What is a Chamber of Commerce 84121454513212485642302344523132512328282719063451 The Estevan Chamber of Commerce is a diversified, member-driven network of businesses striving to improve the business climate and community well-being. A Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary organiza on of the business community. It unites business and professional individuals and firms, thus crea ng a central agency which lends itself to improving business and building a be er community. A Chamber of Commerce is people, and although these are predominantly the members of the business community, there is a place in the Chamber for all who share the desire to improve the community. The Chamber organizes and directs the energies of those who believe that a community worth living in is a community worth improving. The Chamber enables these people to accomplish collec vely what none of them could do individually. The strength of the organiza on lies in a rac ng the greatest number of individuals crea ng a pool of resources from which can be drawn ideas, energy and finances. The major responsibility of a Chamber of Commerce is the community’s economic well-being. It works to increase wealth and prosperity by facilita ng the growth of exis ng businesses and fostering new ones. The Chamber performs many func ons to foster the growth of the business community. For exis ng businesses, the Chamber organizes dozens of special events each year, which facilitate networking amongst Estevan’s diverse business community. Many business relaonships have been established at the Chamber’s monthly Luncheon
which is held every second Wednesday of each month or at any of the other events that the Chamber hosts year-round. (go to www. estevanchamber.ca for a list of more events hosted) The Chamber also supports its members by referring them to potenal customers. Many visitors and newcomers to the area contact the Chamber to find out where to get their oil changed, where to bank, where to eat, etc. The Chamber only refers its members. Every year, the organiza on publishes a Membership Directory and an official Visitors Guide, which is distributed to Chamber members and visitors to Estevan. Our mission is to be a diversified, member-driven network of businesses striving to improve the business climate and community well-being. By working in partnership with the business community, local non-profit sector organiza ons and our municipal partners at the City and RM of Estevan, the Estevan Chamber of Commerce is commi ed to enhancing sustainable growth and development of both business and community. Our vision for Estevan is to be an a rac ve des na on for business and family to call home, with a clear and concise plan for enhanced economic development and community growth. The Chamber understands the importance of community and the impact a community’s desirability will have in terms of a rac ng both business and labour to Estevan. In that end, we strive to encourage development and planning that is conducive to both business and social development. The vision for the organiza on is to be a recognized leader and catalyst of posi ve change for business and community. Economic Development •Business Reten on & Expansion The Estevan Chamber of Commerce recognizes that the best way to ensure a growing business community is to work to maintain the exis ng business community. In order to achieve this, we meet with and survey local business owners and managers to iden fy any poten al barriers to reten on and provide assistance to business expansion priori es. The surveys also provide input regarding business percep ons about the community and local government; this informa on provides the Chamber a great method to bring informa on from the business community to City Hall in order to address any exis ng or poten al issues. •Investment Promo on In order to a ract new investment to Estevan, the Chamber focuses a great deal of its efforts on investment promo on. This year, the Chamber will connue to focus on marke ng the community with our website, and by a ending trade fairs, developing online promo onal videos, and through magazine adver sing, direct mail campaigns and by encouraging further earned media. Estevan is vibrant and growing, with one of the country’s strongest business community’s; the Estevan Chamber recognizes that our dynamic and ac ve business community is among Estevan’s greatest assets. In an effort to publicly acknowledge the superior efforts of these businesses and individuals, the Chamber created its biannual EBEX Awards Gala. The next event will take place in June of 2015. Below you will find an outline of the selection and nomination process. We encourage nominations from all of our area citizens as well as self-nominations. Who is Eligible? >> The EBEX Awards are open to all private sector businesses (non-governmental), for profit and non-profit/charitable organizations and individuals in the Estevan region. >> Membership in the Estevan Chamber of Commerce is encouraged, but not mandatory to participate in this award program. >> A company may submit their own nomination form or be sponsored by a third party (all third party nominations must be approved by an authorized representative of the sponsored company). The Selection Process All award nominations are reviewed by an independent panel of judges comprised of the Chamber of Commerce’s last five (5) Past Presidents. The judges are responsible for determining eligibility of each nomination in accordance with the criteria outlined, and selecting an award recipient in each category. The finalists in each category are notified and the winner in each category is announced at the Awards Ceremony. Judges must declare a conflict of interest and must remove themselves from any discussion and choosing of winners in the category where their conflict exists. Any member having a personal or financial interest shall reveal that interest, shall leave the meeting during the period of discussion, and shall refrain from any discussion of such matter with any member of the judges’ panel. Application for Membership Membership Terms and Conditions Membership fees for the Estevan Chamber of Commerce are payable in advance, are non-refundable for twelve consecutive months from the date of acceptance and will remain in force until revoked in writing. All corporate members are fully responsible and accountable for all actions of, and all charges incurred by, their designated Chamber representative(s). Facts on Saskatchewan business Saskatchewan conĆ&#x;nues to be the hot spot for investment with new capital spending by private and public organizaĆ&#x;ons. In 2012, capital investment in Saskatchewan increased by 6.5%, to a record level of $20.9B, compared to 2011. New capital spending by private and public organizaĆ&#x;ons in Saskatchewan totalled $19.6B in 2011 according to StaĆ&#x;sĆ&#x;cs Canada figures released in February 2013. The private sector accounted for $16.9B or 86.2% and the public sector contributed $2.7B or 13.8% of the total expenditures. In 2012, capital investment in Saskatchewan increased by 6.5%, to $20.9B, compared to 2011. The private sector accounted for about 17.4% or 83.2% and the public sector contributed $3.5B or 16.8% of the total private and public investment expenditures. Saskatchewan posted a Gross DomesĆ&#x;c Product at basic prices of $55.5B in 2012. This represented an increase of 2.2% in real GDP compared to 2011.
For 2013, capital investment in Saskatchewan is expected to reach $20.5B. The private sector is expected to account for about $17.0B or 83% and the public sector is projected to contribute $3.5B or 17.0% of the total expenditure in 2013. The 2013 private and public capital expenditure intenĆ&#x;ons would be sixth consecuĆ&#x;ve year in which new capital spending exceeded the $14B mark, if actual investment meets investment intenĆ&#x;ons. In the third quarter of 2013, investment in non-residenĆ&#x;al construcĆ&#x;on in Saskatchewan totalled $438.5M. New business incorporaĆ&#x;ons in Saskatchewan in August 2013 totalled 458. For 2014, the average real GDP growth forecast is 2.8%, second among the provinces and above the naĆ&#x;onal average of 1.7%.

2013 Accomplishments The Estevan Chamber of Commerce has worked over the past year on several ini a ves to help further promote and develop our local business community. Our mission of being a diversified, member-driven network of businesses striving to improve the business climate and community well-being stands behind all that we do. Our three divisions of the Chamber, Economic Development and Tourism all are geared toward helping achieve greater business success in the community. Among our priori es this year were to complete our economic development plan, increase our online presence, work to alleviate the housing and labour shortages, increase our advocacy efforts and to host events that showcase, celebrate or assist the local business community. Our members are the core of our organiza on and as such, we host several events over the course of the year for their benefit. The most prominent of these events this past year was our second edi on of the Estevan Business Excellence Awards Gala (EBEX); these awards are presented to members of the local business community that have achieved outstanding success in their respec ve industry or in one of our respec ve categories. Congratula ons to all of our nominees and in par cular to our award recipients, which this year included Turnbull Excava ng (Business of the Year & Growth & Expansion), Trimount Developments (Outstanding Service), TS&M Supply (Community Involvement), Southeast Health Group (Environmental Leader), Brent Gedak (Young Entrepreneur), G2 Eavestroughing (New Business Venture) and Warren Waldegger (Business Leader). We also welcomed three outstanding entrepreneurial families into our Business Hall of Fame, including Ray and Doris Frehlick, the Seregella family and the Symons family. The Chamber also hosted several other events this year including our monthly luncheons, Farmer’s Apprecia on Dinner, Beach Bash (in partnership with Woodlawn Regional Park), Showcase, Networking on the Greens, Pure Energy Show and Shine, the Pumpkin Carving Contest and Kickoff to Christmas. We can’t thank our members enough for their involvement with all these events, including sponsorship, a endance and volunteer support. The economic development plan was approved by the City and RM councils in the summer of 2013. This plan focuses on three main areas; investment a rac on and reten on, labour recruitment and reten on and business growth, development and reten on. In regards to investment a rac on, the Chamber plans to encourage investment by promo ng the community and its natural resource advantage primarily through a endance of tradeshows and conferences and by establishing a biennial Energy Expo. The inaugural Estevan Energy Expo is to be held in June of 2014 and will feature exhibitors, speakers and tours that will highlight the region’s coal, oil & gas and geothermal resource base. As the regional hub for a popula on much larger than our own city’s, we also want to take advantage of the local demographic and income levels that would be a able to support far greater retail and entertainment op ons within the community. Our labour recruitment and reten on strategies will focus on the three areas of developing a student workforce, a rac ng internaonal students and developing a community beau fica on strategy. Canadian and interna onal students can be a major source of skilled labour. The Chamber intends to work in partnership with the regional school division and the Southeast Regional College in order to establish stronger networks into the corporate sector of the community and develop a program of student internships to a ract and retain both local and interna onal students. By further developing the aesthe c appeal of the community, it is believed that we will be
in a stronger posi on to both a ract and retain families to the community. By placing a greater focus on business growth, development and reten on, we will be able to ensure that our exis ng business community is be er able to handle any future economic fluctua ons that tend to happen in a resource based economy. Our business reten on and expansion program provides the opportunity to meet with local employers in order to gauge future demands for property, capital and labour in order to assist with community planning, as well as to iden fy any hurdles currently being faced by employers that will drive our advocacy efforts at the local, provincial and federal levels of government. Estevan is known as the Energy Capital of Saskatchewan; this brand plays favourably for our region going forward as energy has become a commodity increasingly in demand. Our intent is to further establish and promote this brand both within Saskatchewan and globally in order to create economic benefit for our local business community. Housing and labour shortages con nue to inhibit the local business community and as such, the Chamber, in partnership with both the City of Estevan and the RM of Estevan no. 5 have made this an area of priority. In 2013, a Community Housing Business Plan was developed by the Canadian Home Builders Associa on that iden fies the demand that exists currently and going forward in Estevan. The report provides an outline of the types and numbers of units required over several years and provides concrete plans to help achieve success in this cri cal area. There are currently two new residen al subdivisions being developed by private firms providing a variety of housing types for both residents and newcomers; it will be important moving forward that these projects and several more are able to develop. As a member of the Estevan Chamber of Commerce, this is your Chamber, your voice, your connec on to government. There are numerous ways to get involved with the Chamber and benefit from your membership, including marke ng opportuni es, a ending luncheons and other events, and taking advantage of the programs and benefits that are included with membership. The spring is a short transi onal season. The summer is usually warm. Estevan has become known as the Energy Capital of Saskatchewan; this dis nc on is based on an extraordinary resource base that is serviced primarily out of Estevan. Two nearby coal mines provide fuel for the two local power sta ons responsible for genera ng nearly half of Saskatchewan’s base load power. While the two mines and two power sta ons provide stable employment for nearly 800 residents, the oilfield is a significant contributor of economic wealth and prosperity. Home to more than 200 businesses directly related to the oilfield, Estevan is the primary service centre for the hugely popular Bakken oilfield. There are in excess of 7,000 oil wells within a 160 km. radius, most of which are owned and serviced by companies based out of Estevan.
Southeast Saskatchewan is home to a broad and rich resource base, which includes oil & gas, lignite coal, potash and some of the most fer le agricultural lands in the province. As the regional resource sector’s primary service centre, Estevan features one of the country’s strongest and wealthiest economic bases. As a result, the community has become the regional service centre for a popula on of nearly 50,000, providing phenomenal retail, recrea onal, educa onal and health care facili es and opportuni es. Estevan is the eighth largest city in Saskatchewan. It is located near the southeastern corner of the province. The Souris River runs by the city. The city is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Estevan No. 5. Estevan has a humid con nental climate characterized by cold, long and dry winters and warm, short and rela vely humid summers. January is the coldest month. The precipita on in winter is chiefly snow.
