Sturt Street Cutting Rockface Stabilisation

Funding: TCC

Investment: $1.9M

Status: Completed September 2023

Council completed essential stabilisation works in September 2023 to the Sturt Street Cutting rockface. This will minimise the risk of rock fall from existing escarpments to ensure the community can continue to safely use the carpark, footpath and road. The rockface stabilisation works provides a lasting protection barrier to the Sturt Street Cutting and existing rock face. This will significantly reduce any further impacts from weather events, ensure the safety of commuters, road users and pedestrians and provide a safe, usable carpark, footpath and road for the community.

Ross River Dam to Douglas Water Treatment Plant Pipeline Renewal

Funding: TCC, TMR, QG

Investment: $60M

Council is delivering the new Ross River Dam to Douglas Water Treatment Plant pipeline renewal project, a key water infrastructure asset essential to Townsville’s water supply which provides 85% of the city’s water. The new pipeline will further enhance Townsville’s water security.

This project is part of Council’s investment in water infrastructure and services, continuing our strong focus on water security and ensuring Townsville’s water supply for decades to come to support future development of the city.

Construction is continuing on the 9.5km pipeline, which runs adjacent to Riverway Drive, across the Ross River and through the Mount Stuart Training Area. The new pipeline is approximately 96% complete, with 9.5km of the new 1.29m diameter

Picnic Bay Bypass Water Main

Funding: TCC Investment: $3.2M

Status: Completed January 2024

Construction of a 940 metre long, 375mm diameter potable water main along West Point Road and Yule Street to improve reliability and risk management of the water supply system on Magnetic Island. This project ensures long term water security for the island.

Council is investing to increase the resilience of this crucial asset and enhance Townsville’s water security.

The new Ross River Dam to Douglas WTP Pipeline is planned to be in operation mid-2024.

Ingham Road Water Main Replacement

Funding: TCC

Investment: $6.1M

Status: Completed October 2023

Townsville City Council continued its focus on water security with a record $214.9 million invested in critical water infrastructure projects over the 2022/23 financial year.

As part of this major investment the Ingham Road Water Main replacement took place from 31 March 2023 to 27 October 2023. The underground water network across the city requires scheduled upgrades, including the replacement of the trunk water mains as they reach their maximum operational life span.

The water main replacement ensures the continued supply of essential water services to businesses and residents.

Council continues to service the community with these essential works. Here are just a few of the many works completed across the city in the last two months.

Charters Towers Road and Ross River Road

Funding: TCC

Footpath and renewal works on Carr Street, Brodie Street, Yeatman Street, Townsend Steet and Ross River Road (Charlotte Street to Anne Street).

Chenoweth Road

(Flinders Highway to End)

Funding: TCC

Bitumen re-seal.

Cungulla Foreshore Coastal Recovery Works

Funding: TCC

Re-profiling of sand along identified sections of the foreshore due to erosion. Works completed along the shoreline adjacent Cooldette Street near Big Beach.

Flood Intelligence Augmentation, Various Locations

Funding: TCC, QRA Installation of ground level Tipping Bucket Rain Gauges and mounted LiDAR water level monitoring sensors strategically positioned throughout Townsville.

The Flood Intelligence Augmentation Project aims to enable real time environmental water level monitoring throughout the Townsville region that will provide guidance to Council on resilience to future weather events.

Glenrowan Drive, Oak Valley

Funding: TCC Road resurfacing works.

Old Common Road, Belgian Gardens

Funding: TCC Road resurfacing works.

Horseshoe Bay, Magnetic Island

Funding: TCC Coastal management works.

Pallarenda and Rowes Bay

Foreshore Coastal Recovery Works

Funding: TCC Re-profiling of sand along identified sections of the foreshore due to erosion.

Rehabilitation of Gravity Sewer Mains

Funding: TCC Over 100 sewer gravity mains have been rehabilitated/ relined through these works.

Riverway Lagoon Fencing

Funding: TCC Upper lagoon and lifeguard towers work has recommenced.

Lower lagoon fencing was completed in December 2023.

Round Mountain Road, Pinnacles

Funding: R2R Road resurfacing works.

Pipework Renewals

Funding: TCC

Pipework renewal works at Pump Stations on Mount Low Parkway, Marina Drive, Meila Court, Edgecumbe Court, Toomulla and Reward Court.

Townsville Route Expansion Project

Funding: Translink

21 new bus stop locations have been fully constructed and open for public use in Burdell, Bohle Plains, Shaw and Mt Louisa.

Wave Hill Drive Roadworks (to McArthur Drive)

Funding: TCC, R2R Drainage, kerb and channel, and roadworks.

Wellington Street Depot

Funding: TCC

Main depot area complete. Depot is operational.
