The Knox Memorial Theater stands proudly in the heart of Mount Vernon as both a historic landmark and a vibrant cultural venue. Originally conceived in the wake of World War I, the idea for the building was formalized on August 30, 1919, when the Knox County Commissioners resolved to create a space that would honor the service and sacrifice of the county’s soldiers, sailors, marines, and pioneers. The cornerstone was laid in 1923, and on May 25, 1925, the building was officially dedicated.
From its inception, the Memorial was designed to be more than a monument—it was built to serve the living as well as to honor the past. The Republican News described it as a “dignified and worthy tribute” that would also be “a source of inspiration to future generations.” Over the decades, the building became a cornerstone for public gatherings, performances, and civic events—reflecting Mount Vernon’s enduring appreciation for history, art, and community connection.
A major renovation in 2014 ushered the building into a new era. The addition of an elevator made the entire space accessible for the first time in nearly 90 years, while upgrades to lighting, sound, and restroom facilities brought the venue in line with the expectations of modern audiences. Today, the Knox Memorial Theater continues to thrive as a venue for national and local talent alike— welcoming all who seek inspiration, entertainment, and a deep connection to Mount Vernon’s rich cultural legacy.
