ALTERNATIVE TOURISM FOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

T

ourism as a major industry has many players who can impact many small and medium businesses in the country and this Industry also have some unique characteristics and challenges. The snowballing nature of the impacts of this Industry always throws these challenges to governments all over the world. With developments in the Tourism sector, the economic process of each destination is influenced across many levels. But for increased efficiency, a more calculated approach towards diversification in Tourism is the need of the hour for both consumers and the Industry as well. Developments in tourism will not be efficiently possible as long as local communities and establishments are neglected or not allowed to participate. More and more developing countries are starting to be fully aware of the potential benefits of tourism and those who have suitable tourism infrastructure have already prioritized well ahead and use their tourism Industries for economic development. The contribution of Tourism to create a socio-political environment for peaceful coexistence of societies with diversified cultures have already been established at various levels globally. Responsible and sustainable tourism is paramount in maintaining the equilibrium of global peace and natural sustainability to position tourism as one of the most peaceful industries. In modern times, travelers are not satisfied with just stereotypical itineraries like the sun, sand, and sea. A while ago, little awareness about new unexplored destinations caused most

people to flock to the most popular places but now the scenario is different, and travelers are more aware of opportunities mainly thanks to the Technological revolution. Travelers have made changes in their itineraries from familiar and established destinations to unexplored destinations and it is time to change the attitude of the Tourism industry as well. Since its potential has the capacity to influence the economy of the country directly or indirectly and no doubt is left in the case of Tourism whether it can influence local regional and national economies. Alternative Tourism is one solution to satisfy the diverse and different needs of customers. It is the one tried and tested answer to today’s valueoriented Tourists. Alternative tourism reforms can perhaps change the entire tourism industry and will make tourism far more responsible. It can also act as a new marketing tool to woo the footfalls of those who belong to the responsible class or are more focused on getting experiences. Traditional Mass tourism has its own limits since the benefits are limited whereas alternative tourism is termed as more beneficial. Now due to Globalization, countries are increasingly dependent on each other all over the world. Every negative shock in one country can be spread to other countries. Through practicing Alternative Tourism. the increased risk due to the interconnection and interdependence of economies can be greatly minimized.

“NEVER MISS KERALA”

K

erala is absolutely amazing. It’s a land where nature, culture and people harmonise so well to make the visiting an unforgettable experience. It is simply unmissable.” This was the general refrain of Kerala Blog Express members, a group of 26 bloggers from 21 countries who travelled through Kerala- God’s Own Country. Facilitated by Kerala’s Tourism Department in partnership with the tourism industry, the sixth edition of the Kerala Blog Express (KBE), which set out from Kochi on March 21, wound up at the internationally renowned Kovalam beach resort, on April 6, 2019 at Trivandrum. As top travel bloggers and social influencers who have been to many parts of the world, each one of them

has his or her personal choices and judgments when it comes to rating and writing about the places they visit. But while sharing their experience of the current trip at the sea-front Hotel Leela Raviz, they were unanimous in their view that ‘Kerala is a place which no traveller can afford to miss.’ “It’s an experience of life. It’s all about getting memories,” said Ms. Shea Powell from Jamaica. “I will tell the world about the “complete and different experience of Kerala through my blog.” Ms. Shea was especially bowled over by the exquisite taste and variety of Kerala’s spice-rich food and Alleppey (Alappuzha) remains one of the best places she has ever seen anywhere in the world. “The most striking thing about

Kerala is its tranquility and its friendly people,” said Mr. Alex Chacon, blogger and video producer from the US. “I will certainly record the deep impression that Kerala has left on me and post videos and photographs on my blog www. Conquer The World.com,” he gushed forth. Thanking the participants for showing keen interest in Kerala, Ms. Rani George IAS, Secretary, Kerala Tourism said that, the latest edition of KBE would certainly generate a lot more enthusiasm about the state the world over. “They all say it had been a memorable experience. I am sure the writings and images to be put out by these 26 bloggers from 21 countries would take forward Kerala Tourism’s Human by Nature campaign,” said Ms.

FARHANA OBERSON FROM KENYA WON THE PRIZE FOR THE BEST CONTENT POSTED DURING THE JOURNEY FOR HER VIDEO ON KERALA AND ITS PEOPLE assets through first-hand accounts of the travellers. Kerala Tourism’s latest global campaign titled ‘Human by Nature’, a threeminute video film that encapsulates the scenic state’s unique charms. KBE shaped up after organisers shortlisted more than 7,000 entries the department received from 50-plus countries. The bloggers in KBE 6 included the well-known Alex Chacon of the US and London-based Alex Outhwaite. HOW DOES INDIA TRAVEL INDIA’S TRAVEL SPENDS EXPECTED TO GROW AT 13% TO $136 BILLION BY 2021

T

he Indian traveller has come of age, spending approximately $94 billion in 2018, on around 2 billion domestic and international trips, helping the Indian travel and tourism industry achieve unprecedented scale. The momentum is expected to continue and the industry will grow at a 13 percent CAGR to $136 billion by 2021, according to a report, ‘How Does India Travel’, released by Bain & Company and Google India today. The report outlines how India spends on travel, the influence of online channels in their purchase journey and potential growth opportunities for travel businesses till 2021. Deep diving into the $136 billion spends, the report cites a 12 percent growth in transportation ($50 billion), 13 percent growth in lodging ($21 billion) and consumption, which includes spends on shopping, recreation and food, to grow at 13 percent ($65 billion) over the next three years. Additionally, as more people come online, smartphone penetration improves and use of digital payments goes up, the report estimates 20

Tourism India April 2019

that Indian travellers will spend an additional $24 billion on online travel bookings over the next three years, a growth from 25 percent in 2018 to 35 percent in 2021. Elucidating the planning journey of Indian travellers, both for business and leisure, the report calls out five phases of a customer journey - Interest, Research, Booking, Experience and Sharing. According to the report during key research-heavy phase of interest, research and experience, digital plays a pivotal role with over 86 percent of consumers being influenced by online channels. During this phase, travellers spend their maximum time on search, travel tour provider

websites, price comparison websites, and travel articles. Online video too plays a significant role with 21 percent of travellers being influenced by this platform. In the booking and sharing phase, the report states that nearly 60 percent of customers book transport and lodging online, and over 50 percent share feedback online with social media being the dominant platform. Talking about the market opportunities for online travel players, Vikas Agnihotri, Country Director - Sales, Google India said, “New users perceive that online channels are geared towards the more frequent flyers and experience-

FUELED BY DIGITAL, INDIAN TRAVELERS TO SPEND AN ADDITIONAL $24 BILLION ON ONLINE TRAVEL BOOKINGS OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS

oriented travellers; and existing travellers research online but the lack of trust in payments and booking experience make them end up booking offline. If travel players tap these online users through personalised marketing, messaging and travel plans, they can further augment online travel bookings. This can be done by adopting digital technologies to influence customers early in the journey and moving from one-time engagement to ongoing relationships to have a positive impact.” “There is a perception amongst consumers that online channels are geared towards premium customers, along with a marked distrust around payment and pricing terms. It is imperative for businesses to address these concerns in order to effectively tap into the growing base of users.” Arpan Sheth, partner Bain & Company said. The report has identified the five cohorts of travellers in India, across business and leisure travel, and categorised each against their online research behaviour.

Frequent flyers who make their choices based on convenience, availability, brand preference and past experiences and nearly 70 percent of them booked online, cumulatively spent $17 billion in 2018. Budget business traveler makes their decisions based on cost of travel, availability and consultation amongst their personal business network and 86 percent of them researched online whereas only 60 percent book online, cumulatively spent $20 billion in 2018. Experience-oriented traveler extensively research both online and offline for ‘authentic’ experiences and convenience of options; display high loyalty towards preferred brand of airlines or hotels and actively share experiences. Around 70 percent of their bookings were done online and cumulatively spent $22 billion in 2018. Budget group traveler make multiple decision-makers in the process and take the final decisions based on minimal cost and 90 percent researched online and 55 percent booked online, cumulatively spent $29 billion in 2018. The Occasional traveler

visiting friends/relatives prefer to maximize family convenience within a budget and believe online terms and conditions are restrictive and 92 percent researched online but only 60 percent booked online, spent $6 billion in 2018. The report cites five major shifts that marketers need to make to market to the online travellers - Alleviate consumer concerns by improving the booking and payment experience to build a trusted brand and increase adoption, Address the negative customer perception issues by mass customization to drive higher share in the segment, Utilising consumer technology to penetrate mass segments (standardise, enable sharing), reach non-transactors (build offline presence), and create new user access. New innovative and frugal ways to package the experience to increase both adoption and retention with a robust digital backend to adapt to customer needs across the purchase journey are the recommendations.

n our current times of great change, people are questioning what it means to be a leader and rethinking what we expect from those chosen to lead. There are certain qualities that leaders should always embody, such as integrity, persistence and objectivity. But my involvement in the transformation of hundreds of companies has shown me that different strengths are required at different times. The following characteristics are critical for leading through disruption.

1. COMMUNICATION This is the most critical attribute on the list. A leader must think of themselves as akin to a Chief Communications Officer. They must not only set the strategic vision - where the team is going and how it will get there - but also develop and articulate clear messaging so the vision is easily and widely understood.

2. URGENCY In times of great disruption, not making decisions quickly can be just as destructive as making the wrong ones. Leaders must drive execution. 22

Tourism India April 2019

This means some decisions will be made without the optimal level of input and information. The key is to make decisions that are “nearly right, but now”, then pivot if necessary when new information becomes available.

3. COLLABORATION Success rests on the ability to engage the entire leadership team and other key stakeholders around a common vision and shared goals. This becomes critically important at various points throughout planning and execution. These groups will not only help to solve problems and navigate roadblocks, but they will also become evangelizers of your strategic vision, helping to communicate it broadly and inspire greater followership among stakeholders. Focus on your team, championing others and calling out their achievements, while inspiring, motivating and leading by example. “Never on your own” is one phrase that always has stood out to me. In times of change, it should be your mantra.

4. CREDIBILITY AND AUTHENTICITY Credibility is an important leadership attribute for any situation, but when leading through change it becomes

even more critical. Many building blocks shape it. From a pragmatic standpoint, planning and sequencing various components of a plan and setting achievable milestones can certainly play a role. But so do socalled “soft skills”, such as acting with consistency and reliability, being a moral compass, having integrity and remaining calm.

5. FEARLESSNESS In times of disruption, you must be brave enough to make tough decisions. But you must also be bold and confident enough to remain optimistic, even as you navigate difficult times. It takes a great deal of energy to counter pessimism, plenty of which you will encounter in times of change. The key is to be brave and steadfast in spite of it. Adopting a state of mind centred on personal growth can help, as well as the ability to see change and challenges as opportunities rather than setbacks.

6. STRATEGIC MINDSET Good leaders through disruptive times have an ability to see the big picture and understand the steps needed to achieve the desired outcome. But great leaders also have the grit to recognize what is realistic and achievable at a tactical level, as well as the timelines needed to execute effectively. This knowledge, plus the ability to be both analytical and pragmatic, helps leaders to simplify complexity, which is an important component to a strategic approach.

7. EMPATHY No one is immune to the fact that change is difficult. Even the most enlightened among us have moments of struggle. When leading through disruption, you must never lose sight of this fact. You need to consider what your

stakeholders are thinking and feeling at all times. Especially when the disruption is severe or new, there is a good chance these feelings will include fear, anger, resentment, and, once again, a dose of pessimism. You need to consider, from a place of genuine curiosity and understanding, just where these feelings are coming from

so you can open a dialogue, address any issues and bring people along on your journey. It has often been said there is no leadership without followership. The best leaders rely on their emotional intelligence to help motivate and inspire those around them. April 2019 Tourism India

RIDE THE WAVES OF

NAZARÉ BEACH THE LONG SANDY HALF-MOON SHAPED BEACH IN PORTUGAL

54

Tourism India April 2019

N

azaré beach, with its mild climate and natural beauty, has one of the most ancient traditions connected to fishing in Portugal. The long sandy half-moon shaped beach, which is also the town’s sea front, is known for its grandeur and for the brightly-coloured awnings that decorate the white sandy beaches, contrasting with the blue of the water. A typical fishing town, Nazaré is nowadays a busy summer resort, where side by side with the crowds of tourists, one still sees all over the streets of the town the fish-sellers, and the carapaus (horse mackerel) laid out to dry. The Sítio district, at the town’s highest point (accessible by a funicular), is without doubt the best viewpoint in the area. But it is also associated with the cult of Our Lady of Nazaré who, according to the 12th century legend, was invoked by the alcaide (commander of a fortress or castle) Dom Fuas Roupinho who, while stalking a deer, was about to fall down into an abyss with no possible salvation. As a sign of gratitude for the mercy he received, Dom Fuas Roupinho ordered a small chapel to be built - the Ermida de Memória. A little way away, in the 18th century the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré was built, in whose honour grandiose festivals are held in September. Facing the sea on the right, you will see an impressive headland. This is Sítio, which provides one of the most famous views of the Portuguese coast. It is a 318 metre rock face with a sheer drop to the sea, and is reached on foot by the bravest, or by going up the funicular. At the top sits the Ermida da Memória chapel, famous for the legend of the miracle that Our Lady made to prevent the horse of the nobleman, D. Fuas Roupinho, leaping over the precipice. True or not, the Suberco Belvedere shows the imprint left in the rock by one of the horse’s

hooves that foggy morning in 1182. Sítio also houses the Shrine to Our Lady of Nazaré and not far away, the Dr. Joaquim Manso Museum for more details about the traditions of Nazaré. If you have the time, walk from Sítio across Pedralva Park, to Pederneira, a natural viewpoint with an unmissable view over the Nazaré coast. Nazaré’s major attractions are the waves and surfing, thanks to the “Nazaré Canyon”, a submarine geomorphological phenomenon that allows the formation of perfect giant waves. It is the largest underwater canyon in Europe, about 170 kilometres along the coast, reaching a depth of 5,000 metres. The Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara received worldwide publicity when, in 2011, rode the biggest beach-breaking wave in the world, about 30 metres high, at Praia do Norte. He won the Billabong XXL Global BigWave Award and entered the Guinness Book of World Records. Like him, surfers from around the world visit Nazaré every year to venture into the sea. The beach also attracts sunbathers, who provide a great audience to appreciate the stunts of the young surfers. Take the opportunity of a casual stroll through the narrow streets

perpendicular to the beach to get to know Nazaré better. Take a break in one of the restaurants to enjoy a plate of fresh seafood, grilled fish or an appetising bouillabaisse. And in the evening, there’s nothing like enjoying the setting sun on any terrace overlooking the sea, while the lights come on and night falls.

ABOUT PORTUGAL Portugal was founded in 1143, making it one of the oldest nations in Europe. Portugal is named after its 2nd largest city, Porto. There are 22 UNESCO World Heritage classifications in Portugal; and each year more than 20 million tourists visit the country. With the longest bridge in Europe, Portugal is also a very popular destination from India for those looking for a Euro break and an extension to their Spain and Morocco itineraries. The total flight duration from Portugal to India is 10 hours, 42 minutes and India is 5:30 hours ahead of Portugal.
