Orchards and vineyards thrive within a 10-minute drive from the downtown core and provide seasonal delights year round. You can pluck ripe cherries or juicy peaches from trees, or spend a delightful day sampling the award-winning wares of our internationally-acclaimed wineries. The Spring, Summer, and Fall Wine Festivals offer an abundance of activities focused on winemaking, tasting, and touring.

DOWNTOWN KELOWNA

Framed by Okanagan Lake and City Park, downtown is the vibrant and energetic hub of Kelowna. The waterfront boardwalk runs the length of downtown (2.2 km) and offers stunning scenery. Walk, run, or bike the boardwalk from the Rotary Marsh Bird Sanctuary (look out for osprey, turtles, and maybe even deer), past the bobbing boats in the marinas, all the way to City Park.

Trendy Bernard Avenue is the main street of downtown, and it’s jam packed with great restaurants and pubs, local coffee shops, and urban boutiques. In the summer months, Parks Alive! fills the air with live music at free, family-friendly concerts in the area’s parks.

DOWNTOWN’S NORTH END

This corner of town, which was once known primarily as an industrial area, has become a happening village with a community scene of its own. Welcome a slew of great new breweries and, boom, you’ve got a sexy, new destination for food and drink lovers! Within a couple of blocks, you’ll find six breweries, Sandhill Winery, and BC Tree Fruits Cider Co. PANDOSY VILLAGE

Pandosy Village, with its colourful and distinct architecture, has a quaint, charming feel, and the area is packed with small, locally-owned boutiques, quaint eateries, and cozy coffee shops. Stroll through its relaxed streets, grab a cup of joe at the funky Marmalade Cat Café, revel in some great retail therapy, or visit one of the local art galleries. With the beach just minutes away, taking a dip in the lake or enjoying the views make for a perfect end to the day.

Head towards Kelowna’s north end and you’ll find Rutland, a well-established

neighbourhood that is an up-and-coming hidden gem.

The 2019 Uptown Mural Project left behind a selection of amazing abstract and funky murals, all within a few blocks of each other near the Rutland Centennial Hall. This historic venue is also home to a modern-day flea market that takes place on Sundays year round, and where you can find everything from vintage clothing, to collectives, and artisan eats. Speaking of food, Rutland is home to some of the best ethnic cuisine in the city, from delicious savoury crepes at Dosa Crepe Café, to Greek delights at Olympia Greek Taverna, to the bold flavors of Latin Fiesta.

DISCOVER KELOWNA’S CULTURAL DISTRICT Kelowna’s growing Cultural District covers a six-block downtown area and features a concentration of galleries, museums, theatres, a casino, artists’ studios, fine dining, unique shops, and a vibrant cultural life all year long. Prospera Place, a 6,000-seat, multi-purpose facility that’s home to the Kelowna Rockets (Western Hockey League), attracts major entertainers and events, and is also located in the heart of the city.

During the summer, music lovers of all ages can enjoy open-air performances in parks throughout Kelowna and its surrounding communities. Spend an evening amongst the vineyards enjoying live music or take in Opera Kelowna’s annual Opera Under the Stars. Kids will have a blast at the Fat Cat Children’s Festival, while adults will be entertained by theatre companies from around the world at the Kelowna Fringe Festival.

When the grapevines and cherry trees blossom in spring, take a hike in one of Kelowna’s many parks. Knox Mountain, the John’s Family Nature Conservancy, and Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park all have easy trails with lake views. Children of all ages love visiting Kangaroo Creek Farm, where they’ll have the chance to hold a joey (baby ‘roo) in spring.

Families hit the lake when temperatures soar in summer.

Kelowna boasts more than 30 beaches for swimming and sandcastle building.

Some sandy spots, such as Tugboat Bay in downtown Kelowna and Boyce-Gyro Beach in Pandosy, have kayak, pedal boat, and other watercraft rentals available.

Be sure and hit a u-pick to pluck cherries, apricots, or peaches right from the tree.

Fall is harvest season and fruit stands are bursting with apples and pears. Walk or bike ride along the Mission Creek Greenway to see the salmon “running.” Or head to the hills for a high-altitude adventure—the Myra Canyon Trestles, part of the Kettle Valley Rail Trail, make a great hike or ride to see fall colours.

When the flakes fall, Kelowna turns into a winter wonderland. Ice skate at Stuart Park downtown, or try snowshoeing or cross-country skiing at a nearby nordic club. Less than an hour’s drive from downtown is Big White Ski Resort, a winter playground where parents and kids can go skiing, snowboarding,tubing, ice-skating, ice climbing, or even dog sledding.

PLAY INDOORS There’s a lot for families to do indoors, too. Swim at a local recreation centre, try an escape room or visit a museum. Kelowna’s compact downtown is easy to navigate in every season, with familyfriendly hotels, shops, and restaurants.

WINE COUNTRY Kelowna is smack in the middle of one of the world’s most exciting wine regions, acclaimed for its crisp whites, complex reds, and a growing number of organic winemakers. Add on spectacular lake and mountain views from many tasting rooms, and numerous winery bistros and restaurants that pair local, seasonal cuisine with their vintages, and you’ll agree Kelowna offers a wine tourism experience second to none.

Kelowna and its surrounding communities are home to over 40 wineries that range from family-owned boutique wineries to estate vineyards known for their art and architecture. Of historic note, BC’s oldest continually operating winery, Calona Vineyards, is located here, and the province’s original vines were planted in Kelowna. Wine has become part of the city’s fabric, and visitors can taste a range of varietals and blends—from single block Rieslings to Bordeaux-style

meritages—as they explore the unique wine trails.

Kelowna’s Southeast Bench has a rural, farm feel, and wineries here veer toward small, friendly, family-owned, and funky.

Travel past bucolic fields and orchards in pursuit of sparkling wine or Pinot Noir.

You’ll be charmed by The Vibrant Vine, featuring 3-D art and glasses, the annual family-friendly grape stomp at House of Rose, The View Winery, located inside a historic apple-packing house, and

Spearhead Winery, where you can taste a white pinot noir. Other surprises along this route include a honey wine meadery, two cider makers, and two distilleries.

The Lakeshore Wine Route winds south along Okanagan Lake, providing oenophiles with stunning views and spectacular wines to match. Here you’ll find some of the oldest vines and most established vineyards, with wineries making everything from old-vine Rieslings and buttery Chardonnays

WINE TOURS The best way to explore Kelowna’s wine routes is on a small-group tour.

Many companies run regular tours that visit four to five designated wineries and include lunch.

Or, customize a tour and visit wineries on your bucket list. You can also travel country roads to vineyards in a classic car, cycle between tastings on an e-bike, or splash out on a helicopter wine tour.

to organic red blends and robust Cabernet Francs.

There’s quirk too, including a pyramid at Summerhill Pyramid Winery, plus a few artsy surprises such as Indigenous masks at Tantalus Vineyards, and a stunning new tasting room at CedarCreek Estate Winery that brings the outdoors into the wine sampling experience.

Cross the William R. Bennett floating bridge to West Kelowna and explore the Westside Wine Trail, the city’s largest and most diverse wine route.

There’s a winery here to please every Millennial, GenXer and Boomer, and a wine style to suit their palettes, from dry Bruts to sweet late harvest Gewürztraminers.

Highlights include Indigenous World Winery, 100 per cent Indigenous-owned, Off The Grid Organic Winery with resident farm animals, and Mission Hill, an estate winery as famous for its sculptures and European architecture as its award-winning wines.

Travel north of the city to Lake Country and fall in love with the wineries along the Scenic Sip. Terroir tells the story here, with winemakers taking advantage of soil and vineyard aspect to create award-winning Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. The eight wineries along this route all boast valley or lake views, and many offer unique dining experiences, from full-service restaurants, to casual bistros serving wood-fired pizzas, to terrace wine tastings paired with elevated small bites.

Urban explorers can stay put in the Cultural District and visit Kelowna’s two downtown wineries on foot.

Make it an even more spirited outing by tacking on a cider tasting at BC Tree Fruits Cider Co., and one or two of the city’s numerous craft breweries, all located within walking distance of downtown hotels.

CRAFT SIPS In Kelowna, craft brewing has continued an upward trend that shows no sign of slowing. New brewers regularly join Kelowna’s beer community and collaborations among breweries create an inclusive and engaged brew culture. It’s this community that builds stellar beer experiences for all. Eager sippers will find producers who pour precisely hopped IPAs and experiment with ingredients and infusions found in Kelowna’s natural surroundings.

Kelowna’s most established craft brewers have been on the scene for nearly 20 years.

Freddy’s Brew Pub, home of the Lebowski Lager, is known for crafting smooth and approachable sips. Tree Brewing, a long-time local staple, upped their craft game when their Tree Brewing Beer Institute began to get creative with a tank-to-tap program pouring unfiltered brews.

The city’s Cultural District buzzes all season with new exhibits at museums and galleries, WHL hockey games at Prospera Place, live music at wineries and craft breweries, and plays and musicals at community theatres.

Comfort food abounds, too. Pop in to a cozy café for a cappuccino, sip a hearty stout at a craft brewery, or dig in to warming, seasonal fare at one of the many restaurants and tapas bars in the core. Speaking of wine, consider winter wine touring. Many of the wineries have tasting rooms that are open all season and pour everything from crisp Pinot Auxerrois to complex Zweigelt. It’s an opportunity to sample award-winning wines in a casual setting with fewer crowds—you might even meet the winemaker!

Let someone else do the driving on wine tours that explore Kelowna’s wine routes. Choose four or five wineries to visit in a region— Kelowna’s Southeast Bench, the Lakeshore Wine Route, the Westside Wine Trail in West Kelowna, or the Scenic Sip in Lake Country—then sit back and enjoy the pleasant scenery of snow-dusted vineyards perched high above Okanagan Lake. While touring, don’t miss a chance to sample Icewine, a sweet style of dessert wine made from wine grapes that have frozen on the vine. This coveted wine is unique to Canada and available to sample at a number of wineries.

At higher elevations that are a short drive from town you’ll find winter in its full glory with activities to match.

Big White Ski Resort sets the bar for outdoor adventures in snow. Canada’s largest totally ski-in ski-out village makes it easy for skiers and snowboarders to access downhill terrain covered in that trademark Okanagan Champagne

Powder. There are easy runs for beginners, gentle forested glades for intermediates, groomed cruisers for speed demons, and knee-knocking steeps in high alpine bowls for the expert set. There’s plenty for non-riders to do, too. The Happy Valley Adventure Centre at the bottom of the gondola is your base for ice-skating, tubing, ice climbing, dog sledding, and sleigh rides.

Big White also has a network of multi-use trails for snowshoers, fat bikers, and nordic skiers. Closer to town, Telemark Nordic Club in West Kelowna and the Kelowna Nordic Ski and Snowshoe Club on Hwy 33 are two more spots where you can step into snowshoes or click into skinny skis for winter fun.

FAT BIKING TAKES OFF Fat biking—mountain biking on wide winter tires—has taken off in Kelowna too. In MyraBellevue Provincial Park there are 155-km of multi-use trails that wind through a pine forest past ancient rock outcrops. Depending on the amount of white stuff, you might be able to just hike the paths instead! Guaranteed snow pack can be found higher up at the Myra Canyon Trestles, part of the Kettle Valley Rail Trail. You can also explore terrain at our local ski resorts on fat bike–both Big White and SilverStar offer fat bike rentals.

HIKING & BIKING If you’re looking for some of Kelowna’s best hiking, there are four trails that stand out for spectacular vistas and/or abundance of flora, fauna, and geological formations. Here’s the list.

Knox Mountain is a pinnacle of downtown Kelowna, and a paradise for hikers, runners, and photographers. With steep ascents in spots, it’s 4.34 km to the top, where hikers are welcomed by panoramic views of Kelowna, West Kelowna, and Okanagan Lake. Rating: Easy to Difficult

Bear Creek Falls trail in Bear Creek Provincial Park is an easy trail along a canyon rim for 2.6 km. Along the way, hikers admire the local flora and beautiful views of the creek and waterfalls below.

Angel Springs, via KLO Creek, provides hikers with an 11.6 km (round-trip) trail through lush forest. During the first part of the trek, hikers can admire canyon views and geological formations. The springs are heated geothermally and identifiable by tufa deposits created by crystallization of calcite. Rating: Moderate

The mountain biking terrain near Kelowna serves up challenges for both experts and novices. There is urban biking, easy-to-reach single track, off-road trails, and skills parks. Travel through pine forests or wide sub-desert spaces. Catch air with dramatic downhill runs. The rides are epic and breathtaking views make the journey worth it alone.

Single-track trails that run from pine-treed mountains wind through sagebrush paths down to a sandy beach – the terrain is as varied as the speeds you can choose to cover it. There are many great trails in and around Kelowna for mountain biking.

Mount Boucherie, emerging 800 meters above West Kelowna, offers several different trails to the summit. The Eain Lamont Loop provides a moderate, 5.57 km path up the mountain. Once at the summit, hikers enjoy 360degree views of Okanagan Valley and Okanagan Lake.

MYRA CANYON TRESTLES Kelowna is home to one of Canada’s incredible, man-made wonders – the Myra Canyon trestles.

Originally built between 1912 and 1914 as part of the Kettle Valley Railway, this 12 km section through Myra Canyon includes 18 restored trestle bridges, and two tunnels. Today, this highly-scenic landmark is experienced by over 75,000 visitors annually.

The Myra Canyon Trestles, designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 2002, is a section of the historic Kettle Valley Railway (KVR) located in MyraBellevue Provincial Park.

Constructed at the turn of the century, it was considered a truly outstanding feat of railway engineering. In order for the KVR to pass through Myra Canyon, 18 wooden trestle bridges and two tunnels had to literally be built by hand, creating a visuallystunning and unforgettable landmark which runs along a steep-walled canyon.

GETTING THERE Myra Canyon is located only 24 km from downtown Kelowna (40-minute drive to Myra Station). This scenic drive will take you past farms, orchards, vineyards, and golf courses. KELOWNA PADDLE TRAIL Explore this 27-km shoreline trail on Okanagan Lake from McKinley Beach to Bertram Creek Regional Park. Let the buoys be your guide as you paddle by 20+ beaches and parks, downtown Kelowna, three waterfront resorts, and two bird sanctuaries.

Paddle part of the trail or test your stamina and explore the whole trail, it’s up to you, but be sure to bring a waterproof camera to snap the beautiful sights from the water.

Nearby parks such as Knox Mountain and Myra-Bellevue are laced with multi-use trails for hikers and mountain bikers.

Out on the water, the Kelowna Paddle Trail entices kayakers and stand-up paddle boarders to explore 27 km of shoreline along Okanagan Lake.
