The hotel’s Saturday afternoon teas went pink last month. In honor of breast cancer awareness, it hosted four Pink Ribbon Teas. Net proceeds from the events went to Gateway to Hope, a local organization that supports women battling the disease.

The organization recently held its annual international conference in St. Louis. Recipients of the Trailblazer Award were recognized for their commitment to preventing child abuse and neglect at a ceremony at the Museum at the Gateway Arch.

…committed to recognizing the rich history of art in the city and promoting locally significant estates and institutions…

The recent Oct. 10 St. Louis Collections auction included property from local collections and estates. The sale featured fine art, Meissen porcelain figures, rugs, classic glass, English and Continental furniture and decorative arts, and an extensive collection of sterling silver. The sale’s fine art session was especially successful, with several works selling well above their estimates. Notable lots included To Vuillard-Blue & Yellow by Joyce Kozloff, which realized $21,250 against a $500-$700 estimate; On the Bacino de San Marco - Venice by Franz Auguste Rezia, which sold for $16,250 against a $1,000-$1,500 estimate; and Early Spring by Tadashi Asoma, which hammered at $12,500 against a $2,000-$3,000 estimate. Hindman St. Louis frequently brings significant property to auction. Past highlights include Still Life by Thomas Hart Benton, which sold for $455,000 against a $100,000-$200,000 estimate; Ralston Crawford’s Pennsylvania Barn, which realized $572,500 against a $200,000-$400,000 estimate; and Saul’s Guernica, which set the record for artist Peter Saul at $575,000. The next St. Louis Collections sale will be held in the spring of 2020. The office is always accepting consignments in all categories. FROM THEitor

There are big things happening at Town&Style, and I could not be happier. If this is the first you’re reading of it, I’m talking about the new face that will be leading our publication, one that many of you already know. Karen Kelly is taking the helm as publisher of T&S, and Lauren, our respected founder and relentless cheerleader, will remain involved as president. I will guide you to our full-page feature on Karen on pg. 11 to learn about her impressive career history and vibrant personality; here, I will just tell you that yes, it’s change, but it’s change with loads of energy and ambition behind it—the best kind. It’s funny. I’ve been involved with the same team of dynamic women (and at times, a couple of men) for my entire career in St. Louis, so I believe in our people and our product wholeheartedly. You might think that kind of history would make me a little hesitant to welcome someone ‘new.’ But from the moment I learned Karen’s story and her connection to us, and from the second I heard her shriek with delight when I first met her, any fears I might have had were discarded. This woman is going to do great things, and her already deeply rooted belief and pride in our product will only rub off on all of us in the best way possible. So that’s the news. We will continue to bring you the best stories of local people making a difference, like Dawn Malcolm of the amazing nonprofit Lighting the Path, who is featured on pg. 23; of influencers in their respective genres, like My Messy Mom Life (pg. 13), Tech Talk (pg. 18) and From the Blog of … Scout & Nimble (pg. F26); and of leaders and institutions that are truly the fabric of this city.

FAMILY VALUES ROSSMAN SCHOOL by stephanie wallace

TOWN TALK

WHETHER IT’S WITH FAMILY , co-workers or the community, people succeed

when they come together to support each other. You can see this philosophy put into practice every day at Rossman School. Located in Creve Coeur, the independent elementary school is committed to providing a well-balanced education of both the heart and mind. Students are encouraged to be their best in a nurturing environment filled with supportive teachers, staff and peers. Character education is integral to Rossman’s approach to learning, and its curriculum is built on the core values of kindness, honesty, respect and responsibility. “We create a safe learning environment,” says Rachel Dixon, lower school director. “Students can learn by taking risks and making mistakes because they know they are valued and respected.” A key part of this approach is the school’s family program. Led by a teacher or administrator, each Rossman family consists of one student from every grade, starting with junior kindergarten. The program has been in place for nearly two decades and strengthens connections among the school’s population. By bringing all grade levels together, it provides unique benefits for everyone, according to Dixon. “New students immediately feel connected to the community because their Rossman families make them feel welcome,” she says. “Older students have the opportunity to take on leadership roles and model character values.” The groups meet monthly and complete projects together. In September, they wrote letters to recent graduates, wishing them well and letting them know their Rossman families were thinking of them. They also read books centered around the school’s core values, such as The Empty Pot, a Chinese folk tale about honesty. “Everything connects back to learning together,” Dixon says. “By having discussions across grade levels, students get to experience different perspectives than they would in a

STUDENTS LEARN AND EXPLORE IN ROSSMAN’S DROSTEN GREENHOUSE.

traditional classroom environment.” Even the youngest students can be part of the conversation and take on important roles during projects. Group activities also extend beyond these meetings. Each spring, Rossman hosts a spirit day with special events, including a basketball game where alumni who are current high school seniors get to play with members of their families who are now fifth- and sixth-graders. At the end of the year, there also is a field day. Last year as part of an ongoing sustainability project, families planted native species in the school’s Drosten Greenhouse and learned about pollinators. Plus, there are small, unstructured interactions every day. “Everyone loves spending time together,” Dixon says. “It’s special when I see students stopping to say hello or give a high-five to someone in their Rossman family.” The success of the model is evident. Students learn to respect others, build relationships, take responsibility and make an impact on the world around them. Dixon notes that they also have fun engaging with a cross-age community and supporting members of their families. “I enjoy field day and all of the family gatherings,” says a current sixth-grader. “I feel like a leader because the junior kindergarteners look to me when they are unsure of something. I remember feeling that way, and now, I can guide them.” &

TALK OF THE TOWNS by bill beggs jr.

TOWER GROVE SOUTH 〉〉

Julius B. Anthony is CEO of St. Louis Black Authors of Children’s Literature. That title is quite a mouthful, so let’s refer to it as STLBA. Anthony is in the middle of bringing a very big idea to the metro. A children’s book author himself, he is seeking others who have written books for black children, with text and illustrations designed to make these beginning readers feel like someone understands their unique experiences so they’ll like to read. The initiative is opening eight literacy labs this academic year as part of STLBA’s Believe Project. The labs, in the city, North County and East St. Louis, have created or will create literacy spaces within schools and community centers that serve pre-K through third-grade students. Not surprisingly, bookshelves aren’t full of black children’s lit. It’s no secret that the racial divide in the StL is systemic, persistent and pervasive. (I only remember one black protagonist as a kid. The book’s theme was so patently racist that its title need not be printed here.) All primary school kids coming up in the 1950s and early ’60s read the Dick and Jane books; it was as though only Caucasian youngsters were expected to learn to read, much less want to. “What we’re really dealing with is an opportunity gap,” Anthony says. “Our children have limited experience.” Anthony says the first significant children’s book with young black readers in mind, The Snowy Day, was published in 1963. Progress has been woefully sluggish. Statistics from a literacy organization, he says, show that only 6% of the books published between 2000 and 2016 had black authors and were written with a young black audience in mind. STLBA hopes for about 80% of the books in reading rooms to fit the category. The Believe Project started with a $1,000 grant that Anthony parlayed into one of the most user-friendly websites one could hope to encounter at stlblackauthors.com. The Children’s Clubhouse he developed at Missouri History Museum celebrates its fifth anniversary next June. Meanwhile, a presence on LinkedIn has delivered results that are nothing short of miraculous. The power trio offering support? Scholastic Inc., Nine Network/PBS Kids and ... IKEA. The possibilities? Staggering. Scholastic will create reading spaces, each known as a ‘Reading Oasis,’ complete with area rugs and bean bag chairs; Nine Network is providing coverage of the project on its local shows/ PBS as part of its national ‘Ready To Learn’ programming, and international lifestyle juggernaut IKEA will provide, I dunno, furniture and shelving, maybe? The latter two came late to the table in a rapid series of developments. Anthony surmised Scholastic could deliver enviable distribution— but he kept his powder dry. After a February 2018 meeting with a Scholastic exec at Hartford Coffee, right up the street from his home in Tower Grove South, Anthony at first turned her down. He was uncomfortable with the idea of a major corporation getting cozy with his intellectual property. He was intent on adhering to STLBA’s mission: creating spaces for these kids to get comfortable with books so that not only will their imaginations run wild, but they’ll become competent, confident readers by the end of third grade as well. But the book company’s executive VP assured Anthony he’d have creative control as a third-party vendor. Fast forward: Reading spaces have been created and are being built or will be in select St. Louis area and East St. Louis public schools and community centers. The history museum is behind a clubhouse expansion to the tune of many, many square feet for a permanent Reading Oasis. When the clubhouse opened there in 2015, Anthony et al. planned a ‘Winter Getaway’ for the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, always a dicey proposition in our land of potentially nasty weather. “It was cold that week,” he recalled, expecting maybe 50 youngsters to show. Three hundred came! “Most families who visit the museum are white,” he says. “We had all races, children of color, different socioeconomic groups.” He grins. “The kids wanted to make snow angels.” Anthony remains busy and although his venture is now a 501(c)(3) with a six-member board, he’s had little time to think, much less write his own children’s lit. But the project proceeds apace, as though the universe thinks it’s an idea whose time has come. “There has been just a lot of local goodwill,” he says.

ST. LOUIS 〉〉

Some kids still want to run away and join the circus. Others are content to sit in their rooms and play Red Dead Redemption for hours. But let’s talk about the first group. Kids can become circus performers, but it can be expensive. Some families could use some financial assistance for their kids to flip, fly, fling and flourish! As the Olympics are for many athletes, Cirque de Soleil is, perhaps, the gold standard for performers. One should aim high, of course, but a kid has to start somewhere; he or she must be taught how to juggle or fly through the air with the greatest of ease. Based on personal experience, the former can have you up all night with three tennis balls. Nothing gets busted, usually, and you might not even wake up anybody else. But in order to become a daring young man or woman on the flying trapeze, a vast open space and high ceiling are necessary— that’s where Circus Harmony comes in. Last year, the organization gave more than $32,000 in scholarships via its Flying Children Scholarship Fund. Where on earth did that money come from? Certainly not from the Ringling Bros., Barnum or Bailey. We have to help. Go to the City Museum this Saturday (Nov. 9) for the annual Circus Harmony Juggling Ball, an eclectic evening of dining, dancing, drinks and daring with an awesome auction, marvelous music and exceptional entertainment (like, kids showing off their mad circus skills). And while you needn’t squeeze into a sleek, shiny jumpsuit, sparkles and spangles are encouraged.

CLAYTON 〉〉

As scandal-ridden as our home county seems to be lately, it’s resembling other lamentable government entities, and we’re not talking about the leftthinking or right-leaning swamp in D.C. For an apt comparison, all we have to do is head north to enemy territory: Cook County, Illinois, that is, where there’s a much-maligned baseball team whose name shan’t be uttered. That metropolis and adjacent county—which are similar to the StL, at least geographically speaking—also were home to the violent 1968 Democratic Convention and Depression-era gangsters the likes of Al Capone. The

TOWN TALK

president hasn’t had a kind word for the Windy City, most recently claiming it’s more dangerous than Afghanistan. Heidi Stevens, in her Oct. 29 Chicago Tribune column, could have been referring to the county that envelops our city when she wrote that city officials often seem to be “more interested in boosting their own fortunes than alleviating their constituents’ considerable burdens.” Steve Stenger, disgraced county council chairman, has had his nearly four-year federal prison sentence shrunk to two years and three months. For good behavior, reportedly—plus, an inmate can have a year shaved off if he or she completes a substance-abuse rehab program. Stenger was convicted in May for rewarding campaign donors with county contracts, and John Rallo, one of them, is set for sentencing in December. Several other county employees were involved and took a fall, too. Stenger was fined $250,000 and was ordered to pay $130,000; those are just details. It’s this ‘good behavior’ mishegas that rankles many citizens. Stenger, 47, is in prison for bad behavior. What’s he have to do in there—feel sorry for himself? He’s not doing hard time, making license plates or whatever. Well, completing rehab in this South Dakota minimum-security ‘camp’ nets

365 days off. Did this inmate require treatment? Who knows? Stenger had requested doing his time in Pensacola. Criminy.

LADUE 〉〉

When astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson appeared at Stifel Theatre a few weeks ago, we had to orphan our tickets—a nasty cold intervened. Of course, I was generous enough to share the ailment with my bride. (I mixed Alka-Seltzer for her.) Then, when I ran out to pick up a salad for her from The Woman’s Exchange in Ladue, I stopped dead in my tracks on the way out, incredulous. I’d spied a series of illustrated children’s board books, one titled: Astrophysics for Babies. Since I’m a word person and mostly bewildered by numbers, I took less than 3 minutes to read it, swelled with pride, and bought it. To be honest, it was probably a wiser investment than seeing deGrasse Tyson, no matter how much he may have dumbed it down for the audience at Stifel. Two other titles in the series displayed at the Exchange: Quantum Physics for Babies and Rocket Science for Babies. Even though I’m no brain surgeon,

I bet even I could suss those out, too … along with baby books on general relativity, Newtonian physics, biology, evolution, organic chemistry and many others. When we called, Barnes & Noble had at least the astrophysics volume in stock. Physicist and mathematician Chris Ferrie, Ph.D., cowrote it with astronomer Julia Kregenow, Ph.D. It was published in 2018. Love. It. Theodor Seuss Geisel is rolling over in his grave. (You know, of course, that Dr. Seuss wasn’t a real doctor. Don’t you?) & TT TRIVIA | WHEN DID THE PRESIDENT VISIT THE THIRDLARGEST CITY IN THE COUNTRY? Should I show up to court? Court dates in divorce and family law matters can be stressful. The thought of coming to court can cause stress and anxiety. Many might even be worried about being seen by others they know. They might feel embarrassed if others see them. Others might not want to take the time off work. They’d rather save their vacation and personal days for a more joyous experience. There are many different types of court dates in divorce and family law matters. Apart from trials, there can be pretrial conferences, settlement conferences, motion dates and even temporary hearings. Even when a person has a lawyer, they wonder whether they should show up to court. “Is it necessary for me to appear?” “If I don’t show up, and my lawyer appears for me, does it matter?” “If I’m not needed in court, would I

be wasting my time and my paid time-off by appearing?” These, and other questions like this, are common when facing this situation. The reality is that an individual going through a divorce or family law matter should discuss this with their lawyer. Having this discussion is critical versus not showing up. There might be some situations where the lawyer can show up without their client. But as a general rule, when in doubt, show up to court. Bad things could happen when a party does not show up. This is even more important where a party does not have a lawyer. Showing up to court is something many judges also notice. When a party shows up, it sends a message to many judges that the party cares about their case. It shows that their case is a priority. On the flip end, if a party does not show up to court, it can send the opposite message that this is not a priority to the party. When a judge believes that the

matter is not a priority, this can sometimes lead to a judge having an adverse impression. This can correlate to a potential adverse result. For this reason, most parties should err on the side of showing up to every date. The truth is that the impact of these cases can be long-lasting. A judge should understand that the party has made the case a priority. Even dressing appropriately for court can make a difference with many judges. THE INSIDER A GLIMPSE AT WHAT’S GOING ON AROUND ST. LOUIS AND BEYOND. &

PATTY by patty hannum I LOVE TO SLEEP, but I’m not a great sleeper. I fall

asleep easily but don’t stay asleep. Most mornings around 3:30 a.m., you’ll find me wide-eyed and pondering life. I’ve talked to two different doctors about how to fix this problem, and each provided suggestions. Nothing has worked. In the meantime, I thought I would share ‘My Thoughts in the Middle of the Night.’

by julia m. johnson

▶ Age is little more than a number for Bethesda Gardens resident OPAL OTIS, affectionately known as ‘Opie,’ who RECENTLY CELEBRATED HER 107TH BIRTHDAY. The St. Louis native ran her own beauty shop at age 20, taught dance and once survived a hair-raising trip through the Bermuda Triangle. Her special milestone was marked with a festive party at the Kirkwood independent living community.

• Kale is dead, and I couldn’t be happier. This fake lettuce has always bugged me. I watched as my friends devoured kale salads and every time I tried it, I thought, “I am eating dirt.” And not in the earthy way beets taste, but in the ‘Oops, I wiped my hand on my mouth while gardening and ate a little dirt’ way. I’m happy we all can get back to enjoying a nice head of iceberg lettuce. • If you built a moat and filled it with sharks, alligators and snakes, what would happen? Those are some big predators all in one ecosystem. So of course, I did a little research. Did you know that alligators will eat little sharks? They think they’re just another kind of fish. However, as sharks grow in size, forget about it. Now, if we have pythons hanging around, things get ugly. Apparently, pythons and alligators often square off, and it’s a toss-up for survival. I do not suggest you look at pictures of the remains at 3:30 in the morning. • A woman jumped over the railing at the Bronx Zoo to taunt a lion. She was protected by a moat (I spend lots of time thinking about moats!). What prompts such behavior? Well, I don’t want to read any of her interviews because, to be honest, she seems too damn dumb, but someone needs to nominate her for the Darwin Awards. Never heard of them? They are the tongue-in-cheek awards given to people who ‘significantly improve the gene pool by eliminating themselves from the human race in an obviously stupid way’ (darwinawards.com). A recent headline, ‘Rhino Poacher Killed by Elephant and Eaten by Lions,’ fits the bill as well. • I’ve often talked about our dog Stella, the one who wants me out of the way so she can live happily ever after with my husband. Stella spends most of her day posing so people can comment on how beautiful she is and most of the night giving me the stink eye as she snuggles up to Carey. I always sense she is planning her attack. But Stella would never cause a mess. So I wondered, could a dog kill a person with a weapon? I mean, could their paws be used to operate, say, a gun? I had just about talked myself out of this possibility since we aren’t gun owners, but of course, at 3:45 a.m., who doesn’t want to just double check Google for verification? And wouldn’t you know, dogs have jumped on guns, usually hunting rifles, causing them to discharge. My research indicates no fatalities. • And finally, I spend far too much time in the middle of the night deciding which super power I want. Now, I know there is no Wizard of Oz handing them out, but I have narrowed it down to being the strongest or the smartest. And there you have it, my dear readers, my mind, sadly not on drugs, wide awake in the middle of the night.

Fun Facts:

THE COMFORT, WARMTH AND FAMILIARITY OF GOING HOME, whether as a kid at camp, a college student or a grown adult, create a memorable experience time and time again. Well, those good vibes are happening at Town&Style because we’re having our own homecoming of sorts. We are thrilled to introduce our new publisher, Karen Kelly, a recognizable face to many in town. After spending years up and down the radio dial of St. Louis, most recently as general sales manager for KMOX, she is returning to an industry where she got her roots. This time, she has years of experience, a solid foundation of connections and countless goals that will drive T&S into the next decade. When you first meet Karen, her energy is evident. Her smile is kind, her words are real and her passion—it’s downright intoxicating. She has a background that fits our mold perfectly: 100% local. Raised in south St. Louis, she attended the former St. Elizabeth Academy on Arsenal for her formative high school years. In fact, she credits the all-female environment for her confidence and realization that yes, girls do run the world! It’s this confidence, paired with a strong work ethic, that got her through college at the University of Missouri and into her first role as promotions intern at KSD. She quickly was asked to produce and co-host a popular radio show for the station (and subsequent others) and was a constant in the male-dominated world of local radio for the last 25 years. And that’s what brings us to Karen 2.0, as she calls it. A good friend of T&S founder Lauren Rechan, who still will be involved and present at the publication as president, Karen’s title here actually has been years in the making. Now, the timing is right. “It is so exciting to be around good people and good energy,” Karen says. “This is where I’m supposed to be.” Explain to our readers how this next step at T&S came about. Why now? I worked for Lauren’s mom, Charlene Bry, way back when, and Lauren (I call her Laurie) has been on my journey with me for quite some time. When this idea came up, I had just made the jump to KMOX, which was the best thing for my career at the time. But it was always a ‘What if?’ between us. Recently, I just kept feeling like there was something else I was supposed to be doing. I wanted a voice again. I’m constantly out there, building relationships and making connections, and I have so many great stories to tell. I also wanted to be part of a hardcore female team that was changing the dynamics of St. Louis—so finally I was just like, this is it. This is everything I’ve been wanting to do. I love this city so much, and what better way to share that than through the greatest local lifestyle publication? What is motivating about working with a female-owned publication and working among all women? The energy, the diversity of ideas and opinions even though we’re all female, the common thread of our backgrounds, the can-do attitude, the support.

back to safe and happy and where a lot of people know your name.

Town&Style has laid down some great roots going into its 10th year of publication. What is your vision for the next 10? We are the lifestyle publication of St. Louis. We already are telling the stories that matter, and I just want to keep putting real things out there. We’re a beautiful publication that covers amazing events, but we’re also writing about what people are really going through. I want everyone to say, “Did you see that in Town&Style?”

AFTER WORK, I TYPICALLY … take a spin class, go for a run and either go to a St. Louis event or dine at one of my favorite restaurants.

You say everyone has a story. How are you going to bring that to your role here? It’s continuing to be out and about and accessible. If there is a story to tell, let us know. We’re there, we’re listening. If it’s happening or a happening, we’ll be there. You will know me, you will talk to me, you will be heard.

MY MOTTO as I take T&S into a new decade: “Wake up, kick ass, be kind, repeat.”

And what about your story has prepared you for this role? Since I was on the speech team in sixth grade, I have wanted to have a voice. Everything I’ve done until now has been a training ground for me to take what I love from all of the media I’ve worked with and the city I’ve lived in and help Town&Style move forward and remain the go-to publication for our readers.

THE HONEST TRUTH EXPERT COACHING ADVICE FROM...

THANKSGIVING & COLLEGE CONUNDRUMS ▶ My sister-in-law is a terrible cook and insists on hosting Thanksgiving every few years. She’s an emotional wreck by the time the food is served, it’s barely edible and everyone dreads it. Solutions to preserve family harmony? jill: I’d suggest a good old fashioned potluck. (If the family is too posh for potlucking, have it catered.) Offer to sit down and plan it all out with your sister-in-law. Sometimes disorganized people like hosting, but they’re bad at details. If she insists on cooking, snack ahead of time and be patient if the wheels fall off the bus. Pizza delivery when you get home is always an option.

jill farmer & beth chesterton

beth: Holidays are fraught with opportunities for disappointment. In your situation, either you will be disappointed by your sister-inlaw’s food or she’ll be disappointed to learn she’s a horrible cook. I like Jill’s idea. Ordering some food can take the pressure off of everyone and bring the focus back to spending time together— which is the most important part of Thanksgiving.

▶ Our oldest is in the thick of the college search. It’s so stressful! Sometimes it seems like everyone has lost their minds in this process. How do we stay sane with all of the pressure? jill: I’ve been through this twice in the last five years, and I say with full confidence that everyone needs to chill the hell out. The pressure on our kids is out of control. One good thing about the admissions cheating scandal? It spotlighted the insanity that’s infected the process. Parents get way too hung up on bragging rights. Elite colleges convince everyone to apply and then reject most just to improve their selectivity rankings. Ask yourself, “Can my child be incredibly comfortable in her own skin at this school?” That’s the best measure of whether your student will thrive in college. beth: Colleges have raised the admissions stakes and stress

levels about as quickly as they’ve raised tuition. How to stay sane? For self-motivated students: Help them understand the process is not personal and they’ll succeed wherever they go to college (hard work and grit do pay off). For less motivated or procrastinating students: Make sure they have good resources in place. Then, you won’t have to be a nag. For all students, identify and celebrate a realistic back-up plan. Finally, be the parent who believes it will all work out in the end. Your calm demeanor can help your child—and others—enjoy senior year.

THE PATH

BY STEPHANIE WALLACE e’re all very familiar with the old adage about teaching a man to fish. No matter how many times you’ve heard it, the message is still a powerful one. Knowledge is one of the greatest gifts we can give to those needing assistance, and that’s the idea behind Lighting the Path. The St. Louis-based nonprofit works to create sustainable solutions to enrich the lives of those living in poverty. It pairs education with skills and business training to empower marginalized populations at home and abroad. Lighting the Path was founded by Dawn Malcolm. After helping at a missionary conference in the west African country of Burkina Faso, she was given the chance to visit a local village. “I was amazed at how happy and welcoming the people were, but I could see that they needed help,” she says. At first, she wasn’t sure what she could do, but during a return visit, inspiration hit while helping women weave mats. She realized she could use her business experience to help the community support itself. “There are many organizations that do a fabulous job bringing food and health care to disadvantaged regions,” Malcolm says. “I knew I needed to do something different, and that’s where the empowerment piece came in. The idea is that once they could make something to sell, it could turn

into a sustainable source of income.” The nonprofit started with teaching girls in an orphanage how to sew, and it quickly introduced other skills like cooking and weaving.

When we help people help themselves, we improve our region as a whole ... Malcolm wanted to use Lighting the Path to help people in St. Louis as well, so the nonprofit offers sewing lessons and classes about starting a small business to help local refugees, immigrants and other underserved groups. She says sewing

is a skill that is in high demand since the local fashion industry is being revitalized. Currently, she is working on expanding the organization by finding a dedicated building to hold classes. “When we help people help themselves, we improve our region as a whole,” she notes. “Our goal is to benefit people from all walks of life and elevate society into a better, more peaceful coexistence.” In 2016, Malcolm received the Hero Award from the One Billion Acts of Peace campaign, a global movement led by 14 Nobel Peace Prize laureates. “It was such an honor and very humbling,” she says. “It’s one of those things that validates what you are doing as something good and positive. My purpose is to empower people. It’s not a handout, but a hand up.”

STUDENT STANDOUTS by julia m. johnson

ADDIE BITTING, LADUE HORTON WATKINS HIGH SCHOOL 〉〉 THE JUNIOR FIRST TOOK TO THE LACROSSE FIELD A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, and it wasn’t long before the fast-paced sport got into her blood. “My friends were playing it, and my parents thought it would be good for me to try a spring sport,” Addie says. “I started playing and got really interested.” She’s had considerable success in a short time and now plays indoor (box) lacrosse as well as field lacrosse. Addie suits up for club teams, including St. Louis 410 West, which has a fall outdoor season. Recently, she played box lacrosse with the Denver Pride Midget Squad, and the team won a gold medal at the USBOXLA National Championship Tournament in California. Competitions keep the Ladue native on the road, but she still is involved off the field. She works on her high school yearbook and is involved with the nonprofit Fellowship of Christian Athletes. How is box lacrosse different? Box lacrosse is played indoors, it has some different rules, the sticks are different, and the nets are smaller. It’s also physically rougher because you make more contact with other players. I like it a lot—it’s really fun.

What are your plans after high school? I’m not sure yet what I want to study in college, but I am interested in sports business and marketing. I have verbally committed to the University of Indianapolis on a lacrosse scholarship.

How have sports been positive for you? They have helped me with my speed and physical strength. I work out at Athletic Republic four or five times a week when Are you involved in other sports? I played basketball and tennis when I was I’m in town, and that helps me stay active. younger, and I still play tennis and golf for fun Sports also have taught me helpful time sometimes. But I’m pretty busy these days, so management skills, and my coaches have been great mentors. They have encouraged me to there isn’t a lot of time for anything extra. keep doing my best and have helped me look for colleges with good athletic programs.

Is it tough to manage your time between athletics and school? When you are involved in sports, you have to learn how to balance your time. And it’s hard to join a lot of clubs because most of them meet when I have practice. But I don’t have any trouble studying when I’m on the road. I spend a lot of time reading in airports!

Why is lacrosse a good fit for you? I like the speed of it. People say it’s the fastest game on two feet, and it really is. There’s never a moment when you are just standing on the field; you’re always active. I also like that there is more scoring than other sports—you don’t have games with scores like 1-0. It doesn’t take long to start putting points on the board, and I think that’s exciting.

Bring Thanksgiving Charm to Your Table

We recently purchased a new dishwasher, and when my husband told me it was a 'smart' model, I was thrilled. Did that mean it could load and unload by itself? Would it automatically start when it detected there were enough dishes? Could it tell me if the dishes inside were clean or dirty? Unfortunately, it can’t do any of those things, but for those who love gadgets, a smart appliance is high on their wish list.

automatically reorder pods when needed. Smart refrigerators can create a grocery list, and you can control their thermostats remotely. These are only a few examples of what your appliances can do. As with everything else, though, there are risks.

According to Wikipedia, in 2000, LG was the first company to sell an appliance (a refrigerator) that connected to the Internet. Nineteen years later, thousands of appliances have this ability, but most people really don’t understand how they work—nor do they understand the risk.

▶ Give your router and Wi-Fi device a unique, personal name. If they are still called TP-Link or ATTxxx, then you should rename them.

So, how do they work? Smart appliances have sensors or tiny devices that collect data to share with another computer or device. To communicate, the sensors connect to a network, typically the Internet through Wi-Fi. You can access the data collected from your appliance via a website or an app on your phone. There are so many things people love about having a smart home. A friend of mine has a smart toaster, and she was telling me all of the cool designs she can create on her toast. If you sync your dishwasher to your Amazon account, it will keep track of how many times you run it and

If you are connecting smart appliances to your home's Internet, do the following to keep your network and device secure:

▶ If you are still using the password and network username from installation, change them to something unique and not used anywhere else. ▶ Do not connect your appliance if you aren't going to use the technology. You'll eliminate the risk of a hacker using it to send malicious emails or attacks on other computers. ▶ Don’t rely on the device's default security settings. They generally are set to share more than you might want. As someone who loves new gadgets and how technology is used in our everyday lives, I still am concerned about the security of these appliances. Do your research, and find out what you are comfortable with!

TOWN TALK

MY MESSY M M LIFE

WITH KATELYN & THE #CRUMBLYCREW

TIS THE SEASON FOR A MILLION AND ONE HOLIDAY PARTIES. Are you ready? More importantly, is your closet ready? Gearing up for back-to-back events can be a challenge even for the most seasoned fashionista. Insert in-store personal shoppers aka ‘the elves of style.’ Forget what you’ve heard (or thought) about them. They don’t force you to buy things you hate, you don’t have to spend a certain amount, and they don’t cost extra money. Everyone can work with a personal shopper, even on a budget. They actually may help you make choices that end up saving you money. Plus, you get the utmost care and attention as they learn your style and needs. I have some insider perspective on this because both of my sisters are personal shoppers. They weighed in on some really great tips for using a little help to get glam this holiday season.

Go with specifics in mind. Do you need one outfit for an event or pieces to mix? Do you need dressy tops, or have you been desperately searching for the perfect pair of jeans? Are you looking for someone to tell you the type of fits that are most flattering? Do you need help with color? Personal shoppers are experts on all of these things! You may even have a Pinterest board of the look you have been dreaming of achieving … bring it in. This will help them zero in on the perfect items for you.

▶ Mention your pain points. I mean this on every level.

If certain colors or fabrics scare you, if you don't love the way clothes normally fit or if you feel insecure about an area, mention it to your stylist! Also tell them what you currently don't love about your closet. They can solve all of these problems.

Give a budget upfront. As I said earlier, you don’t have to spend a ton of money to qualify to work with someone in a store. They are excited to build a lasting relationship with you so you come back. Just mention what you want to spend so they can show you appropriate options.

You can work with a personal shopper/stylist virtually. Your stylist can pin things for you to approve or disapprove before a session. They also can work with you via Facetime or text pictures if you have no time to stop in. Remember that things can be shipped to you and returned if they don't work.

It goes beyond clothes. After a session, my sisters often take clients down for makeup assistance to ensure they find the right palette to make them look even better in their new clothes. This is a perk of department stores. You just might need new eyeshadow to make that purple dress pop!

Get it tailored to perfection. The majority of large stores offer in-house tailoring. You can buy the most fabulous dress on the rack, but if it doesn't fit right, who cares? Most personal shoppers will help you find the right undergarments and will call up a tailor to nip and tuck if necessary. If you are looking to follow more personal shoppers outside of department stores, check out these accounts: @ahstyling, @lauraksawyier, @meganlperry, @mindfulcloset.

tropical halloween Succulents are native to L.A., so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that planters of unlikely pairings, succulents and pumpkins, are all the rage this season. It’s a fun alternative to the traditional jack-o’-lantern and will last well into fall. I particularly love the look of a white pumpkin with cascading succulents flowing down the side. They’re easy to make at home and add unexpected punch to your seasonal decor.

knit wit Knit sets are having a moment. The perfect marriage of comfort and style, they are becoming the outfit du jour here in La La Land. Lounge around the house or wear them on your next date night. Sets designed by the likes of LPA and Who What Wear are anything but frumpy and easily transition from day to night.

up, up and away For as much traveling as I’ve done, I really never gave much thought to my luggage or how it looked and performed—until my most recent pieces began to fall apart. I decided it was time to make an investment. As a millennial, I turned to Instagram for research and discovered Away, a modern luggage retailer that offers the luxury of a lifetime warranty without the luxury price tag. After purchasing my own Away luggage at its L.A. brick and mortar, it wasn’t long before I started noticing the brand’s flagship hardshell luggage rolling around airports across the country. Not only are Away products aesthetically pleasing, but their seemingly indestructible exterior makes me feel like James Bond.

cannabis cafe The nation’s first cannabis restaurant, Lowell Cafe, has taken Los Angeles (and the media) by storm. Lowell is the first cannabis company to open a consumption lounge and restaurant all under the same roof. Pairing food with cannabis strains rather than alcohol, Lowell is destigmatizing cannabis one patron and news story at a time. Not to mention, the interior of the restaurant is absolutely gorgeous—think L.A. rooftop scene meets rustic chic in this revolutionary restaurant’s indoor/outdoor design.

a hollywood ‘gym’ Before Equinox and ‘celebrity’ gyms dominated L.A., working out focused on fitness rather than fame. Enter Easton Gym in West Hollywood. Established in 1937, it has remained a low-key gym that prides itself on its unassuming, friendly vibe. The retro, brick-lined space with original hardwood floors is a far cry from today’s sterile, almost intimidating gyms. The equipment is state of the art while the vintage walls offer a sense of humility and history—which is hard to come by in L.A. Still, there are rumors of celebrity members that frequent the gym. It is West Hollywood, after all.

AT THE TOP THE GATESWORTH by stephanie wallace RESIDENTS CELIA AND DR. SALVATORE SUTERA

IT’S BEEN SAID THINGS GET BETTER WITH AGE, and at The Gatesworth, that applies to the entire retirement community. The staff, programs and living spaces are constantly evolving to better suit residents’ needs and lifestyles. For more than 30 years, The Gatesworth has delivered innovative services and luxury amenities to ensure that seniors stay active, happy and comfortable. Executive director Carrie Montrey has been at the community for 17 years. She began as assistant director in resident services and has worn many hats since, from running the fitness center to working with security. “I initially was attracted to the opportunity because of the people, and now, they continue to motivate me to do my best,” she notes. “Everyone who works here is so gracious and kind. It’s a really wonderful environment.” For Montrey, no two days at The Gatesworth are the same, and she enjoys the variety. “I work with different managers, and I talk with residents and their families on a daily basis,” she says. “I’m always brainstorming and looking for new ideas to improve things.” The most rewarding part of her job is being able to work directly with people, listening and resolving any concerns. She especially enjoys hosting special events like celebratory breakfasts or monthly birthday lunches. “It’s a great opportunity for everyone to learn about each other,” she notes. Along with spending time with residents, Montrey loves how much positive feedback she hears. “Residents and their families always are popping into my office to share something nice or compliment the staff,” she says. “Everyone who works here truly helps set The Gatesworth apart from other retirement communities. We

have a strong commitment to quality and strive to maintain an exceptional level of service.” With one of the highest staff-to-resident ratios in the nation, the community provides an unparalleled experience, and requests can be answered quickly. The success of The Gatesworth’s dedication is evident in the satisfaction of those who call it home. Along with being able to socialize with one another, Montrey says residents most enjoy the variety of activities and programs offered, including discussion groups, live entertainment, card games, spa services and fitness classes. And the schedule often changes to suit people’s interests or needs. For example, the fitness program began offering step and men’s weight classes after residents inquired about them. “It takes a lot to operate something this large with such a high level of service,” Montrey notes. “Credit definitely goes to the managers and employees who deliver all of our services to residents.” Celia Sutera and her husband, Salvatore, have been part of the community for six years. She says a big incentive to choose The Gatesworth was the social interaction available. “People we knew already lived here, and we’ve made a lot of new friends,” she says. “We are very happy to be here.” Sutera also enjoys all of the activities. Her favorites include going to the fitness center, enjoying live music on Friday and Saturday nights, and attending Questers, a political lecture series led by Terry Jones, professor emeritus of political science at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. “The staff is wonderful and very accommodating of whatever we might need,” she adds. “It’s just a neat place.” &

BEEF JERKY ▶ $6.95

A plateful of sticky, crispy flank steak strips covered in sesame seeds and flavored with kochujang (Korean chili paste) is just the right balance of sweet and spicy. The big appeal comes from the meaty texture.

HAN LAO first impression » This is a locally owned, unique Asian spot set amid the

commotion of Hanley Road’s big box stores and chain restaurants. The food is primarily Laotian dishes, which have both similarities and differences when compared to other Asian fare around town. Inside, the place is casual, but on the nicer side, with booths and long communal tables. There is a full bar with specialty drinks, wine and beer. A word of caution about the food: It is much spicier than typical Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine we’re used to.

wash it down:

For a place this casual, the bar menu is impressive. My Lychee Buddha ($9) was well conceived, well executed and not nearly as sweet as it sounds. Cognac and peach liqueur were mixed with lychee juice for an exotic cocktail that tasted terrific. In addition to cocktails, you can opt for Sapporo, Ichiban, Singha and other brews that go well with this cuisine. Plus, there’s a full range of bubble teas.

STICKY RIBS ▶ $9 These could have been an entire meal. The four large bones had a sticky sauce on top that provided the promised crustiness, and while they had a little bit of fat, they were overall surprisingly lean and pungent with a sugar coating and a hint of five-spice powder. SHRIMP FRIED RICE ▶ $11.95 This was probably my favorite dish. Every grain was coated with the lightest layer of oil, and there was plenty of egg. The pickled greens on top were a unique touch; they tempered the oil and added a pop of vinegar. TOM YUM GOONG (hot and sour soup) ▶ $5.95

Fiery red with chile peppers, the dish is a good example of how this cuisine draws you in with its exotic flavors but also shocks you with its heat. It in no way resembles its Chinese counterpart. The soup is a mouth-puckering recipe thanks to lime and bitter cilantro, and the slivered red onion, shrimp and button mushrooms barely cut the heat.

THUM MUK HUONG ▶ $6.95

Another spicy dish, this one cold, the green papaya salad has shredded cabbage, fruit and vegetables that you stuff into iceberg lettuce for a tasty wrap.

SHRIMP RED CURRY ▶ $10.95 The milder dish leans more toward Thai cuisine with coconut milk, bamboo shoots and baby corn. Spoon the creamy curry over rice, and the kick is barely noticeable. KHAO PIAK SEN ▶ $8.95

Chicken broth is teeming with house-made rice noodles and shredded white-meat chicken. The noodles were too thick and dominating for my taste. Additionally, the defining flavor was ‘fried garlic,’ which yields a burnt and bitter element—an acquired taste.

overall » Adventurous diners will love the variety of flavors and

ingredients here. It’s like an exploratorium for foodies. Plus, prices are reasonable and service is efficient. For those with more sedate dining habits, just be sure to inquire about the dishes and order them mild.

Khao Poon: Red curry and coconut pork broth with vermicelli noodles, ground pork, bamboo, bean sprouts, fresh herbs, red onions and cabbage

THE PLAY Bidding Commentary: West’s two-♦ bid was a weak jump overcall. This bid can be compared to a weak-two opening. When North doubles (Negative), South can expect four/four in the majors and at least eight high-card points. South’s two-♠ re-bid shows a minimum. With an opening bid, North jumps to four ♠s.

1. West cashes three rounds of ♦s, East discarding ♣s. 2. West switches to the ♣ 10, taken in Dummy by the King. 3. Declarer wins the ♣ and clears trump—two with West

and three with East.

4. Declarer needs to count the other suits, playing the

opponent with the greater ♥ length for the Queen.

5. West is known to have started with six ♦s and two ♠s. 6. After West follows to three rounds of ♣s,

the count is complete.

7. West started with two ♥s and East with four.

East is twice as likely to hold the Queen.

8. Go with the odds and play East for the Queen. NOTE: Avoid playing two-way suits (suits where a finesse can be taken in either direction) for as long as possible. Try to get a count on the other suits first.

TIP OF THE DAY It seems like good players always find the Queens. Is there a secret to finding Her Majesty? Actually there is: counting. Exact or inferential counts make it much simpler to find cards needed to make one’s contract.

Nearly all premature infants receive antibiotics to prevent deadly bacterial infections, but researchers at WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE have found that the drugs can have a long-lasting negative impact on the developing microbial communities in the intestinal tracts of infants. Published in Nature Microbiology, the study looked at 58 babies, 41 of whom were born prematurely. The microbiomes of those who had been treated heavily with antibiotics contained more bacteria associated with disease, more that are resistant to antibiotics and fewer species linked to good health.

JEFFREY SCHERRER, PH.D., a professor of family and community medicine at SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY, has found a link between treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and decreased incidence of type 2 diabetes. In a study published in JAMA Psychiatry, it was found that veterans who experienced a greater reduction in PTSD symptoms had a 49% lower risk of developing diabetes over a three- to six-year follow-up period. Scherrer says more study is needed and could determine if improved PTSD conditions are associated with better insulin resistance and reduced inflammation.

Congratulations are in order for DR. MICHAEL HOLTZMAN, director of the Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine at WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE. He has received awards totaling $7.5 million to support research into new therapies for severe respiratory diseases and related conditions. Holtzman’s lab is working on drugs to better help patients suffering from conditions like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and related cancers. The new approach targets a distinct type of stem cell in the lining of the airway that becomes reprogrammed to inappropriately drive airway inflammation and mucus production.

New research at SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY’s Trudy Busch Valentine School of Nursing will study how to best communicate with parents of children with terminal cancer. Many health professionals wait until treatment has failed to bring up palliative or hospice care, causing more emotional distress. The five-year study will see if end-of-life supportive care discussions at the time of diagnosis will improve quality of life for both parents and their children. The research is funded by a National Institutes of Health RO1 grant and will include 166 families from six states.

AFTER BODY-ALTERING EVENTS like pregnancy and weight loss, adults often end up with sagging abdominal skin and belly fat deposits that won’t go away. It’s a frustrating issue, but it can be addressed with the help of a knowledgeable physician, says Dr. Terry Myckatyn of West County Plastic Surgeons of Washington University. He and his colleague, Dr. Marissa Tenenbaum, understand that each patient needs a personalized solution to the problem. Doctors can customize abdominoplasty surgery (commonly known as a tummy tuck) to remove excess skin and fat, tighten lax abdominal muscles and restore a more pleasing appearance. In women who have been pregnant, the procedure also can help remove stretch marks. Myckatyn says the different types of abdominoplasty range from a ‘mini’ procedure with a 6- to 8-inch incision to a lower body lift with an incision around the entire abdomen. “The patient’s body type and the amount of tissue that needs to be removed determine which surgery we do,” he says. “Doctors work closely with each patient to decide what is best. We meet a couple of times before surgery to answer questions, discuss expectations and explain what the procedure involves.” Another important reason for pre-surgery consultation is to correct any misconceptions the patient may have. For example, some people mistakenly think of abdominoplasty as a weight loss solution, Myckatyn says. “Managing patients’ expectations before the procedure is very important to their satisfaction afterward,” he notes. “The purpose of this technique is to contour the body, not reduce weight.” After surgery, the patient typically stays overnight in the hospital and goes home the next day. Medical staff gives instructions on how to take care of the site for proper healing. “Often, patients are up and walking the day of surgery,” Myckatyn says. “We advise them on gradual exercises they can do at home to feel better, get moving and take an active role in their recovery.” Modern abdominoplasty procedures offer significant improvements compared to earlier ones. They are less invasive, can be done without installing drains in the skin, and require less pain management afterward. “We use progressive tension sutures that prevent fluid from building up, and improved scar therapy supports the surgical site and lets healing occur as the stitches dissolve,” Myckatyn explains. “This helps minimize scar tissue and improves appearance.” He says his practice is committed to expert, compassionate care and follow-up to ensure that patients heal well and are happy with their results. He also advises men and women to be especially thorough when deciding on a surgeon. “If you go to a doctor who only offers one type of abdominoplasty, that can be a red flag,” he notes. “Look for a provider who is board certified in plastic surgery and offers a range of experience and surgical options, which is especially helpful if you need specialized surgery. We believe care and RE JU VE NATI ON treatment should be personalized to each individual’s needs.” & SPEC IAL SECT ION

HEALTH

SEASONAL SKIN CARE BY JULIA M. JOHNSON

This time of year, heating systems don’t just chase moisture from the air, they also steal it from your skin. Then you step outside, where chilly winds and dipping temperatures sap its freshness and elasticity even further. Health experts say autumn is a good time to think about facial rejuvenation treatments and good habits that can put the spring back in your skin.

DID YOU KNOW?

Water is the best beverage for skin and body hydration. Avoid drinks with caffeine and sugar, which have a dehydrating effect.

SKIN SOLUTIONS

“As soon as the changing leaves make everything look beautiful outdoors, dry air starts to have the opposite effect on your skin,” says Carol Anderson, RN, CANS, owner of Nouveau, A Boutique Medspa. “Especially if your home or office HVAC system has no humidifier, skin can start to feel tight very quickly. Even when you do a thorough job of hydrating topically and internally, you still may experience dryness. It’s a good idea to use a combination of solutions.” To start, she recommends using a portable humidifier at night (which also can help you breathe easier), drinking plenty of water each day and applying an effective moisturizer. And when additional help is needed to revitalize skin, there are a number of medical spa treatments that work well, Anderson says. Often, they can be used in combination to produce tailored results.

■ INTRAVENOUS TREATMENTS: Skin- and body-nourishing ‘IV cocktails,’ administered at a medical spa, can help skin stay resilient during colder months. “As winter arrives, we often recommend patients start with a Myers IV cocktail,” Anderson explains. “It has B complex vitamins for good hydration and vitamin C to help cells resist disease. We can add zinc and other nutrients for skin and immune system health, and biotin and glutathione to help with cellular turnover and the effects of aging.” ■ BROADBAND LIGHT: The noninvasive photorejuvenation treatment can lighten red or brown discoloration. ■ MICRONEEDLING: The refining treatment uses very fine needles to penetrate skin so platelet-rich plasma and vitamin serums can be applied. ■ CHEMICAL PEEL: The treatment enhances skin’s appearance by reducing fine lines and wrinkles, improving texture and alleviating pigmentation problems. ■ HYDRATING FACIAL: Customized facial treatments can help restore skin’s moisture. ■ LASER PROCEDURES: Different types of laser treatments can help with lines, wrinkles, rosacea, sun and age spots, broken capillaries, blemishes and acne scars. ☛ Erbium YAG laser treatments can help remove surface level and moderately deep lines and wrinkles. They also can be used to remove broken capillaries on the face. ☛ Intense pulse light laser treatments can improve skin texture and address problems like sun spots, rosacea and acne.

TIP: Autumn is a good time of year

to schedule laser skin procedures because there is less chance of exposing skin to sunlight whileNOVEMBER it is healing. 6, 2019 | townandstyle.com | F15

Aging is like Sailing

PREP WORK

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Judith Gurley says taking good care of your skin before, between and after rejuvenation treatments is one of the most important ways you can help ensure a good outcome. “If you are planning to have microneedling, platelet-rich plasma or retinol therapy, for example, you need to prime the skin so it responds well,” she explains. “You’ll have much better results if you regularly use sunscreen and a good cleanser and moisturizer, and if you follow a healthy diet and lifestyle.” The key is being willing to stick to a daily regimen, according to Gurley. “The healthier your skin is, the more beautiful it appears,” she notes. “It has a glow and feels well hydrated and supple. It also is more resilient. Healthy skin looks great and is free of damage that can lead to problems like skin cancer.” Anderson adds, “It’s important to remember that your skin is not just what you see on the outside. It is part of the integumentary system that also includes the linings of your oral cavity, airways and other structures of the body. The more you do to boost your entire system’s health, the more effectively you can fight off disease, and the more elastic and resilient your skin will be.”

DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME!

With the Internet at our fingertips, it’s easy to access any number of DIY skin care ideas and devices, but there are some methods best left to a trained health care professional. Performing them at home may lead to complications like infection, inflammation, swelling or bruising. It’s smart to consult a licensed professional for treatments like dermaplaning, derma roller microneedling, injectable fillers, lip plumping, acne extraction, cuticle cutting and chemical peels. Jackie Carr, RN, ANP-BC, a licensed esthetician and owner of Pur-One MediSpa, says getting rejuvenation treatments in a professional medical office is preferable because trained personnel can supervise the process in a controlled environment and make sure the skin is responding properly. They also can provide advice about at-home skin care. “It’s important not to overwork your skin during your daily regimen,” Carr says. “You don’t want to cause too much redness or damage capillaries. If you are using products with ingredients like glycolic acid or retinol, they likely are exfoliating your skin already, so you don’t want to do much more on top of that.” She adds that while some over-the-counter products may be OK to use at home, the fact that they are available commercially isn’t a guarantee of safety or effectiveness. &

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS SPECIAL SECTION

There’s SNOW place like home!

HOMEWORK

DEAR HOMEWORK,

We purchased our home this April and absolutely love the interior layout. The outside, however, has been neglected with overgrown landscaping, uneven walkways and a dark, unbalanced exterior. I’d love to explore whitewashing the brick if it would fit the Tudor style, and I want a new front door to allow more light into the house. We have a big front yard, so a circle drive is possible, but it might mean taking down a big elm tree. Would love your amazing eye on how to give this house better curb appeal! Sincerely,

—LOOKING FOR A LIGHTER, BRIGHTER FUTURE

DEAR LOOKING FOR A LIGHTER, BRIGHTER FUTURE,

I have lots of thoughts about your basically good-looking house. First, you can whitewash the brick. I think you’ll see it works wonders in bringing the entire composition together by reducing the distinction of the ‘light’ and ‘dark’ parts. Next, I show building a more prominent entry portal to give that area some oomph. I would choose a solid wood front door, but you could add a wood and glass storm door for the light you desire. I also have created a small terrace outside the front door and bordered it with new brick wing walls. These, together with a new parking area, give the entry element ‘star status’ in the new composition. Additional architectural upgrades include an enlarged staircase window, brick piers and walls at the driveway, and a steeper garage roof to match the main house. Finally, the existing large trees have been retained while allowing for a more useful driveway and a bolder landscape plan. Hopefully some of these ideas can light the way to the future you want. Thanks for asking, —HOMEWORK HOMEWORK IS PENNED BY PAUL DOERNER, FOUNDING PARTNER OF THE LAWRENCE GROUP. IF YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR HOME CRITIQUED, CONTACT US AT HOMEWORK@TOWNANDSTYLE.COM.

HIBERNATE IN STYLE 〉〉 I don’t know about you, but whenever the clock falls back, I always feel the urge to hibernate. Abounding darkness requires a picture-perfect, cozy bedroom. These spaces are begging for someone to curl up in them and will provide inspiration for your own cocoon!

Layer on the texture—this bedroom reads cozy with its multiple rugs and myriad patterns. Use an antique screen as a headboard; this one is lined with raw Chinese silk.

Black walls and white woodwork in the bedroom is an exciting new trend. There are so many new varieties of canopy beds, from traditional to modern to this French-inspired look.

Nothing says sleep like an all-white bedroom with seating that looks seamless with the bed.

A more masculine touch delivers cozy vibes, like a dreamy, oversized leather headboard.

Nothing sounds better in the winter months than a bed where you can pull the drapes around you!

A contemporary wall of marble in the bedroom houses both a fire feature and TV.

Bring the hunting lodge to your room for the ultimate winter ambiance. *ALL IMAGES ABOVE FROM PINTEREST.COM

If you have a little Marilyn in you, the bedroom is a perfect place to let it out!

For a modern feel, an iron canopy bed and subdued fabrics are the perfect touch.

Velvet is making a big comeback, and dark teal pairs beautifully with crisp, white sheets.

HOSTING ome

at h

TURKEY DAY by karyn williams

It’s easy to get stuck doing what you always have for Thanksgiving; it is about tradition, after all. But why not treat your guests to something new, whether it’s the tablescape or a side dish? There are tons of easy ideas for memorable decorations, and green beans don’t have to be served with canned soup.

FOOD

DECORATIONS

▶ Marshmallow-topped sweet potatoes have had their day. Instead, slice peeled sweet potatoes into thin rounds, line in rows in a baking dish, top with olive oil and fresh herbs, and pop in the oven. Tired of green bean casserole? Roast Brussels sprouts and top with bits of bacon, balsamic vinegar and olive oil for a fresher option—guests will thank you! ▶ Yes, it’s called turkey day, but there is no rule that says you have to eat turkey! For a ‘wow’ presentation, give each guest a Cornish hen—a great opp for posting those ‘perfect’ pictures. You also could go way off the grid and do an Italian, Mexican or Greek-themed meal based on your family’s heritage.

▶ Roll out brown packing paper for a tablecloth, and put crayons out for everyone to write what they are thankful for on it. Guests will have fun ‘reading’ the table, and if there is an extra special area, cut it out after dinner and frame it for next year! ▶ Print old family photos in black and white and line various sizes of glass vases with them for your centerpiece. Fill the vases with dried flowers, corn stalks or mini pumpkins. They will encourage happy conversation at the table!

ACTIVITIES ▶ If you have a big group, plan a touch football game in your backyard or at a nearby park. Parents vs. kids, siblings and their families vs. other siblings, girls vs. boys: there are numerous options to have fun with it. Plus, it will get everyone outside and active instead of just hanging out in the kitchen eating ... and eating. ▶ While some family members might complain about doing any kind of game, they will change their tune if it’s fun. Split into groups and do charades (even kids love this one); you can customize the game by creating your own cards based on family members or childhood memories. Other classic options that can include all age groups: Twister, Monopoly and Pictionary.

MARBLE COUNTERTOPS are beautiful and timeless, but that doesn’t mean they are perfect. Don’t get us wrong, we love marble, but there are so many incredible alternatives that we couldn’t help but round up some of our favorites! ▶ No. 1 | Quartzite It looks and feels like marble but is more durable, like granite. There is a lot of confusion surrounding quartzite, and for good reason. True quartzite is a natural stone and looks very similar to marble, but it is less susceptible to staining and scratches. The problem today is many fabricators or stone suppliers are labeling stone as quartzite, but the properties of the stone are more in line with marble. ▶ No. 2 | Terrazzo This speckled beauty is completely customizable and engineered to withstand years of use. It also tends to be environmentally friendly as the glass and chips included in this man-made material are recycled. While terrazzo has been around for quite a while, it has started popping up more and more as a modern alternative to stone countertops. ▶ No. 3 | Soapstone Named for its soft-to-the-touch feel, the nonporous surface of soapstone makes it resistant to bacteria, so cleaning is a breeze. You can skip harsh chemicals and instead opt for more environmentally friendly soap and water. Due to its soft nature, soapstone is more prone to nicks and scratches, but these easily can be repaired with a bit of sandpaper. ▶ No. 4 | Quartz If you love marble but want a tougher alternative, quartz is the way to go. It’s another man-made creation, but unlike terrazzo, quartz can pass as real stone. Available in tons of different colors and styles, it can mimic the look of marble without being too obvious. Quartz is nonporous and stain-resistant, so it’s perfect for a busy family. ▶ No. 5 | Concrete Concrete countertops bring an industrial vibe to a space. They are customized for your space and can be poured elsewhere or directly in your home. They are tough but not resistant to damage. Since they are extremely porous, they will stain easily if not properly sealed and maintained. ▶ No. 6 | Butcher Block Butcher blocks bring a beautiful, natural touch to any kitchen. They are perfect for those who want to skip the cutting board because the wood’s soft surface won’t damage knives. Blades can damage the countertop, though. With a little bit of sanding and a good finishing oil, these countertops are built to last.
