The first settlers in what was to become Estevan arrived in 1892, along with the expansion of the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was incorporated as a village in 1899, and later became a town in 1906. On March 1, 1957, Estevan acquired the status of a city, which, in Saskatchewan terms, is any community of 5,000 or more. The name origin is attributed to George Stephen’s Registered Telegraphic Address, Estevan. George Stephen was the first President of the Canadian Pacific Railway from 1881 to 1888. On December 22, 1915, the 152nd (Weyburn-Estevan) Battalion, CEF was authorised and recruited men from the area before departing to Great Britain on October 3, 1916. Estevan was the site of the notorious Estevan Riot in 1931. Although most of the strikers were from nearby Bienfait, the strike is associated with Estevan because it was in this city that the demonstrators were met by members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. After the subsequent riot, which lasted 45 minutes, three strikers lay dead. It was later proven that the three miners had been killed by the RCMP. The miners had been organized by the Workers’ Unity League. Visit the Energy city to find our more of the culture and history offered here.

THINGS TO DO & SEE

The one that got away

When he was young, I told Dale Jr. that hunting and racing are a lot alike. Holding that steering wheel and holding that rifle both mean you better be responsible. ~Dale Earnhardt

BIG CATCH

Fishing is a popular activity in Estevan and with all the local hotspots you will have plenty of opportunity to catch the big one. Boundary Dam is a popular spot to fish in the area. Cast a line and find Walleye, Perch and Northern Pike. Plus, it’s the only place in Western Canada to fish for Large Mouth Bass. Rafferty Dam is less busy than Boundary with miles of desolate area perfect for fishing. When fishing Rafferty you generally catch Walleye, Perch and Northern Pike. Drive by the Souris River on a beautiful summer night and you will find families casting into the Souris River at Woodlawn Regional Park. You will hear “I got one” sounds trickling down the river. There are plenty of other fishing holes made by the “spill piles” from the old mining sites south of the city. Stocked with Trout, Rainbow being the most common by fishermen throughout the years, these piles could bring home a trophy for your wall.

BIG HUNT

The southeast pocket is known for its big game hunting. Most years White Tail and Mule Deer are in the Provincial Record Book from our area making Estevan a hotspot for these big beasts. Hunters also have luck being drawn for Moose and Elk that wander through our zone.

Hunting and Fishing licenses can be purchased at the Ministry of Environment office or retail outlets such as; Canadian Tire, Pro Wash Shell, Walmart, etc. If you have any questions for the local hunting and fishing season please call Estevan Ministry office at 637-4600 or visit estevanwildlifederation.com

For the bird hunter Estevan and area has the best Pheasant hunting in the province. The birds are abundant and thrive in our area waiting for you to spot them. If you are out spotting you most likely will see Prairie Chicken, Hungarian Partridge, Ducks and Geese.

Safely catch and release when ice fishing

When it is very cold outside you have to get the fish back to the water immediately because the eyes and slime freezes. Fish eyes freeze very easily. Pike need their slime as it is their protective coating from infection and disease so do not remove it from the hole. Leave the fish in the hole and remove the hook. When releasing the fish gently release her back through the hole holding her tail slightly. When she revives she will swim away on her own. Never move your fish back and forth through the water because its like drowning them.

TOURS

Try something new

The traveler sees what he sees, the tourist sees what he has come to see. ~Gilbert K. Chesterton

Energy Tours Few places will provide you with such indepth, guided tours of the means by which coal fired plants help generate electricity for our province. Landmarks within the community, Boundary Dam and Shand Power Stations are an integral part of the community. The mammoth size and operations of these marvels can be explored and learned through guided tours. The tours are FREE and provide a great insight into the industry of coal mining. Tours run from June to August from Tuesday through Saturday. Participants have the option of selecting between two tours, depending on their preference on tour specifics and time. The morning tour leaves at 9am from the Visitor Information Centre, and tours Rafferty Dam and the Boundary Dam Mine site. The Rafferty Dam reservoir is the largest body of water in the south eastern corridor.

A coal hauler dops a load at the SaskPower Boundary Dam Plant during an Energy Tour.

The afternoon tour departs at 1pm from Visitor Information Centre as well and tours the Shand Power Station, Shand Greenhouse and the Boundary Dam Mine site. The Shand Power Station is the most environmentally advanced coal fired plant in the country. While drop ins are welcome, it does not guarantee you a spot. To reserve your spot, call the Visitor Information Centre at (306) 634 6044.
