Come winter, the Long Lake Ski Area becomes the go-to place. Beside the park lies a golf course and the White Earth Valley Natural Area, boasting 17 km of multi-use trails.
EXTRAORDINARY NEWBROOK
In the northern part of Thorhild County lies the hamlet of Newbrook. Known for its Newbrook Observatory offering an out-of-this-world glimpse into the history of astronomy in the region. It captured the first North American photograph of the world’s first satellite, Sputnik No.1, on October 9, 1957. Don’t miss the Newbrook Fair on June 21 with tons of fun activities for the whole family! The Community Hall is an excellent venue for weddings and family reunions with camping available. Waskatenau
Waskatenau (pronounced WAS-ET-NA), originally known as Pine Creek, is considered the Baseball Capital of Alberta. The small, progressive community of 247 residents is located 45 minutes northeast of Edmonton on Highway 28.
TREK THE TRAILS
Set out on a hike along the Nature Trail starting at the historic 1919 wooden train trestle, and following the creek for a quarter mile. This location is also the western trailhead for the Iron Horse Trail, which stretches east for 260 kilometers of multiuse activities. Just south of town near the North Saskatchewan River is the 58 km Victoria Trail, once an Indigenous trail leading to the Victoria Settlement. As you go east on Victoria Trail, you will pass by the new Pine Creek Retreat on your way to see the RCMP Memorial Statue. It is 15 km east of Highway 831 and was constructed in 1998 by the Victoria Home Guard Society to honour the original 20 members of the Northwest
Mounted Police who travelled to Fort Edmonton on the Victoria Trail in 1874.

The Iron Horse Trail, a multi-use recreational trail, follows the former Canadian National Railway line and is the longest continuous stretch of the Trans Canada Trail in Alberta. The Cold Lake Bike Park & Trails, located around the Cold Lake Museum, provides 6 km of non-motorized mountain bike trails catering to riders of all skill levels, complete with a pump track, jump features, and more. Just north of the museum, the Cold Lake Motocross Association operates a 2.8 km stateof-the-art scenic raceway facility suitable for beginners to expert riders. The Iron Horse Trail, which runs west of Cold Lake, features the impressive Beaver River Trestle. This trestle spans ½ a km long and 60 meters high, making it a must-see attraction! Explore the Iron Horse Trail west of Cold Lake, following the old railway line for ATVing, hiking, or biking. METEORITE MARVEL
Check out a piece of the Bruderheim Meteorite at the Bruderheim Fire Hall. The meteorite fell in 1960 and is the largest recovered meteorite fall in Canada. The impact from the giant rock shook homes – it could be heard from over 5,000 sq km – about 700 fragments were found in the area. Just a little east of Pysanka Park on Hwy 16A, you will find Our Lady of the Highway Shrine. It is beautifully sculpted from Italian white marble and it’s the only one of its kind in Canada. Behind the monument, exquisitely marked stones display the Stations of the Cross in a tranquil park setting.

Just east of Vegreville on Highway 16A is the internationally recognized Rotary Peace Park featuring a Peace Grove of 12 trees, where you can relax and enjoy the park. It offers a large picnic area, shelter with a fireplace and a covered BBQ area that can be reserved for private functions. On the south side of Hwy 16 by Vegreville you can enjoy many species of birds while fishing at the Vegreville Trout Pond. This scenic parcel of land boasts a man-made lake stocked with rainbow trout. Travelling east on Hwy 16 beyond the hamlet of Lavoy, you will come upon Akasu Hill This location holds historical importance, encompassing Akasu Lake and the hill itself. Akasu Hill was a place of respite for indigenous tribes, with 'Akasu' meaning 'sick' in Cree. The name is thought to derive from those who fell ill after drinking the lake’s water, with the hill being their final resting place. Akasu, also known as Sickman Hill, represents the highest geodetic point on the Yellowhead Highway between Edmonton and Winnipeg, Manitoba, at 2500 feet above sea level. Beaver County is once again participating in the Roadtrip Adventure Game with two awesome campground locations.Either park makes for a great stop to stretch your legs, have a picnic and enjoy the outdoors. Black Nugget Lake is developed out of a former coal mine with spacious treed sites or back-to-nature tenting with scenic hiking trails. The lake is perfect for canoeing, kayaking, and trout fishing. Take a trip back in time at the Viking Museum, formerly the Viking Hospital. Located at the north end of main street, this village of restored buildings include a one-room schoolhouse, log store, church and farmhouse. Inside the former hospital, you can tour rooms housing collections of history from the Viking and surrounding community. At the museum there is a large collection of tools, implements, and vintage International Harvester tractors. Be sure to find the restored Milk Wagon listed in the provincial archives as the last operating horse-drawn delivery wagon used in Viking until 1965.
