Armistice 11.11.2011 93 years after the End of the First World War

11 NOVEMBER LECTURE - LAKHDAR BRAHIMI 10 November 2011 | CC Het Perron | 8.45 p.m. Ever since the celebration in 2008 of the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War, the Flemish Peace Institute, the Peace Fund of the City of Ypres, and the In Flanders Fields Museum have combined resources to extend an invitation to a high-profile personality to address the thematic of the Great War in Flanders from his or her perspective of personal engagement and knowledge. In past years we heard Tadatoshi Akiba, Robert Fisk, and Erwin Mortier discuss their views on commemoration, war and peace on the eve of Armistice Day. This year, Lakhdar Brahimi has accepted our invitation to discourse in Ypres on the end of the Great War. The Algerian Brahimi, one of the most noted UN diplomats, is particularly reputed for his missions as special UN envoy to Iraq and Afghanistan. He is also the author of the controversial ‘Brahimi Report’, an assessment of UN Peace Operations. Lakhdar Brahimi is together with Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter, and Bishop Desmond Tutu, amongst others, a member of the Elders. Being able to welcome a speaker from the Arab world, we may look forward to a ‘11 November Lecture’ from a very current and particularly apt perspective.
