Former Ci A orney Seeks “Write In” Vote for Ci Commission

Tamaris Henagan is an Adrian native, who was born and raised in this community. As an adult, she set out to explore the world and was drawn to return home to her Adrian roots in 2021. Tamaris is a licensed attorney and CEO. She obtained her B.S. in Business Administration and Management from Ohio Dominican University and a Juris Doctor, with a concentration in Criminal Law, from the University of Toledo College of Law. Most notably, she is a mother of nine amazing children and the loving Honey of seven grandchildren. In 2017, Tamaris had the honor of becoming the rst African-American attorney in the history of the City of Adrian. She is the sole practitioner of Henagan & Associates, PLLC., a small downtown law rm recognized by US Congresswoman Debbie Stabenow in October 2018. She specializes in criminal, family, business, regulatory/compliance, and municipal law, and was honored to serve as the City Attorney for the City of Adrian from 2018 to 2021. In addition to her law practice, Tamaris was the Founder and CEO of the U1st Transitional Living Program, which served women in recovery from addiction. She has also served the community as a trustee of the Adrian Public Schools Board of Education and was elected to the Board in 2019. Henagan was also the legal redress chair of the Lenawee County NAACP. In addition to local community service, she is also a member of the Toledo Charter of Zonta International, Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity, and Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity.

As the former City Attorney for the City of Adrian, she is well versed in the city charter, local codes, and municipal laws. Henagan has hands-on experience working with ALL city departments, elected o cials, local businesses, and city residents. However, the BEST quali cation Tamaris has for City Commissioner is life experience growing up as an Adrian native who is vested in this community and the people. She has lived on both sides of the tracks, EAST and WEST, knows the heart of this city and values bringing the people together for the bene t of all.

Henagan sees the critical challenges facing the City of Adrian in the next ve years as:

• Establishing and maintaining ETHICAL City leadership

• Repairing a fractured city government body

• Economic Recovery from COVID-19

• Restoring the beauty of city parks

• Addressing the rapid increase in local crime

Tamaris believes in working to retain and possibly increase the budgets for our Emergency Responders. “Between the long-term e ects of the pandemic and the recent increase in local crime, our police and re departments need to maintain full sta ng levels and long-term employees”, says Henagan. Providing a competitive wage and up-to-date equipment is a big part of setting them up for success to do that.

Are There Different Types of Breast Cancer?

MILLIONS OF WOMEN ARE DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER EVERY YEAR. According to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, more than 2.3 million women across the globe were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020. e BCRF also notes that breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in 140 of 184 countries worldwide. Breast cancer statistics can give the impression that each of the millions of women diagnosed with the disease is ghting the same battle, but breast cancer is something of an umbrella term. In fact, there are various types of breast cancer, including ductal carcinoma in situ, invasive ductal carcinoma, in ammatory breast cancer, and metastatic breast cancer. Learning about each type of breast cancer can help women and their families gain a greater understanding of this disease.

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)

DCIS is a non-invasive cancer that is diagnosed when abnormal cells have been found in the lining of the breast milk duct. e National Breast Cancer Foundation notes that DCIS is a highly treatable cancer. at’s because it hasn’t spread beyond the milk duct into any surrounding breast tissue. e American Cancer Society notes that roughly 20 percent of new breast cancer cases are instances of DCIS.

Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC)

IDC is the most common type of breast cancer. e NBCF reports that between 70 and 80 percent of all breast cancer diagnoses are instances of IDC. An IDC diagnosis means that cancer began growing in the milk ducts but has since spread

into other parts of the breast tissue. is is why IDC is characterized as “invasive.” ough IDC can a ect people, including men, of any age, the ACS notes that the majority of IDC cases are in women age 55 and older.

Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC)

e NBCF describes IBC as an “aggressive and fast growing breast cancer.” Breastcancer.org notes that IBC is rare, as data from the ACS indicates that only about 1 percent of all breast cancers in the United States are in ammatory breast cancers. Many breast cancers begin with the formation of a lump, but Breastcancer.org reports that IBC usually begins with reddening and swelling of the breast, and symptoms can worsen considerably within days or even hours. at underscores the importance of seeking prompt treatment should any symptoms present themselves.

Metastatic breast cancer

Metastatic breast cancer may be referred to as stage IV breast cancer. When a woman is diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, that means the cancer has spread, or metastasized, into other parts of the body. e NBCF indicates that metastatic breast cancer usually spreads to the lungs, liver, bones, or brain. Symptoms of metastatic breast cancer vary depending on where the cancer has spread. For example, if the cancer has spread to the lungs, women may experience a chronic cough or be unable to get a full breath.
