From Montréal (4½ hrs)

Montréal has a Latin, theatrical vibe, with offbeat festivals, great food, and hip bistros. In other words, it’s a must! Spend a day or two getting to know the city, then head east (Autoroute 20 or 40) to Québec City.

des Grands-Jardins toward La Baie. Or you can stay on the 138 until Baie-Sainte-Catherine. Then you can either hug the southern side of the fjord (Route 170) or take the ferry across to Tadoussac and follow the north shore up to Saguenay along Route 172.

From Chibougamau, take Route Québec’s capital is a UNESCO 167 toward Saint-Félicien.

World Heritage Site and likes to celebrate life à la française. The only fortified city north of Mexico has wonderful views of the St. Lawrence almost everywhere you go. Head up Route 175 through “the park” (as locals call it) to Chicoutimi.

From Mauricie (3 hrs)

The Mauricie region is on the north shore (Autoroute 40) between Montréal and Québec City, extending its greenery to the shores of the St. Lawrence. Take Route 155 in Trois-Rivières and drive toward La Tuque to make your way up to Lac Saint-Jean.

From Charlevoix (1½ hrs)

Just imagine all the kitesurfing sails criss-crossing the air above Baie des Ha! Ha! and Lac Saint-Jean for a choreography of colour that riffs on the blues of summer.

Isn’t it fabulous to stop and consider the sheer size of the fjord on a trek across one of its peaks, or the green vastness of the Monts Valin from one headland to the next—and to picture yourself back for a long snowshoeing adventure in winter, tiptoeing past ghostly snow sculptures or across a deserted ice field?

Smooth as Glass, Big as a Giant There’s no getting around it: this lake is HUGE. In fact, it’s so big that sometimes the opposite shore can’t be seen by the naked eye. Driving around it means treating yourself to a slideshow of ocean-blue panoramas, while the back country has a flowery palette of its own to enjoy.

Spread out the family picnic blanket under an age-old elm tree, then plunge headfirst into the lake or tackle the white waters of the rivers that flow into it.

Staying at a B&B is a little like bumping into an old friend: you end up talking about everything under the sun! For the owners, a good address is like a good recipe—it’s always worth sharing! So grab a pen and paper and listen up.

Bed & breakfast owners provide a place to stay, a nice meal, and plenty of good humour. They always have a story to tell and they’re sure to know their neck of the woods inside out. The First Nations have been in the Saguenay– Lac-Saint-Jean area for over 5,000 years. The Pekuakamiulnuatsh left an indelible mark on their environment—the Nistassinan—by naming it (Ouiatchouan, Métabetchouan, Mistassibi, Ashuapmushuan, Chicoutimi, Saguenay), occupying it, and establishing a culture that’s still alive today.

Mashteuiatsh is an outwardlooking community, proud to share an ancient culture, along with its spiritual life, traditions, and modes of expression both ancestral and contemporary. There are two main ways for visitors to reach out and appreciate these traditions in a whirlwind of dance, tastings, colour, sporting competitions, singing, and entertainment.

To find out what the term First Nations really means, nothing beats a face-to-face meeting, with real human contact. Discovering Mashteuiatsh begins at the Uashassihtsh site and at Carrefour d’accueil Ilnu, where we quickly find ourselves in new surroundings, discovering a way of life founded on preserving traditions and passing on knowledge.

You’ll learn more about the relationship with nature and ties that bind the Ilnu to the spiritual world on a hunting and fishing trip to Pourvoirie du réservoir Pipmuacan, or experience something out of the ordinary with a stay at Auberge Maison Robertson, once home to a fur-trading post at the centre of the community.

Ma r ianne St Gela is lake

She’s been here, there, and everywhere, but Lac-Saint-Jean remains Marianne St-Gelais’ first love. Originally from Saint-Félicien, the speed-skating Olympic medallist comes back home every year to childhood memories and a close-knit family.

As soon as she can, Marianne St-Gelais swaps downtown Montréal for the family cabin at Saint-Ludger-de-Milot. “It’s a little in the middle of nowhere, and that’s just great!” admits the speed skater, happy to be back home with her parents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and nephews.

“It’s where I come to unwind.”

No TV or cell phones here. “There’s no signal,” Marianne laughs. “We still boil the water over the fire to do the dishes.”

But there’s plenty to do: from swimming in the lake and trail riding on your quad to long evenings spent around the fire.

“Nothing happens, but we’re all right there in the present moment.”

A Family Affair

Half of her boyfriend’s family (she lives with speed skater Charles Hamelin) comes from Péribonka, also on the shores of Lac Saint-Jean.

What do Vergers de Velours in Alma do with 2,000 fruit trees? High-end processing, that’s what. The search is over—this is where you can fill your basket to the brim, with mistelle chocolates, maple truffles (in orange, coconut, and other flavours), berry alcohols, vinegars, birch syrup, jellies, and spreads. If you have a sweet tooth, a stop at Chocolaterie des Pères Trappistes, the chocolate factory run by the Trappist monks at the Dolbeau-Mistassini monastery, is a must.

Try a wine or two from Père & Fils (red or white) or opt for the berry aperitif (blueberry or raspberry). In Saint-Félicien, meanwhile, Microbrasserie La Chouape beckons on Boulevard du Sacré-Cœur.

Try a craft beer or two made by Louis Hébert, master cereal producer.

You’ll love what they’ve done with the labels, each created by artists who hail from the region. The microbrewery is open until midnight during the summer, seven days a week. In Saint-Gédéon, the beers from the Gagnon brothers at Microbrasserie du Lac Saint-Jean are devilishly refreshing. Enjoy them straight from the bottle or on tap, outside on the patio or in front of a live band. And in Alma, drop by the Miel des Ruisseaux stand for a taste of mead, the nectar of the gods trusted by the Vikings to give them strength and courage. The honey shop is part of Québec’s network of economuseums.

At Fromagerie Médard, three of the four Boivin-Côté children from Saint-Gédéon (Rose-Alice, Étienne, and Justine) are looking ahead to the family’s future.

You’ll meet them at the family-run cheese factory, in the greenhouses, and at the bakery. Halfway between Zoo sauvage de Saint-Félicien and Val-Jalbert on the Véloroute des Bleuets bike trail, take a cheese-tasting break at Fromagerie Perron and shoot the breeze with Albert (grandson to Adélard, the man who started the whole cheese-making business) while you stock up on some good old fresh cheddar.

At the sound of the bell, Médard family cheddar couldn’t be any fresher—it’s still warm.

At Fromagerie au Pays-des-Bleuets in Saint-Félicien, they keep their shoulder close to the cheese wheel. They make cheeses (Desneiges, Bouton d’Or, Roc Bleu, and Petit Délice), they have a butcher’s shop (Chez Ti-John), they run a dairy farm (3J), and they find the time to process berries (Les Petits fruits de Lizon), too. And all with a smile! On the way to Jonquière, drop by Fromagerie Blackburn where Marie-Josée runs the family cheese factory. She’s the woman behind the six signature cheeses, including the famous— and multiple award-winning—Mont-Jacob.

She grew up in the historic neighbourhood of Sainte-Thérèse d’Arvida before completing her studies in art and media technology at Cégep, right before university, in Jonquière. In other words, her roots are here. “I get all emotional every time I drive through the park and see the Monts Valin in the distance,” she says.

Freedom comes with every journey back home to her roots. And why L’Anse-Saint-Jean?

“My partner and I came back up to see the house where his parents and grandparents lived. It was right beside the marina, with the Saguenay river straight ahead. We knocked on the door, and destiny took care of the rest.” No wonder her eyes well up every time she leaves.

In fact, the merry-go-round of festivals continues all summer long. Les Rythmes du Monde is a six-day music festival with non-stop tunes from July 28 to August 2.
