In a bid to boost tourism in Africa, it is time that we change our narrative from a continent that needs saving to one that is thriving. Amanda Kotze-Nhlapo - SANCB

Africa’s Story

Tourism Tattler

Issue 2 of 2019

Telling Africa’s Story ‘Africa’s stories - your success’, was this year’s key theme at Africa’s Travel Indaba held at the International Convention Centre in Durban from 02 - 05 May. Speaking at a media launch prior to the event, Amanda Kotze-Nhlapo of the South Africa National Convention Bureau (SANCB) elaborated on the theme by saying that Africans must own their narrative so that they can embark on the journey of changing the continent’s story. “We no longer look to the world for affirmation or inspiration, the world looks to us. We are real, vibrant and driven to succeed. So, we invite the world to journey with us and tell the new story of Africa.” Kotze-Nhlapo added that the responsibility of safeguarding Africa’s narrative is not only up to its storytellers but all Africans. “In this post-truth world, it is up to each of us to be vigilant about the way Africa is depicted. We can be the watchdogs of misrepresented stories and best of all, we have the digital tools to keep the narrative truthful.” She said social media gives everyone the power to engage with media, influencers and other prominent individuals so that “we can change the narrative together and basically set the story straight”. And that’s exactly what this issue of Tourism Tattler aims to do: to showcase Africa’s Story. Travel • Enjoy • Respect Des Langkilde - Editor.

Taking Africa’s Art to the World “Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together.” – J.C.Penney – Founded in November 2017, The Travelling Art Gallery is a collaborative initiative of African artists steered by two Cape Town based creative Germans, Barbara Lenhard and Florian Gast. Their collective ambition is to take African art to the world and invite the world to visit Africa. And this they have done exceedingly well with 12 South African artists and 80 stunning artworks displayed at three pop-up exhibitions in three German cities for 10 days each in 2018. Funding for the 2018 pop-up expos over 50 days was raised via two successful Kickstarter crowdfunding campaigns in 2018. This year, 15 artists and over 100 artworks will be displayed in Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Munich from 13 June to 21 July 2019. For more information visit TheTravellingArtGallery.com Watch the 53 sec video clip about the 2019 project and the cities to be visited below:

Africa’s Story

Tourism Tattler

Issue 2 of 2019

Uniting a NATION 25th Anniversary of the South African Flag To this day, the peaceful settlement negotiated in Johannesburg is hailed as one of the greatest achievements in modern political history. And while South Africa’s remarkable journey from apartheid to democracy has been documented extensively, the full history of the development of the ‘new’ South African flag has never been published. Flying with Pride is the story of the South African flag. This story covers a short, but intense period from August 1993 until April 1994. It is only eight months, but eight important months that would forever change the DNA of South Africa as a country. This ‘coffee-table style book’ looks at how the people of South Africa have embraced the flag and used it for anything from company logos to pendants, from hard hats to bow ties and let’s not forget our great export to the world – the Vuvuzela! It also includes the fascinating (and often humorous) stories from when the Multi-Party Negotiating Council created a commission to look at National Symbols, until the flag flew for the first time in 1994. The Flying with Pride books are ideal tourist mementos and can be ordered with personalised fly sheet & corporate branding, at R395.00 (VAT incl). Bulk discounts apply.

Tourism Tattler

Issue 2 of 2019

“It is our duty to protect the environment so that guests can enjoy the natural beauty of Africa for years to come.” Suzanne Benadie - Tourvest DMC Sales Director

Since inception in 2012, Tourvest DMCs Green Seat initiative has donated over R510 000 towards antirhino poaching, R216 000 towards reforestation, and R84 000 to the community project that produces the Green Seat client badges. The Green Seat is included in all guided tours and can also be added to tailor-made itineraries on request. Guests receive a Green Seat Badge as a token of thanks from their tour guide or in their travel documentation pack. These accumulated funds are distributed 100% to accredited partners. The most recent partner to the Green Seat portfolio, EWT, rounds out contribution efforts towards a more sustainable South Africa, by adding community projects to develop disadvantaged communities. Now, with the purchase of a Green Seat guests travelling with Tourvest DMC will contribute towards creating EcoBricks, which are currently being used at two primary schools outside of Johannesburg to demarcate vegetable gardens, play areas and build benches for the children to sit on during breaks. Green Seat purchases also now contribute towards EWT’s anti-poaching unit which trains Tourvest DMC’s adopted Conservation Canine’s, Fury and Pirate, to detect rhino horns, elephant ivory, firearms and ammunition. T

ongabezi is a magical hideaway nestled into the banks of the Zambezi directly opposite where the sun sets on the calm water each night. Guests come to Tongabezi to spoil themselves, to take some well-earned ‘me time’. What they may not realise is that Tongabezi, like many African lodges, has a greater goal and that their stay is a vital part of it. Tourism Tattler

Issue 2 of 2019

Africa’s Story The Tongabezi Trust School, Tujatane, is a two-minute walk from the lodge, and provides free education to over 270 Simonga Village children. It also has a food programme so that the children at least get two nutritious meals each day. Tujatane runs entirely on donations from ex-guests like these who have fallen in love with the school and its students. Even guests who donate nothing are part of the uplifting effect that Tongabezi has on Simonga and on Zambia itself. Their luxury holiday supports a family-run company which is doing its very best to raise an entire community. Luxury lodges all over Africa have similar ideas, whether their focus is education, job creation, sustainability or wildlife conservation.
