ew Trends come and go in all walks of life every year but 2021 is set to be one of tourism’s most significant years to date and travel looks a little different than pre-pandemic years. As the hardest hit sector by Covid 19 pandemic and still remains in survival mode with many challenges ahead and the outlook remains highly uncertain in the Tourism sector, but the vaccines bring hopes for recovery. The recovery of international tourism requires global co-operation and continued government support to cushion the blow to tourism. It is the right time to take advantage of new technologies and better environment-friendly business practices that are stronger, fairer, and more sustainable models of tourism development. Tourism is a complex system consisting of multiplex networks and also an open system that exchanges material, energy, with its environment. Millions of components interact with each other in the local networks in various layers globally. Destinations that heavily depend on international tourism are struggling while Domestic tourism has restarted and eased the impact in some destinations. The opportunities to encourage innovation and new business models, explore new markets, new destinations, paves the way to move to more sustainable and resilient tourism development models. The tourist’s attitudes have been changed significantly after the pandemic. Personal hygiene and sanitation are now being given priority. Tourists prefer to www.tourismindia.org

Drive-outs, long weekends and short vacations, are the preferred options for families and youngsters. No doubt that If we deny climate change and keep exploiting mother nature, animals, and ecosystems, then we should have to pay the price eventually. COVID-19 is most likely originated as the other side of the coin of our exotic/luxury food consumption culture. Other viruses and disasters that can easily eradicate7human beings as if we have never lived are not so far. Human beings should always be aware that we are also part of this Universe and not faster than time and bigger than space. TOURISM BACK TO 1990 LEVELS UNWTO expects international arrivals to decline by 70% to 75% for the whole of 2020. In this case, global tourism will have returned to levels of 30 years ago, with 1 billion fewer arrivals and a loss of some US$ 1.1 trillion in international tourism receipts

T

he unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global tourism has been revealed in the latest tourism data from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Since the start of this crisis, International arrivals fell by 72% over the first ten months of 2020, with restrictions on travel, low consumer confidence, and a global struggle to contain the COVID-19 virus, all contributing to the worst year on record in the history of tourism. According to the tourism data from UNWTO, destinations welcomed 900 million fewer international tourists between January and October when compared with the same period of 2019. This translates into a loss of US$ 935 billion in export revenues from international tourism, more than 10 times the loss in 2009 under the impact of the global economic crisis. UNWTO Secretary-General Mr. 10

Zurab Pololikashvili said: “Since the start of this crisis, UNWTO has provided governments and businesses with trusted data showing the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global tourism. Even as the news of a vaccine boosts traveller confidence, there is still a long road to recovery. We thus need to step up our efforts to safely open borders while supporting tourism jobs and businesses. It is ever clearer that tourism is one of the most affected sectors by this unprecedented crisis.” Based on the current evidence, UNWTO expects international arrivals to decline by 70% to 75% for the whole of 2020. In this case, global tourism will have returned to levels of 30 years ago, with 1 billion fewer arrivals and a loss of some US$ 1.1 trillion in international tourism receipts. This massive drop in tourism due to the pandemic could result in an economic loss of US$ 2 trillion in

world GDP.

Travel restrictions continue to weigh on the recovery

Asia and the Pacific, the first region to suffer the impact of the pandemic and the one with the highest level of travel restrictions to date, saw an 82% decrease in arrivals in the first ten months of 2020. The Middle East recorded a 73% decline, while Africa saw a 69% drop. International arrivals in both Europe and the Americas declined by 68%. Europe recorded smaller decreases of 72% and 76% in September and October compared to other world regions, following the slight though the short-lived recovery in the summer peak months of July and August. The resurgence of the virus across the region has led to the reintroduction of some forms of travel restrictions. However, Europe is the region in which more destinations (91% as of 1 November


2020) have eased such restrictions, mainly among the Schengen Member States. At the other end of the spectrum, Asia and the Pacific continued to record declines of nearly 100% in September and October, reflecting the ongoing closure of borders in China and other major destinations in the region. The Americas has seen a gradual improvement since June with comparatively lower decreases in international arrivals through October. This reflects the reopening

of many destinations in the region, including small island developing states in the Caribbean. Secretary-General Pololikashvili adds: “A coordinated approach to easing and lifting restrictions on travel whenever is it safe to do so is essential. This will not only open destinations up to tourism again, but clear and consistent rules between countries will go a long way towards building back trust in international travel and boosting consumer confidence.” Data on international tourism

expenditure continues to reflect a very weak demand for outbound travel. However, some large markets such as the United States, Germany, and France have shown some signs of recovery in recent months. Furthermore, demand for domestic tourism continues to grow in some markets, including both China and Russia. The announcement of a vaccine and the start of vaccination are expected to gradually increase consumer confidence

WTTC MENTAL HEALTH GUIDELINES TO AID THE RECOVERY OF TRAVEL & TOURISM Investment in mental health promotes good business and greater profitability

T

he World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has launched its new mental health guidelines for the Travel & Tourism sector, which have been compiled to support businesses of all sizes to support the mental health of their employees. The Mental Health Guidelines build on the Diversity & Inclusion Guidelines released by WTTC in 2020, going one step deeper to focus on mental wellbeing. It will help businesses better prepare for the recovery period following 12

the COVID-19 crisis, and will ensure that as the sector rebuilds, it comes back stronger and better than before. The guidelines come at a time when mental health could not be more important. Research from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) showed that more than one in 10 people (95%) feel that poor mental health affects their performance at work, while 85% say it is difficult to concentrate when struggling with poor mental

health, and 64% feel that it takes them longer to complete tasks. Furthermore, research conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed a US$4 return in improved health and productivity, for every US$1 investment in improved treatment for common mental disorders. Developing a Supportive System , Creating Safe Spaces , Supporting an Agile System , Exemplifying Support for Good Mental Health are the four pillars of Mental Health Guidelines.

After nearly a full year of insecurity and hardship that has come from the COVID-19 pandemic, the time could not be more appropriate to invest in the mental well-being of this sector. “Furthermore, throughout its very nature, the Travel & Tourism sector is one that brings joy to people of all walks of life, therefore it makes perfect sense for the sector to reflect these val-

Association of Domestic Tour Operators of India to hold its annual convention in Kevadiya in Gujarat from Feb 12-14, 2021 with a theme DOMESTIC TOURISM – HOPE FOR THE REVIVAL

A

ssociation of Domestic Tour Operators of India has announced its management committee’s decision to hold their 10th annual convention from February 12-14, 2021 at Kevadia in Gujarat with the support of Gujarat Tourism, that could be a major catalyst to restart and revitalise the ailing travel and tourism industry in the country, which is in the death bed after an yearlong global and national lockdown due to COVID 19 pandemic and related travel restrictions. Theme of this year’s convention is “DOMESTIC TOURISM – HOPE FOR THE REVIVAL. According to Mr. PP Khanna, President, ADTOI, the State of Gujarat has always been on front foot to promote its tourism potential and in current times they are moving fast to revive and stabilize tourism. ADTOI has been supporting Tourism in Gujarat with all out endeavor to promote destinations in the State since long. Apart from extending support to all our Annual Conventions in the past has also hosted our Convention in 2019 held in Ahmedabad now 16

in Kevadia at Tent City. Our team has started working on it and expected to put up a grand show. We expect the presence of about 400 plus delegates during the Convention which will be grandly inaugurated on 12th February 2021 in the evening at Convention Hall, Kevadia. And after a great break it is happening, people are moving out of their homes alone or with family for their social needs and by the grace of God tourism is reviving at destinations more during weekdays/festivities and it is going to bounce back in the days to come. We all should be prepared to cater to the needs of people willing to take a holiday or for business and fulfil social commitments. The Convention will have Business Sessions, Product Presentation, Cultural programs besides facility for better connectivity for all to visit this destination. Kevadia, which has quickly become the pulsating destination and is growing rapidly in popularity as well as complete tourism destination for everyone. Statue of unity has already achieved enormous count as far as numbers of tourists who have already visited the destination and it’s amazing to watch the count keep on increasing with each passing day. Kevadia and Statue of Unity is the brain child of Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India and he personally supervised the each and every development of the region. Prime Minister launched a seaplane service between Sabarmati riverfront in Ahmedabad to Statue of Unity to boost the connectivity to Kevadia

ern and Central Region that the Ministry of Tourism has planned to conduct since the Covid–19 outbreak was inaugurated by Ms. Rupinder Brar , Additional Director General, Ministry of Tourism . This roadshow featured fruitful engagement between tour operators from Maharashtra and Goa. This event was one

of the series of roadshows being organized in the Ministry of Tourism’s Mumbai Office ( Western & Central Region) . Maharashtra Tour Operators delegation consisted of 15 tour operators who drove into Goa to experience the Road travel which is now gaining popularity as travel is unlocking across the


country. 30 members of Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) participated in the roadshow. Delivering keynote address, Additional Director General Rupinder Brar spoke about how Domestic tourism, when developed in a meaningful, sustainable and complementary way to international tourism, offers India an exceptional platform for year-round tourism. Se said “ This would mean a relentless determination to drive up quality, whether accommodation, hospitality or customer service.” She also spoke about the several initiatives being taken by Ministry of Tourism in rebooting the tourism sector and the Dekho Apna Desh Campaign and the famed Dekho Apna Desh Webinar Series. Mr. J. Ashok Kumar, Secretary (Tourism), Govt. of Goa informed about the release of new Tourism policy of Goa in November, 2020 which aims on shifting from Coastal to Hinterland Tourism in the State. MADHYA PRADESH SIGNS PACT WITH KERALA TO REPLICATE RESPONSIBLE TOURISM K

erala’s famed Responsible Tourism (RT) found another state officially emulating the pioneering initiative, as Madhya Pradesh has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state for implementation of the Kerala model, which involves local communities and makes tourism a tool for rural development. The two states signed a joint declaration under which Kerala will extend a series of services under a 16-point programme. Mr. Surendran said Responsible Tourism is the “only tool for sustainable development of tourism” as it creates better places for people to live in and visit. “RT takes the responsibility of the economic well-being of society. It ensures social and cultural stability besides environmental protection,” he noted, terming the pact with Madhya Pradesh as “another milestone” for Kerala Tourism and its RT Mission. Mr. Surendran said Kerala did not have a practical model to follow or replicate when it launched RT. Today, the Mission has more than 20,000 units comprising

small-scale entrepreneurs, artists, craftspeople, traditional workers, farmers and other service providers. “They are local communities at the grassroots, linked directly or indirectly with tourism,” he added. “The RT Mission’s projects earned Kerala’s tourist map several micro destinations. It has, during its function since October 2017, generated an income of Rs 35 crores amid disruptions owing to Nipah, two floods and now Covid -19.” Ms Thakur said she was overwhelmed by the way the tradition, culture and heritage of Kerala is being preserved here.


She pointed out that with the help of RT Mission of Kerala, the rustic beauty, life and heritage of Madhya Pradesh could be highlighted on the world tourism map. “There are several tribes like Bhil, Sahariya and Gond living in our state, and we want to showcase their traditional value, attire and food habits to the entire country and outside word with Kerala’s assistance. India is a country of villages and its soul lies in the villages. We want to show it to the world with your cooperation, she added.” Ms. Rani George IAS, Secretary – Tourism, Kerala said the success of RT in Kerala has always been the public and private partnership. “Community should be benefitted and empowered through RT. So it’s high time other states thought about embracing RT,” she said, adding that a team from Kerala will be visiting Madhya Pradesh as part of this collaboration.

Kerala can also learn a lot from Madhya Pradesh. Mr. K Rupeshkumar, Kerala RT Mission coordinator said Madhya Pradesh can become a champion in RT sector with the support of Kerala, which has already set a model in RT in the world. Ms Sonia Meena, Deputy Secretary and Additional Managing Director of Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, gave a presentation on the proposed RT activities in the central Indian state. The MoU entrusts Kerala RT Mission with the task of implementing RT projects in Madhya Pradesh in ways that suit that state. Kerala will help Madhya Pradesh chart its RT masterplan, ready the human resources to implement the project, conduct training projects, list the criteria for the formation of district tourism promotion councils, locate sustained tourism projects so as to carry out RT projects, formulate social and economic security measures, help in gradation of hotels, resorts and homestays, form tourism clubs and restrooms on lines of Kerala’s RT

he Ministry of Tourism, Government of India runs the “Adopt a Heritage: Apni Dharohar, Apni Pehchaan” project which is a collaborative effort by the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Culture, Archaeological Survey of India and State/ UTs Government for developing tourism amenities at heritage/ natural/ tourist sites spread across India for making them tourist friendly, in a planned and phased manner. Mr. Prahlad Singh Patel, Minister of State for Tourism and Culture (I/C) took a review meeting of the “Adopt a Heritage: Apni Dharohar, Apni Pehchaan” project in New Delhi. A detailed presentation was given about the present status and progress at various monuments. Mr. Prahlad Singh Patel laid emphasis on timely completion of projects and asked the officials to review the amenities proposed under the MoUs in discussion with the nodal departments from time to time. They would also look after the Operation & Maintenance of the same. Reed Travel Exhibitions, organiser of Arabian Travel Market (ATM), has announced that the theme of the show will be ‘A new dawn for travel and tourism’ and the spotlight will be thrown onto the current state of the industry and more importantly, what the future holds. It will also look at the emerging trends and how innovation can drive the industry forward. Major destinations such as Dubai and Cairo are leading the way with estimated full year 2021 occupancy levels of 68% and 65% respectively and closely followed by Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Jeddah, Muscat and


Amman, with average occupancies of 58%, 56%, 51%, 48%, and 45% respectively. Overall, average year-on-year growth of the 20 destinations researched was 47%. Prior to the pandemic, the direct contribution of travel and tourism to the Middle East’s GDP was predicted by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), to reach US $133.6 billion by 2028. So, given subdued oil prices and a general economic slowdown due to COVID-19 restrictions, it is clear that the regional economy will be relying on travel and tourism to recover quickly, once a vaccine has been fully developed and rolled out. ATM 2021 will also play an integral role in Arabian Travel Week and for the first time, a new hybrid format will mean a virtual ATM running a week later to complement and reach a wider audience than ever before. TRAVANCORE HERITAGE TOURISM PROJECT TO FOCUS ON KERALA CAPITAL S

The first phase will be carried out in four stages across Thiruvananthapuram district, giving fillip to the tourism development

howcasing the cultural richness of the erstwhile Travancore kingdom that now lies in the southern part of the state, the Kerala Government is set to begin a Rs 100-crore Travancore Heritage Tourism Project (THTP) that envisages conservation of the region’s palaces, mansions and temples. The project will ensure that the old-world looks of the structures will be retained, besides illuminating the landmarks of the city to give them greater visual appeal in the evenings. THTP, overall, covers heritage structures from Padmanabhapuram Palace, now in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, to the Parthasarathy temple on the banks 30

of the Pampa in Aranmula of Pathanamthitta district. The first phase will be carried out in four stages across Thiruvananthapuram district, giving fillip to the tourism development. The project has been drafted by Mumbai-based architectural firm AbhaNarainLambah Associates, which is into conservation of several historical sites across India. “The Travancore Heritage Tourism Project is an attempt to highlight the hidden jewels of the erstwhile kingdom and give a boost to tourism, creating a new circuit for visitors to explore Kerala”, said Mr. Kadakampally Surendran, Minister for Tourism, Kerala. The phase one of THTP will give

a facelift to the famed Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple and adjoining East Fort, besides 19 majestic building complexes on either side of arterial MG Road up till Vellayambalam, spanning five kilometres. These structures will be illuminated by employing state-ofthe-art techniques. Simultaneously, a 14-km stretch from East Fort, which is the heart of the city, to Enjakkal northwestward will have 21 heritage-value structures lit up aesthetically. The work on both the roads is progressing well, authorities said. The second phase will carry out renovation of the historical monuments such as the dilapidated Koyikkal Palace in Attingal which


is 30 km north of the state capital,150-year-old Anantha Vilasam mansion, the 1839-built Ranga Vilasam and Sundara Vilasam, also near Padmanabhaswamy temple. At the centre of the project is Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple, with the remnants of its fort wall, streets with historically and architecturally important structures, shopping streets, the temple pond and the living streets. As part of the project, the state secretariat will be made more attractive with laser project. Using digital system, it will throw light on the political history of the 1956-formed Kerala. THTP has also charted the renovation of the Kilimanoor Palace that gave birth to world-famous artist Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906). Centuries old stone structures like Arattu Mandapam at Shang-

Apart from the monuments associated with the royal period, the circuit includes structures like Anjengo Fort, a trade settlement of East India Company in down south and the remnants of the 16th century Portuguese built St Thomas Fort at Thangassery in Kollam, By conserving and renovating the heritage monuments of the Travancore belt, THTP seeks to bring in more tourists from abroad. .

More than 50 crafts are presented in 28 studios with facilities for production, display and sales. The village has the presence of personalities like Gopi Master, who was conferred with Padma Shri for his contributions to handloom, and KR Mohanan, who had won the Shilpa Guru Award. An annual in-

ternational theme-based art and craft biennale, which will feature paintings, terracotta, handloom, sculptures, and reed and bamboo products along with workshops, will be conducted in the Village. Craft food festivals (in April) and arts festivals (in September) are other highlights of the village calendar. Besides, an annual international handicraft products festival is being planned in December. ayakers, standup paddlers and sailors from India as well as abroad will converge at Kochi in Kerala to paddle along the royal National Waterway 3 of the historic Muziris. The exciting project ‘Muziris Paddle’, which carved a niche on the in-

ternational tourism map in the last three years, will take place on February 12 and 13 along the Kottappuram-Kochi Waterway. The fourth edition of the ‘Muziris Paddle’, jointly organised by Kerala Tourism, Muziris Heritage Project and Jellyfish Watersports

consumer survey conducted by IndiGo revealed that 81% of the Travellers are confident that IndiGo will ensure clean and safe travel for their journey. The competition was launched to identify innovators whose ideas can advance tourism’s contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and attracted more than 10,000 participants from 138 countries. This competition is a UNWTO initiative, in collaboration with Wakalua (powered by Globalia),

created as part of the collaboration with the United Nations Innovation Network, a common action framework by UN Agencies to develop public-private partnerships to support the SDGs. The finalists were chosen by a special jury made up of experts drawn from international banks, airlines, tourism destinations and technology platforms. Reflecting the global interest in the initiative, the 60 finalists come from 28 countries, with each of UNWTO’s five global regions represented in the final stages. To select just one fi45 nalist for each of the 17 SDGs. each startup will be assessed according to fixed criteria, including their ability to contribute to a specific SDG, the ease of value capture, their potential business impact and the

maturity of both their product or platform and their team. HOW COUNTRIES ARE PERFORMING ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY World Economic Forum released its latest Global Competitiveness Report 2020

T

he 2020 special edition of The Global Competitiveness Report (GCR) series comes out at a very difficult and uncertain historical moment. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has not only led to a global health crisis and deep economic recession—deeper than the downturn during the 2008–2009 financial crisis - but has also created a climate of profound uncertainty about the future outlook. At this pivotal moment, there are growing calls for “building back better”. While the immediate priority is to respond to the health crisis, this moment in time also offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the fundamental drivers of growth and productivity that have degraded since the financial crisis. It is also a moment to determine how we may shape our economic systems in the future so that they are not just productive but also lead to environmental sustainability and shared prosperity. 54

Since this unusual moment calls for innovative and much-needed shifts in policy,the long-standing Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) rankings have been paused and this 2020 special edition is dedicated to elaborate on the priorities for recovery and revival, and consider the building blocks of a transformation towards new economic systems that combine “productivity”, “people” and “planet” targets. In 2021, the re-

port will revert to a benchmarking exercise that will provide a new compass for the future direction of economic growth. This special edition analyses historical trends on factors of competitiveness as well as the latest thinking on future priorities. It provides recommendations against three timelines such as priorities that emerge from the historical analysis before the health crisis, priorities


needed to restart the economy, beyond immediate responses to the COVID-19 crisis, while embedding people and planet into economic policies (revival over the next 1-2 years); and priorities and policies needed to reboot economic systems in the longer run to achieve sustainable and inclusive prosperity in the future . Recommendations and timeframes are grouped into four broad areas of action: 1) reviving and transforming the enabling environment, 2) reviving and transforming human capital, 3) reviving and transforming markets, and 4) reviving and transforming the innovation ecosystem. An initial assessment of countries on readiness for transformation is also provided that converts key priorities into quantitative measures for 37 economies. Reviving and transforming the enabling environment Before the COVID-19 crisis, a long-standing issue had been the ongoing and consistent erosion of institutions, as shown by declining or stalling checks and balances and transparency indicators. Against this backdrop, in the revival phase governments should prioritize improving long-term thinking capacity within governments and enhance mechanisms to deliver public services, including greater digitalization of public services. In the transformation phase, governments should work to ensure that public institutions embed strong governance principles and to regain public trust by serving their citizens. A second area of concern before the 2020 pandemic was high levels of debt in selected economies as well as widening inequalities. The emergency and stimulus measures have pushed already high public debt to unprecedented levels, while tax www.tourismindia.org

bases have continued eroding or shifting. To respond to these issues, in the revival phase, the priority should be on preparing support measures for highly indebted low-income countries and plan for future public debt deleveraging. In the longer run (transformation phase) countries should focus on shifting to more progressive taxation, rethinking how corporations, wealth and labour are taxed. This will require both national reforms and setting an international cooperative framework. Before the COVID-19 crisis, de-

spite the significant expansions of ICT access, ICT availability and use remained far from universal. The COVID-19 crisis has accelerated digitalization in advanced economies and made catching up more difficult for countries or regions that were lagging before the crisis. To address this challenge, in the revival phase, countries should upgrade utilities and other infrastructure as well as closing the digital divide within and across countries for both firms and households. In the transformation phase, the priority should be

Reviving and transforming the innovation ecosystem In this area, a paradox had recently emerged: a positive evolution of entrepreneurial culture in the past decade, but the creation of new firms and breakthrough technologies had stalled. Technology has lagged especially in the capacity to delivering solutions to energy consumption, emissions and meeting the demand for inclusive social services. This exercise covers a small set of countries (37), measuring only those priorities for economic transformation rather than the complete set of factors needed to drive productivity, sustainability and shared prosperity. The aim of this exercise is three-fold. First, it maps the areas of priority against available data points in an effort to better define the actions and/or policies needed to “build back better” economies that are productive, sustainable and inclusive. Second, it provides a snapshot of the current situation in each of the 37 countries, assessing the extent to which many countries today are on the way towards transforming their economies. Third, it highlights where the key data gaps lie in assessing current national policies and performance. While noting that the available statistics are insufficient to measure all aspects for achieving

economic transformation, the results show that no country is yet fully ready to transform. Among the currently measurable policies, however, the ‘Nordic model’ stands out as the most promising in shifting towards a productive, sustainable and inclusive economic system. Assessing resilience and crisis disruptions through business sentiment The impact of the current health crisis had a profound impact on the perception of business leaders, captured by the Executive Opinion Survey. Perceptions in some areas indicated that progress critically stalled or declined during the crisis, while in others there was a marked improvement compared to previous trends. The top 5 areas that experienced the most movement downward in advanced economies were Competition in network services, Collaboration between companies, Competition in professional services, Competition in retail services, and Ease of finding skilled employees; while in emerging economies these

were Business costs of crime and violence, Judicial independence, Organized crime, Extent of market dominance, and Public trust of politicians. The top 5 areas that experienced the most upward movement were Government’s responsiveness to change, Collaboration within a company, Venture capital availability, Social safety net protection, and Soundness of banks in advanced economies; and Collaboration within a company, Government’s responsiveness to change, Efficiency of train services, Venture capital availability, and Country capacity to attract talent in emerging economies. The Executive Opinion Survey also helps to identify some common features that helped countries better manage the impact of the pandemic on their economy and their people. Based on the assessment of business leaders i) economic digitization and digital skills; ii) safety nets and financial soundness; iii) governance and planning; and iv) health system and research capacity have contributed to countries’ resilience to the health crisis.

he COVID-19 pandemic represents an unprecedented crisis for the tourism industry. Since the livelihood of millions of people across the Asia Pacific is depend on it, the magnitude of the impact is immense in terms of the potential shrinkage of revenues, GDP and jobs. Orderly and strategic tourism policy responses can mitigate the worst negative impacts of COVID-19 and, in some cases, lay a foundation for healthier, more sustainable post-pandemic growth. The report, titled “COVID-19 and the Tourism Sector: A Comparison of Policy Responses in Asia Pacific”, by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), conducted by Clickable Impact Consulting Group and supported by the Global Initiative on Disaster Risk Management (GIDRM), a project implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and commissioned by the German Federal Ministry

plans. “The revitalization of the travel and tourism sector is a priority for all destinations around the world and many have already introduced fiscal and monetary measures for sector revitalization including tax incentives and subsidies. However, more needs to be done to ensure that the sector not only recovers but do so in a more resilient, responsible and sustainable manner. Therefore, we look forward to working in partnership with our members and industry colleagues around the region to ensure the better and brighter future of travel,” said PATA CEO Dr. Mario Hardy. To validate and enrich findings, interviews were also conducted with key industry leaders or policymakers from national tourism organisations or other wellplaced stakeholders. WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP GOES TO ROVANIEMI Finland is hosting two FIA World Rally Championship events at Jyväskylä and Rovaniemi , in the middle of the Arctic scenery in the Finnish Lapland at the end of February

T

his year, Finland will be hosting not just one, but two FIA World Rally Championship events, when in addition to Jyväskylä, the best rally drivers in the world will also be competing against each other in the middle of the Arctic scenery of Rovaniemi in the Finnish Lapland at the end of February. A rare opportunity to host two WRC events in the same year presented itself to AKK Sports, the organiser of Rally Finland, as it was announced in December last year that February’s Rally Sweden would not go ahead as planned – which in turn left a gap in the WRC calendar to be filled. “We set out to look into the matter and explore our possibilities. Of the various different options, Rovaniemi with its solid culture in organising winter rallies, good reputation as an international event city and large number of enthusiastic and experienced rally-makers stood out. I am very pleased about how quickly the City of Rovaniemi embraced the idea, and we were lucky to get the equally enthusiastic CapitalBox as the other main partner of Arctic Rally Finland. It’s fantastic to be able to provide something extraordinary like this – we are making history together”, describes the CEO of AKK Sports Riku Bitter.

The Finnish Rally Championship season opener takes place in Rovaniemi this coming weekend, 15 - 16 January, and preparations for the WRC event up next are already in full swing with the FRC staff. Extra special attention will be paid to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) responsibility practices, and the organisers will strictly adhere to all the COVID-19 guidelines issued by the state, the local authorities as well as the FIA. The Arctic Rally Finland Powered by CapitalBox ends on Sunday 28 February with the rally-closing Power Stage taking place in the afternoon. To sum up, the Rovaniemi WRC round driven at the end of February will feature ten special stages and the total distance of approximately 260 special stage kilometres.

“BUY NOW, PAY LATER” FOR INDIA’S MSME SECTOR Enables micro, small and medium businesses to restart operations & recover from COVID-19 crisis

OLV, a B2B e-commerce platform for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME), has launched of a BuyNow-Pay-Later (BNPL) product for MSME buyers and sellers on its platform. BNPL as a concept has already made big inroads into the consumer retail sector and seen significant success there, especially in the last year. SOLV, in one of the first such moves in the B2B space, now brings the convenience of BNPL to the MSME sector.
