The 153rd Open, Royal Portrush, 13th to 20th July, 2025.
Your essential visitor guide
We are delighted to welcome one of the biggest events in the global sporting calendar back to our beautiful north coast
With The 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush now only weeks away, there is genuine excitement that The Open is returning so soon after the huge success of The 148th Open in 2019.
Hosting golf’s original major will see some of the world’s top golfers cheered on by more than a quarter of a million local, national and international golf fans, who will be living every shot with them as they bid to claim the historic Claret Jug.
And while we wish them all well, it would be incredible to see another famous winner.
The 148th Open was a massive success, but this year’s Championship promises to be a showcase of even greater proportions. It will generate an estimated £213 million for Portrush, the north coast and for the whole region.
Growing a globally competitive and sustainable economy is one of the Executive’s key priorities, and tourism has a vital part to play in achieving that goal.
The industry supports thousands of good jobs and brings millions of pounds into our communities, supporting local and regional development and enabling visitors and residents alike to enjoy incredible experiences.
We have become a world-class destination, rightly known across the globe for our beautiful landscapes, our rich culture, our warm hospitality and, of course, our truly outstanding golf courses.
The Open will certainly strengthen our position as a must-visit destination and attract visitors from near and far, with estimates that live coverage of our stunning scenery will be beamed to TV screens in 100 million homes across almost 200 countries.
More than 600 journalists from around the world will also descend on Portrush to cover the action.
We have already seen the legacy of The Open in 2019 support the growth of golf tourism here, with the overall value reaching £86.2 million last year.
In 2024, Northern Ireland was named the Best Golf Destination in Western Europe by golf tour operators who bring overseas visitors to play our 90 golf courses.
And research shows that for every £1 spent on green fees at our courses, a further £4 is spent elsewhere in the economy, bringing huge benefits for local businesses.
Of course, putting on a world-class event like The Open does not happen by accident and we would like to thank all those who have played a part in delivering the event, including The R&A, Tourism Northern Ireland, Royal Portrush Golf Club, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council and colleagues across government and the emergency services.
We’d also like to pay tribute to the thousands of volunteers, marshals and permanent and temporary staff who will be working hard to make sure the week runs smoothly and is enjoyed by all.
The 153rd Open promises to be a memorable week of sporting drama, which will be enjoyed by the thousands who are lucky enough to have a ticket, and many millions more who will watch from home.
We’d encourage everyone to support the event and help contribute to a legacy which will be felt for many years to come.

I am delighted to welcome The Open back to Royal Portrush and the economic benefits which this major event will bring to the region
Tourism is already a major driver of our economy and hosting key events such as The Open will help us to achieve the Programme for Government’s Strategic Goal of tourism expenditure from overnight visitors exceeding £2 billion by 2035.
We have set this ambitious goal because our world class visitor attractions, widely renowned golf courses, outstanding hospitality offering and reputation for delivering global events have made the region an increasingly attractive holiday destination.
With 70% of tourism jobs located outside of Belfast, the sector is also key to dispersing prosperity right across Northern Ireland, enriching our communities and bringing diversity, cultural and social benefits to our towns and cities in addition to the economic boost that it brings.
The Championship will not only benefit the Causeway Coast & Glens, but right across the region as visitors stay on outside of the tournament to play other golf courses, explore our scenery, enjoy our hospitality and visit our many other attractions.
Hosting a globally renowned sporting event such as The 153rd Open is an opportunity to showcase a great place to live, visit and invest in, whilst generating sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
The Open will no doubt create a great sense of pride locally and internationally. It will bring us to the attention of the world and provide an unrivalled platform to tell our unique story.
We must build on this success to achieve the goal of creating a thriving, sustainable tourism industry for the future.
Dr Caoimhe Archibald Economy Minister

The 153rd Open offers an opportunity to celebrate sport, community, and Northern Ireland’s unique place on the world stage.
I truly believe that The Open is the greatest championship in golf and am both proud and excited that this will be my first as Chief Executive of The R&A. We will do everything we can to make this happen.
The passion and enthusiasm that Irish fans have for golf is world-renowned and was clearly illustrated six
The Open held at Royal Portrush in 2019 was the largest ever sporting event held in Northern Ireland and generated over £100 million in economic benefit for the country. With 278,000 fans due to visit Portrush to attend this year’s Championship as it is beamed live to tens of millions of TV viewers worldwide, we expect to surpass this figure by some way and generate an estimated £213 million in benefit to the economy – underlining The Open’s reputation as a major global sporting event and strengthening Northern Ireland’s status as a world-class
government and the public agencies in Northern Ireland for their continuing support and commitment in helping us to plan and stage The Open. Their enthusiasm and expertise has been crucial and we thank them for the work they have contributed towards making this all possible.
The Open is renowned for its enduring qualities that have stood the test of time since its first playing in 1860 – the knowledge and respect shown by fans; the drama and excitement unfolding in front of our eyes; and the challenge presented by the world’s greatest links courses. It is a special event and I, for one, cannot wait to welcome many of you to the stunning Antrim coast to see who will master Royal Portrush and lift the Claret Jug on Sunday 20 July.

Taking simple precautions and being aware of the potential dangers at the coast can help keep you safe.
• Check the weather forecast and tide times before visiting the coast to avoid getting caught out by the tide.
• Look out for and follow advice on warning signs.
• Avoid slippery and unstable rocks and stay clear of cliff edges.
• Never go into water while under the influence of alcohol, drugs or peer pressure.
• Take a fully charged mobile phone with you to call for help if needed.
In a coastal emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Visit hmcoastguard.uk for more information.
Just like perfecting your golf swing, fire safety requires awareness and good technique.
Dry and breezy weather can turn small mistakes into major fire risks. Always dispose of cigarettes properly, as even a single ember can ignite dry grass. Keep BBQs and fire pits away from flammable areas, never leave them unattended, and fully extinguish them before leaving. Glass bottles left in the sun can magnify heat and start fires, so always clean up after yourself. By staying fire aware, we can all enjoy a safe summer – on and off the course. Visit www.nifrs.org for more safety advice.
Ahead of The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush the Public Health Agency (PHA) is reminding those attending of some simple steps to ensure they stay healthy during the competition.
• Handwashing is the best way to prevent spreading germs and stay healthy. Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and hot running water before eating or drinking and after using the toilet.
• Care in the sun – stay in the shade when possible, cover up, wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection and a broad brim hat. Use sun protection with at least SPF 30 and UVA 4 stars.
• Stay hydrated – drink water regularly throughout the day, especially when exercising or in hot weather to stay healthy.
• If you’re drinking alcohol during The Open, know your limits. Drinking too much can seriously damage your health.

I am delighted to welcome The Open to Northern Ireland
Just six years ago, The 148th Open at Royal Portrush made for a truly incredible celebration of not only golf but also our beautiful region and all that it has to offer. There was an explosion of pride on the Causeway Coastal Route and indeed, across the island of Ireland, when homegrown Champion Golfer Shane Lowry lifted the Claret Jug, making for momentous scenes never before witnessed at an Open.
With The 153rd Open almost upon us, I have no doubt this Championship will be just as memorable, as we stand proud to deliver another epic sports event while showcasing Northern Ireland as a world class golf and travel destination.
Huge excitement for this global golf spectacular has been building for some time with unprecedented demand for tickets. General admission tickets for all eight days were snapped up in record time through the ticket ballot, making it the fastest sell-out in Open ballot history.
As with 2019, the delivery of such a historic golfing event does not happen overnight. Years of planning have gone into its smooth delivery with Tourism Northern Ireland working in partnership with The R&A, Royal Portrush Golf Club, Causeway Coast and Glens Council, the emergency services and colleagues right across Government.
The commitment displayed by all involved is to be commended. It is estimated by Sheffield Hallam University that the event will deliver a combined economic and media benefit of £213 million and, as with 2019, its legacy will be felt for years to come across Northern Ireland.
Many of those attending The Open will spend their non-ticket days away from the course experiencing what we have to offer as a holiday destination as well as playing golf at any one of our excellent courses.
Northern Ireland has more than 90 golf courses, including Royal Portrush and Royal County Down, which are regularly featured in the top 20 world rankings, and golf tourism has increased significantly thanks to the quality of courses on offer.
It’s no surprise then that in 2024, Northern Ireland was named Best Golf Destination in Western Europe by the influential International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IGATO). The overall value of golf tourism in 2024 was £86.2m, the highest figure ever recorded for golf tourism in the region.
With The 153rd Open due to be broadcast into 100 million homes in 190 countries, it is hoped the international coverage won’t just grab the imagination of golfers, but also the attention of global investors.
This priceless publicity puts Northern Ireland front and centre on a global stage as a `must-see’ tourist destination. This is set to be an outstanding experience for everyone involved. I am confident that The 153rd Open will be remembered by players and spectators alike as one of the greatest Championships in the history of the major.
We hope you enjoy it.

A Giant Welcome Through Young Eyes
Northern Ireland is proud to host The 153rd Open and we want everyone to embrace our giant welcome. To mark the occasion, Tourism NI invited local school children to create artwork that represented what the people and places of Northern Ireland mean to them, and how they want their home to be seen by global golf fans.
With our world-famous attractions, legendary giants and golfing superstars as inspiration, our young artists captured the spirit of Northern Ireland with colour, imagination and pride.
GIANT congratulations to our competition winners, Bodhi (6), Jessica (7), Elise (8), Lucia (15), Alexander (11) and Lydia (15) with Lucia claiming the overall top prize of tickets to The 153rd Open. Their artwork celebrates the return of The Open and showcases the giant spirit that lives around every corner in Northern Ireland.
