MAYOR’S MESSAGE This time of year is all about community, celebration, and giving, and this edition of Live Townsville provides detail on some of the exciting events and opportunities awaiting us. While we look forward to our Christmas events, let’s not forget the importance of high-risk weather preparedness. Stay informed, have a plan, and be prepared for any emergency that might arise. This year, the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal will focus on supporting residents experiencing financial hardship during the festive season due to domestic and family violence. Let’s come together as a community and give generously to help those in need. For the kids, we have an abundance of great activities and programs to keep them occupied during the school break, with plenty of details found inside this edition.
I’m proud to provide updates on several key projects conducted across each division in the city. Finally, I want to wish everybody a safe and prosperous Christmas and New Year. Enjoy!

COMMUNITY SAFETY AUDITS
STRONG TURNOUT FOR SENIORS WEEK
Townsville City Council has successfully completed its first 10 Community Safety Audits, keeping its promise to the Townsville community to continue driving safety initiatives and securing public spaces and community assets.
It was lights, cameras, disco! at this year’s Seniors Luncheon held over two days in August. The annual free event is open to Townsville residents aged 65 and over, and includes a sit-down catered lunch, live entertainment and the annual Seniors Awards. More than 2,300 people attended the disco-themed luncheon this year.
These audits were carried out in key locations across all 10 divisional areas. The effort was a collaborative undertaking, with participation from Council, Queensland Police, the relevant divisional Councillors and key stakeholders from various community groups and sporting clubs.
The Seniors Awards celebrates unsung-heroes over the age of 65. These annual awards are one way Council says thank you to seniors who contribute to our community.
Council underlined the significance of these audits with an online survey run through the Have Your Say Townsville platform open to the public during the audit period.
In that same week, Council held a Seniors Lifestyle Expo, bringing together 80 exhibitors offering products and services to help seniors in our city. Close to 3,000 seniors attended the expo.

All cats and dogs available for adoption are de-sexed, wormed, microchipped and have had their first vaccination. They have also been temperament assessed to ensure they are suitable for re-homing. If you already have a dog, you can bring them along for a meet and greet and remember, if you are renting, you must have approval from your landlord. The Animal Care and Adoption Centre is open by appointment. Appointments can be made by phoning 0457 769 362 to arrange a suitable time to visit. SERVING OUR Community AND GROWING A CITY FOR TOMORROW Council continues to invest in our city’s connectivity, resilience and sustainability. Recently completed projects have delivered significant enhancements to our road and transport networks, smoother pathways and streets, stormwater drainage upgrades, improved bushfire management, and park protection for the safety and enjoyment of our community.
CASTLEMAINE STREET ROAD RENEWAL Funding: TCC, Australian Government Investment: $0.9M Jobs: 30 Status: Completed September 2023 The renewal of kerb and channel, pavement, driveway crossovers, pathway, pedestrian refuge and planter boxes has provided an enhanced road surface and streetscape, improving connectivity and road safety for the community. This project is part of the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
STURT STREET CUTTING STABILISATION CASTLE HILL BUSHFIRE MANAGEMENT PIPELINE Funding: Australian Government Investment: $1.3M Jobs: 5
Funding: TCC Investment: $1.9M Jobs: 15 Status: Completed October 2023 Essential stabilisation works to the rockface are complete, minimising the risk of rock fall and ensuring the community can continue to safely use the carpark, footpath and road.
Staus: In progress The installation of stainless-steel pipes on Castle Hill for bushfire protection and planned burns management ensures best practice in bushfire management, increased resilience of our prized landmark, and enhanced safety of the community. This project is part of the Australian Government’s Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program.
MILL ROAD RECONSTRUCTION Funding: TCC Investment: $1.57M
BOULDER PROTECTION PROGRAM Funding: TCC Investment: $2.07M Jobs: 30 Status: In progress Boulders have recently been installed at Cutheringa Park, Wulguru Park and Greenwood Park for protection from vehicle damage and improved safety for the community. The program will be rolled out at eight parks across Townsville.
Jobs: 30 Status: Completed Stage 1 Roadworks are now complete, including road pavement reconstruction, bitumen sealing, stormwater drainage upgrades and improvements to property access.

SAVING WATER AT HOME Did you know Townsville uses about four times more water per person than most major cities? In the face of changing climate patterns and uncertain wet seasons, it’s our responsibility to create waterwise changes to ensure a sustainable supply of this precious resource.
OUTSIDE More than 70% of total household water in Townsville is used on our lawns and gardens.
HOUSEHOLD
Check the graphs and data on your rates notice to see how much water you use. If renting, take a reading of your water meter on the 14th day of every month.
Use a broom instead of a hose to clean outdoor areas.
Switch off your automatic system when it’s wet.
BATHROOM A dual flush toilet uses 3 litres for a half flush and 6 litres for a full flush - a traditional toilet uses 12 litres per flush!
Water your lawn only twice a week in the dry and never when it’s wet.
Switch to water efficient appliances if possible.
Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. Choose waterwise native plants.
Use a low flow sprinkler.
Check for and repair leaks.
KITCHEN
LAUNDRY Run the washing machine when it’s full.
A modern dishwasher uses between 13 -18 litres per cycle, compared to over 30 litres with an old dishwasher.
Run the dishwasher when it’s full and use the eco setting.
Rinse dishes in a plugged sink instead of under a running tap.
Install a water saving showerhead – it will use 8 litres less per minute!
Take a 4-minute shower to save up to 21,353 litres a year.

Head to the beach this summer! Going down to the beach and sitting on the sand with your friends or family is a simple pleasure for most, and one that many people take for granted.
Our award-winning esplanade, The Strand, is for all to enjoy. This is why our local lifeguards roll out Council’s beach access mats at The Strand main beach every Friday 10.30am until Saturday 3pm. These beach access mats allow wheelchairs, mobility scooters, prams and strollers to access the beach, which would otherwise struggle in the sand. We recognise that creating an accessible city is a key factor for improving the lives of residents and visitors. To locate accessible bathrooms, Changing Places facilities or accessible pathways, use the BrioMetrix Mobility in Townsville map available on Council’s website or scan the QR code below.

2023 CHRISTMAS APPEAL The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal has been helping residents in need for more than 35 years. Locals helping locals.
In 2023, the Appeal is raising funds to help people experiencing financial hardship over the Christmas period due to domestic and family violence. Funds raised will be distributed to selected community organisations that work specifically with victims of domestic and family violence here in Townsville. Family violence is a serious concern right across Australia, and it’s no different in our own backyard. Donations are now open. Every dollar can make a difference. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.
