Grow with us
EVENTS, CLASSES, PROGRAMS, & MORE

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MAKE PUBLIC GARDENS SPECIAL IS THEIR ABILITY TO HELP US SEE THE WORLD IN DIFFERENT WAYS. If you’ve attended an art exhibition, special event, or educational program at the Garden, chances are you know what I mean. While our mission is to connect people and plants, we often find that plants help people connect with one another. In difficult and divisive times, opportunities that allow us to relate to one another better couldn’t be more important.
Earlier this year, New England Botanic Garden, like many culture institutions across the country, experienced the abrupt termination of legally awarded federal grant funds. By collaborating with partners, we raised awareness about the essential role public gardens play in the arts and cultural sector and of the tremendous benefits this
sector brings to community health and wellbeing. We couldn’t be more grateful for the outpouring of support our efforts received.
Our Garden community is strong and continues to grow stronger. With more than 250,000 annual visitors and 13,000 member households, we're welcoming more people than ever before. In many ways, members of our community are deepening their commitment to our mission.
A transformative half-million-dollar gift from George and Diantha Harrington endowed the Frank L. Harrington Apple Orchard this year. In this issue of Grow With Us, you can learn more about our latest efforts to preserve the orchard’s historic heirloom apple collection and to share the cultural and scientific significance of its rare apples. Also, in the pages that follow, discover how the Garden is nurturing a community of adult learners through engaging new symposia, lectures with experts, and more.
Meaningful and memorable experiences await your next visit to the Garden. We look forward to connecting with you then!

WHAT’S IN AN HEIRLOOM APPLE NAME? WOULD A ‘LATE STRAWBERRY’ BY ANY OTHER NAME TASTE AS SWEET? PROBABLY! Heirloom apples, varieties chosen for unique attributes from taste and color to texture, size, and functionality, racked up common names as they were passed down over generations from one grower to the next. Take the ‘Lyscom’ whose synonyms include ‘Martha Stripe,’ ‘Mathis Stripe,’ ‘Matthew’s Stripe,’ ‘Nonpareil,’ ‘Osgood’s Favorite,’ and more. The slew of nicknames that can be accumulated by an old apple variety are a part of its charm and a challenge when it comes to preserving them.
Enter dedicated horticultural volunteer Leslie Duthie, who recently added “heirloom apple sleuth” to her long list of botanical accomplishments. Duthie has played a key role in the Garden’s ongoing restoration of the Harrington Orchard. She is now on a mission to ensure our historic orchard is not only given the consistent care it needs to thrive but also that every apple variety in the collection is true to its name.
The Garden’s collection dates to the Great Depression when Worcester County Horticultural Society trustee Stearns Lothrop Davenport began preserving old and uncommon apple cultivars, some with extremely local orgins. Building the collection decades ago relied on the record-keeping tools of the day. Highly skilled orchardists had only their senses to distinguish apple varieties with very similar traits. With advances in DNA technology, we are now able to learn more about the origins of unusual apples in our collection and, in many cases, use genetic analysis to confirm our records. Much like a museum curator verifying the painter of a piece
of art, the value in preserving these apple varieties can only be fully realized if their true identities are known.
Recent DNA testing conducted by Washington State University and collaboration with partners at RegisTREE of North America reveals that some of the Garden’s apples are exceptionally rare—the only examples currently found in the DNA database. Results also show that a small number of apples aren’t the varieties they were believed to be. The ‘Lyscom,’ Duthie discovered while reviewing results, has been misrepresented in the Garden’s collection for years.
Apple varieties don’t come true to seed. They can only be preserved in living collections. This means that to complete the Garden’s collection and incorporate any missing varieties, we need to find living specimens and collect scionwood. Duthie hopes that the ‘Lyscom’ variety and several others can be traced to their roots. First recorded in 1817, the ‘Lyscom’ was named after a Southborough, MA farmer. In honor of their agricultural heritage, the town maintains a ‘Lyscom’ variety.
Preserving a complete and correct apple collection has implications beyond the Garden’s orchard. While verifying identities and finding missing varieties, Duthie forges connections between the Garden, researchers, nurseries, and orchards. This work elevates identification standards that strengthen broader heirloom apple conservation efforts. As her detective work continues, we expect more stories about the people and places that shaped the Garden’s unique collection to arise, and we look forward to sharing them!
IT’S THE NATURE OF A GARDEN TO KEEP ON GROWING. At NEBG, we’re expanding not only our plant collections and garden spaces, but also educational opportunities that nurture a community of life-long learners—or as Manager of Adult Education, Alyson Prokop, likes to say, “plant nerds and garden geeks.” You can find your people here.
When it comes to sharing plant knowledge, Prokop focuses on bringing depth and diversity to educational events. A trained botanist, artist, and market flower gardener, she weaves her own expertise into programs while also creating experiences that inspire people to follow their curiosity in the garden, dig deeper into their relationships with plants, and build connections in new and fun ways. She often enhances learning opportunities through food and drink. A workshop on grape cultivation with one of the region’s foremost growers, for example, would not be complete without a wine tasting. And why discuss the secrets of heirloom tomato seed saving if participants aren’t given the chance to savor the vibrant flavors of uncommon tomato varieties for themselves?
Also new in Adult Education, blossoming partnerships with regional organizations like Grow Native Massachusetts, Reimagined Roots, and others have led to the creation of free speaker series events and
additional programs centered on ecological horticulture and sustainable gardening. Several new collaborative conferences and symposia are coming to the Garden this fall. Mark your calendar for Plant Geek Day, September 10. This event invites industry professionals, gardeners, and curious plant lovers of all kinds to connect through lectures, hands-on learning, and more. Also debuting are the Northeastern Nut Tree Symposium on November 2 and New England Apple Tree Symposium on November 15 and 16.
For individuals not quite ready to profess how geekily interested they are in plants, or those who simply enjoy exploring other interests while at the Garden, Adult Education programs continue to feature a robust array of arts and wellness classes. From yoga and forest bathing to photography and floral arranging, these offerings provide participants with connections to the natural world, gardening, and each other.
This edition of Grow With Us includes details on the exciting educational opportunities described here and more, but to be sure you stay in the know and join a budding community of learners, visit nebg.org/adult-education and sign up for the new bi-monthly Adult Education E-Newsletter!
