Tucked away on the serene banks of the Makhutswi River lies Makalali River Lodge — a five-star sanctuary where raw African beauty meets refined indulgence.
This exquisite lodge is made up of three exclusive camps, each o ering six elegantly appointed suites that blend seamlessly into the surrounding wilderness. Designed for privacy yet connected by a sense of community, each camp boasts its own plunge pool, atmospheric boma, and an enclosed dining and lounge area that invites guests to unwind in style.
Makalali River Lodge is more than a destination. It’s a journey into untamed luxury, where the rhythm of the river and the thrill of the bush redefine the meaning of escape.
“Our stay at Ivory Tree Game Lodge exceeded
all expectations. The combination of luxurious accommodations, thrilling activities, and the rare opportunity to see the Big 5 in their natural habitat made it a trip of a lifetime.”
estled in the heart of the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, Ivory Tree Game Lodge offers a luxurious and immersive safari experience which blends a unique balance of adventure, relaxation, and the raw beauty of the African bush. The TNA team was lucky enough to experience this 5-star lodge, and it was nothing short of magical, filled with amazingly fun activities, exquisite dining, and the unforgettable thrill of encountering the Big 5, all within the malaria-free Pilanesberg.
Arrival and First Impressions
From the moment we arrived at Ivory Tree Game Lodge, our team was warmly greeted, and the extraordinary hospitality that followed was set from the very moment we arrived, we instantly felt at home and were made to feel special. The lodge is set within the crater of an ancient (now extinct) volcano, and is surrounded by breathtaking plains and hills, creating a serene backdrop. The rooms are elegantly furnished with African-inspired décor, views that immediately make you say “wow” and of course the luxurious plush beds, private patios, and even an outdoor shower. The attention to detail and luxurious amenities set the tone for an extraordinary experience.
Game Drives: Encountering the Big 5
The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the open-air game drives, where we were lucky enough to spot the Big 5 - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino - over the course of our stay. The stay included two game drives per day, one of which started with the crisp air and stunning sunrises that only Mama Africa can offer. Our
evening game drives were equally spectacular, as we spotted a variety of game under the golden glow of a stunning sunset, with colours that looked more like a painting than real-life. The expertise and passion for wildlife of the rangers made each drive both educational and exhilarating.
Adventure Activities: Quad Biking and Archery
Beyond the game drives, Ivory Tree offers a range of activities to suit every taste. One afternoon, we embarked on a quad biking trail which was an hour long ride through the bushveld (no experience required), and took us through rugged terrain and into a local community, where we learned about the lodge’s community projects.
The TNA team also tried our hands at archery and air gun shooting, both of which were made to look easy by the instructors, but proved a great team building opportunity for us.
As a means of further immersing ourselves within African culture, we joined an interactive drumming circle. The drum circle was a lively, inclusive experience that brought out laughs and rhythm, connecting us to the rich traditions of the region. The team also took the time to unwind, and visited the award-winning Amani African Spa, a tranquil oasis overlooking the bush. The massage was pure bliss, with skilled therapists using authentic African-inspired techniques to melt away any tension. The spa’s serene setting made it the ultimate escape for indulgence.
Dining at Ivory Tree was a feast for the senses. The lodge’s indoor restaurant offered a refined setting with views of the wide open bushveld, while the outdoor Boma provided a truly authentic African dining experience under the stars. Each meal was a masterpiece, crafted with locally sourced ingredients and blending African flavours with international cuisines. From hearty breakfasts to three-course dinners, the talented chefs ensured every dish was perfect. We particularly loved the Boma evenings, where the crackling fire and stories shared created an unforgettable memories.
While our stay was focused on leisure, we couldn’t help but notice Ivory Tree’s conferences and event facilities. The lodge can host up to 120 delegates in a state-of-the-art conference venue, complete with modern equipment and spectacular catering. It’s also a dreamy wedding venue, accommodating up to 140 guests with 67 rooms for 134 sharing guests. The romantic setting and impeccable service make it an ideal choice for special occasions.
Our stay at Ivory Tree Game Lodge exceeded all expectations. The combination of luxurious accommodations, thrilling activities, and the rare opportunity to see the Big 5 in their natural habitat made it a trip of a lifetime. The staff’s warmth added a personal touch that made us feel truly cared for. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a cultural connection, Ivory Tree delivers it all with unparalleled elegance. We’re already planning our return to this extraordinary lodge in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve.

Africa’s coastlines offer more than just beach escapes. For sailors and yachting enthusiasts, the continent reveals coralringed islands, open-water crossings and sailing routes that range from tropical calm to full-ocean challenge. Whether you’re chartering a catamaran, hopping between island bays or planning a longer blue water stretch, these are the best yachting routes across Africa.
Seychelles
Route: Mahé – Praslin – La Digue – Curieuse
Type: Domestic (Seychelles)
Possibly Africa’s most iconic sailing playground. Smooth seas, short distances, and marine parks make this route ideal for both beginners and seasoned sailors. With charter catamarans readily available, island-hopping here is all about snorkelling, freshcaught seafood, and slow mornings at anchor.
Explore charters through Sunsail Seychelles or Dream Yacht Worldwide.
Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique
Route: Vilankulo – Bazaruto – Benguerra – Margaruque
Type: Domestic (Mozambique)
A lesser-known gem offering sandbanks, turquoise waters, and an untouched sense of calm. Though facilities are basic, experienced yachties will find rewards in its remote beauty and dramatic dune landscapes. Sail with the tide and spot dolphins along the way.
Charter a yacht via East Africa Yacht Charters or browse tailored catamaran options through GlobeSailor.
Cape Town to Lüderitz, Namibia
Route: Cape Town – Saldanha – Port Nolloth – Lüderitz
Type: Cross-border (South Africa to Namibia)
A serious Atlantic crossing with strong winds and icy waters. This is one for confident crews and ocean-ready yachts. Stop in Saldanha or Port Nolloth before clearing customs into Namibia. The ghost towns of Kolmanskop and Lüderitz await at journey’s end.
Review weather windows via Windy.
Zanzibar and Tanzania Coast
Route: Dar es Salaam – Zanzibar – Pemba – Mafia Island
Type: Domestic (Tanzania)
Spice islands meet sailing life. Between the historical allure of Stone Town and the marine reserves of Mafia Island, this route is full of colour, culture, and reef-rich diving. Charter operators run from Dar and Zanzibar, with anchorages tucked near white-sand bays.
You can plan with Zanzibar Yacht Charter
Dakar to Cape Verde
Route: Dakar – Sal – Boa Vista – Mindelo
Type: Cross-border (Senegal to Cape Verde)
For those crossing continents, this trans-Atlantic segment is a favourite. With strong trade winds and open skies, it’s a route made for bluewater yachts. The approach into Mindelo, Cape Verde’s lively yachting hub, is one of the Atlantic’s most rewarding arrivals.
Passage planning updates can be done via Noonsite
“Yachting in Africa isn’t about ticking off destinations. It’s about moving with the weather, adapting when things shift, and seeing the continent from a quieter, less-travelled angle.”
Red Sea, Egypt
Route: Hurghada – El Gouna – Marsa Alam – Port Ghalib
Type: Domestic (Egypt)
A warm water escape where desert meets reef. The Egyptian Red Sea coast has excellent marina infrastructure and easy access to world-renowned dive sites. Anchor off coral walls or pull into full-service ports, then head inland for pharaohs and pyramids.
Book dive-friendly charters at
São Tomé and Príncipe
Route: São Tomé – Ilhéu das Rolas – Príncipe
Type: Domestic (São Tomé and Príncipe)
Remote but remarkable. The islands lie in the Gulf of Guinea and reward sailors with rainforest trails, volcanic backdrops and birdlife found nowhere else. Anchor in clear bays, visit cocoa plantations, and enjoy the luxury of feeling like the only boat in sight.
Yacht charters are limited, but custom sailing trips can be arranged through local eco-lodges or island-based travel agents.
Know your seasons: Indian Ocean routes (Seychelles, Zanzibar, Bazaruto) are calmest from November to April. The Atlantic and Red Sea coasts (Namibia, Cape Verde, Egypt) are best sailed May to October, avoiding harsh trade winds and storms.
Provision smartly:
Fuel, water, and food supplies can be limited outside major ports. Stock up before departure with at least a week’s worth of essentials, including jerry cans and extra drinking water.
Bring local currency:
Port fees, clearance charges and small market purchases are often cash-only. Always carry enough local currency in small denominations.
Update your navigation tools: Many regions lack accurate charts. Use reliable GPS, offline tools like Navionics, and paper backups.
Anchor responsibly:
Anchor only on sandy or muddy seabeds. Never on coral or seagrass. Use mooring buoys when available in marine parks like Bazaruto or Mafia Island. Some protected areas require permits or guides.
Sort cross-border formalities ahead:
If crossing borders (e.g. South Africa to Namibia, Senegal to Cape Verde), organise customs clearance in advance. Have your boat registration, crew list, and travel plans ready, and notify port authorities at both ends.
Yachting in Africa isn’t about ticking off destinations. It’s about moving with the weather, adapting when things shift, and seeing the continent from a quieter, less-travelled angle. Each route has its rhythm, but the real value is in charting your own course.

From popcorn nights to plating filet mignon at sea, Matt gets real about the yacht life.
You’ve worked across Europe and the Middle East, but what’s something about Africa’s coastline that chefs elsewhere just wouldn’t understand until they experience it firsthand?
The fishing scene in the Indian Ocean is next level, especially around Seychelles and Mauritius. We’re talking world-class tuna, wahoo, red snapper… basically a seafood lover’s dream. You don’t truly grasp freshness until you’re filleting your dinner 20 minutes after pulling it out of the water.
Tourism along Africa’s shores still feels underrated. What hidden gem or lesser-known destination completely surprised you—and why should more people know about it?
Kenton on Sea. Tiny town, massive vibe. It’s tucked away in the Eastern Cape and somehow has four beaches, all with their own charm. The sunsets? Some of the best I’ve seen in South Africa. It’s one of those places you stumble into… and suddenly don’t want to leave.
You once mentioned making popcorn and tea after a long shift—what’s your go-to comfort meal at sea when things get intense?
Oh, it’s got to be my Marry Me Chicken. Warm, hearty, and just gives off ‘everything’s going to be okay’ energy. It tastes like home, even when the boat’s rocking and you haven’t slept properly in two days.
If you could host a one-night-only pop-up yacht dining experience just off the African coast, where would you anchor—and what would be on the menu?
Easy. Somewhere calm and cinematic — maybe off the coast of Mozambique.
Starters? Fried burrata and beef carpaccio.
Main? Herb-crusted fillet mignon with truffle mash and a rich red wine jus.
Dessert? My signature Amarula tiramisu. Boozy, creamy and unapologetically South African.
You’ve sailed through wild conditions and calm waters—what’s the most unforgettable ‘Africa moment’ you’ve had at sea?
After battling through hectic weather and rough swells, anxiety levels on 100 — I finally had a brandy and coke. Sitting on deck, watching the clouds break, sipping that drink… it was pure relief. A proper exhale.
Let’s be honest—what’s something no one tells you about yacht life in Africa that every aspiring chef should know before diving in?
It’s demanding. Emotionally, physically and sometimes even spiritually. You’re away from home, in tight quarters, cooking under pressure. But here’s the thing, you get to see so much of the world so young. That’s rare. It’s a privilege, even when it doesn’t always feel like it.

Are you prepared to turn your yachting excursion into the highlight of your wildlife hunt? Africa’s seas invite you to explore a world of astounding surprises where the largest and most fascinating marine life comes to life just outside your deck. Every trip offers an opportunity to learn more about Africa’s amazing marine biodiversity, from cheerful dolphins to giants of the water.
An Ocean of Adventure Awaits
Imagine sailing through a turquoise paradise, where the water is endless on one side and the coastline is beautiful on the other. Africa’s underwater playground is overflowing with life beneath the waves, giving every moment on deck the impression of an adventure movie.
Meet the Ocean’s Giants
Prepare yourself for breathtaking views. During their seasonal changes, humpback whales can breach within a few meters of your yacht off the coast of South Africa, Mozambique or Madagascar. You may even see massive whale sharks when strolling along the coastlines of Tanzania or the Seychelles. These peaceful, gigantic creatures glide by your boat like underwater skyscrapers. These moments will leave you speechless.
Dolphins, Otters, and Playful Pals
Featuring pods of spirited bottlenose or spinner dolphins leaping in unison and surfing the waves alongside your yacht off Namibia, Kenya, or Zanzibar, dolphins are the ultimate showstoppers. As you cruise by, don’t miss the majestic African fish eagles flying overhead, catching fish in Tanzania or Botswana, or the energetic otters flipping and splashing in wetlands. These are the experiences that make your journey unique, instead of just the scenery.
Colourful Reefs & Birdwatching Bliss
Underwater worlds filled with beautiful coral, intelligent fish, and starfish welcome you when you pause for a swim or snorkel in the Seychelles, Mozambique, or Zanzibar. The spectacular scene is made even better by the view of exotic seabirds, such as frigatebirds and pelicans, diving for fish from above. These ecosystems are vibrant and want to be explored.
The most memorable journeys appreciate the world of nature. You can see wildlife in its native habitat by exploring Africa’s protected marine areas like Watamu Marine National Park in Kenya, Seychelles Marine Protected Areas, or Namibia’s Marine Parks. In order to keep these waters as natural and unspoiled for future explorations, be a responsible explorer by remaining from animals, refraining from disturbing them, and participating in local conservation initiatives.
These waters present amazing animal experiences, whether you’re floating past Namibia’s fascinating Skeleton Coast, diving into the colourful reefs of the Seychelles, or exploring the beautiful coast of Mozambique. Dolphins jumping playfully next to your boat? Check. A massive whale breaching nearby? Double check. These memories will be with you forever.
So, what are you waiting for? Sail into the amazing and unexplored waterways of Africa, where adventure awaits you around every corner. Now is the time to embark on your ultimate marine wildlife trip!
