CHALLENGES AHEAD ‌

T

he world is rapidly changing in almost all aspects and as more countries enter in the race of global Tourism, advanced economies have recognized the growth opportunity in Tourism Industry and have already begun competing more strongly with all their resources. Tourism markets have changed dramatically in recent years and over the past decade, tourism has continued to grow, at an annual rate of around 4%. Tourism is a phenomenon of wealth the more money people have, the more likely they are to travel. As the world becomes wealthier, demand for tourism also increases. Even though the tourism sector gains increased importance for the economic development of countries around the world as the Largest Industry and the sector is undergoing significant growth worldwide, driven by high demand from emerging countries. Now a day’s experiencing the severe adverse impacts of Tourism is on cards around the globe. In most countries, the institutional framework in which Tourism operates is still very complex. A regulatory framework with strong guidelines for tourism is the need of the hour in Tourism Industry. The absence of an ideal regulatory framework always makes the monitoring and regulating of tourism a difficult task. It is high time to establish and implement concrete regulations which have given importance to the socio-cultural, environmental and economic dimensions with safeguards to ensure the sustainability of Tourism. Since Tourism sustainability happens only with the continued involvement and integration

of all stakeholders who benefit Tourism. Every time this process will be a challenge to the Governments either central or state and are often hesitant even to acknowledge the real picture. Through Empowering local self-government institutions to be the pillars of democracy, enforcement of the code of ethics, action against violators and micro level destination management strategies with social audit can aid to ensure sustainable tourism. It is Important the reorientation processes achieve sustainability in tourism should be in the right track and all stakeholders should have the willpower to practice with models of Sustainable Tourism. As the curtain of 2018 falls and time for resolutions for better tomorrows it is the apt time for Tourism Industry players to think and about How might we map tourism needs of a destination in terms of Infrastructure and marketing, accommodation, transportation, attraction and adopt new strategies to achieve Tourism sustainability. Tourism is a tough, complex, multidimensional and highly competitive industry and since we all are aligning behind a common goal, each of us can work together to overcome the particular obstacles which the Industry face. We should have to do market research with an eye and to focus on revenue, rather than visitor numbers. With the curtains of 2018 on its last glimpses, on behalf of everyone here at Tourism India Publications.

I Wish you all a very productive &

Happy New Year 2019! Rajani A, Executive Editor

R

esponsible Tourism units honoured for remarkable contributions The second phase activities of project ‘PEPPER’ (People’s Participation for Participatory Planning and Empowerment through Responsible Tourism) that ensures local participation in tourism development will be extended to 12 new centres across the state, said Tourism Minister Mr Kadakampally Surendran here on Saturday.

RESPONSIBLE TOURISM UNITS HONOURED FOR REMARKABLE CONTRIBUTIONS

“An initiative by Responsible Tourism Mission (RT), ‘PEPPER’ will be implemented in two local self government institutions at Vaikkom in Kottayam district and 10 other centres this month,” the Minister said. Mr Surendran was inaugurating a function organised to felicitate RT Mission units, which have become a major instrument for providing benefits of travel and hospitality to the common people and also stood solidly behind the authorities during the recent calamitous floods.

Farmers, handicrafts makers, artists, entrepreneurs of farm-stays as well as home-stays and tour guides who are either directly or indirectly part of the RT Mission were given away certificates by the Minister at the function. Noting that RT Mission is vital component of tourism, the minister said through the various units of RT Mission, 27,470 people directly and 43,952 people indirectly have benefited. “After setting up the RT Mission in July 2017, the income generated by the units registered with RT Mission stood at Rs 5.35 crore between August 2017 and October 2018. Meanwhile, the recent flood has played its part from preventing the income going up,” he pointed out. “RT Mission has implemented 477 packages in one year and around 30,422 tourists reached selected villages of Kerala through these packages. As a result, the traditional workers of the villages could earn an income of Rs 48 lakh,” the Minister added. On the occasion, the Minister also unveiled the E-brochure of RT Mission. State RT Mission coordinator Mr K Rupeshkumar presented a report. Mr K Muraleedharan, MLA, in his presidential address, remarked that hartals in the state have become a curse for tourism sector and all parties should agree to pass a state law to curb it. Mr E M Najeeb, member of National Tourism Advisory Council; Mr P K Anish Kumar, Member, Kerala Tourism Advisory Committee; Mr M Reghudasan, Additional Director, Hospitality, Tourism were also present.

RT, which has 11,532 units under it, has carried out an array of projects over the last one year with poverty alleviation, women empowerment and local area development as its major objectives. The RT Mission’s initiatives have already fetched Kerala Tourism several international recognitions, including the maiden gold medal at the prestigious World Travel Market (WTM) in London earlier this month.

GUIDELINES FOR APPROVAL OF ONLINE TRAVEL AGGREGATORS THE SCHEME IS EXPECTED TO SET STANDARDS TOWARDS ACCREDITATION.

A

voluntary scheme for approval / re-approval of OTAs will be rolled out on the common online platform. The Ministry of Tourism have formulated the guidelines for approval /re-approval of Online Travel Aggregators (OTA’s) to ensure that there are adequate safeguards against deficiency of service, alternate arrangements if needed and punitive deterrence. . The scheme is expected to set standards towards accreditation and add value to the dependability and reliability to the aggregators in the online space operating in the organized tourism sector. In the recent past, several Online Travel Aggregators (OTA) who are aggregating rooms in the various accommodation segments have been emerged. The B&B / Homestay segment has always suffered from inadequate marketing owing to the small scale of business. The emergence of OTAs can galvanise this segment and emerge as a game changer. An Online Travel Aggregator (OTA) is an intermediary / agent selling travel products and services such as 20

the airlines, car rental, cruise lines, Hotels / Accommodation, railways and vacation packages on behalf of suppliers using internet as a medium. They establish an online market place and earn profits on the discounts commonly referred to as commission offered by the suppliers. There are several players in the OTA segment operating now without any accreditation / validation. One of the risks of letting the market operate unhindered is that unscrupulous players can vitiate the entire market through unethical trade practices. In order to engage with the OTAs constructively, it is imperative that a system is put in place with qualitative benchmarks to accredit them. The paramount concern would be the assurance of quality of service delivery for the customer by the OTA. According to the guidelines The recognition as an approved OTA shall be granted by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, for five years, based on the Inspection Report / Recommendations of a Committee comprising the concerned Regional Director (RD), a representative of

I

ndia’s foray into the world of mountain biking is still relatively fresh and unsaturated, and the fifth edition of the International Mountain Bike Challenge (MTB Kerala) organized by the initiative of the Kerala Tourism and Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society (KATPS) in association with District Tourism Promotion Council Wayanad, The Cycling Federation of India (CFI) and Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) providing technical support. The race made its mark in Indian MTB history on December 7th and 8th 2018. Held at Priyadarshini Tea Estate at Pancharakolly near Mananthavady in

Wayanad, the race bought many riders from within the country and even a few international participants. The Kerala Minister of Tourism, Mr. Kadakampally Surendran, inaugurated the valedictory function and distributed the prizes in the presence of Mr. Ramachandran Kadannappalli, Minister for ports who presided over the function. On the track inside the Priyadarshini Tea Estate, it wasn’t just speed that mattered in the end, it was endurance. And Endurance was what the Iranian duo of Faraz Shokri and ParvizMardani had more of than anything else. There had been dozens of races in the past with equal or even higher pressure and

Mr. P.P. Pramod IFS, Director, Eco Tourism, Kerala, flagging off the 5th edition of MTB Kerala in the presence of Mr. Umesh IAS, Sub Collector, Manathavady, Mr. Onkar Singh, Secretary General, Cycling Fedderation of India and Mr. Manesh Bhaskar, CEO of KATPS

build-up. Faraz’s performances at the Yalova Cup or the 18th Asian Games are highly noted, among more than a dozen other races in his career. Races in brimming-over tracks, pedaling for limb, life, and national championships. But it is impossible to stir the apparent simplicity of the track, located in one of Kerala’s most densely vegetated districts. The track was simple enough according to Australia’s team members, a lot of downs and a few ups. Nothing to shake the average seasoned MTB rider, especially Faraz, One of Iran’s national cycling champions. By the end of 7 laps, shaken he was not. Breezing past most of the competition for the entire race. Faraz’s endurance could

not be beaten as he pressed on and conquered the 4.2km rough terrain of the Priyadarshini hill slopes, which go as high as 3,000ft above sea level. Finishing at 1:43:09, Shokri got his win while his counterpart Mardani came close behind at 1:44:42 to bag second place and AdisakTailangkha of Thailand finished afterward with the bronze. Beyond the international category, there were two other categories as well, including the Mens’ national cross country and national women’s category. Kiran Kumar Raju of Karnataka came first in the National Cross Country event for Men category, clocking in at 1:58:23 followed by Devender Kumar December 2018 Tourism India

from Himachal Pradesh in Silver and Shiven of Himachal Pradesh at Bronze. Pranitha Soman of Maharashtra won in the national women’s’ category while participants from the host state Lidiya M Sunny and A P Sayi bagged silver and bronze medals respectively. In essence, what made MTB Kerala an event to remember was not just the event itself but the praise the track received from the riders, a pearl of opportunity in the area with great landscapes and solid conditions to make for a tough race. Everything

else balances out, more or less, even the precious few mistakestransportation for workers at the tea estate, plus the relatively undeveloped and intact vegetation, the only work being the track in itself. There was an unending channel of praise from both winners that simply encouraged the organizers to continue forward this event annually, with next year expecting the race to be officially on the UCI Tour Map and that is a huge deal in Mountain bike racing.

The eight-day cycling tour (December 9 to 16, 2018) will take cyclists through breath taking terrain, offering a myriad of natural sightings across different topography including plains, coffee & tea plantations, three wild life sanctuaries and mountains. The cyclists will get to taste the unique regional cuisines each region has to offer and capture in their lens the beauty of Nilgiris Biosphere as they

pedal across the rolling terrain. “Tour of Nilgiris epitomizes ‘Experiencing Nature through Cycle’ and TfN 2018 will be no different. The tour gives cyclists an opportunity to not only experience nature but also test their endurance as pedalling the chosen terrain is a task by itself,” said co-founder of RAC-F Deepak Majipatil. Further, he said, TfN, over the years has evolved as a training ground for budding cyclists to hone their skills in the presence of international cyclists. “The ever growing participation of international cyclists clearly points to fact that TfN has obtained the recognition of cycling community and

29 INTERNATIONAL RIDERS FROM 13 COUNTRIES AND 17 WOMEN CYCLISTS TO PEDAL TFN 2018 AROUND NILGIRIS BIOSPHERE RESERVE ACROSS KARNATAKA, KERALA & TAMILNADU

found a place on the global cycling calendar. Likewise, in the domestic circuit, Tour of Nilgiris is hailed as mother of all tours which offers cyclists the experience they crave for,” he added. Every edition of TfN has etched a memory in riders’ mind and they crave to come back to experience nature. Besides Indian cyclists, more and more of overseas cyclists are keen to visit India to pedal in this grand tour. There are 7 cyclists from Denmark, while 4 from the US, 3 each from Australia, Germany & UK, 2 each from Belgium & Canada and one each from Austria, Greece, Malaysia, Philippines and Poland complete the international representation. This year the tour has

attracted not only record international riders, but also 17 women cyclists both from India and abroad, he added. From a humble beginning TfN has come a long way and has emerged as the largest & most loved bike tours in India that has put India on the global cycling map. Also over the years, TfN has triggered passion amongst enthusiasts to pursue cycling as an extreme sport with an adventure quotient. In tune with eminence of the tour, celebrity cyclists including Kiran Kumar Raju, current India MTB Champion and Naveen John, current India Road champion will pedal TfN 2018. Alexi Grewal - an Indian American to win an Olympic Gold Medal in road cycling in 1984

- enamoured having pedalled TfN 2017, is volunteering in this edition to mentor young talented riders who are using TfN as a platform to achieve bigger goals cycling has to offer globally. Another dimension of TfN is that few riders are keen to make their pedals count by giving something back to the society and they ride TfN for a cause as charity riders. This year ‘Charity Riders’ will be pedalling for the following organizations - Kenneth Anderson Nature Society; Sita Bhateja Speciality Hospital; Iksha Foundation and Vidyodaya School, among others – to support their respective social cause.

TRAVEL MANAGERS REVEAL CONFUSION AND CONCERN ABOUT NDC 218 CORPORATE TRAVEL MANAGERS WORLDWIDE RESPONDED.

A

new study, The Evolution of Air Distribution by ACTE Global (Association of Corporate Travel Executives) developed in collaboration with American Express Global Business Travel (GBT) reveals that New Distribution Capability (NDC) promises both benefits and potential challenges for corporate travel programmes, The study explores travel managers’ experiences and attitudes toward

30

Tourism India December 2018

changes in air distribution, including NDC – a technology programme developed to standardise API (application programming interface) distribution. Travel managers expect some benefit from NDC, with 64% saying it could improve the booking experience and 56% believing it could help contract negotiations with airlines. However, the majority of travel managers fear that fragmentation created by NDC could threaten cost control (89%), policy compliance

(87%) and duty of care (77%). Fragmentation is already occurring because of airline ancillary purchasing, with almost half of travel managers (49%) saying travellers buy out-ofpolicy ancillaries from airline websites “some of the time.” This leakage from corporate online booking tools (OBTs) is a direct consequence of airlines unbundling fares into paid-for components such as baggage fees and seat selection, hindering the traveller booking experience and preventing travel managers from gaining full visibility on air spend. New air distribution models are ushering in fundamental changes to the way airlines sell services – but impact on the corporate travel sector remains unclear. Travel managers worry that NDC will undermine their programmes. Various concerns about incorporating NDC-enabled content into existing policies include: 90%

of travel managers expressed their concern about reduced functionality of the OBT unbundling leading to higher costs (89%); lack of availability of data (88%); and reduced fare transparency (88%). Travel managers are also concerned that NDC will negatively impact policy compliance (87%). “When it comes to NDC, the biggest unknown is whether travel managers will be able to maintain visibility into costs and traveller behavior. But they cannot afford to wait to address the issue,” said Koch. “Travel managers must evaluate their policies and technology now so that they’re prepared for the potential disruption. If caught on the back foot, they will be left grappling with a more fragmented, less safe and, ultimately, less effective programme.” “We continue to advocate the greatest consolidation of content, across all booking channels, to best meet customer and traveller expectations, while controlling both programme management cost and booking processing fees. NDC has tremendous potential, and GDSs are moving towards readiness and NDC compliance, so it will be key to ensure airlines then fully utilize these comprehensive, efficient and NDCready channels,” said Qualantone. “Travel managers should educate themselves on NDC, evaluate options with their TMCs, and ensure suppliers do not use NDC to add booking processing costs or limit access to content. Meanwhile, they should look at fortifying travel policies to control cost and compliance while striving to keep travellers productive, safe and happy.” “Airlines have had to contend with proliferating traveller demands for decades, ranging from a preference for low fares to the desire for constant connectivity while in the air,” said Greeley Koch, executive director, ACTE Global. “NDC is a response to these

ACTE GLOBAL AND AMERICAN EXPRESS GLOBAL BUSINESS TRAVEL REVEALS TRAVEL MANAGERS’ UNCERTAINTY ABOUT NEW DISTRIBUTION CAPABILITY. market forces and could make for better traveller experiences through personalisation. But it has come at cost to travel managers, who are now scrambling to figure out how to maintain control of their programmes if NDC becomes the norm.” “Travel managers need comprehensive access to air content in a scalable, transparent and costeffective way, to properly serve travellers’ needs and businesses’ purposes,” added Mike Qualantone, executive vice president of Global Supplier Relations for American Express GBT. “We fully embrace NDC as a positive sign that airlines want to standardise distribution. However, our primary responsibility is to our clients and their travellers, and we have questions and concerns on how airlines will use NDC as opposed to its potential and promise. NDC alone is not a silver bullet. As an industry, we must find more ways to deliver full content access and an improved experience while maintaining service, comparability and functionality.” A total of 218 corporate travel managers worldwide (Americas, 60%; EMEA, 28%; APAC, 12%) responded to the survey. his is Burma and it is unlike any land you know about – wrote by Rudyard Kipling. Today after over a century after he wrote this quote, Myanmar retains the power to surprise and delight the travellers. Myanmar was known as Burma prior to 1989; the name was changed during the Military rule. In the year 2015, Myanmar got its first Democratic governor in more than half a sanctuary. Myanmar consists of over 100 ethnic groups bordering India, Bangladesh, China, Laos and Thailand. Tourism India December 2018

Once the democratic government took charge of the country, the country has seen international investors interested to do business in Myanmar. Myanmar has also seen social and economic changes since the new government took over. Modern travel conveniences such as mobile phone coverage with internet access, domestic flights connecting tourist places, modern hotels are now getting common. The new Myanmar is very much a work in progress country.

Old World Charm of Myanmar

Myanmar consists of multiple ethnic groups and even today Myanmar does remain a rural nation of traditional values. Local men will be seen wearing a Longyi – like a sarong and chewing betel nut and spitting the red juice on the ground, women are seen with faces covered with thanakha (a natural sunblock) and cheroot-smoking ladies. Drinking tea is very common and tea houses serving traditional savouries and tea are seen all over the place. Myanmar – is rich with over 2,600 years of Buddhist civilization and posses many golden treasures across the country. Myanmar offers different

travel option for different travellers from a rich cultural and historical experience with golden temples and pagodas in Yangon and Mandalay to vestiges of Bagan or a spectacular sunrise & sunset in Bagan or Mandalay. Temples of Myanmar are distinct in design and patterns and temples or relics combine with spectacular surrounding scenery will leave an unforgettable impression of the rich and spiritual life leads by the locals. Inle Lake offers extraordinary leisure along with a rich insight of local life and floating villages, floating gardens and markets. The Inle Lake also connects to some of the famous

trekking routes or one can Drift down the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River in an old steamer or luxury cruiser or visit a beach on the blissful Bay of Bengal. Trek through pine forests to minority villages scattered across the Shan Hills offer a true glimpse of the local life of the Myanmar villages. Thankfully, the pace of change is not overwhelming and has left the simple pleasures of travel in Myanmar intact. Best of all, you'll encounter locals who are gentle, humorous, inquisitive and

passionate. Now is the time to make that connection. Jay Kantawala from WIYO Travel visited Myanmar in May / June 18 and felt that people are by far the best part of Burma; he was welcomed with smiles and kindness everywhere he visited. Now is the best time to travel to Myanmar as the new democratic government is working hard to improve the country’s image and uplift tourism. Myanmar today remains one of the world’s mysterious and untouched destinations.
