ATTRACTIONS & EVENTS Join the village for their Sports Day in May. The community always looks forward to the Lougheed Country Fair which will be held in August. The fair includes exhibits showcasing the talents of community members such as quilting and knitting displays, as well as horse and cattle shows. Don’t miss the pancake breakfast and parade! The Iron Creek Museum consists of several heritage buildings, chock-full of items from founding families as well as the local elevator that houses several displays. The museum is open in the summer only; however, they occasionally host an old-time Christmas concert in the school and light up the wood furnace — just like the old days (see also the CREAM Museum tour page 21). During the winter, the Lougheed Field House is the community’s hub of activity where people can enjoy various activities and use of a gym. Shoot some hoops, play pickleball, dodgeball and more.
OUTDOORS The village has something to offer everyone in all seasons. The community is proud of the camping and picnic locations, trout pond, horseshoe pits, model aircraft field, and four baseball diamonds. Residents and visitors can also enjoy crosscountry skiing, snowmobiling, and curling in this friendly community.
Hardisty's slogan is “More Than You Imagine,” which is fitting considering the beautiful scenery that provides a backdrop for plenty of outdoor activities and fun events taking place year round. Located in the heart of the rolling hills of the Battle River Valley, Hardisty is a two hour drive from Edmonton. Coming from the southeast, you will be pleasantly surprised by the wide and winding road. From the northwest, come at dusk to see the lights of the Hardisty Tank Farm, part of Alberta's Energy Hub. Agriculture and the energy sector make up a large portion of Hardisty’s economy.
ATTRACTIONS & EVENTS The 71st annual Hardisty Rodeo is on July 19-21. Enjoy the Street Fair, Parade, Rodeo, Chariots, Chuckwagons, and the Combine Crunch. If your kids like to have fun on the lake, make crafts, and meet others, then check out the United Church Camp. Other events throughout the year are held at the Hardisty Community Hall. Community suppers and Christmas parties, as well as fundraisers such as Ladies Night in March, Spring Fling in April, and Slice & Ice in October are all presented with lively entertainment.
SOUTHEAST OF EDMONTON
The Village of Lougheed, incorporated in 1911, is located just under two hours southeast of Edmonton on Highway 13 near the beautiful Battle River Valley. With a strong economy in agriculture and oil & gas activity, Lougheed serves the area with a selection of shopping, dining, supplies, and services.
OUTDOORS Golfing, camping, boating, swimming, and baseball are just a few of the activities that Hardisty has to offer. The campground and the public beach at the Hardisty Lake Park are right in town; inviting campers and day visitors all summer long. The beautiful sandy beach is reminiscent of what you would see in a warmer climate. It’s a great place to visit; canoes, kayaks, and small motorized boats are welcome on the lake. Nearby, play 9 holes at the Lakeview Golf Course – with long term camping availability so that you can make it your summer and weekend home. The Golf Course and the Lake Park open at the beginning of May, as weather permits. The Battle River runs adjacent to town – where you can spend the day canoeing down the river or watching wildlife at the riverside campground. Continued on page 135...
