hunting deer in Maine, New York and Connecticut, and it is really an amazing sight when you consider that before the rut begins bucks are almost never seen on the sides of highways. 2985 Whitney Ave, Hamden Mt. Carmel Center Rt. 10 at corner of Rt. 22 Monday–Saturday 10–6 203-281-6043 Year ‘Round Fee-Free Layaways

When in the woods, in a treestand, it is even more amazing. I have had bucks come running right under my stand as they pursue the lady of their choice. A number of times this did not work out well for them. There was a time while bowhunting in my treestands in New York that I watched an eight-point buck chase a doe back and forth for most of an afternoon, but never getting close enough to offer a shot at it. One time in New York, I had already filled my doe tag and

was in my treestand hoping for a chance at putting a tag on a buck. I was in the stand about an hour-and-ahalf in the morning when a doe came bursting into my sight from some underbrush and she was running like the devil himself was after her. She ran right under my treestand and, sure enough, a nice six-point buck was hot on her trail. He made it to the Roberts’ freezer. As I said earlier, the rut or See Roberts, A16

Now, there was a small white car in the oncoming lane and the driver had the choice of hitting us head-on or hitting the deer. Thankfully, he took the deer. The deer went flying over the car, which now had a smashed front end, plus two blown airbags. The driver escaped serious injury. The deer was killed.

This is the time of the year when deer come into the rut (breeding) season and a buck deer has nothing more on its mind than catching and breeding as many receptive does as possible. I often think of it as the buck chasing the doe until SHE catches him. For the hunter, this can be the undoing of the buck as it throws caution to the wind in search of receptive does.

As for the fallacy of hunters being responsible for the deer going across roads in the dark hours, it is illegal to hunt deer prior to a half hour before sunrise and hunting ends at sunset. Got it?

breeding season is responsible for much of the deer movement in the fall. If you see one deer running across the highway, slow down an expect to see more. Quite

often, it is the second or third deer that gets hit as the motorist is watching the first deer that crossed the road. Many times deer/vehicle collisions resemble a hit and run. The deer leaves the

It’s fall, the rut is on and the deer are moving. Drive with caution. Firearms hunting for deer opened Nov. 16 and runs until Dec. 6 on private lands with a two deer limit of one buck and a doe or both antlerless. The State Land Lottery “A” Season also began Nov. 16 and ended Nov. 23.

scene of the accident and the driver believes the deer is alright. Hate to tell you, this but that is not so. More often than not, the deer make it into the woods only to die a slow and painful death after the incident. One has to wonder how many more deer/vehicle incidents there would be if we did not have deer hunting seasons in Connecticut.

The Lottery “B” Season begins Nov. 26 and ends Dec. 6. Both allow for one deer of either sex to be harvested. There is also a No Lottery State Land Hunt (see page 22 of the 2016 CT Hunting and Trapping Guide).

Tips to improve your financial communication health of your relationship: By Jeff Jolly

What makes a couple successful in their financial relationship? Ameriprise Financial surveyed more than 1,500 couples (those married or living together for at least six months) to learn about their money conversations and how they make decisions. The results revealed eight ways you can improve the financial

1. Understand your partner’s money mindset. It’s normal to have differing views and habits about money, but that doesn’t mean you can’t agree on your financial goals. Couples who report being on the same page financially work to understand their partner’s approach to money and keep the lines of communication open. 2. Make finances a priority and don’t give up. Couples who are willing to have the

hard conversations and who work together to find financial harmony will reap the benefits over time. As you might expect, the study found that couples who had been together longer tend to have better communication and are on the same page when it comes to financial matters. 3. Agree on financial goals. It’s tough to pool your money with someone who overspends or who isn’t willing to save for the vacation you’ve always dreamed about. Sharing

financial goals does bring you closer together—or at least it’s one less thing to argue about. To make it easier to save, challenge yourselves to add a timeframe to each goal so you know what you’re working toward first. 4. Assign and accept financial roles and responsibilities. Most couples split up tasks such as paying bills or monitoring investments. Clear responsibilities allow you to hold one another accountable without worrying if the cable

6. Set a spending limit. Spending habits were the leading cause of contention for couples. Consider setting a spending limit to ensure you’re on the same page as your partner regarding large expenditures. On average, couples said a purchase over $400 should trigger a discussion.

8. Enlist a professional to solidify your financial plan. When you need an objective opinion – or a deciding vote – meet with a financial advisor. Together the three of you can create a financial plan that meets your specific needs as a couple.
